Eugene von Guérard was an Austrian-Australian landscape painter born in 1811. He studied painting in Rome under Giovanni Battista Bassi, who taught the tradition of 17th century landscape masters. Von Guérard arrived in Australia in 1852 during the Gold Rush. He is known for his detailed oil paintings of the Australian landscape, which were informed by his interests in geology, geography, and vegetation. He would paint landscapes from memory using small brushstrokes and magnifying glasses for detail. His works provide a sense of place and beauty in God's creation through symbolic elements and representations of Aboriginal figures.
