PM MODI BOOSTS
INDIA’S PROSPECTS
For Prime Minister Narendra
Modi, the leadership of the
G20 has been a year-long
opportunity to showcase India
as an influential diplomatic and
economic power, and drive
investment and trade flows
into the world’s most populous
country. And it is needless
to say, at the end of the
summit Delhi stood TALL.
he extreme seri-
ousness with
which India took
up the mantle of
G20 presidency
on December 1, 2022 and the
success New Delhi achieved
following the culmination of
the G20 summit recently, it will
be an uphill task for Brazil to
live up to the next level and
achieve more. Incidentally,
Brazil will host the G20 or
rather G21 in 2024.
Even as the G20 Summit
ended with great fervour in the
national capital under India’s
presidency on Sunday, the Unit-
ed States also called it an ‘abso-
lute success.’In a press briefing
on Monday, the US State De-
partment official spokesperson
Matthew Miller told reporters,
“We absolutely believe it was a
success. The G20 is a big or-
ganisation. Russia is a member
of the G20. China is a member
of the G20.
Apart from the Delhi Decla-
ration and handling the state-
ment on the Ukraine war and
keeping the sentiments of coun-
tries in mind, the inclusion of
theAfrican Union following the
Prime Minister Narendra
Modi’s relentless insistence has
given the summit a
new dimension. It
was notable to
see how India
used the G20
presidency in
good earnest
to position it-
selftobecome
a major voice
to flag global
concerns and
also convince the major powers
to rope in other developing na-
tionstoincreasethesignificance
of the bloc.
WHAT INCLUSION OF
AU MEANS FOR INDIA?
The inclusion ofAU in the G20
will now help the African Un-
ion to get an opportunity to use
its (G20) permanent seat to cre-
ate a path to help in redesigning
global trade, finance, and in-
vestment architecture. The AU
is an intergovernmental organ-
isation of the 55 member states
located on the continent of Af-
rica. Launched on July 9, 2002,
the grouping is the successor of
the Organisation of African
Unity (OAU), which was
formed in 1963. The AU seeks
to build “an Integrated, Pros-
perous and Peaceful Africa,
driven by its own citizens”, its
website says.
In a major diplomatic win for
India, the African Union be-
came a new permanent member
of the G20, on the first day of
the summit. This is the first ex-
pansion of the bloc since its in-
ception in 1999, giving the con-
tinent a broader representation.
All member countries (of the
G20) accepted Prime Minister
Narendra Modi’s proposal to
bring the key bloc of the Glob-
al South to the high table. Sev-
eral nations including China,
US, Russia and the European
Union had expressed their sup-
port after India moved a formal
resolutiontomakethe55-mem-
ber African Union the 21st
member of the G-20. Even as
17 summits were held since its
first meeting in 2008, not once
was the membership of the Af-
rican Union raised especially
by any host countries.
INDIA’S ROLE
In the last few years, India has
been positioning itself and has
been successfully flagging con-
cerns, challenges and aspira-
tions of the Global South or the
developing nations, especially
the African continent.
Prime Minister Narendra
Modihasbeenpitchingforinclu-
sion of the African Union in the
G20, writing to the leaders of 20
nations way back in June, seek-
ingtheir(AU’s)fullmembership
attheNewDelhisummit.InJuly,
a formal proposal was included
in the draft communique for the
summit during the third G20
Sherpas meeting that took place
in Hampi, karnataka.
“Honoured to welcome the
African Union as a permanent
member of the G20 Family.
This will strengthen the G20
and also strengthen the voice of
the Global South,” Modi post-
ed on X along with a video of
him announcing that the Afri-
can Union has become a per-
manent member of the G20.
For India, strong bonds with
theAU might be a matter in the
United Nations, with the bloc
wielding its voting power in the
UN General Assembly.
For African nations, India
will now be seen and consid-
ered more so as a trustworthy
companion nation as compared
to the West in general and Chi-
na. In this context we may
mention that in the corporate
terms, India has completed 197
projects while 65 are under ex-
ecution and 81 are in the pre-
execution stage in Africa.
By gaining the AU’s faith,
New Delhi can expect to seek
more contracts and business
opportunities there. It may be
recalled that India has already
extended over $12.37 billion in
concessional loans to Africa.
Moreover, Africa’s huge
market will serve as a huge op-
portunity for Indian businesses.
In 2022-23, trade stood at $98
billion rising from $89 billion
the previous year. It is expected
to cross $100 billion soon.

BRAZIL’s
AGENDA
LULA
SPEAKS
l Brazilian President Luiz
Inacio Lula da Silva on Sunday
said that he has set forth three
key priorities under his coun-
try’s presidency of the group-
ing - social inclusion and the
fight against hunger, energy
transition, and sustainable
development and reform of
global governance institutions.
l “All these priorities are part
of the Brazilian presidency
motto which says ‘Building a
fair world and a sustainable
planet’. Two task forces will
be created - Global Alliance
against Hunger and Poverty
and the Global Mobilisation
against Climate Change,” the
President said as Prime Min-
ister Narendra Modi handed
him the ceremonial gavel of
the G20 Presidency
l President Lula said, “We
want greater participation of
the emerging economies in the
decision-making process of the
World Bank and International
Monetary Fund, the unbearable
foreign debts of the poor coun-
tries need to be addressed.”
l “We will put inequality at the
top: inequality of gender, race,
education, health, poverty and
hunger. The world needs bal-
ance.” “I’m one of the founding
members of G20.”
l “I would like to congratulate
India for organising the Sum-
mit exceptionally well. We
have received great warmth
from the Indian people. Brazil
has the conditions to be the
host country of G20 next year.
We want to use many cities
in Brazil to organise a great
number of events there”
l Addressing a press confer-
ence, the Brazil President
said he was not aware of
the reason why Russian
President Vladamir Putin and
Chinese President Xi Jinping
did not attend the Summit.
l “But I will invite them and
I hope that they will come to
Brazil and participate in the
Summit. I hope that when we
open the Summit in Brazil, I
hope there is no more war and
we are back to normal times...”
l “It’s a lot of responsibility for
Brazil to host the G20 summit
next year. Everybody knows
that we’ll chair the G20 and
we will put the inequality issue
as the core issue for the next
G20 process for discussion”
l “There’s a lot of inequality
in the world. We have few
with a lot and many with very
few resources. And so we
have to build an understand-
ing that the world needs more
balance in terms of the wealth
distribution that is being pro-
duced, so that we do not have
to sleep every day knowing
that there’s 730 million people
that are in hunger. And so
this is extremely important.
There’s a lot of sensitivity.”
HOBNOBBING WITH
WORLD LEADERS...
rime Minister Modi’s bilateral
engagements with leaders
such as Joe Biden, Rishi Sunak,
Olaf Scholz, and Fumio Kishida on
the sidelines of the G20 Summit
was significant. PM Modi also
made an epochal announcement,
heralding the initiation of the Global
Biofuels Alliance. This major initia-
tive received support of 19 nations
and 12 international organizations.
Also, key nations including Argenti-
na, Canada, Italy, and South Africa
have lent their unwavering support
to this visionary cause. Notably, the
alliance’s inclusive spirit extends
beyond G20, extending invitations
to nations like Bangladesh, Singa-
pore, Mauritius, and the UAE.
P
ON CLEAN ENERGY...
l Lula da Silva said that another
issue that Brazil will discuss under
its G20 Presidency will be energy
transition.
l He stressed that Brazil has extraor-
dinary potential in the production of
clean energy and added that 90 per
cent of his country’s electrical power
is fully clean. He said that Brazil has
a lot to teach to other countries on
biofuels and clean energy.
l The Brazilian President said,
“Another issue that is going to be
put on the order of the day is the
energy transition that we’ll discuss
next year in the G20 process. Bra-
zil has an extraordinary potential in
the production of clean energy. To-
day we have our electrical power,
almost 90 per cent is fully clean.”

And it is needless to say, at the end of the summit Delhi stood TALL. he extreme seri- ousness with which India took up the mantle of G20 presidency on December 1, 2022 and the success New Delhi achieved following the culmination of the G20 summit recently, it will be an uphill task for Brazil to live up to the next level and achieve more. Incidentally, Brazil will host the G20 or rather G21 in 2024. Even as the G20 Summit ended with great fervour in the national capital under India’s presidency on Sunday, the Unit- ed States also called it an ‘abso- lute success.’In a press briefing on Monday, the US State De- partment official spokesperson Matthew Miller told reporters, “We absolutely believe it was a success. The G20 is a big or- ganisation. Russia is a member of the G20. China is a member of the G20. Apart from the Delhi Decla- ration and handling the state- ment on the Ukraine war and keeping the sentiments of coun- tries in mind, the inclusion of theAfrican Union following the Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s relentless insistence has given the summit a new dimension. It was notable to see how India used the G20 presidency in good earnest to position it- selftobecome a major voice to flag global concerns and also convince the major powers to rope in other developing na- tionstoincreasethesignificance of the bloc. WHAT INCLUSION OF AU MEANS FOR INDIA? The inclusion ofAU in the G20 will now help the African Un- ion to get an opportunity to use its (G20) permanent seat to cre- ate a path to help in redesigning global trade, finance, and in- vestment architecture. The AU is an intergovernmental organ- isation of the 55 member states located on the continent of Af- rica. Launched on July 9, 2002, the grouping is the successor of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was formed in 1963. The AU seeks to build “an Integrated, Pros- perous and Peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens”, its website says. In a major diplomatic win for India, the African Union be- came a new permanent member of the G20, on the first day of the summit. This is the first ex- pansion of the bloc since its in- ception in 1999, giving the con- tinent a broader representation. All member countries (of the G20) accepted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s proposal to bring the key bloc of the Glob- al South to the high table. Sev- eral nations including China, US, Russia and the European Union had expressed their sup- port after India moved a formal resolutiontomakethe55-mem- ber African Union the 21st member of the G-20. Even as 17 summits were held since its first meeting in 2008, not once was the membership of the Af- rican Union raised especially by any host countries. INDIA’S ROLE In the last few years, India has been positioning itself and has been successfully flagging con- cerns, challenges and aspira- tions of the Global South or the developing nations, especially the African continent. Prime Minister Narendra Modihasbeenpitchingforinclu- sion of the African Union in the G20, writing to the leaders of 20 nations way back in June, seek- ingtheir(AU’s)fullmembership attheNewDelhisummit.InJuly, a formal proposal was included in the draft communique for the summit during the third G20 Sherpas meeting that took place in Hampi, karnataka. “Honoured to welcome the African Union as a permanent member of the G20 Family. This will strengthen the G20 and also strengthen the voice of the Global South,” Modi post- ed on X along with a video of him announcing that the Afri- can Union has become a per- manent member of the G20. For India, strong bonds with theAU might be a matter in the United Nations, with the bloc wielding its voting power in the UN General Assembly. For African nations, India will now be seen and consid- ered more so as a trustworthy companion nation as compared to the West in general and Chi- na. In this context we may mention that in the corporate terms, India has completed 197 projects while 65 are under ex- ecution and 81 are in the pre- execution stage in Africa. By gaining the AU’s faith, New Delhi can expect to seek more contracts and business opportunities there. It may be recalled that India has already extended over $12.37 billion in concessional loans to Africa. Moreover, Africa’s huge market will serve as a huge op- portunity for Indian businesses. In 2022-23, trade stood at $98 billion rising from $89 billion the previous year. It is expected to cross $100 billion soon. The world needs bal- ance.” “I’m one of the founding members of G20.” l “I would like to congratulate India for organising the Sum- mit exceptionally well. Everybody knows that we’ll chair the G20 and we will put the inequality issue as the core issue for the next G20 process for discussion” l “There’s a lot of inequality in the world. We have few with a lot and many with very few resources.
