This document provides an overview of the transition from classical Newtonian physics to modern physics through Einstein's theories of relativity and the development of quantum mechanics. It discusses how Newton's view of absolute space and time and deterministic universe was overturned by Einstein's theory of special relativity in 1905. This challenged the concepts of absolute simultaneity and showed that time is relative depending on the observer's frame of reference. The document then discusses how Einstein further developed his general theory of relativity in 1915, replacing the concept of gravitational force with that of spacetime being curved by mass and energy. This marked a transition to a new era of physics beyond the limits of Newtonian mechanics.

This document provides background information on the development of modern physics leading up to Einstein's theory of special relativity in 1905. It discusses the failures of classical physics to explain new experimental findings, particularly regarding light and the Michelson-Morley experiment. It then summarizes Einstein's two postulates of special relativity and some of the theory's key implications, such as time dilation and length contraction. The document also briefly outlines some experiments that tested and confirmed predictions of special relativity.
The document summarizes key aspects of Einstein's special theory of relativity, including:
1) It showed that Newton's ideas of absolute space and time were incorrect and implied that matter and energy are interconvertible.
2) It established two postulates - the laws of physics apply in all inertial frames, and the speed of light is constant in all frames.
3) This leads to effects like time dilation and length contraction, as measurements of space and time differ for observers in different inertial frames moving relative to one another.

1) Albert Einstein developed the theory of relativity, which describes the laws of physics for both non-accelerating and accelerating frames of reference.
2) The theory of special relativity, published in 1905, describes motion at constant velocity while general relativity, published in 1915, describes accelerated frames and gravity.
3) One of the most famous equations in physics, E=mc2, comes from the theory of relativity and shows that mass and energy are equivalent and interconvertible.
The special theory of relativity proposed in 1905 by Einstein describes how measurements of time, space, and phenomena appear different in reference frames moving at constant velocity relative to each other. Unlike Newtonian mechanics, special relativity is not restricted to a particular type of phenomenon and instead affects all fundamental physical theories. The theory of relativity led to profound changes in how we perceive space and time, showing that measurements are not the same in different reference frames moving relative to one another.

1. The document discusses Albert Einstein's theory of general relativity and how it improved upon Isaac Newton's theory of gravity.
2. General relativity explains gravity as a distortion of spacetime caused by massive objects, rather than an attractive force.
3. Some key predictions of general relativity include gravitational time dilation, gravitational lensing of light, and gravitational waves. The theory has been confirmed by various observational tests.
An artist painting an oil painting illustrates quantum atom theory and the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, as the artist is manipulating subatomic particles but is uncertain of the final outcome. Every movement by the artist starts at the quantum level and has uncertainty in momentum and position. Recent experiments have challenged Heisenberg's uncertainty principle by measuring subatomic particles without disturbing them. Quantum entanglement and spooky actions from a distance connect particles over vast distances instantly, and may one day allow quantum teleportation and encryption.
This document provides an introduction to black holes from both a theoretical physics and astronomical perspective. It describes how black holes form from the gravitational collapse of massive stars and discusses their key properties, including their event horizons and singularities based on solutions to Einstein's equations. The document uses diagrams of light cones to visualize how black holes distort spacetime and discusses how time appears frozen for distant observers watching objects cross the event horizon. It aims to build intuition for some basic yet profound concepts regarding black holes.
Absolute truth is conceptualized with reference to meaning and procedure, within the limits of self-containment, which is a characteristic feature that is shared commonly between the universe, humans, and the institutions that they establish in society; and the human intellect is presented as being endowed with the capacity to appreciate it, given the appropriate environment
1. Isaac Newton conceived of time as absolute and flowing uniformly, an idea that was later disproven by Einstein's theory of relativity.
2. Einstein's special theory of relativity established that the laws of physics are the same in all inertial frames of reference and that the speed of light is constant, independent of the motion of the observer.
3. As a result of Einstein's theory, time is shown to flow at different rates for observers in different reference frames, as demonstrated by the fact that clocks moving at high speeds are measured to tick slower than identical clocks at rest.
The Big Bang model postulates that the universe began as a hot dense state around 13.8 billion years ago and has since expanded and cooled. It is supported by two theoretical pillars: general relativity, which describes gravity as the curvature of spacetime, and the cosmological principle that the universe is homogeneous and isotropic on large scales. The model accounts for the cosmic microwave background radiation and expansion of the universe, but is incomplete as it does not explain structure formation or the universe's uniformity on the largest scales.
1) The document discusses the philosophy of space and time and how Einstein introduced his theories of special and general relativity.
2) Special relativity is valid when no forces act, while general relativity removes this restriction to apply to gravitational forces as well.
3) Tests of general relativity have confirmed its predictions regarding Mercury's orbit, light deflection, gravitational lensing, and gravitational waves.
1) Light is the ultimate tool for understanding the universe, as almost all information we have about the cosmos comes from light.
2) Light was first emitted around 379,000 years after the Big Bang, and the discovery of the cosmic microwave background radiation provided evidence of this first light.
3) Understanding light led to breakthroughs like the invention of lenses and telescopes, and the realization that light behaves as both a particle and a wave. Max Planck's work on blackbody radiation helped establish the foundations of quantum mechanics and spectroscopy.

String theory proposes that fundamental particles are not point-like but are tiny vibrating strings. It aims to unify quantum mechanics and general relativity by incorporating gravity into a theory of everything at very small scales. String theory predicts that spacetime has 10 dimensions rather than the observed 4 dimensions, with the extra 6 dimensions being curled up too small to detect directly. While strings have never been observed, string theory remains a promising area of research as the only known way to reconcile quantum mechanics and general relativity.
Einstein's theory of general relativity revolutionized our understanding of gravity by describing it in terms of the warping of space-time by massive objects. It established that large celestial bodies distort the very fabric of space-time around them rather than gravity being an external force. General relativity provided mathematical equations relating the curvature of space-time to the distribution of mass and energy. It made several novel predictions that have been confirmed by experiments, including gravitational lensing and gravitational time dilation. The theory remains crucial to modern astrophysics and cosmology, helping explain phenomena like black holes, gravitational waves, and the expansion of the universe.
General relativity is Einstein's theory of gravitation published in 1915. It explains gravitational phenomena by describing how spacetime is curved by mass and energy. Some key points:
- General relativity superseded Newton's theory of gravity and describes gravity not as a force but as a curvature of spacetime.
- Einstein made several predictions with general relativity including the bending of starlight and gravitational time dilation, which have all been confirmed by observations.
- Tests of general relativity include measuring the precession of Mercury's orbit, the deflection of starlight near the sun, and gravitational redshift of light escaping gravitational fields.

2. La fisica classica:
il modello newtoniano
Dalla seconda metà del Seicento alla fine
dell’Ottocento, il modello meccanicistico
newtoniano dominò tutto il pensiero scientifico:
erede naturale dell’atomismo antico e della
rigida separazione cartesiana tra res cogitans e
res extensa, la meccanica newtoniana fu
considerata per lungo tempo la teoria definitiva
con la quale era possibile descrivere tutti i
fenomeni naturali, fino a quando non vennero
scoperti i fenomeni elettrici e magnetici (non
spiegabili con le leggi di Newton)…
lucio celot - La nuova fisica
2
3. Oggi sappiamo che il modello
newtoniano è valido soltanto
per i corpi formati da un
grandissimo numero di atomi
e
per velocità molto inferiori
rispetto a quella della luce.
Quando non è soddisfatta la
prima condizione, la meccanica
classica deve essere sostituita
dalla meccanica quantistica.
Quando non si verifica la
seconda condizione deve
essere applicata la teoria della
relatività.
lucio celot - La nuova fisica
Isaac Newton
(1643-1727)
3
4. Lo «scenario» dell’universo newtoniano è lo
spazio tridimensionale della geometria euclidea
classica: un «contenitore» assoluto, immobile e
immutabile all’interno del quale si trovano i
corpi:
uguale e immobile.
(I.Newton, Principi matematici della filosofia naturale,
1687)
lucio celot - La nuova fisica
4
5. Allo stesso modo, i mutamenti e movimenti
(I.Newton, cit.)
costituita (cfr. Democrito).
lucio celot - La nuova fisica
5
6. Rispetto all’atomismo antico, quello di Newton
𝑭 = 𝑮
𝒎𝟏
𝒎𝟐
𝒅𝟐
Tale forza si manifesta istantaneamente e a
qualsiasi distanza: pertanto, tutti i mutamenti
determinismo:
lucio celot - La nuova fisica
6
lucio celot - La nuova fisica 7
e J.C.Maxwell a metà Ottocento.
lucio celot - La nuova fisica
9
Newton).
lucio celot - La nuova fisica
10
11. Faraday immagina il campo come formato da
fasci di linee sottilissime (infinitamente sottili)
che riempiono lo spazio, una specie di
ragnatela gigantesca e invisibile che riempie
tutto attorno a noi.
Queste «linee» sono chiamate linee di forza,
perché «portano in giro» la forza elettrica e
magnetica, come cavi che tirano e spingono:
lucio celot - La nuova fisica
11
12. Dopo Faraday, J.Maxwell traduce
matematicamente il comportamento delle
linee di forza: le equazioni di Maxwell
descrivono il campo elettrico e il campo
magnetico.
Faraday e Maxwell hanno modificato la
struttura del mondo dopo due secoli di
ininterrotti successi del modello newtoniano:
lucio celot - La nuova fisica
12
13. La nuova fisica
I problemi del linguaggio sono qui veramente
gravi. Noi desideriamo parlare in qualche modo
della struttura degli atomi ma non possiamo
parlare degli atomi servendoci del linguaggio
ordinario […]
questi esperimenti atomici?
(W.Heisenberg, Fisica e filosofia, 1958)
lucio celot - La nuova fisica
13
penetrando.
(F.Capra, Il Tao della fisica, 1975)
lucio celot - La nuova fisica
14
15. a) Einstein:
qualcos’altro:
lucio celot - La nuova fisica 15
assoluta).
lucio celot - La nuova fisica 16
17. Facendo un esperimento ideale
proposto dallo stesso Einstein,
consideriamo un treno che si muove a
grande velocità rispetto a un
osservatore 01 che si trova a terra,
lungo i binari. Un secondo osservatore
02 si trova sul treno, esattamente nel
punto medio di un vagone. A un certo
punto, qualcuno provoca l’esplosione di
due petardi sui binari, in
corrispondenza delle due estremità del
vagone:
lucio celot - La nuova fisica
17
18. Mentre i raggi luminosi si
propagano, il treno si
sposta (nel nostro
esempio) verso sinistra.
Quindi 02 vede prima
l'esplosione che avviene
alla testa del vagone e
soltanto dopo un certo
intervallo di tempo vede
l'esplosione che ha avuto
luogo in coda al vagone:
non c'è dubbio che,
secondo lui, le due
esplosioni NON sono state
simultanee (mentre lo
sono per 01). Allora i due
eventi che stiamo
esaminando, cioè le due
esplosioni, sono stati
simultanei o no?
lucio celot - La nuova fisica
18
specificazioni temporali («prima», «dopo»,
all’osservatore…
lucio celot - La nuova fisica
20
Terra:
massimo avvicinamento: 182 secondi, poco più
di 3 minuti
massima distanza: 1.342 secondi, poco più di 22
minuti
distanza media: 751 secondi, poco più di 12,5
minuti
Dunque, un ipotetico osservatore su Marte Om
vedrebbe il fascio di luce 3, 22 o 12,5 min.
«prima» di un osservatore sulla Terra Ot…
lucio celot - La nuova fisica
21
22. Allora, nell’esempio precedente il «presente»
di Om NON è il presente di Ot, per il quale è
invece «futuro» (la luce non è ancora visibile);
futura. Questa è la teoria della relatività
ristretta.

lucio celot - La nuova fisica 22
24. Questo «presente esteso», la cui durata
dipende dalla distanza spaziale dell’evento
rispetto all’osservatore,
valore «ontologico».
Non possiamo dire che un evento «accade
proprio ora»: il «proprio ora» non esiste,
non esiste la simultaneità assoluta, non
esiste un insieme di eventi nell’universo
che siano tutti esistenti «adesso».
lucio celot - La nuova fisica
24
26. Il nostro «adesso» esiste solo qui. L’insieme
lucio celot - La nuova fisica
26
27. Riassumendo:
classica non ha significato fisico;
la simultaneità assoluta non esiste;
«scorra» uguale per tutti gli osservatori;

cadono e perché i pianeti e i corpi celesti
toccano possano attrarsi reciprocamente:
lucio celot - La nuova fisica 28
29. Lo spazio newtoniano si rifaceva a
quello democriteo (non essere): un
contenitore vuoto, uno «scatolone»
rigido per contenere l’Universo
all’interno del quale si muovono i
corpi.
Einstein raccoglie due problemi:
come descrivere il campo
gravitazionale?
cos’è davvero lo spazio di Newton?
- Ed ecco lo straordinario colpo di
genio di Einstein, uno dei più
grandi colpi d’ala nel pensiero
dell’umanità: se il campo
gravitazionale fosse proprio lo
spazio di Newton? Questa idea,
semplice, bellissima, folgorante, è
la teoria della relatività generale.
- (C.Rovelli, cit.)
lucio celot - La nuova fisica
…la più bella delle teorie…

30. lucio celot - La nuova fisica
Di che cosa è fatto il mondo?
La «rivoluzione» della nuova fisica:
30
spazio curvo
(geometria
non euclidea)
lucio celot - La nuova fisica
31
32. lucio celot - La nuova fisica
sferica)…
lucio celot - La nuova fisica 33
34. A causa della curvatura
gravitazionale, si incurvano
anche la luce (immagine a
sinistra) e il tempo.
Dalla relatività ristretta
sappiamo che spazio e tempo
sono uniti inscindibilmente: la
curvatura del campo influenza
anche lo scorrere del tempo,
che non scorre con la stessa
rapidità che avrebbe in uno
spazio «piano».
Le previsioni di Einstein, poi
confermate da calcoli
successivi, vogliono che in
prossimità di un campo
gravitazionale o alle alte
velocità il tempo scorra più
lentamente:
lucio celot - La nuova fisica
34
superficie (gravità maggiore) rispetto a località
poste più in alto (gravità minore):
lucio celot - La nuova fisica 35

C.Rovelli, cit.
36. L’intera struttura dello spaziotempo è
inestricabilmente legata alla
distribuzione della materia. Lo spazio
è curvo in misura diversa e il tempo
scorre diversamente in punti diversi
dell’universo. Siamo quindi giunti a
comprendere che le idee di spazio
euclideo tridimensionale e di tempo
che scorre linearmente sono limitate
alla nostra esperienza ordinaria del
mondo fisico e devono essere
completamente abbandonate quando
ampliamo questa esperienza.
(F.Capra, cit.)
lucio celot - La nuova fisica 36
37. c) La meccanica quantistica
atomico e subatomico.
lucio celot - La nuova fisica 37
validi. Eppure è proprio ciò che la fisica
moderna ci costringe a fare quando andiamo
oltre le dimensioni medie. Non ha più senso
parlare di «spazio vuoto» in astrofisica e
cosmologia […] mentre il concetto di corpo
solido è stato spazzato via dalla fisica
atomica[…]
(F.Capra, cit.)
lucio celot - La nuova fisica
38
come unità singole.
lucio celot - La nuova fisica 39
40. Il danese Niels Bohr, che a
inizio secolo studia la
struttura dell’atomo, si
rifà alla scoperta di
Einstein e ipotizza che
anche gli elettroni
abbiano un’energia che
assume solo alcuni valori:
come per la luce, anche
l’energia degli elettroni
ha una struttura
«granulare»,
«quantistica», che sembra
essere una caratteristica
molto generale della
natura:
lucio celot - La nuova fisica 40
lucio celot - La nuova fisica
41
alcune;
un’altra;
poiché in ogni orbita l’elettrone acquisisce (o
lucio celot - La nuova fisica 42
43. La quantizzazione dell’energia rappresentava una
smentita della convinzione millenaria della
continuità dei processi naturali: l’antica massima
natura non facit saltus veniva violata dal
comportamento dell’elettrone.
particolare:
lucio celot - La nuova fisica 43
44. La natura statistica e probabilistica della fisica
quantistica.
probabilisticamente i movimenti: W.Heisenberg
posizione nello spazio…
lucio celot - La nuova fisica 44
lucio celot - La nuova fisica
45

entrambe contemporaneamente…
lucio celot - La nuova fisica
48
comportano come corpuscoli (Newton), in altre
come onde (Maxwell).
L’esperimento della «doppia fenditura» è
considerato da molti fisici fondamentale per la
comprensione della meccanica quantistica:
lucio celot - La nuova fisica 49
lucio celot - La nuova fisica 50
lucio celot - La nuova fisica 51
lucio celot - La nuova fisica 52
53. In conclusione:
pensiero e l’intuizione del filosofo greco;
vibrano in modo casuale, continuo, imprevedibile;
«accadono».
lucio celot - La nuova fisica 53
55. lucio celot - La nuova fisica 55
