4. Introduction
The InternshipcompanyIhad appliedisArkitekN.Kang.Itis locatedinpuchongareawhichis justnearto IOI Mall
Puchong. AlthoughIhadappliedforquite afew companiesaroundthe area,the othercompanieshadrejectedmy
internshiprequestdue tooverflownumberof internstudents.The companyacceptedmyrequestandtoldme to start
workingin3rd
of January. The companyisa small-sizedcompany,runningbyfew architects,designersanddraftsmen.
Due to the limitednumberof workersthere,everyone washavingtheirowndutiesandeverysingle of themwasin
charge of differentpositions. Myfriend,TeckWei andIwere the onlyTaylor’sinternsthere.
Week1
Project:Merrivale House andKarismaArtMaster Plan
On the veryfirstweek,we were assignedtodothe verybasicstuff whichwasto designthe façade of the terrace houses.
The projectname is Merrivale House anditis almostfinishedindesign,exceptthe façade of the housesdue tothe
demandandrequirementof the specificclient. We were toldtodesignin2D (autocad) andimportintoSketchup(3D).I
was a little bitjitteryasthatwasmy firsttime usingSketchupsoftware as3D designtool.UsuallyI wasusing
Rhinoceroussoftware tobuildupmy3D. The processof learningSkecthupwasabittoughfor me,as I don’tknowhow
to use the verybasic functionsof the software. So,Ihadto learnfrom others,especiallyfromthe experiencedworkers
there to learnaboutthe software. Also,Iwasseekinghelpfrommyfriendandwebsite (Youtube) duringthe design
process. I didmake a lot of mistakeswhichcausedthe mismatchof 2D and 3D drawings,soI neededtotryagainand
again.At the same time,Iwas toldto do some coloringonthe plandrawings.The projectname isKarismaArt Master
Plan.I thoughtitwouldbe an easytask as itonlyrequiresphotoshopsoftware tomake the workdone.The project
requiredsharpanddeepcoloringinordertocatch the attentionof the client.Ihadto askedfor helpfromthe architect
incharge to learnmore aboutthe photoshopskill,likemakingcertainareaswithshadowsandreal image.The project
tookme forabout a week tofinishasthere were some minorchangeshere andthere onthe coloringparts.

5. Week2
Project:Merrivale House,BangloHouse Design andsite inspection
On the secondweek,we were doingthe same designonthe Merrivale House project.The designrequiredchangesfrom
time to time andwe alreadystartedto getusedto it.Meanwhile,one of the designersuddenlyassignedme toworkon
the designof a banglo house.The projectclientwasstayingoverseas(Australia) andhe wasa goodfriendof my
companyboss.He demandedforawesternlookdesigninordertosuitedthe designthere. The projectrequiredsome
designchangeshere andthere usingSketchupsoftware.Andagain,Ihadnot managedtomaster the software yet,soI
had messedupsome of the parts. The designertoldme how toput suitable materialsintothe buildinginSketchupand
also,she had givenme some house reference tome inorderto gainsome inspirationfromthem. Itwasamazingwhat
Sketchupsoftware coulddoandI knewIhave much more to learnfrom her.Inorder tohave a betterdesign,Ialso
searchonline andfoundsome designswhichwerequite suitthe taste of the client.Withaproperguidance,Ihad
managedto putthe 3D altogetherinone piece. Besidesfromsoftwaredesign,Ihadthe opportunitytohave a site
inspectionwithone of the architectthere toEcoworld.The terrace houseswere finishedbuiltadtheystartedto have
inspectioninsome of the displayunits.

6. Week3
Project:BangloHouse Design,Chinese NewYearcard
On the thirdweek, the bosstoldme to change the designall of a suddenasthe clientwanteditthatwayand I just
changeditagain accordingto hisinstruction. Some of the materialswere wrongintermswiththe buildingdesignandI
had to change it againinSketchup.Besidesthe buildingdesign,IwasinstructedtodesignacompanyChinese NewYear
card in orderto sendto othercompaniesasChinese New Yearwasjustaroundthe corner. The architecttoldme about
the color andpattern requirements.She wantedagoldenchickendancinginthe middle of the cardas a signof
prosperityandgloriousinChinese FengShui.Itwasquite apleasantandinterestingsmall project, asIcould use all the
skill Ihad gotin Photoshopsto designthe card. We hadgone throughlotsof goldenchickenonline andfinally,she was
fondof one andonlygoldenchicken.Andso,Ihad putthe selectedgoldenchickeninthe cardand sentit to her.After
some changesinthe coloringand typingpart,she was satisfiedandsentthe card to all the clientsbyemail.Itwasa nice
and freshexperiencetome.

From week4until week6,besideshavingsome minorchangesonthe banglodesign,Iwasbeingtoldtodesignan
educationcenterina city.The designhadto be modernand alsosuitthe site.The projectrequired 3Ddesignand
renderingwhichmeansIalsoneededtolearnaboutnew renderingsoftwarelikeLumion.Previously,Ialwaysused
software like 3Dmax renderingtorenderthe image butthe resultswere notthat good.So,like usual,Istartedto search
for more designrelatedtothe educationcenter. There wasasmall libraryatthe 2nd
floorof the companywhich
providedusa lotof bookreference aboutdesignsandthe designersalwaysencouragedustodomore researchfrom
there. Initially,Ihaddesigned glassshapedbuildingwithroof garden.Itwastootransparentandthe designwasabit
boring.The bosswas not happyaboutit because Icouldnot manage to reachthe standardhe wanted.Afterthat,under
the properguidance of the experienceddesigner,I managedtocome out witha curve shapedbuildingwhichlarge
balconiesineachfloor.The balconyallowedpeople tohave activityandinteractionwitheachotherindailylife. The 3D
designcanbe done well inSketchup, butforthe renderingpart,Ipreferredtomake it inLumionsoftware,asitwas
much easierandsmoothonmy laptop. Comparedto3Ds max software,Lumionmightonlyhave simple functions,butit
was alsoeasiertobe masteredandlearned.Iusedtocome outwithhorrible rendering,butafterthis,Imanagedto
have properrenderingswhichwere farmuchbetterthanbefore. Ithelped me togainmore confidentinrendering
afterwards. Due tothe heavyworkof the educationdesign,Ionlyhadone more coloringjobtodo in these fewweeks,
whichare the Precint15 Coloring.Itwasa simple taskasall I neededtodowasputtingcolorintothe respectivespace.

8. Week7 to Week8
Project:Guard House 3D, Semi D Façade Revision, Precinct17 SetiaAlam
From week7to week8, I was incharge of a Guard House 3D, Semi D Façade RevisionandAdvanceconWarehouse 3D.
The guard house wasa simple buildingbutittookme few days to make a perfect3D model.The renderingguyhas
finallyapprovedmyworkandhe toldme to seekforhishelpwheneverIhadtrouble withSkecthup3D. At the same
time,Iwas toldto designafaçade on a semi d. The designneedstobe modernlike usual withthe attentiontobe caught
inthe cornersidesof the buildings. Itwasnotan easytask as I didn’tdomuch façade designthere. Andalso,if there
were some changesinthe 3D insketchup,itwoulddirectlyaffectthe 2D drawinginautocadas well.So, Ihad to make
some alignmentonbothsidesaswell.Finally,Iwasrequired designthe terrace house façade (Precinct17 SetiaAlam)
fromthe autocad.It wasmuch complicatedcomparedtothe previous facade project,asithadso much detailsandparts
that made me confusedsometimes. Imade lotsof changescomparedto the guard house project. Itwasquite a busy
weekasthiswas myfinal weekandI neededtofinishthe projectontime.

Conclusion
The internshipinN.Kangcompanyhas taughtme lotsof lessonsandskillsindesigns.Withoutit,Iwoulddefinitelynot
manage to use mostof the designsoftware bymyself.Workingisfarmuchdifferent comparedtouniversitylifeasmost
of the projectswere quickandrushing.Those whomasteredthe software anddesignskillswouldmostprobablysurvive
inthisfield.
