Sophie: Hey Dad, what’s for dinner?
Dad: Tonight it’s chicken curry.
Sophie: That green curry with the fried rice? Ugh. It was
too salty, and I think I got an upset stomach
from the coconut cream.
Dad: No, that was the spicy Thai curry. You’re right. It
would have tasted better if I hadn’t put so much
salt in it. Tonight, I’m making Indian chicken
masala curry with boiled rice. We had it last
Tuesday, remember?
Sophie: Mmm. It was really tasty, with white rice?
Dad: Yes, but this time, we’re having brown rice
instead of white.
Sophie: Oh, but brown rice is horrible!
Dad: Brown rice is healthier than white. It’s got more
nutrients and minerals – like magnesium …
Sophie: Mag-what?
Dad: Mag-ne-si-um – it keeps your heart healthy.
Brown rice is also a complex carbohydrate.
That means it doesn’t cause your blood sugar
to rise quickly.
Sophie: We learnt about that in biology class. So, if
Grandpa ate it, it would help his diabetes.
Dad: Exactly. Brown rice has also got about 43%
more protein that white rice. That’s what
Dr Shafir said on Health101 – or was it
DietSOS?
Sophie: Dad, I understand, but not everything they say
in these health podcasts is right.
Dad: Well, it’s a known fact that brown rice contains
a nutrient called manganese, and that protects
the brain. You’ve got a maths exam in two
days, Sophie, so …

Dad: Oh, I give up. White rice it is – it’ll be ready
in 20 minutes.
Sophie: Thanks Dad! I’m looking forward to your
delicious curry.

Presenter: Welcome to our health podcast. With us
today is Dr John Thomas to tell us about the
results of a survey on nutrition. Dr Thomas …
Dr Thomas: In 2017, the British Nutrition Foundation did
a survey. They asked 5,000 5-to-16-year-olds
questions about different types of food and
found that many of the children didn’t know
where everyday foods come from. For
example, fish fingers are a popular fried food
in the UK. If I asked you what fish fingers are
made from, you would probably say – well, at
least I hope you would say – fish! But 18% of
the 5-to-7-year-olds in the survey thought fish
fingers are made from chicken! Yes, fish and
chicken are both types of protein – but they’re
certainly not the same thing! And 13% of
8-to-11-year-olds thought pasta comes from
an animal. What’s more, a quarter – that’s
one in four – of 5-to-11-year-olds thought
cheese comes from plants. Incredible, isn’t it?
If I hadn’t read the results of the survey,
I wouldn’t have believed it!
But if you thought this was only a problem
among younger children, you’d be wrong.
The government recommends eating a
minimum of five fruits or vegetables every
day. Would you believe that 11% of both the
younger and older children consider
fruit-flavoured sweets part of their
five-a-day? True, sweets are tasty, but they
aren’t very healthy. They don’t contain
vitamins and minerals like fresh fruit!
The results of this survey are quite worrying.
If children continue to eat badly, they’ll have
serious health problems later in life. That’s
