In his 1st speech to the House of commons declares he has ‘nothing to offer
but blood, toil, tears and sweat
Creates office of Minister of Defence, so he now controls the war effort directly
2. Having been defeated in France the British and remaining allied forces beat a
hasty retreat to the coast
WSC dubbed the Battle of France ‘a colossal military disaster’
The British army stuck at Dunkirk in France is hastily evacuated
Between 27 May and 4 June the British army is removed
