This is a presentation I gave at the Reeperbahn Campus conference in Hamburg on 24th September 2009, looking at current trends in music games. It's very much an overview - the intention was to provide sparkpoints for a panel session following my bit.

GoMix (UK) GoMix is an interactive music format that lets users create personalized remixes of major artist's songs. Distributed via Social Networks and digital album bundles, GoMix brings labels new revenue and promotional opportunities through advertising and digital retail products. In 2009 GoMix has been adopted by a succession of major artists and advertisers. 2010 will see very significant evolution, adding virtual goods, a mobile platform and a game changing User Generated Content approach.

A mock course presentation to illustrate the difficulties and necessities of circumventing technology prevention measures and issues related specifically to music copyright. Perspective of challenges by publishers, and, promoting instruction by faculty, students, administrators and librarians. More specifically, a sample presentation of a course in music appreciation for Heavy Metal Music and the tools and techniques required to circumvent technologies for a program intended to be Fair Use. Music access is available from an ever expanding collection of technology breakthrough competing heavily with industrial barriers and fire walls. Music can be acquired via performance, radio, computer, mobile device with an audio via a media player such as Windows Media Player, a MP3, WMV, or other audio file or via a player such as an iPod, or listening to streaming music over the Internet, Internet radio stations or web pages. Music has expanded with technologies to include music videos, mastertones, ringback tones and audio tracks on mobile devices. Heavy Metal is a perfect example for presenting the turn-around values of performers, advertisers, government officials, radio, Internet, and addresses a host of other future challenges regarding copyright. Recent cases and their significance to music and the performing arts.

Case studY Before the 2005 release of Guitar Hero, you had probably never heard of Harmonix. The videogame design studio quickly found itself in the spotlight when Guitar Hero became the fastest videogame in history to top $1 billion in North American sales. The game concept focuses around a plastic guitar-shaped controller. Players press colored but- tons along the guitar neck to match a series of dots that scroll down the TV in time with music from a famous rock tune, such as the Ramones’ “I Wanna Be Sedated” and Deep Purple’s “Smoke on the Water.” Players score points based on their accuracy. In November 2007, Harmonix released Rock Band, adding drums, vocals, and bass guitar options to the game. Rock Band was originally released with a $169 price tag (most videogames retail at $50–60) and sold over five million units in its first year. In 2006 Harmonix’s founders sold the company to Viacom for $175 million, which allowed them a larger budget for product development and music licensing for the games. The sale did allow Harmonix to maintain their operational autonomy. One of the keys to the success of Harmonix and Rock Band was its appeal beyond the core gamer demographic, reaching to first-time gamers and families. The company was originally founded by Alex Rigopulos and Eran Egozy in 1995 and focused around a company vision of providing a way for people without much musical training or talent to experience the joy of playing and creating music. The founders believed that if people had the opportunity to create their own music, they would jump at the chance. Their first several attempts to market their concept, however, fell flat— while the software always proved techni- cally impressive, people generally expressed little interest in trying it out or didn’t seem like they were having much fun when they did. In 2000, Rigopulos and Egozy hit on a concept that engaged consumers, and Harmonix became a videogame company. The move from software to videogames gave Harmonix’s ideas a sense of purpose and a way to use the competition found in videogames to help engage, direct, and motivate players. At the time, however, the market for music-based games had not fully developed, and Harmonix produced several rhythm-based games that proved too complex and expensive to gain a broader audience. Harmonix finally found some measure of success in its 2004 release of Karaoke Revolution, in which players scored points singing along to pop songs. This allowed the player to be a part of the music. In 2005, Harmonix part- nered with RedOctane, a company that made peripheral videogame controllers and had a similar philosophy for attracting gamers, and together they created Guitar Hero. Guitar Hero put players in the role of the lead guitarist in a rock band that was climbing its way to stardom. Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management. The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes.
