3. Introduction to the AttackIntroduction to the Attack
The 2008 Mumbai attacks (also referred to as 26/11) were
a group of terrorist attacks that took place in November
2008, when 10 members of Lashkar-e-Taiba, an Islamic
terrorist organisation based in Pakistan, carried out a
series of 12 coordinated shooting and bombing attacks
lasting four days across Mumbai. The attacks, which
drew widespread global condemnation, began on
Wednesday, 26 November and lasted until Saturday, 29
November 2008. 164 people died and 308 were wounded.

6. Hotel Taj Attack
26 November 2008
• The attack started at 9:38 pm.
• Two of the four attackers reached the main
entrance
• Planted a crude RDX Bomb.
• With AK 47s they started firing at each and
everyone in their sight.
7. • The other two terrorists, entered through the La-Pat
door of the Palace and started shooting down guests
in the poolside area.
• By midnight Mumbai Police surrounded the Taj.
Many of the guests inside the hotel were huddled up
by the staff into small rooms by this time.
• The army and firemen arrived at the location.
• Two groups were formed by marine commandos. The
first group was out safely. The second group was
spotted by the terrorists while they were making an
exit.

• A team of 200 commandos reached Mumbai
from New Delhi and took charge of the rescue
operations in Taj.
• Fresh round of gun battle reported from
within the building.
• The terrorists set fire to a room on the fourth
floor of the building
9. 28 November 2008
• Ten grenade explosions reported to have
taken place within the premises.
• Another round of explosions and firing took
place.
10. 29 November 2008
• 8:00 am :-The Indian commandos announced
that the Taj had been cleared of all the
terrorists.
• While the NSG and medical teams sanitised
the building after complete evacuation, the fire
department was still dousing the last fires in
the building.
11. NSG raid
(Operation Black Tornado)
• During the attacks, both hotels were surrounded by
Rapid Action Force personnel and Marine
Commandos (MARCOS) and National Security
Guards (NSG) commandos.
• Security forces stormed both hotels, and all nine
attackers were killed by the morning of 29
November.
• Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan of the NSG was
killed during the rescue of Commando Sunil Yadav,
who was hit in the leg by a bullet during the rescue
operations at Taj.

13. • .The final operation at the Taj Palace hotel was
completed by the NSG commandos at 08:00
on 29 November, killing three attackers and
resulting in the conclusion of the attacks.
• They rescued 300 people from The Taj Mahal
Hotel.
14. Effects of the Attack
• In the aftermath of the 2008 Mumbai attacks,
there were multiple and far-ranging events that
were observed. Besides the immediate impact
on the victims and their families, the attacks
caused widespread anger among the Indian
public , and condemnations from countries
throughout the world. The immediate impact
was felt on Maharashtra state, and throughout
urban India.

• The project of Taj Reconstruction took 21
months to asses and restore damage, and cost
more than $38 million in repairs, an amount
which the hotel says it more than lost in
business while closed down for reconstruction.

• Arms purchase has increased in India, not only
in Maharashtra but by the central government
and army too.

between police and vulnerable private sector
targets.
