2. THE SPARK
The 28th June 1914, the Archiduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was
visiting Sarajevo and a student, Gravillo Princip, shot him and his wife
with a handgun, killing them both.
After a few weeks, in the summer of 1914, almost all of Europe fell into
the largest armed conflict in history, which also involved major non-
European powers. The First World War changed all of our continents.
3. THE ALLIANCES
• During the World War, Europe was divided into two alliances.
• The first alliance was formed by: Italy, Germany and Austria. This was
called the Triple Alliance.
• The second alliance was formed by: France, Britain and Russia. This
was called the Triple Entente.
4. THE POLITICAL , MILITARY AND CULTURAL CAUSES
The main causes were the political, cultural and military ones.
The military and political causes were the revenge that the French desired
against Germany to recover the LORENA and ALSAZIA.
There were also cultural phenomena that helped the war blow up and aggressive
nationalism trasformed the <LOVE OF THE COUNTRY> into imperialistic drive and
hatred of the stranger. They used the war to show that each nation was stronger.
5. ITALIAN NEUTRALITY
On 3rd August 1914 Italy proclaimed its neutrality.
The Triple Alliance was a defensive treaty, so each state had to
participate only if one of the allies were attacked. Austria
declared war on Serbia so Italy didn’t participate.
The catholics, socialists and many liberals were against the war
(for reasons of principle).
The majority of the Italian public did not want war.
6. ITALY’S ENTRY IN WAR
Italy entered the war in 1915.
Then Japan, Turkey and the United States entered the conflict.
Switzerland was the only one that never entered the conflict and
during this time (and still today) it had a very flourishing economy.
