Green Buildings Ratings In India
Leadership in Energy & Environmental
Design (LEED)
https://www.usgbc.org/
In April 1993, Rick Fedrizzi, David Gottfried and
Mike Italiano convened representatives from 60
firms and several nonprofits in the American
Institute of Architects’ boardroom for the
founding meeting. It was then that ideas were
shared for an open and balanced coalition
spanning the entire building industry and for a
green building rating system, which would later
become LEED.
LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is the most
widely used green building rating system in the world. Available
for virtually all building types, LEED provides a framework for
healthy, highly efficient, and cost-saving green buildings. LEED
certification is a globally recognized symbol of sustainability
achievement and leadership.
International Rating Programs: LEED
LEED Green Building Certification
LEED stands for- Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. It is a
Third-party rating system.
Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) in 1998. It is a non-
profitable organization.
Function of USGBC:
 Develops the reference guides for each project type.
 Handles the development of the LEED rating system and offers LEED based
educational research program.
GBCI (Green Building Certification Inc.):
 oversee LEED certification process.
 credentialing exams.
 Administer the LEED professional accreditation programs independently.
Greenbuild is the world’s largest conference launched in 2002, dedicated to green
building.
A U.S. green building certification standard also used by numerous projects
outside the U.S.
The Green Building movement in India was
triggered off when CII-Sohrabji Godrej Green
Business Centre building in Hyderabad was
awarded with the first and the prestigious
Platinum rated green building rating in India.
With a modest beginning of 20,000 sq.ft. green
built-up area in the country in the year 2003,
today (as on 28 April 2022) more than 7,128
Green Buildings projects coming up with a
footprint of over 8 Billion sq.ft are registered with
the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC).

Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRI
https://www.grihaindia.org/
Going by the old adage ‘what gets measured,
gets managed’, GRIHA attempts to quantify
aspects such as energy consumption, waste
generation, renewable energy adoption, etc. so
as to manage, control and reduce the same to
the best possible extent.
GRIHA is a rating tool that helps people assesses
the performance of their building against certain
nationally acceptable benchmarks. It evaluates
the environmental performance of a building
holistically over its entire life cycle, thereby
providing a definitive standard for what
constitutes a ‘green building’
GEM Sustainability Certification Rating Program
http://green-assocham.com/
ASSOCHAM has taken a Green Initiative to care for
the Mother Earth and formed a Council for Green
and Eco-friendly Movement (CGEM) that will govern
the program “GEM Sustainability Certification
Program” with an objective to promote
environment friendly green building design and
construction.
It’s an affordable certification
program for everyone. The
fee of the program is very
economical
The program shall address
the fire & life safety norms in
its principles
Great recognition for India’s
buildings
It generally cost Rs 4-10
per sq.ft. more as
compared to Normal
Building.
The Payback Period is only
3-4 years.
The client and GEM
community regular
interaction is more even
post certification in this
program.

QUANTITATIVE APPROACH EDGE uses projected

within the software.
PROJECT INTEGRATION Certification compliance can
be achieved with invoices, photos and a few architectural
drawings.
LOCATION-SPECIFIC EDGE has climate and lifestyle
data for the most accurate results.

Green Habitat Accomplished Rating
The buildings will be rated by a committee of CPWD officers
drawn from Architecture, Civil, Electrical and Horticulture
cadres.
The constitution of the committees for different regions will
be decided separately. Same criteria will be adopted for all
types of buildings
i.e. residential, office or institutional buildings.
The building shall be rated based on the total marks scored:

Editor's Notes

  • #27 Choosing a certification system that’s right for your project depends on a lot of factors. EDGE isn’t meant to be competitive, it’s meant to help scale up green building. EDGE is one of many certification systems, each having its own advantages. If you value a numbers-based approach with speed, ease, and affordability, then EDGE could be right for you. Here are some of the ways that EDGE is different.
