With the exponential rise in quantity of data to manage, the modern data centre is increasingly limited by the capacity of individual machines. Since storage and compute demand more capacity than can be provided by a single machine, we distribute both over large clusters and use the network to transfer data between where it is stored and where it is processed. Moving all that data around uses deep storage stacks which incur a significant performance impact. If we could somehow flatten the storage stack and provide applications with direct access to data, then we could improve performance by orders of magnitude.
Hewlett Packard Enterprise recently demonstrated that we can do exactly with their research project, ""The Machine"". Instead of moving data around with a network, The Machine uses multi terabytes of persistent memory and a next generation fabric-attached memory interconnect to provide a single pool of storage which can be accessed by any processor in the cluster. It shows that we can provide applications with immediate load/store access to huge data sets in a model called Memory-Driven Computing.
Proof in hand, now it is time to bring Memory-Defined Computing to the data centre. Gen-Z is an open systems interconnect designed to provide memory semantic access to data and devices via direct attached, switched or fabric topologies. HPE has joined the Gen-Z consortium and is using the knowledge gained with The Machine to help shape Gen-Z to set the stage for true Memory-Driven Computing. With putting memory at the centre, this enables us to overcome the limitations of today's computing systems and power innovations.
This session will cover two topics. It will start with a status update on The Machine and an overview of how it works. Then we'll shift into an introduction of Gen-Z, and how it can reshape the architecture of computing in the years to come.

Istio brings a myriad of options to provide routing rules, encryption, and monitoring for microservices, typically in container environments. Cilium provides accelerated network security using a modern kernel technology called BPF. Put the two together and what do you get? A distributed security solution enabling microservices traffic management, security, and monitoring while enforcing policy as close to the microservices as possible.
Cynthia Thomas and Romain Lenglet discuss the architectural and performance benefits of using Cilium with Istio and provide a demo of this BPF-based, Linux kernel technology. Cilium provides an API-aware security solution that can make a decision on every single microservice flow, with the ability to enforce protocols such as HTTP, Kafka, and gRPC. By addressing security policy at the API layer, you can enforce policy efficiently with kernel capabilities while reducing the attack surface in a microservices deployment.

The Internet peering ecosystem is going through a historic and rapid paradigm shift.
The largest ISPs and content providers have always interconnected their networks at the core of the Internet using a technique called "Internet peering," the free and reciprocal exchange of access to each other's customers. In this way, networks of scale can exchange a large enough amount of traffic for free with one another to offset the cost of deployment (equipment, colocation, and transport to the colocation center). This justification is the basis for the business case for peering.
However, a recent trend -- called "remote peering" -- has emerged as a way to get these peering benefits but without the cost of additional equipment, transport, or colocation. The remote peering model is where a remote peering provider delivers transport to the customer router with Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) extension(s) from the largest exchange points in the world. In this way, the customer gets all of the benefits of peering (performance, control over routing, direct relationships with the peer networks, etc.) without the large initial capital and operational costs.
This is not just a fringe or small change to peering - it is a fundamental shift in the Internet architecture. Remote peering is a new technique that helps make peering accessible to a much larger population. As a result of the cost shift, an increasing percentage of networks are peering across great distances. The peering paradigm of "peering keeps local traffic local" is no more.
During the free webinar you will hear case studies from the field where medium-sized content companies are able to enter the peering ecosystem and connect to multiple Internet Exchange Points over a single circuit. These companies have graciously allowed their cost numbers to be shared so the traditional peering model can be compared against the emerging remote peering model. Also, the webinar will highlight the strongest arguments on both sides of the debate over whether remote peering is good or bad for the global Internet peering ecosystem.

Traditional carriers' transport networks consist of vertically-integrated devices with vendor-proprietary interfaces, that causes "vendor lock in" environment and interferes with adopting software based control and configuration for carriers' transport networks. NTT Communications are trying to adopt disaggregation approach for them to transform our operations by integrating commoditized multi-vendor components and SDN technology.
In this presentation, we will talk about our expectations for disaggregated transport networks and its controller architecture with multiple SDN controllers including open source software. Furthermore, we will show our internal evaluation result of disaggregated transport network feasibility and discuss future development plans.
As SDN & NFV services become commercially available, the industry needs to approach once again the reach issue. There is not a single service provider with complete reach; that is why we build NNIs and need a wider SDN/NFV Ecosystem.

Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

1. Why QLogic 10Gb Ethernet
Matters to Lenovo Customers
When intelligence agencies monitor chatter, they don’t examine the content
details of communications intercepts as much as the volume. They pay attention
to fluctuations and spikes in the number of messages sent and received over
certain networks on certain themes.
Now, I’m not pretending to be as accurate as a data miner or analytics program,
but I’ve noticed that the volume spikes in the amount of chatter on 10Gb
Ethernet (10GbE) has been steadily growing over the last year. It comes from real
conversations I’ve had with Lenovo sellers and end users at a multitude of
meeting places, such as Lenovo sales kick-off event and Lenovo Enterprise
Briefing Center (EBC), as well as industry events such as VMworld® and Red Hat
Summit.
The time for 10GbE is now! It may have had a slow start, but it is more relevant
today than at any point in its seven-year history. Take a look at this chart from
2. Crehan Research[1] below. The steepest point in the 10GbE adoption exploded
within the last year and will continue for a handful of more years to come.
And although the rumbling of 25GbE (and higher) is just beginning, those
ecosystems will take a while to catch up to the mature position currently claimed
by 10GbE technology and its providers.
Within this proven ecosystem is QLogic, with its 10GbE adapters and CNAs that

Top Three Reasons Why QLogic 10GbE Matters to Lenovo Customers
1. Performance is maximized with NIC Partitioning (NPAR): NPAR helps make
the migration to today’s powerful 10GbE networks an easy and compelling
option. With optimized I/O and server resource utilization, performance
and efficiency is maximized while TCO is reduced. NPAR allows a single
10GbE port to be partitioned into multiple physical functions, each with its
own configurations including bandwidth settings. This is particularly helpful
in virtualization where you typically want to isolate different hypervisor
functions onto a separate 1Gb port.
With QLogic’s NPAR capabilities, the number of adapters required is reduced
because you can leverage a single port for multiple functions. When you allocate
bandwidth, you can ensure QoS so that a particular application is guaranteed a
defined bandwidth. From a TCO and management perspective, there is a huge
savings to the IT department, a huge performance improvement and QoS
guarantee available to the customer.[2]
2. Applications are accelerated with tunneling offload: Tunneling offloads are
a powerful solution to the problem of vLAN-sprawl. As IT runs out of vLANs,
the only other choice is to move to tunneling based on VXLAN, NVGRE or
GENEVE in order to segregate individual workloads. QLogic adapters have
the ability to do standard offloads even when transporting these overlays,
and expand vLANs from 4096 to 16 million[3]. Tunneling offload can
increase data throughput up to 18 percent[4] and increase CPU efficiency
up to 55 percent[5], impacting TCO by improving application performance
and reducing the number of servers required to support the same
workloads.

3. CPU efficiency gets a boost with storage offloads and converged Ethernet:
The 10X increase in bandwidth provided by 10GbE networks can also be
used to support protocols for SANs. QLogic converged Ethernet adapters
for Lenovo optimize server utilization with full hardware offload for iSCSI
and FCoE protocols. By comparison, most other 10GbE adapters require
iSCSI and FCoE software initiators that squander critical CPU resources for
storage I/O. By offloading the storage burden to the adapter’s hardware,
the host’s processor isn’t as heavily taxed. By consuming less processor
resources, you have room for more VMs and can accelerate applications.
