Researchers designed an experiment to test the hypothesis that eating Olestra potato chips causes intestinal cramps. They had over 1,100 people eat either regular or Olestra potato chips while watching a movie and recorded whether they experienced cramps later. The results showed about equal percentages of people experienced cramps whether they ate regular or Olestra chips, not supporting the hypothesis. A similar experiment with peacock butterflies tested the hypotheses that their wing spots and sounds deter predatory birds. They painted spots black on some butterflies and removed the sound mechanism from others, then observed interactions with hungry birds. The results supported both hypotheses that wing spots and sounds deter predatory birds.
