Overall Goal of Lesson: The students will be able to identify four different emotions (happy, sad, angry,
and scared) and complete a matching worksheet.
Instructional Objectives: The students will actively listen as the teacher reads Today I Feel Silly & Other
Moods That Make My Day. The students will identify the four emotions of happy, sad, angry, and scared.
The student will match emotions on their worksheet. The students will create their own Jack O Lantern
with an emotion of their choice.

know that reading moves from top to bottomand left to right
110.11(b)(1G): identify different parts of a book (e.g., front and back
covers,title page)
Key Vocabulary: Emotions, happy, sad, angry,
scared.

Listening as a book is read, independent/guided practice worksheet,independent/guided practice group work

Anticipatory Activity for Lesson:
The teacher will read the book Today I Feel Silly & Other
Moods That Make My Day to the children. The students
will sit at their seats and actively listen as the teacher reads.
Time Allotted
20-25 mins.
Teacher Input/Lesson Activity:
After the teacher reads the book to the students she will introduce the four emotions the
students will be learning about and all the students will show their version of each emotion
using their own faces. Next the teacher will put on the short song Can You Make A Happy
Face? Then, the teacher will go to the website onlinepumpkincarving.com, create a jack o
lantern of each emotion while the kids guess the emotion. The teacher will then model an
emotion matching worksheet with the students. After that the students will get the worksheet
to complete themselves/with the help of a teacher.
Modeling:
The teacher will model the independent/guided practice matching worksheet with the
students.
Guided Practice:
Independent Practice: After the teacher models the worksheet the students will each get their
own to complete while the teacher and the paraprofessionals help any students who need it.
Lesson Closure:
The students will get to create their own felt pumpkin with the emotion of their choice.
Assessment Methods/Strategies: The teacher will observe and check for understanding
while the students complete their independent worksheet.
Resources (supplies, equipment, software, etc.):
Today I Feel Silly & Other Moods That Make My Day book, youtube video can you make a happy face
song by super simple songs, onlinepumpkincarving.com website, matching worksheet, felt pumpkin
materials, glue, and pen.
Reflection: This lesson will be mostly whole group with a lot of guided instruction, prompting, and
positive reinforcement from the teacher. Some redirection may be needed. The lesson will be very hands-
on and interactive to keep student engagement high.
