3. Before you peel, they have to buy…
First impressions are crucial to your success, so take
the time to impress your reader.
An introduction should include:
Hook ( capture your reader’s interest, stand out!)
Background on Topic (not much, but enough to prove
you know what you are talking about, just don’t be
boring!)
Thesis statement (what you are proving or explaining)
That is it! Nothing else! Your essay is so short there is
no need to tell them what they’ll finish in two minutes!
Really! Trust me on this!
4. Some Hook Options
Question: Would you trust someone who…
Command: Look up at night in the city and try to
count the stars. You will likely realize that light…
Quote: “My heart grew sick-on account of the damp”
Fact: “The Raven” only earned Poe $14.00.
Statistic: Over seven million Americans are vegetarian.
Anecdote: The only time I was truly terrified was when..
The trick is to be clever. Remember, your reader reads
hundreds of essays about the same thing hour after
hour very, very quickly, and you have to stand out by
doing something smart & unique to impress him or her.
Show that you can think outside of the box or know
something really rare.
5. The Thesis Statement
This is the single most important part of your entire
essay. Without a thesis statement, there is no
essay. So make sure it is perfect. It either your
side of the argument or what you are explaining,
depending on the type of essay you are writing.
You don’t need to include any of the points you
are making (that is what the body paragraphs are
for), you just need a nice, clean, simple sentence
that you support throughout your essay.
6. The art of PEELING!!!
P E E L
Point Evidence Explanation Link
Make a clear
and relevant
point.
Back it up!: Support your
point with examples or
evidence from the text.
Use quotes or events
from the text.
Explain your point
and how the
evidence or
examples supports
your point.
Link this point to the
following point in
the next paragraph,
as well as the essay
question.
PEEL is a strategy you can use to help not only outline
your essay paragraphs but give your reader an easy
way to follow your essay.
7. CONCLUSION
The conclusion brings closure to the reader,
summing up your points, providing a final
perspective on your topic, making an intensified
insight or making a call to action.
Without being redundant, remind the reader of
your thesis and main points(being careful not to
restate them exactly).
Return to your hook; this proves you know how to
write, which is what your reader wants to know.
Never add new information! This is not the place
to mention something that you did not write about
in the essay; it shows a lack of organization.
8. Remember, a good essay is
ALWAYS:
Focused: The essay gets straight to the point and utilizes clear
arguments. The writing doesn't deviate from the topic.
Organized: The most successful writers don't make up the essay as
they go along. They consider the structure and the order in which
they will present their points before they start to write.
Supported: Good essays include points that can be supported by
facts or by evidence from the text that is being analyzed.
Clear and Articulate: Good essays use proper grammar, spelling and
punctuation. We think MUCH faster than we write, so PLEASE read
what you write at least twice to catch your mistakes, we all make
them sometimes!
