2. India's three major rating systems are Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design (LEED), the rating systems from Indian Green
Building Council (IGBC) and the Green Rating for Integrated Habitat
Assessment (GRIHA).
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is the rating
system of Green Building Rating System developed by the United
States Green Building Council (USGBC).
What is the equivalent of LEED in India?
Are IGBC and LEED same? IGBC is a non-profit research institution having its
offices in CII-Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre, which is itself a LEED
certified green building. Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) has licensed
the LEED Green Building Standard from the USGBC.
3. Green Building Certifications
•BEE Star. Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) is an Autonomous Body under the Ministry
of Energy, Government of India.
•Energy Conservation Building Code (ECBC) was launched by Ministry of Power,
Government of India
•EDGE. ... Green Building Certification Inc. (GBCI)
•Estidama. ... Arabic word for sustainability-tailored to the Middle East region
•Greenco. ... CII-Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre
•GreenMark. ... Building and Construction Authority (BCA), Singapore
•GRIHA. ... The Energy and Resource Institute (TERI)
•IGBC Green. Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), part of the Confederation of Indian
Industry (CII)
•ISO 50001 - International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO)
•Qatar Sustainability Assessment System (QSAS) -T.C. Chan Center for Building
Simulation and Energy Studies at the University of Pennsylvania
•The WELL Building Standard (WELL)
•RESET Air is a standard for indoor air quality
•Fitwel Rating system
4. • How is green building rated?
Rating criteria include sustainable site design, water efficiency, energy
performance, materials selection, indoor environmental quality, etc. -
Buildings are awarded Certified, Silver, Gold or Platinum levels.
• BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment
Methodology) has so far failed altogether in India and Brazil. BREEAM
accreditation is administered by its parent company, Building Research
Establishment (BRE). It is the oldest method of assessing, rating and
certifying a building's environmental sustainability.
• If you're in the UK or Europe, BREEAM may be the natural choice as it has
been developed to align with existing laws and regulations. If you're in the
US, LEED might be more appropriate for similar reasons.
• Both LEED and IGBC are based on same platforms except the standards
referred for building performance analysis. If you are planning to work in
India then go for IGBC however LEED is internationally recognized and has it's
own advantages too.
5. • Is LEED India and IGBC same?
Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) has licensed the LEED Green Building
Standard from the USGBC.
• Is LEED applicable in India?
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED-INDIA) Green Building
Rating System is a recognized point of reference both in our country as well
as worldwide for the design, construction and further, operation of high
performance green buildings.
Today, the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design or LEED
Certificate stands as the world's most recognized green building rating
system. In India, the responsibility of administering it lies with the Green
Business Certification Inc
6. • IGBC is India's Premier certification body, headquartered at Hyderabad.
IGBC is the founding member of World Green Building Council discussing
global issues at COP Conference of the Parties (COP) and similar global platforms.
• The objective of IGBC Green New Buildings rating system is to create
environment friendly buildings
1. through architectural design,
2. water efficiency,
3. effective handling of waste,
4. energy efficiency,
5. sustainable buildings,
6. occupant comfort & well-being.
7. • What are the 7 criteria for LEED?
The LEED® rating system has seven areas of concentration;
1. Sustainable Sites
2. Water Efficiency
3. Energy and Atmosphere
4. Materials and Resources
5. Indoor Environmental Quality
6. Innovation in Design Process and
7. Regional Priority.
Projects obtain credits in these areas to achieve certification.
8. • BREEAM is more used in the United Kingdom, while LEED makes more
sense to a global corporative policy.
• LEED is the most known signature because of its presence in more
countries, but BREEAM wins at certified buildings in Europe.
• BREEAM -British and European construction law and British best practices.
LEED - United States -American ASHRAE standards.
• All rating systems are voluntary assessment methods
• Each program has a points-based rating system.
• You get points for each green building feature, and your point total
determines whether you're LEED Certified, LEED Silver, LEED Gold, or LEED
Platinum (the highest level).
• The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), part of the Confederation of
Indian Industry (CII) was formed in the year 2001.
9. Which is better IGBC or GRIHA?
GRIHA requires more renewable energy allocation than IGBC GH because
renewable energy for achieving credit points is a percentage of HVAC, lighting,
and domestic hot water consumption, whereas IGBC GH is a percentage of
common area lighting consumption.

12. • What is the world's first green building rating system?
BREEAM. BREEM, or the Building Research Establishment Environmental
Assessment Method
• Which is the first certified green building in India?
2003 -CII-Godrej GBC building in Hyderabad
• What is the motto of IGBC?
'Better Buildings, Building Better’
• Which was the first LEED building in India?
Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) Building, Hyderabad -2003
First LEED Platinum rated green building in the world outside of the United
States

20. • What sustainable practices do these green buildings incorporate?
1. renewable energy generation
2. water conservation,
3. waste management, and
4. the use of eco-friendly materials.
• A 'green' building is a building that, in its design, construction or operation,
reduces or eliminates negative impacts, and can create positive impacts, on
our climate and natural environment. Green buildings preserve precious
natural resources and improve our quality of life.
