Energy is the ability to do work and can take many forms, including electrical energy. Power is the rate of doing work and is measured in Watts. To calculate energy usage, multiply power by time. For example, a 1000 Watt toaster running for 1 hour uses 1000 Watts x 1 hour = 1000 Watt-hours or 1 kilowatt-hour (kWh) of electrical energy. Fossil fuels like gasoline and coal contain huge amounts of energy and have allowed society to develop rapidly, but also alter the environment significantly. The challenge now is transitioning away from fossil fuels to more sustainable energy sources like solar, wind and hydropower.
