009 trans fluids and service

  • 2. Transmission Fluids  ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) must do the following: ◦ Transfer energy ◦ Lubricate ◦ Trap contaminates ◦ Clean internal parts
  • 3.  Additives in ATF provide additional protection ◦ Dispersants/detergents  Keep parts moving and clean ◦ Friction modifiers  Change the fluids coefficient of friction ◦ Seal swellers  Keeps seals pliable and swelled to compensate for wear ◦ Foam inhibitors  Prevent air bubbles from forming Transmission Fluids

  • 28. Transmission “Flush” Machines • Machine does NOT FLUSH transmission • Machine is a fluid exchanger • Allows fluid in COOLER and TORQUE CONVERTER to be exchanged • Filter should be changed before exchange • Avoid use of “Snake Oils”

  1. Before proceeding with the test drive it is important to verify fluid level and condition. ATF is the life blood of the transmission and serves several important roles. Checking the fluid prior to the test drive ensures the transmission will not be damaged during the test drive and may provide important diagnostic clues. Late model Toyota vehicles employ two types of transmissions with different ways for checking and adjusting ATF level: Conventional Dipstick Type (Left) Overflow Type (Right) For both types, it is important to ensure proper fluid temperature when checking fluid level. This is especially important while checking the overflow type transmission. These transmissions have a set temperature range to observe fluid trickle from the overflow tube. Common practice for overflow type transmissions is to verify no external leaks prior to test drive. Fluid adjustment is considered a repair attempt.
  2. In the past, technicians relied on fluid color to determine condition. This practice is no longer valid for fluid condition diagnosis. The chemical formulations of new ATF types, the removal of asbestos from friction materials, and the addition of resin contribute to changes in color of normal-condition fluids. A dark clear brown or dark clear red fluid color does not by itself indicate a failed unit. To get a better indication of fluid condition, place a sample of the fluid on a white paper towel. Any of the following fluid sample conditions may indicate a problem internal to the transmission. The need to replace the transmission, however, cannot be determined based on fluid condition alone. Residue or flaky particles of metal or friction material. Heavily varnished fluid which is tacky and no longer clear. Milky appearing fluid caused by engine coolant or other liquids entering the transmission. Coolant may cause friction materials to loosen from the clutch and brake plates and the torque converter lock-up clutch. Do not install a replacement unit until the cause of the coolant leak is found and corrected, and the ATF cooler is flushed.
