And do not turn your face away from people in
contempt, nor go about in the land exulting
overmuch; surely Allah does not love any self-
conceited boaster;
4. Words Meanings
تصعري A specific sickness which affects camels in which their
neck remains straight and it cannot bend.
مرح A specific type of happiness which a person feels
when he gets wealth or status in society.
ُمتال One who simply THINKS or FEELS he is better than
others .
فخور To boast or show-off

“Research shows that the nonverbal
expression of pride conveys a
message that is automatically
perceived by others about a person’s
high social status in a group.”
7. Humbleness and Humility
1. In a gathering, new comers had no idea he was the Prophet.
2. He would take part in gathering fire wood when he travelled with his companions
to help prepare the food.
3. If he saw people sitting on the ground and not on a rug, he would take his cloak
off and give it to them to sit on.
4. When Imam as-Sadiq wanted to us the public bath, he would let others know
that they don’t have to clear out and empty it for him.
5. Imam al-Ridha would ensure that everyone (free or slave) ate together.
6. Imam al-Ridha scrubbed someone’s back – that individual did not know he was
the Imam!

Imam Ali b. Abi Talib, peace be upon him, has said: “There is not a
solitary proud person who shows (his) pride or an oppressive person
who exhibits (his) oppressiveness except that he finds some short-
coming in his own self (which he needs to compensate for through his
actions of arrogance or oppression).”

Lessons to Learn from Verse 18
1. Interact with everyone – Muslim or not – with respect. ( رّعالتصكّدخاسّنلل )
2. It is forbidden to have pride – even in the way one walks. ( التمشفى
االرضمرحا )
3. We should never fall victim to long-winded dreams and aspirations in our
lives. (ختالُم)
4. Never act with pride amongst the people. ( ّّناّّللاّّبالیحّّلكختالُمخورَف )
