Institutional repositories and open access movements both aim to reduce barriers to accessing scholarly information by eliminating costs through use of the internet. Institutional repositories primarily contain gray literature like working papers while open access focuses on peer-reviewed journals. Institutional repositories give new life to materials with limited audiences and allow non-static materials to be shared. They are being embraced by university presses as a lower-cost alternative to print journals and can include postprints with the right policies.
