3.0 Training Program
3.1 Training Program Schedule
There is no actual training schedule from the company during interning. However,
we are expected to ask for any tasks that require us to be completed and manipulate
our time to multitask and complete them in time. From the beginning till the end of the
practice, I was given to be under the supervision of the senior architect, Ms Pua Shih
Shing. I was able to help other senior architects too which are Ms Intan and Ms Chai
Yee Lyn. There are few main projects during my internship which are the Terrace House,
5. 5
Eco Forest which is located at Broga, Hulu Langat and the The Publiq which is located
at Taman Molek, Johor Bahru. In addition, I also worked with other stuffs for a few
projects such as Estuary, Puteri Harbour and Edusentral – Segi, Setia Alam.
3.2 Projects

AutoCAD drafting amendments
Figure 1.1 Eco Forest Terrace House – Precinct 1
During my 2 months of internship training, I started off my first project with Eco Forest
terrace house – Precinct 1 which is located in Broga, Hulu Langat. Ms Pua assigned me and my
colleague, Coco, who is one of my classmates to colour the floor plans, elevations and sections
of building plan using Autocad. Basically, it’s just a kick start to let me get to know the working
scheme. A lot of mistakes were made and I had to seek for help from my colleagues. With their
assistance, I was able to accomplish my job on time. I’m very grateful to my colleagues for
lending me hands. Coco and I had been amending the colourings of the BP throughout the 2
months of interning as the clients keep changing their requirements. It really makes me realised
that the working environment is very different from the school environment. Besides, I also learnt
the importance of colouring using Autocad as it plays an important role to indicate different
building materials at different spaces.

In this project, Ms Pua asked me to design a pavilion at the lakeside which is
located right beside the Eco Forest Terrace House – Precinct 1. I had been
brainstorming and have lots of discussions with Ms Pua and my colleagues in order to
accomplish this project. I also used few days to produce 3D mocked up models using
Sketchup. At the end, I’m on top of the world and feel proud when Ms Pua told me that
my design proposal is favored by the client. My hard work had finally paid off!

3.2.3 Puteri Harbour, the Estuari Project
Overview
Site Location: Johor Bahru
Specification: Semi D Terrace House
Supervisor: Ms Pua Shih Shing
Task: AutoCAD drafting amendments, Produce elevations using floor plans given, 3D
model using Sketchup
The Estuari project is the first project that I learn how to use Sketchup 3D software.
I feel very thankful that my supervisor gave me an opportunity to learn to use Sketchup
software and handle the façade design for the Semi D terrace hose. The floor plans
had already done by the draftsmen, but producing different elevations of the Semi D
was part of my work. I often asked my colleagues and watch some Youtube tutorial
videos to master the Sketchup software. For the façade design, apart from aesthetic
value, we also need to consider the rainwater penetration, sunlight and ventilation
throughout the building.

Figure 1.17 The Publiq, Taman Molek, Johor Bahru.
In this project, I was assigned to design a roof deck which is located at the third
floor level of the shopping mall of The Publiq. My design intention is to create green
space on roof top which might aid visitors, residents and staff to get away from the
hustle and bustle city life. It allows public to enjoy greeneries and different views of the
site which provides different yet subtle experience. I found that this design project is a
way different from what I learnt in university as I need to think of how to distribute tenant
and developer spaces. I had to fulfill clients’ requirements and thoughts and most
importantly, help them save cost. Ms Intan always reminds me, ‘Welcome to
reality’. Overall, it’s a totally different experience for me and I get to know more
familiar on how an architect works in reality. Lastly, I would like to thank my partner,
Coco, for lending me her hands in this project.

Task: Produce 3D model using floor plans and elevations given in Sketchup
In this project, I was assigned to produce 240 retailed units 3D model in Sketchup
for the shopping mall of The Publiq for the presentation purpose. As it is said, ‘practice
makes perfect’, as I often exposed to the Sketchup software during my intern period,
now I found that I’m able to use it more efficiently and faster!

3.2.7 The Publiq Facilties Deck
Overview
Site Location: Taman Molek, Johor Bahru
Specification: Facilities Deck for Residential Block
Supervisor: Ms Intan Syazrena Md. Amin
Task: Produce design proposals and sketches for facilities deck, Prepare presentation
slides, Verbal presentation
The last task I received was to design a facilities deck for the residential block of
The Publiq. For my proposal, I proposed quite a lot of communal spaces such as
swimming pool, playground, outdoor gym and many more as I tend to interlink the
residential block and the commercial block and to allow public to sports, relax and eat.
It was fun and interesting! Unfortunately, my superiors distributed this design work to me
during the last week of my intern. Although I’m able to produce sketches, presentation
slides and having verbal presentation with them, I’m unable to finish the proposal using
AutoCAD and Sketchup software. However, my superiors did say that they will continue
develop my proposal after I left the company and this kind of satisfaction was just too
awesome!

3.3 Consultant Meetings, Client Meetings, Site Visits & Local Authority Submission
During the last week of my internship training, I was given the opportunity to go
on a construction site visit with my supervisor, Ms Pua. The site visit project is the Eco
Forest Terrace House – Precinct 1, located at Broga, Hulu Langat which is one of the
projects that I had been handling throughout the internship training. The terrace show
houses are still undergoing construction and are estimated to be completed either by
this year or next year. During the site visit, I was privileged to be able to attend the site
meetings with the architects, engineers and consultants at the Eco Majestic Gallery,
located at Semenyih. After the site meetings, feedbacks are noted from the client to be
changed for the next meeting. This meeting reminds me of how a construction project
has related to various professionals from different fields. Design ideas may have
proposed by architects from the beginning of the project, but other consultants are
important to be here as well not only to provide solution for each encounters but also to
ensure the project is planned and worked within the schedule. Teamwork is always the
key of success to make everything happens.
Apart from that, I have the opportunity to visit local authority which is Majlis
Bandaraya Shah Alam (MBSA) during my internship training. From the local authority
submission, I get to know how the submission works and the method to handle those
documentations in a proper way. As for Building Plan (BP) submission, it requires a key
plan, location plan, site plan, all floor plans, 4 elevations, 2 sections, sanitary and
plumbing layout plan and diagrammatic layout. Besides, my supervisor also brought me
to client’s company which is HCK Capital Group, located in Petaling Jaya to get the
documentation signed. These are some important knowledge I have not learn and
experience in my study life and might be useful in future.

4.0 Conclusion
In a nutshell, 8 weeks are really too short for us to get into architecture world. Two
months is such a short period for me to work in an architectural firm as I feel that I can
learn more if I stay longer in such a friendly and healthy company having my internship
program. Although this is my first working experience to involve in real life of
architecture, I have acquired knowledge from wide range of field and it makes me to
appreciate the efforts behind each single piece of projects. From the Architect, the
Project Manager until the Draftsmen, everyone plays an important role as a team to
fulfill and achieve the tasks given right before the deadline. These priceless experiences
will definitely help me a lot in my future career development. I feel very grateful to have
chances to gain different knowledge from every new task. Besides, I found that the
design jobs is the most challenging experience during my internship training as it
requires a lot of brainstorming, criticizing sessions with superiors but I indeed enjoyed the
process of it. The feeling of satisfaction is just awesome!
Last but not least, I would like to take this opportunity to thank my supervisor, Ms
Pua, and also my friendly colleagues for supervising me throughout these 8 weeks of
internship. They are willing to help me when I’m in hot water and also sharing their
knowledge to me. I get to know more familiar on how an architect works in reality.
Overall, it’s an unforgettable and awesome experience for me! Thanks!
