Comparative literature involves the study of texts across cultures in an interdisciplinary way by examining connections across time and space. It demands high linguistic proficiency and a broadening of perspectives beyond local sentiments. Comparative literature developed from comparing one literature to others and comparing literature to other human expressions. The term originated in 1816 but systematic comparative studies began in the late 1800s in France, Germany, and the US, looking at patterns in world literature across cultures.
