We see the power of grace most acutely in the transformation of our human nature. Only grace can change who we really are. This week we'll look at the transformation of the man named Saul of Tarsus. He would become known as the apostle Paul. How did Saul initially experience God's grace? How was it seen in a Christian "nobody" named Ananias?

In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

3. • a Deceitful Heart is Disobedient
– 1Sa 13:11-14 NLT but Samuel said, "What is this
you have done?" Saul replied, "I saw my men
scattering from me, and you didn't arrive when
you said you would, and the Philistines are at
Micmash ready for battle. 12 So I said, 'The
Philistines are ready to march against us at
Gilgal, and I haven't even asked for the LORD's
help!' So I felt compelled to offer the burnt
offering myself before you came."
4. • a Deceitful Heart is Disobedient
– 1Sa 13:11-14 NLT 13 "How foolish!" Samuel
exclaimed. "You have not kept the command the
LORD your God gave you. Had you kept it, the
LORD would have established your kingdom over
Israel forever. 14 But now your kingdom must
end, for the LORD has sought out a man after His
own heart. The LORD has already appointed him
to be the leader of His people, because you have
not kept the LORD's command."
5. • a Deceitful Heart is Arrogant
–1Sa 15:13-21 NLT When Samuel finally
found him, Saul greeted him cheerfully.
"May the LORD bless you," he said. "I have
carried out the LORD's command!" 14
"Then what is all the bleating of sheep and
goats and the lowing of cattle I hear?"
Samuel demanded. 15 "It's true that the
army spared the best of the sheep, goats,
and cattle," Saul admitted. "But they are
going to sacrifice them to the LORD your
God. We have destroyed everything else."
6. • a Deceitful Heart is Arrogant
–1Sa 15:13-21 NLT 16 Then Samuel said to
Saul, "Stop! Listen to what the LORD told
me last night!" "What did He tell you?"
Saul asked. 17 And Samuel told him,
"Although you may think little of yourself,
are you not the leader of the tribes of
Israel? The LORD has anointed you king of
Israel. 18 And the LORD sent you on a
mission and told you, 'Go and completely
destroy the sinners, the Amalekites, until
they are all dead.'
7. • a Deceitful Heart is Arrogant
–1Sa 15:13-21 NLT 19 Why haven't you obeyed
the LORD? Why did you rush for the plunder
and do what was evil in the LORD's sight?" 20
"But I did obey the LORD," Saul insisted. "I
carried out the mission He gave me. I brought
back King Agag, but I destroyed everyone
else. 21 Then my troops brought in the best of
the sheep, goats, cattle, and plunder to
sacrifice to the LORD your God in Gilgal."
8. • a Deceitful Heart is Rebellious
– 1Sa 15:22-23 NLT But Samuel replied, "What is
more pleasing to the LORD: your burnt offerings
and sacrifices or your obedience to His voice?
Listen! Obedience is better than sacrifice, and
submission is better than offering the fat of
rams. 23 Rebellion is as sinful as witchcraft, and
stubbornness as bad as worshiping idols. So
because you have rejected the command of the
LORD, He has rejected you as king."
9. • a Deceitful Heart is all about Appearance
– 1Sa 15:24-31 NLT Then Saul admitted to Samuel,
"Yes, I have sinned. I have disobeyed your
instructions and the LORD's command, for I was
afraid of the people and did what they demanded.
25 But now, please forgive my sin and come back
with me so that I may worship the LORD." 26 But
Samuel replied, "I will not go back with you! Since
you have rejected the LORD's command, He has
rejected you as king of Israel." 27 As Samuel turned
to go, Saul tried to hold him back and tore the hem
of his robe. 28 And Samuel said to him, "The LORD
has torn the kingdom of Israel from you today and
has given it to someone else--one who is better than
you.
10. • a Deceitful Heart is all about Appearance
– 29 And He who is the Glory of Israel will not lie,
nor will He change his mind, for He is not human
that He should change his mind!" 30 Then Saul
pleaded again, "I know I have sinned. But please,
at least honor me before the elders of my people
and before Israel by coming back with me so that
I may worship the LORD your God." 31 So
Samuel finally agreed and went back with him,
and Saul worshiped the LORD.
Editor's Notes
Samuel reminds Saul of the time he was humble, when he hid among the baggage and didn’t consider himself good enough to be King, How God raised him up and strengthened him. Who does Saul now think he is, suddenly he knows better than God. He now claims plunder for himself even if God forbade it. Saul is so arrogant he doesn’t even see his mistake, he insists he did obey the Lord and then he blames the men. He is so self absorbed that he doesn’t‘ even have the character to assume responibility.

Saul doesn’t care about losing the Kingdom he cares about people knowing that he lost it. A Deceitful heart is more concerned with the image than with the reality. You just want to look the part to fit in but are not prepared to really become what God desires. The whole lesson we learn from Saul’s life is that he was chosen because of appearance but never had the heart to be the King. He could not live up to the packaging. The whole problem with legalism is that it shapes the appearance but cannot change the heart. But God is about people that follow Him with all their hearts. People that worship Him in spirit and in truth. People whose heart is truthfully after Him and whose lives get changed to fit their hearts.
Saul was killed and lost the favour of God not by external issues, by His enemies but by His internal failures. He valued appearing like a Godly person more than he valued the presence of God. He was never concerned with getting the ark of God back from Kiriath-jearim were it has been for 20 years (1 Sam7:2)
