William Shakespeare was born in 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. He had little formal education but taught himself several languages. He married Anne Hathaway and had three children but few details are known about his life from 1585 to 1592. In London, he found success as a playwright and part-owner of the Lord Chamberlain's Men theatre company. Shakespeare wrote 38 plays, 154 sonnets, and two long narrative poems. His plays have had a significant influence on English literature and culture. He died in 1616 at the age of 52.
