MARGINALIZATION (Different learners in Marginalized Group
Evaluation question 1
1. Evaluation – using and challenging conventions
Front Cover
Masthead: The masthead is large and bold in a friendly font telling the audience that they are
looking at Rogue Magazine. The font isn’t swaying too much towards one particular genre because
the magazine has crossover appeal and appeals to many different people who listen to different
music other than indie music like rock and roll and alternative music.
Header:the header on the magazine provides extra information at a glance so the audience are
attracted to the magazine when the see it on the newsstands.
Flash: the flash is in a bright colour and attracts the audience through this and also through the
information in the circle advertising a gig. This links in with the customer’s interest and hobbies of
going to gigs so it will attract them.
Date/Price/Barcode: these features are places in the conventional place and this will make the
audience comfortable and will enable them to concentrate on the more important things on the
page.
Anchor: The anchor on the front page is “finding fame and hanging with Haim”. This mentions a
current indie band drawing the audience in and giving them another reason to buy the magazine.
The quote shows that Violet Haze are cool indie musicians who hang around with other alternative
musicians and have a good role in the industry making them popular.
Contents Page
Band Index: the band index on the contents page is another feature that draws the audience in and
makes them interested throughout the magazine. It takes up a lot of space suggesting its importance
on the page. It is also a convention of indie magazine; this feature is seen monthly in the NME
Magazine.
2. Contents: The main feature on this page is the list of all the different articles on the page which let
the audience know straight away and clearly what else is on the front cover. A lot of this information
is also a repetition of what the audience have already read on the front cover so it is confirming this
information and reminding them of what they saw only two minutes ago which is a psychological
method.
Subscription Box: the box is audience grabbing and is the only part on the page which is block colour
making it stand out and telling the audience that it is something different. It is a good way of making
money for the magazine company and an easy way for the customers to subscribe to their favourite
magazine.
Double Page Spread
Clothing: the clothing worn be the models on all of the pages is simple and straight to the point.
Pastel colours and jeans are used and they are item that are usually worn by indie musicians and
fans.
Action: both of the girls are acting very mysteriously which conforms to the stereotype of indie, you
don’t quite know what’s coming next. They have plain expressions and are standing/sitting casually
showing their laid-back approach to life.
Background: the background is also plain letting the readers/audience focus on the article and main
writing on the magazine. This is a usual backdrop for an indie music album cover or a backdrop at an
indie music set so it show the consistency throughout the genre.
Introduction: the introduction on the DPS gives us background information telling us about the
artists and drawing people who don’t know anything about these people in the magazine, attracting
a wider audience.
Arocap: The arrocap tells the audience that the article is here. The article is structured in a ¾ column
structure which is conventional for this genre, conforming to the conventions and providing
something that the audience will know well.
