2. The Russian Revolution
A catch all term for a series of revolutions in Russia from 1917
February – The monarchy is ousted, the Provisional Government takes over,
republican in nature
October – The Bolsheviks seize power from the Provisional Government,
communists now in power.
March 1918 – The Russians sign the ‘Treaty of Brest-Litovsk’ with Germany
and leave the war
From October 1917- 1922- The Russian Civil War rages between ‘Red’
communist forces and ‘White’ anti-communists

5. 40,000 British troops deployed to Russia to oppose the communists
Troops remained in Russia till 1920
Churchill: ‘Bolshevism must be strangled in its cradle’
Despite forces being withdrawn he arranged for arms to be sent to
Poland to aid their invasion of the Ukraine
However, dock workers in London, sympathetic to the
Bolsheviks refused to load ships bound for Poland
