Fundamental concepts of Green Building Design and
Sustainability.
Green building (also known as green construction or sustainable
building) expands and complements the building design concerns of
economy, utility, durability, and comfort.
A green building is one whose construction and lifetime of operation
assure the healthiest possible environment while representing the most
efficient and least disruptive use of land, water, optimizes energy
efficiency, conserves natural resources, generates less waste and
provides healthier space for occupants as compared to conventional
buildings.
Fundamental concepts of Green Building Design and
Sustainability.
• While many green materials and technologies do cost more, it has
been demonstrated that many green strategies and technologies
actually cost the same and some even cost less than traditional “not-
so-green” technologies.
• Building a green building is not just a matter of assembling a
collection of the latest green technologies or materials. Rather, it is a
process in which every element of the design is first optimized and
then the impact and interrelationship of various different elements and
systems within the building and site are re-evaluated, integrated, and
optimized as part of a whole building solution.
• Adopting green technology is not only an eco friendly concept
but also an efficient utilization of energy, resources and capital.
• Energy consumption is low as compared to traditional concept
and depends on Local climate, Density of occupancy,
Occupancy schedule, Orientation of the building, internal loads
etc.
• Moreover this technology also provides excellent opportunity
for implementing green building concepts through LEED
buildings.
• Also building consumption as % of overall consumption can be
reduced substantially.
Fundamental concepts of Green Building Design and
Sustainability.
Green Rating regime
• Setting Green Goals and Objectives
• Once the decision to build green has been made, one of
the first steps in the green design process is to establish
firm environmental goals for the project. This is often done
during what is called a goal setting or targeting session.
• It is important to set specific measurable goals for things
like energy efficiency, water conservation, on-site
treatment of rain water and storm water, material and
resource management, construction waste management,
and to assign responsibility for meeting these goals to
specific members of the design team. Each goal needs a
champion who will see that objective through to the end.
What are the components of green
building?
1) Life cycle assessment.
2) Siting and structure design efficiency.
3) Energy efficiency.
4) Water efficiency.
5) Materials efficiency.
6) Indoor environmental quality enhancement.
7) Operations and maintenance optimization.
8) Waste reduction.
Benefits of Green Building
The successful adoption of GREEN BUILDING development can
maximize both the economic and environmental performance of the
buildings. Buildings have a large effect on the environment, human
health and the economy.

What is USGBC?
USGBC was founded in 1993 as a mission-driven, membership-based
nonprofit organization. For more than 20 years, its LEED rating system has
retained its status as the crown jewel of green building standards primarily
because of USGBC’s in-depth, ongoing improvement process — an
undertaking designed and executed with the tremendous contributions of GBCI.
The U.S. Green Building Council is committed to a sustainable, prosperous
future through LEED, the leading program for green buildings and communities
worldwide.
Vision: Vision is that buildings and communities will regenerate and sustain the
health and vitality of all life within a generation.
Mission: Mission is to transform the way buildings and communities are
designed, built, and operated, enabling an environmentally and socially
responsible, healthy, and prosperous environment that improves the quality of
life.
What is GBCI?
Green Business Certification Inc. was founded in 2008 to drive
implementation of the LEED green building program. For more than a decade,
with a trusted, quality commitment, rigorous third-party certification, and
customer centric focus, GBCI has proved instrumental in ensuring LEED
remains the world’s most widely used green building program.
GBCI inspired a greater sense of awareness and understanding of LEED in the
global real estate, development and construction industries. But today, GBCI is
evolving its strategy to prepare for a major cultural shift in the sustainability field
— one where the organization helps the world move from a passing societal
awareness of the merits of LEED best practices, to a universal, mainstream
acceleration and adoption of LEED.
Together, USGBC and GBCI have created an organizational ecosystem that
provides real-time adaptability and a future proofing LEED development and
implementation process.
With around the clock advancements in strategy and execution, USGBC
maintains the LEED rating system by setting the goals for any updates made to
the rating system, drafting proposed improvements that make up a new version
of LEED, releasing beta versions as needed, considering stakeholder
recommendations and public feedback and getting a final draft approved by the
LEED Steering Committee, as well as a vote from its membership base.
What is LEED?
LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is the
most widely used green building rating system in the world.
Available for virtually all building types, LEED provides a
framework for healthy, highly efficient, and cost-saving green
buildings.
LEED certification is a globally recognized symbol of
sustainability achievement and leadership.
What is IGBC?
Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) Green Homes is the first
rating programme developed in India, exclusively for the residential
sector. It is based on accepted energy and environmental principles
and strikes a balance between known established practices and
emerging concepts.
Local Chapters Agenda:
- Faster penetration & reach
- To reach out to wider section of stakeholders
- Involve local agencies & Institutions in the Green building movement
What is GRIHA?
GRIHA is an acronym for Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment.
GRIHA is a Sanskrit word meaning – ‘Abode’.
Human Habitats (buildings) interact with the environment in various ways.
Throughout their life cycles, from construction to operation and then demolition,
they consume resources in the form of energy, water, materials, etc. and emit
wastes either directly in the form of municipal wastes or indirectly as emissions
from electricity generation. GRIHA attempts to minimize a building’s resource
consumption, waste generation, and overall ecological impact to within certain
nationally acceptable limits / benchmarks.
Our Vision
GRIHA Council, stand for credibility, integrity and inclusiveness, while
upholding Indian ethos for future-ready and sustainable habitat.
Objective
To reduce resource consumption, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and
enhance the use of renewable and recycled resources by the building sector,
• TERI (The Energy and Resources Institute) has played a crucial role
in convergence of various initiatives, essential for effective
implementation and mainstreaming of sustainable habitats in India.
With over two decades of experience on green and energy efficient
buildings, TERI has developed GRIHA (Green Rating for Integrated
Habitat Assessment), which was adopted as the national rating
system for green buildings by the Government of India in 2007
What is BEE?
• The Government of India set up Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE). on 1st
March 2002 under the provisions of the Energy Conservation Act, 2001. The
mission of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency is to assist in developing policies
and strategies with a thrust on self-regulation and market pri nciples, within
the overall framework of the Energy Conservation Act, 2001 with the primary
objective of reducing energy intensity of the Indian economy.
• Role of BEE
• BEE co-ordinates with designated consumers, designated agencies and other
organizations and recognize, identify and utilize the existing resources and
infrastructure, in performing the functions assigned to it under the Energy
Conservation Act. The Energy Conservation Act provides for regulatory and
promotional functions.
Assignment 1
• Select any one LEED certified and one GRIHA certified
building.
• Do a detailed case study (Title, Type of project, rating,
location, area, purpose of building, landscape, water,
waste, material etc.)
• Support your answers with suitable plans/ views/ siteplan
etc.
Thank You 
