Erotokritos is a 17th century epic Greek poem written by Vikentios Kornaros in Crete. It consists of over 10,000 fifteen-syllable rhyming verses and describes the love between Erotokritos and Aretousa. Around this central love story are themes of honor, friendship, bravery and courage. The traditional rhyming style used in Cretan folk songs called mantinades was also used. Erotokritos remains popular today when passages are publicly recited accompanied by music.
