This study examined the effects of consuming probiotic yogurt on serum cholesterol levels in 46 individuals with hypercholesterolemia in Shiraz, Iran. The participants were divided into two groups, with one group consuming 300g per day of probiotic yogurt containing Lactobacillus acidophilus and Bifidobacteria, and the other consuming regular yogurt, over two 6-week periods. Blood samples analyzed before and after each period found that consumption of probiotic yogurt significantly reduced LDL ("bad") cholesterol levels compared to regular yogurt. Additionally, probiotic yogurt reduced total cholesterol and increased HDL ("good") cholesterol, though not significantly. This study evaluated the biochemical and the hematological parameters in diabetic and non- diabetic patients. The measured biochemical parameters were fasting blood sugar, serum alanine aminotransferase (SGPT/ALT), total cholesterol, urea, creatinine and hematological parameters were hemoglobin, total white blood cell, neutrophil, lymphocyte,monocyte, eosinophil and ESR. There were 403 diabetic and 320 non-diabetic subjects included in this study and the study was carried out in BIRDEM (Bangladesh Institute of Research & Rehabilitation in Diabetes, Endocrine and Metabolic Disorders) General Hospital). It was observed that the mean values of SGPT/ALT (p<0.001),><0.001)><0.001)><0.001),><0.004),><0.001) of hematological parameters were significantly higher in diabetic patients than in the non-diabetic patients. In univariate analysis, all biochemical parameters and only four hematological parameters were found significantly associated with fasting blood sugar after adjusted with age and sex. The fasting blood sugar correlates highly with the other biochemical parameters but less or none with the hematological parameters. Our findings demonstrated that control of increased biochemical parameters and abnormal hematological levels in the early stage of diabetes mellitus may help the patients to raise quality of life.

ABSTRACT Chronic renal failure disease is frequently associated with anaemia and the level of anaemia correlates with the stage of chronic kidney disease (CKD). A cross-sectional study was conducted in 44 chronic kidney disease patients in the department of medicine, M.L.B. Medical College, Jhansi during the period January to June, 2018. The study was evaluating the profile of anaemia and to find the association between the severity of anaemia and ckd-5 patients time period of taking on haemodialysis. Haemoglobin, blood urea, serum albumin, serum creatinine levels were examined using standard techniques. There was a significant difference in the haemoglobin of CKD patients taking 30 days regular interval 3 times values (P <0.05). All 44 patients (100%) were anaemic there was no significant correlation between the severity of anaemia and serum creatinine levels (P > 0.82) the most frequent anaemia in chronic kidney disease patients was a malnourished type of a moderate degree anaemic (7 10mg/dl). A significant correlation was not found between the severity of anomie and serum creatinine levels 30 day interval of CKD of patients on haemodialysis. Background Cancer is a disease that involves the abnormal gowth of the cell. After growing uncontrollably in continuation, it influences and grows in other parts of the body as well 1,2 . Benign types of Tumors doesn’t invade other body parts whereas Malignant Tumor support spreading and invading other parts of the body 3 . The main objective of this work is to use Molecular Docking method to develop a drug for the treatment of Cancer. Methods Docking was used to dock all the selected ligands with target protein i.e., DNMT1. The selected ligands were Thiophene, Sulfonamides, Chalcone, and Nitroimidazole. PyRx Software was used for the purpose of virtual screening to check various properties of these selected ligands like the Binding Affinity, RMSD Lower Bound , RMSD Upper Bound etc. PyRx and SwissADME both softwares were used for finding out the Drug Likeliness of every compound and to find out the best Compound to be docked with the target protein. Chalcone was found to be the best compound for Cancer treatment having least binding affinity.Results Molecular Docking of Chalcone with DNMT1 protein was performed with the help of AutoDock Vina Software. Output showed 9 positions of different binding affinities and RMSD values both Lower Bound and Upper Bound . Furthermore, the visualization of results was done with the help of PyMOL Software.Conclusion According to this study, Chalcone was the only compound from selected ligands that may be used to treat Cancer. Chalcone may act as a promising drug for cancer treatment in future perspectives. Evaluation of the Glycaemic Index of some Staple Foods of South Eastern NigeriaPremier Publishers
Excessive release of glucose into the blood from food substances associates with metabolic disorders like diabetes. This study assessed the Glycaemic index (GI) of some staple carbohydrates foods consumed in Calabar and Southern part of Nigeria. Sixty (60) healthy volunteers aged 16 to 70 years. The test diets consisted of five food samples: Fried ripe plantain with stew and meat (FPSM); unripe plantain porridge with meat (UPPM), Garri and afang soup with meat (GASM), Fufu afang soup with meat (FASM), Abacha and fried groundnut (AFG). Fasting blood glucose, GI and available carbohydrate were estimated using standard methods. Results show that GASM and FASM had the highest GI, while FPSM had the least GI relative to glucose. The glycaemic load (GL) measured in 2 hours was highest in AFG, while FPSM had least GL. After 30 minutes, AFG had significantly (p<0.05) higher GI (6.74 ±0.12) compared with other subjects. But 120 minutes after, FPSM consumers recorded the lowest GI (4.829 ±0.10), while GASM (7.61 ±0.12) and FASM (7.34 ±0.14) were the highest. In conclusion, garri and fufu diets (AFG, FASM and GASM) have very high GI, yielding high levels of blood glucose compared with plantain diets (FPSM and UPPM) consumed in Calabar, Nigeria.

Diabetes is one of the major causes of death in the world, affecting around 422 million people or 8.5 percent of the worlds population . Diabetes mellitus, or diabetes, is a disease that causes excessive blood sugar levels. Diabetes mellitus is a condition where a person does not produce enough insulin or does not link directly to insulin, and resulting in excessively high blood sugar glucose levels. Diabetes is classified into several types Prediabetes, Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes. In diabetes research, numerous bioinformatics technologies are used. The current research was carried to study the effect of naturally occurring compounds against Aquaporin 2 as the target protein molecule with the help of molecular docking for diabetes diagnosis. AQP2 is found in the apical cell of the main ducts of the kidney and in the vesicles intracellular in the cells. Docking experiment were performed out by using aquaporin 2 4nef . The technique of molecular docking was utilized to investigate the potential of naturally occurring compounds such as aglycone, gedunin, and harman with the target protein Aquaporin 2 4nef . In diabetes, gedunin may function as a therapeutic drug against the disease causing protein Aquaporin 2 4nef . Further research and then certain clinical and pre clinical studies may be allowed to discover drugs that can be used to treat diabetes. Diabetes is a rapidly and serious health problem in Pakistan. This chronic condition is associated with serious long-term complications, including higher risk of heart disease and stroke. Aggressive treatment of hypertension and hyperlipideamia can result in a substantial reduction in cardiovascular events in patients with diabetes 1. Consequently pharmacist-led diabetes cardiovascular risk (DCVR) clinics have been established in both primary and secondary care sites in NHS Lothian during the past five years. An audit of the pharmaceutical care delivery at the clinics was conducted in order to evaluate practice and to standardize the pharmacists’ documentation of outcomes. Pharmaceutical care issues (PCI) and patient details were collected both prospectively and retrospectively from three DCVR clinics. The PCI`s were categorized according to a triangularised system consisting of multiple categories. These were ‘checks’, ‘changes’ (‘change in drug therapy process’ and ‘change in drug therapy’), ‘drug therapy problems’ and ‘quality assurance descriptors’ (‘timer perspective’ and ‘degree of change’). A verified medication assessment tool (MAT) for patients with chronic cardiovascular disease was applied to the patients from one of the clinics. The tool was used to quantify PCI`s and pharmacist actions that were centered on implementing or enforcing clinical guideline standards. A database was developed to be used as an assessment tool and to standardize the documentation of achievement of outcomes. Feedback on the audit of the pharmaceutical care delivery and the database was received from the DCVR clinic pharmacist at a focus group meeting.

The development of a new dietary adjunct with a novel natural antioxidant impact on diabetes mellitus with prevention of its long term deleterious effect on the male fertility in general has been increasingly expressed in recent time. Hence, we aim to evaluate the effects of aqueous extract of Sesame radiatum leaves on adult male Sprague Dawley rats’ testis using unbiased stereological, biochemical and hormonal studies. Thirty adult male rats were divided into three groups of 10 rats each. The treated groups; 1 and 2 received 28.0 and 14 mg/kg bwt of aqueous extract of sesame leaves via oral garvage, respectively, while the control group received equal volume of 0.9% (w/v) normal saline per day for 6 weeks. Serum follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), testosterone and blood glucose were assayed. In addition five microns of uniformly random transverse sections of processed testicular tissues were equally analyzed using an un-biased stereological study. The result showed that the mean percentage volume fractions (Vf) of epithelial cells and lumen of the testis were 76% (P<0.05)><0.05),>0.05) higher than the control in a dose related manner. Serum testosterone and FSH were significantly higher and lower, respectively, in the high dose sesame when compared to control. Sesame leaves intake improved glucose profile and testicular parameters in a dose related manner via possible improved insulin activity on the cells with a stimulatory impact on sperm production. This also confirmed its folkloric claims.

Development of novel natural dietary adjunct/agent with significant therapeutic effects on metabolic disease conditions such as obesity and heart disease raises concern in recent times. We studied chronic toxicity of the combined active ingredients present in the sesame leaves and their interaction on the fasting serum lipid profiles with their ratios in thirty adult male non-obese Sprague Dawley (SD) rats. Such that, both treated groups received 14.0 and 28.0 mg/kg body weight doses of aqueous leaves extract of Sesamum radiatum respectively on a daily basis via gastric gavage, while, the control received equal volume of normal saline daily for six weeks. Significant (P < 0.05) weight loss observed in the treated groups was associated with significant (P < 0.05) reductions in both serum cholesterol and triglycerides (TG). The effect on the serum lipoprotein cholesterol components and ratios were significant in a dose related manner, such that increase in HDL accompanied a corresponding decrease in both LDL and LDL/HDL ratio. In addition, to increased in TG/HDL ratio. However, no significant differences in the relative reduction level of VLDL and triglycerides in the treated groups were found compared to control. Thus, LDL/HDL ratio is significantly a better indicator than the TG/HDL ratio in assessing the impact of sesame treatment with evidence of weight loss and hypolipidaemia especially in hypertensive heart diseases.

The study sought to determine the extent to which the usage of social media in the marketing of agricultural products in South West Nigeria can enhance farmers turnover. It employed the survey research design to collect data with the help of a structured questionnaire to elicit information from respondents selected from six 6 south western states. Research data were analysed using structural equation modelling. The results showed that the use of social media WhatsApp and Facebook in marketing of agricultural products significantly enhances farmers turnover. The managerial implication is that use of Whatsapp and Facebook in the marketing of agricultural products for the enhancement of farmers’ turnover was found to have significant influence on the enhancement in farmers’ turnover from agricultural products. Policy makers in government should provide the enabling environment for the telecommunication companies to enhance their reach by installing their facilities across the length and breadth of the country so that the network coverage will be strong at all times so that the benefits of social media usage will not be constrained. Growing evidence for the benefits of yogurt consumption in preventing type 2 diabetes and other cardiometabolic risk factors. The importance of dairy as part of a balanced and healthy diet is widely recognised by health authorities and scientific experts worldwide. Now, evidence is mounting that consuming yogurt in particular as part of a healthy diet helps to prevent type 2 diabetes and other cardiometabolic risk factors, with one of the most recent studies suggesting that people who regularly eat yogurt are almost 30% less likely to develop type 2 diabetes than those who do not (1). Speaking to public health officials at the III World Congress of Public Health Nutrition in Spain, Dr André Marette from the Heart and Lung Institute of Laval Hospital in Quebec, Canada, said it was time to recognize the all-round health benefits of yogurt and encourage more people to eat yogurt on a daily basis.

2. (Bruckert, 2006). Numerous drugs that lower cholesterol
have been used to treat hypocholesterolemic individuals
(Berg, 1979). However, the undesirable side effects of
these compounds have caused concerns about their
therapeutic use (Erkelens et al., 1988).
Ingestion of probiotic lactic acid bacteria possibly would
be a more natural method to decrease serum cholesterol
concentrations in humans (McNamara et al., 1989).
Probiotics are being investigated as lowering agents.
Probiotics, the useful microbes, play a critical role in
sustaining health condition and they can create a balance
between the useful and harmful microbes, once they are
settled in the intestines (particularly the distal end of large
intestine) and as a result leave positive impacts on the
organs and especially the digestive tract (Fuller, 1992).
So this study was conducted to see the effects of
probiotic yoghurt on serum cholesterol in some
individuals.
Cardiovascular diseases and the related complications
are among serious health issues in modern times. Both
national and international figures are indicative of high
prevalence rates of such conditions, increasing referrals
to health centers, and rising mortality rates.
High cholesterol level is a major causative agent.
Dietary and nutritional cares, daily balanced food ingre-
dients and avoiding overuse of fats especially saturated
ones can help ward off the fat deposit in tissues and
blood vessels.
Investigations involving the role of probiotics in
preventing the increased level of total cholesterol, LDL
and balancing the LDL and HDL levels and consequently
preventing and reducing the rate of cardiovascular
diseases and mortalities which have been reported in
numerous studies.
Probiotics are the useful microbes which play an
influential role in maintaining human health condition, as
shown in reported studies across the world. The following
are the positive contributions of probiotics to health
conditions in humans:
1. Treatment of severe infections, diarrhea especially in
children
2. Preventing microbial, hospital acquired and travelers’
diarrheas and also antibiotic induced diarrhea
3. Preventing the occurrence of atopic diseases
4. Preventing the allergic conditions
5. Preventing the post surgery infections
6. Lowering the blood cholesterol level, balancing LDL
and HDL levels and raising HDL levels
7. Controlling, preventing, and treating gastric ulcer
caused by Helicobacter pylori
Mann and Sporry were among the first investigators who
demonstrated the reducing effects of fermented milk on
cholesterol concentration (Gary et al., 2000). Gillard et al.
(2000) from Oklahoma University conducted several
studies on the absorption and decomposition of
cholesterol by Lactobacillus acidophilus in vitro and the

results confirmed the capabilities of such bacteria in
absorbing and decomposing cholesterol.
There are different mechanisms responsible for the
reduced serum cholesterol by the bacteria, the most
important of which are as follows:
1. Deconjugation of bile, bile salt and cholesterol deposit
through deconjugation of the bile.
2. Hydrolysis of bile salts and bond with bile and lack of
bile reabsorption
3. Increasing absorption of cholesterol by the bacteria
To ensure the reducing effect of probiotics on the
cholesterol through the above- mentioned mechanisms,
the probiotic microorganisms including L. acidophilus and
Bifidobacteria should pass through the digestive tract
intact and alive and then reach their activity locus in the
large intestine.
Although the same reducing effects have been
observed in the bacteria existing in the normal yoghurt
under lab conditions, the reason why they are as effective
as Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus and
Streptococcus thermophilus in the probiotic yoghurt is
that they cannot pass through the above mentioned route
intact and alive (Naruszewicz et al., 2002). So, this study
was conducted to see the effects of probiotic yoghurt on
serum cholesterol in some individuals.
METHODS
This is a cross-sectional prospective study which is one side
blinded. Having reviewed the periodic blood tests results in Fars
Pegah dairy Company staff and Shiraz university of Medical
Sciences personnel, 46 participants of the age range of 20 - 67
years with serum total cholesterol level of 200 - 304 mg/dl were
enrolled in the study. The procedures were under the supervision of
the trained physician team and the informed written consents were
obtained from the participants. As the physician instructed, the
participants were not allowed to take reducing cholesterol
medications and they were examined for history of cardiovascular
diseases, diarrhea, and renal disorders. During the study,
consumption of cholesterol reducing or raising agents was not
allowed.
Initially blood samples were taken from all the participants which
was carried out in Shiraz Pasteur Lab to measure total cholesterol
LDL and HDL levels and the results were recorded. Height and
weight measurements were also performed and the data were
recorded. The participants were also instructed not to change their
diets or physical activities and were asked to promptly report any
sudden change or complications in their conditions to the physician
team.
For four weeks, the subjects consumed 200 cc/day low fat
sterilized milk and were asked not to have yoghurt. Then they were
divided into two groups; the first group consisting of Shiraz
University of Medical sciences personnel and the second were
selected from Fars Pegah Dairy company staff. At the outset, blood
samples were taken for measuring LDL and HDL.
The first group received 300 gr/day of probiotic yoghurt con-
taining L. acidophilus and Bifidobacteria for 6 weeks and parallel to
it the second group received 300 gr/day of normal yoghurt
containing L. delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus and S. thermophilus.
Following this period, blood samples were taken to measure

total cholesterol, LDL and HDL levels, and the results were
recorded.
Afterwards, both groups received 200 ml/day sterilized milk for an
interval of 4 weeks. Prior to the second phase of the study, blood
samples as previously mentioned, were taken for all the subjects in
both groups. It is worth mentioning that all the milk products
including sterilized milk, normal and probiotic yoghurts are
produced by Fars Pegah Dairy Company, Shiraz, Iran. Data
analysis was done using SPSS version 11. Paired t test was used
for comparing the quantitative variables and p values less than 0.05
were considered significant.
RESULTS
The study was carried out on 46 individuals consisting of
14 females and 32 males. Because of medical reasons
and personal problems, 11 cases were excluded from the
second phase of the study. The results indicated that LDL
level was significantly reduced following the consumption
of probiotic yoghurt but this was not the case with normal
yoghurt consumption (p = 0.003). The differences
between total cholesterol and LDL levels following the
consumption of probiotic and normal yoghurts were not
significant. The other factors including total cholesterol
with 31.5 units of average reduction and HDL with 14
units average increase were not significant and
meaningful statistically (Table 1).
DISCUSSION
Considering the above mentioned findings, we can
suggest that probiotic yoghurt containing 10

counts of L.
acidophilus and Bifidobacteria per milliliter can
significantly reduce the LDL level (p = 0.003). Also, the
reduced level of cholesterol in the first group following the
consumption of probiotic yoghurt was 30 units which was
significant (p = 0/00.). The finding that bifidobacterium-
fermented milk lowers serum total cholesterol concen-
trations agrees with data from other studies involving
various milk products containing selected strains of lactic
acid bacteria. These results were in agreement with the
results of another study done in Iran which concluded
that Consumption of probiotic yogurt in comparison with
ordinary yogurt caused a significant decrease in serum
total cholesterol (Ataie-Jafari et al., 2009).
In another study done by Xiao et al. (2003) on rats,
they also concluded that probiotics have the potential to
improve serum lipid, but the only difference in this study
was the bacteria strain which was different from the
present study. Randomized, double-blind, and placebo
controlled studies also demonstrated significant reduc-
tions in serum total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol by a
milk product fermented with Enterococcus faecium and
two strains of S. thermophilus (Agerbak et al., 1995;
Richelsen and Kristensen, 1996). Kiessling and
Schneider (2002) observed that consumption of yogurt
increased the serum concentration of HDL-cholesterol
and lead to the desired improvement of the LDL/HDL
cholesterol ratio (Kiessling and Schneider, 2002).
However, regarding the type of study (intervention) and
reduced 20 units in the second group, the reduction is not
statistically significant.
Furthermore, the reduced total cholesterol level in the
second group following the consumption of probiotic
yoghurt (31.55 unit) was significant (p = 0.001). The
results suggest that decreased total cholesterol and LDL
levels and increased HDL levels are due to the capa-
bilities of probiotic bacteria including L. acidophilus and
Bifidobacteria to reduce the cholesterol level through
cholesterol absorption mechanism in the cell walls, the
decongugation of bile (biliary salts) and biliary salt
hydrolysis. The insignificant decrease of total cholesterol
levels and increased HDL levels, despite the significant
decrease of total cholesterol level in both groups
following the consumption of probiotic yoghurt and
significant increase of HDL level in the first group
following the probiotic yoghurt intake, all can be attributed
to the participants’ avoidance in taking the given food,
attention to serum total cholesterol level and increased
physical activities in the second group coming from Fars
Pegah Milk Company. The results also lend support to
the hypothesis that significant LDL reduced levels occur
in the cases with mild to moderate hypercholesterolemia.
Meanwhile, the reduced levels of total cholesterol in both
groups following the consumption of probiotic yoghurt
was significant. Following the intervention, the difference
was no longer significant.
The mechanisms of serum lipid improvement have
been suggested from in vitro and in vivo studies. In vitro
experiments demonstrated that intestinal lactic acid
bacteria have the capacity to assimilate and bind chole-
sterol as well as bile acids with the bacterial cells
(Gilliland et al., 1985). From these results, it is conceivable
that serum total cholesterol is reduced by inhibiting
absorption in the intestine as a result of the assimilation
and binding of cholesterol as well as bile acids by the
4. lactic acid bacteria. Promotion of bile acid excretion due
to deconjugation to produce free bile acids was proposed
as another mechanism for serum lipid improvement. It is
known that the serum cholesterol level decreases when a
component suppresses resorption of bile acid in the
intestine because the catabolism of cholesterol is
promoted in the liver.
Further studies could be conducted on individuals who
are strictly controlled. Finally, as the study demonstrated,
it is suggested that individuals with hypercholesterolemia
(Mild to moderate cases) consume probiotic yoghurt
containing L. acidophilus and Bifidobacteria with the
amount of 10

counts per ml. The consumption can
reduce LDL levels in such cases.
