Outdoor	First	Aid	Training
Institute	for	Outdoor	Learning	Statement	of	Good	Practice
Reason	For	The	Statement:
An	appropriate	level	of	First	Aid	Competence	is	an	essential	part	of	operating	as	an
outdoor	learning	practitioner.	The	Institute	for	Outdoor	Learning	recognises	and
supports	the	provision	of	Outdoor	First	Aid	training	that	is	delivered	at	the	appropriate
level,	by	trainers	with	outdoor	knowledge	and	assessed	in	a	fair	and	relevant	way.
This	Statement	of	Good	Practice	is	designed	to	support	the	maintenance	and
development	of	standards	in	Outdoor	First	Aid	training	and	assessment.	It	supports:
1. Organisations	making	their	own	assessment	of	“adequate	and	appropriate
equipment,	facilities	and	personnel”	to	ensure	the	people	in	their	care	receive
immediate	attention	if	they	are	injured	or	taken	ill.
2. Practitioners	of	Outdoor	Learning	(instructors,	teachers,	trainers,	coaches,
etc.)	in	identifying	appropriate	First	Aid	training	to	match	their	area	of	practice.
3. First	Aid	Training	Providers,	National	Governing	Bodies	of	sport	and	First
Aid	Awarding	Bodies	when	considering	the	content	of	First	Aid	training
courses	specifically	for	outdoor	practitioners.
Alignment	with	the	IOL	Statement	of	Good	Practice:
Aligning	with	the	IOL	Statement	of	Good	Practice	is	on	a	voluntary	basis.	The	Institute
encourages:
• Providers	of	First	Aid	Training	to	self	declare	that	their	course	content	and
delivery	is	aligned	with	the	relevant	band	described	in	this	statement
• Employers,	National	Governing	Bodies	of	sport,	and	other	interested
parties	to	refer	to	the	bands	described	in	this	statement	where	it	simplifies	the
definition	of	a	required	level	of	First	Aid	Competence.
Providers	can	also,	should	they	wish,	apply	to	have	a	particular	course	accredited	by
IOL	in	order	to	demonstrate	their	course	is	relevant	to	outdoor	leaders	and	assure
others	the	course	includes	a	clear	aim,	learning	outcomes,	assessment	for	learning	and
knowledgeable	trainers.
2

IOL	Statement	of	Good	Practice:
The	statement	recognises	four	bands	of	Outdoor	First	Aid	(OFA)	training.	Each	band
recognises	a	different	set	of	competencies	for	First	Aid	in	an	Outdoor	Learning	context.
1. Each	band	describes	a	minimum	expected	course	content	and	delivery	structure.
They	are	not	absolute	statements	of	course	content	-	training	providers	may
well	include	additional	topics	to	those	mentioned	at	their	own	discretion	or	to
meet	the	needs	of	their	customers.
2. The	skills	and	knowledge	must	be	taught	and	assessed	in	accordance	with
currently	accepted	first	aid	practice	in	the	United	Kingdom	as	described	by	the
Resuscitation	Council	(UK)	and	in	other	publications	or	sources	(e.g.	Voluntary
Aid	Societies,	Royal	Life	Saving	Society,	Mountain	Rescue,	etc.)	provided	that
they	are	supported	by	a	responsible	body	of	medical	opinion.
3. Outdoor	First	Aid	Training	providers	should	be	able	demonstrate	how	they
satisfy	all	the	relevant	HSE	First	Aid	criteria,	including	those	for	selecting	a	first
aid	training	provider.	Training	providers	should	also	meet	the	requirements	of
“Principles	of	Assessment	for	First	Aid	Qualifications”	(Skills	for	Health).
4. Trainers	are	encouraged	to	complete	the	IOL	Outdoor	First	Aid	Trainers
Questionnaire	online	assessment	tool	to	test	and	evidence	relevant	knowledge
of	first	aid	provision	in	the	outdoors.
