1) Saul disobeyed God's command to destroy the Amalekites and their livestock, instead sparing King Agag and the best animals.
2) When confronted by Samuel, Saul admitted wrongdoing but made excuses, blaming the people for his actions.
3) Samuel rejected Saul's excuses and repentance, prophesying that God had chosen a new king to replace Saul, as true repentance requires admitting sin without justification.
An Unlikely Duet: Isaiah and Bob DylanRoss Reddick
This is a presentation I put together for a chapel service at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, GA. That week we were exploring Christian peace. On the last day, this presentation was where the sermon would normally go. It was a way to explore peace negatively. What does the *absence* of peace look like--well, sound like--in this case.
I paired selections of the Prophet Isaiah with the lyrics from Bob Dylan's famous song, "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall." Isaiah and Bob could say it much better than I ever could. I let them speak.
The last slide was generated by tagxedo.com. The text used to generate the tag cloud came from senior answers to an ordination exam question (Presbyterian Church, U.S.A.) that dealt with Christian peace.
We see the power of grace most acutely in the transformation of our human nature. Only grace can change who we really are. This week we'll look at the transformation of the man named Saul of Tarsus. He would become known as the apostle Paul. How did Saul initially experience God's grace? How was it seen in a Christian "nobody" named Ananias?

Slide 2: Introduction to Mindfulness
Mindfulness, defined as the conscious, non-judgmental observation of the present moment, has deep roots in Buddhist meditation practice but has gained significant popularity in the Western world in recent years. In today's society, filled with distractions and constant stimuli, mindfulness offers a valuable tool for regaining inner peace and reconnecting with our true selves. By cultivating mindfulness, we can develop a heightened awareness of our thoughts, feelings, and surroundings, leading to a greater sense of clarity and presence in our daily lives.

In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

3. Saul blamed the people when
Samuel called his hand.
"to sacrifice unto the Lord
thy God;"
3
4. 24 And Saul said unto Samuel, I have sinned: for I
have transgressed the Commandment of the
Lord, and thy words: because I feared the
people, and obeyed their voice.
Saul admitted his sin, but he didn't accept
responsibility for his actions;
He blamed it on the people.
"because I feared the people,
and obeyed their voice."
4
5. Have you ever made excuses for wrongdoing?
I'm sorry I spoke hatefully to you, but you
made me so mad I couldn't help it.
"It's not my fault; it's yours.
I'm sorry I stole that car,
"It's not my fault; it's
yours.
5
6. If we would be forgiven and cleansed from our
sins, we have to confess our sin as sin, and as
our own sin.
Admitting that we chose to commit the sin.
Then with an humble heart and contrite spirit --
ask God to forgive us in Jesus' Name.
The righteous cry, and the Lord heareth, and
delivereth them out of all their troubles. The Lord
is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and
saveth such as be of a contrite spirit. Psalms 34:17-18
6
7. When we sincerely cry out unto God in Jesus'
Name, He hears our cry and delivers us.
But you can't fool God.
7
8. Acts 15 NIV 8 God, who knows the heart, showed
that He accepted them by giving the Holy Spirit to
them, just as He did to us.
1 Samuel 16:7 (TLB) … Men judge by outward
appearance, but I (God) look at a man’s thoughts
and intentions."
8
9. 1 Sam 15:24 AndSaul said unto Samuel, I have sinned:
for I have transgressed the Commandment of the
Lord, and thy words: because I feared the
people, and obeyed their voice. 25 Now therefore, I
pray thee, pardon my sin, and turn again with
me, that I may worship the Lord.
Saul is just sorry that he got caught;
He is not sorrowful for his sin.
9
10. 26 And Samuel said unto Saul, I will not return with
thee: for thou hast rejected the Word of the
Lord, and the Lord hath rejected thee from being
king over Israel.
Saul was more concerned with Samuel's
opinion, than with God Almighty.
True repentance doesn't come with excuses.
True repentance is humble and sincere.
10
11. 27-28 And as Samuel turned
about to go away, (Saul) laid
hold upon the skirt of his
mantle, and it rent. And
Samuel said unto (Saul), The
Lord hath rent the kingdom of
Israel from thee this day, and
hath given it to a neighbor of
thine, that is better than thou.
11
12. 29 And also the Strength of
Israel will not lie nor
repent: for He is not a
man, that He should repent.
Nothing that Saul said at this point would
change the mind of the Lord.
Saul is no longer king, even though he
holds the title for 15 more years BKC.
12
13. 30 Then (Saul) said, I have sinned: yet honor me
now, I pray thee, before the elders of my
people, and before Israel, and turn again with
me, that I may worship the Lord thy God. 31 So
Samuel turned again after Saul; and Saul
worshipped the Lord.
To confess one's sin after being
caught is seldom true repentance.
Saul seems to be interested only in the outward
appearance before the people.
13
14. 32 Then said Samuel, Bring ye
hither to me Agag the king of
the Amalekites. And Agag came
unto him delicately. And Agag
said, Surely the bitterness of
death is past.
1 Samuel 15:32 (TLB) Then Samuel said, "Bring
King Agag to me." Agag arrived all full of
smiles, for he thought, "Surely the worst is over
and I have been spared!"
14
15. 33 And Samuel said, As thy
sword hath made women
childless, so shall thy mother
be childless among women.
And Samuel hewed Agag in
pieces before the Lord in
Gilgal.
15
16. 34 Then Samuel went to Ramah; and Saul went up
to his house to Gibeah of Saul. 35 And Samuel came
no more to see Saul until the day of his death:
nevertheless Samuel mourned for Saul: and the
Lord repented that He had made Saul king over
Israel.
But God had already rejected
him as king of Israel.
We always weep for those who
turn their back on God and
suffer hard consequences.
16
17. Saul rejected the Word of the Lord, refusing to kill
King Agag and the best of the livestock.
Samuel rebuked Saul, but Saul
did not truly repent;
He made excuses, and passed
the buck.
17
18. We have seen in this study of Saul's life and reign
that he started well,
With an humble heart and submissive spirit.
Ecclesiastes 7 8 Better is the end of a thing than the
beginning thereof: and the patient in spirit is better
than the proud in spirit.
Don't get mad and quit.
Don't get discouraged
Don't get distracted.
