The littoral zone is the area close to shore that is covered by saltwater at high tide and exposed at low tide. It contains a variety of animal life like anemones, clams, crabs and fish as well as aquatic plants such as algae and mangroves. The littoral zone experiences fluctuating temperatures, moisture levels and salinity due to the daily tides.

An estuary is a semi-enclosed coastal body of water which has a free connection with the open sea and within which sea water mixes with fresh water. This module highlights the details of estuaries as one of the productive coastal ecosystems.

Economically, mangroves are worth $186 billion annually for services like coastal protection from storms, fisheries habitat, and carbon storage. Historically, mangroves were seen as wastelands but are now recognized as highly productive ecosystems. Mangroves are used to produce timber, fuelwood, honey, and traditional medicines. Semi intensive fish culture system

Sponges filter feed by drawing water in through pores and using flagellated cells called choanocytes to trap plankton, while amoebocytes digest and distribute the food. Reproduction can occur sexually via releasing eggs and sperm into the water or asexually by fragmentation or budding.

- 5. BIOTOPE Moisture: Is covered with salt water at high tides ,and it is exposed at low tides. Temperature: The temperature ranges from the moderate temperature of the water to air temperatures that vary from below freezing to scorching. Salinity:Depressions on the shores sometimes form tide pools,areas that remain wet although they are not long-lasting features.
