The book Celia, A Slave by Melton A. McLaurin is about the trial and execution of a slave in
Callaway county named Celia. Robert migrated westward to seek cheap land. He was a widow and
had two sons and two daughters who still lived with him. In 1850 a Missouri farmer named Robert
Newsom buys a teenaged slave named Celia. At the time Robert purchased Celia there was an
intense debate about slavery throughout America. After buying Celia Newsom raped her on the way
to his farm. He would rape her for the next five years she was his slave. Within the five years on the
farm Celia has two children for Newsom. Celia becomes involved with another slave on the farm
named George. Once George finds out about Celia and her masters relationship he gives her an
ultimatum telling her if she doesn't end it he'll leave her. While pregnant with her third child Celia
tells Newsom's daughters about their father telling them to tell him to back off because she's very
sick. When Newsom didn't listen to Celia she struck him with a pole and burned his body in her
fireplace. When the family found out she was convicted and hanged.
Melton A. McLaurin is a professor emeritus history professor at the University of North Carolina at
Wilmington. He was interested in race relations since the seventh grade while working at his

February 7, 1945 Thomas Whitecotton a former Captain with the Missouri Highway Patrol,
accepted the position of Warden of the Missouri State Penitentiary. His mission? "clean up" the
penitentiary.
A year later, Missouri formed the Department of Corrections. Whitecotton, became its new Director.
Together with Missouri Governor Phil Donnelly, the two set out to take control of Missouri's
prisons.
Prisoners at MSP rioted in September of 1954. The Missouri Highway Patrol and local law
enforcement entered the prison to quell the riot, before all the buildings were burnt to the ground.

Louis Globe–Democrat writer, in the 1960's, states that he took it upon himself to write about the
"appalling Conditions" at the Missouri prison. According to Buchanan, he received several
complaints from former inmates at the prison. He decided to investigate the allegations.
In July of 1963, along with Warden Nash and 15 witness's, Patrick Buchanan watched the execution
of convict Sammy Aire Tucker. A man who had a killed a police officer during a robbery.
Wearing a black blindfold, shorts and shoes, Tucker uttered his last words, "Thanks for everything.".
The scene horrified Buchanan. A scene Warden Nash, had saw four times.
February of 1964 brought more criticisms to the penitentiary. In a study done by Myrl Alexander,
Director of the Southern Illinois University Center, he stated in a 15 page report, that there were
"many" problems at the penitentiary.
The report blamed Warden Nash and his officers. Officers who received a mere $262 per month,
were said to be under trained, and too old for the job. The study reported 490 acts of violence in a
30–month period. Warden Nash attempted to compromise, stating that he would use more
communication skills and come down harder on his staff.
In the summer of 1964, Warden Nash attempted to integrate black inmates with white inmates. June
9th, several white inmates jumped 11 black inmates on their way back to their bunks. The whites
wore pillow cases over their heads to hide their identity.

The Hyatt Regency Hotel, the newest hotel built in Kansas City Missouri featuring an open atrium
design at its entrance with floating walkways suspended on the second, third, and fourth floors. Only
one year after its final construction did a suspended walkway fall, injuring and killing partygoers the
night of July 17th, 1981. What may have initially appeared as an accident was the result of many
factors including the design and construction of the walkways supports, but more importantly
communication between all involved parties in its design and construction. Ethical concerns over
this tragedy were raised as well as further investigation of possible negligence resulting in the deaths
and injuries.
The original walkway was designed to have single load bearing rods that would pass through the
fourth floor walkways supporting beams, be supported with nuts and washers and hang the second
floor walkway beneath as shown in the "Original Detail" in figure 1 . Due to a late design change for
apparent manufacturing issues, the change was quickly implemented to the "As Built" design shown
in Figure 1.

Hart Benton Section 3 Summary
In this paper we will be discussing a mural by Thomas Hart Benton titled, A Social History of the
State of Missouri. This mural is located in the Missouri state capitol in Jefferson City Missouri. This
mural is located in the House Lounge of the capitol building. The mural covers 3 of the walls with
the exception of the West wall full of windows. The room measured 25 feet wide, 55 feet long, and
14feet 2 inches high. Benton used egg tempera for the mural and beeswax and varnish to protect it.
In 1935, House Bill 536, Section 87B became law, appropriating $16,000 for Benton to paint a
mural in the House Lounge of the Missouri State Capitol. The mural was completed in 1936.

painted corn stalks, railroad lines, electrical line towers, and smoke from the train between the
windows. As you walk to the right you are facing the North wall it showcases Missouri's early

smaller ones. In the first large panel to the left of the door you see an Indian trading with a white

One of the many disadvantages of being a game warden is everyone that you meet has a firearm on
them and you might be the only other warden working in a set zone. Also working in all sorts of
weather conditions, dangerous wildlife, and lower salaries compared to other LEOs.(8) Wardens will

facing the consequences for venturing into the unknown. George Shannon and Lucius come face to

comestible sustenance or Lucius being faced with the seemingly immoral task to murder a woman

On the 23 of September 2017 around 7:30pm I went and saw Tim McGraw and Faith Hill preform
their Soul 2 Soul tour at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Missouri. I have never seen either of the

been a fan of country music and growing up in a family who has always been fans of this genera of

It seemed at the start of the show they sang songs that where at the start of their music careers and
progressed through their career. They sang each song as a duet no matter if it was a Tim or Faith
song. My favorite song of the night was Tim's "Stay Humble and Kind" and Faith's "I need you",
which was an encore song. During the encore everyone thought that the show was over, but Tim
came out into the Stadium seat and Faith walked through the floor seats and they sang. The special
effects added even more to the experience. I would go back and see the same exact show if I had the

crowd that you would imagine at a summer concert that this was. People where up and singing and
dancing to the music and where having an overall good time listening to the music. The crowd
ranged from little kids to adults, but everyone was almost in unison with the music, it's a weird thing
to experience. From where my family where sitting we did not see that much alcohol being drank
and even less intoxicated people. With this you could really enjoy the show without having to deal
with annoying drunk fans. If you accidently bump into someone they where respectful and
apologized. You could talk to your family and Tim and Faith would encourage you to sing along to
the music by stopping mid song and you would sing without them.

It is believed that the death of Ellison Hatfield was the turning point between these families and the
physical start of the 30 year long feud. Ellison Hatfield, the brother of Devil Anse Hatfield, was a
farmer and former Lieutenant who served on the Confederate side during the Civil War. His death
was caused by a verbal argument between three McCoy's during a voting day in Kentucky; Preacher

Lake Pollution Issues
The issue regarding the Lake of the Ozarks is one that has been floating around for some time. The
water quality has gone down the drain in recent years due to numerous factors such as leaking
sewage and trash pollution. This issue is an environmental concern because it makes the escherichia
coli (e. coli) levels in the water go up, which can lead to illnesses and deaths of people and animals
across the area. There was said to have been as much as 15,000 gallons of sewage that led directly
into the Lake of the Ozarks (DNR). This is obviously a problem because it is affecting the health of
everyone and everything; however, people are asking why it may matter.
Many people care about their lake. It's where they can go to swim and hang out with friends.
Residents care about the pollution issue that is going on because more and more people are deciding
to live by the lake full time which increases lake pollution. Another aspect that is being affected with

The American Dream Of The Poer V, Volar, By Langston Hughes
The short story Volar by Judith Ortiz Cofer, and the poem Harlem by Langston Hughes share a
common theme which is the elusive American dream, thus, compared to a pot of gold for migrants.
There are several ideas that pertain to elusive American dream of both the short story and the poem.
First, in Volar, a family migrated from Puerto Rico to New Jersey to seek opportunities and better
life conditions. Similarly, in Harlem, it speaks about African–Americans who migrated from the
South to the North for better working conditions. Secondly, in Volar, the reality of how hard to attain
the American dream is evident as the story described the living conditions in their tiny apartment. In
a like manner, the poem Harlem expresses the devastation in the truth that American dream of
African–Americans is unattainable. Lastly, both the short story and the poem have a message of
hardship contrary to their expectations once settled in the place of what they thought to be the end of
the rainbow. Furthermore, some similarities and differences of figurative languages are used in both

Graduation Speech : Higher Education
Higher education is an ever–changing and evolving field that comes with its own set of
responsibilities ranging from professors teaching about learning methods to the staff that look after
student well–being. Since there is such a vast set of responsibilities though comes a fair number of
issues and policies to adhere to. With that in mind, the series of documents that were assigned for
reading helped to put some things in perspective for me when it comes to this field. The documents
that we had looked at were the 2014 Strategic Plan for Southeast Missouri State University
(Southeast or SEMO), "Top 10 Higher Education State Policy Issues for 2012" by the American
Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU), a list of the fifteen roles of higher
education that the class had decided on, and a .pdf of flow charts created, one from each student,
using the aforementioned roles. These documents were interesting to read and I believe that each of
them helped me to find a new outlook on what it is that I want to do in this field. As previously
mentioned, each of these documents helped to show me a new perspective and also showed me the
challenges that are being faced at today's universities. Starting with the AASCU's paper on policy
issues, it was nice to see the critical issues that are public universities are facing. When looking at

August 27, 2015, is a day that I will not likely forget anytime soon. On that day my girlfriend,

Kansas City Hyatt Collapse
An investigation into the design flaw of two floating balconies above the atrium of the Hyatt
Regency Hotel in Kansas City, Missouri, is discussed in this report. The following investigation
includes a closer look at disputes in design between the engineering consultants and the fabrication
company, as well as an examination of load capacity. In the design, three walkways were
intertwined between the second, third, and fourth floors above the hotel's atrium (Leyendecker, E.,
Marshall, R., Pfrang, E., & Woodward, K., 1982). The second floor's walkway was suspended from
the fourth, which was suspended from the roof. The third floor's walkway was hanging from the roof
of the atrium, independent to the other two. When a collapse occurred on July 17, 1981, the fourth
floor, which was suspended from the roof, collapsed and landed on top of the second floor. As a
result, both floors crashed into the atrium at ground–level (Leyendecker, E., Marshall, R., Pfrang,
E., & Woodward, K., 1982). The main causes of the collapse are questionable engineering ethics,

The Eye of the Needle
The Eye of the Needle was always an iconic place along the Missouri until May 1997 when it
collapsed under suspicious circumstances. On the expedition of Lewis and Clark, the White Cliffs of
Montana was a signature site described by Lewis. One of the extraordinary landmarks was the Eye
of the Needle, which Meriwether Lewis first described its scenery by comparing its magnificent
rock formations to "elegant ranges of lofting freestone buildings, having their parapets well stocked
with statuary" (Burns, 1997). This was 1800's talk, which doesn't make sense to most people
nowadays. Looking at an old picture of the Eye of the Needle that my grandfather took while rafting
the Missouri, I can see the beauty that people raved about.
The rock structure is so perplexing. The arch made up of multiple boulders doesn't look like
anything that nature could ever make naturally. It defies gravity standing on the very top of the rock
wall lining the rushing Missouri. The light grey structure has thousands of crevices that formed
themselves from natural wear–and–tear over time. 200 feet up, it towers over the Missouri River
keeping a watchful eye on all of the wildlife.

The Best Days Of My Life
I have lived in Columbia for all my life. I have lived in two different houses in a matter of fourteen
years. There are some days that I want to forget because I hated what I did that day, also, there are
some days in Columbia that I will never forget. For example, the day I moved was one of the best
days of my life because now I don't need to share a room with my brother. Also, seeing all the stuff
we have had in his garage that we have had for 14 years. When I was looking at all those stuff it

after school to tell the K–4 to stop running and to walk to the playground or the bus. Usually, after

things she does. She gets to see people at the hospital, which I got to do 1 time and the patient was
the nicest in the world. She gave me 10 dollars to buy food of my choice and I got a cheeseburger
and fries for lunch. Since my aunt and my mom work at the hospital usually after about 20 minutes I
would go over to my mom's office and go and finish my homework. Then I and my mom would go

As I grew up in a suburb of Missouri I was not very aware of the so called "boarder wars" that
Kansans and Missourians experienced. I became much more aware of the stereotypes that arose
from either sides of the Stateline once I entered high school. Still a Missouri resident I was not very
familiar with Kansas's culture, or even some of the main differences between the two States. Once
my family moved west of the Stateline I finally experienced hands on some of the main differences.

On 30 January 2011, the Missouri House of Representatives passed a bill and sent it to the senate
that would require drug testing for those receiving state Temporary Assistance for Needy Family
(TANF) funds. Funding from food stamps, medicare, and public housing would not be affected by
this bill (Keller – House). According to Columbia Tribune reporter Rudi Keller, the bill is very
similar to the Arizona law which is the only other state that tests welfare recipients. Missouri and
Arizona would use a questionare and interview which would determine which applicants to test. The
two states are also similar in their caseload of 45,017 people on assistance in Arizona and 42,885 in

According to Keller's article, the law would protect children. It would discourage parents from using
drugs which would create a better home environment. It would also ensure that state money would
be used for supporting families, not recreational drugs (Keller). Rep. John McCaherty said "The bill
will show the state expects TANF recipients to be responsible with public money." (Qtd. in Keller).
The idea behind those that support this legislation is that the state is responsible for ensureing that
taxpayer's money doesn't ultimately end up buying illegal substances and drug testing is an effective
means to ensure this. As with all political issues, there are those on the other side of the fence.
People oppose this legistlation for various reasons: from constitutionality to cost. According to a
study done by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), welfare recipients are no more likely to
use drugs. Furthermore, placing a requirement to be tested may place a stigma upon those receiving
welfare which would be counterproductive to their relief (Drug Testing). An editorial by Henry
Waters in the Columbia Daily Tribune, the bill is the government attempting to punish a class of
people who are presumed worthless (Waters). Another reason people oppose this legislation is the

Racism In Teens
The Power and Light District (PLD) of downtown Kansas City is the city's major entertainment
center. The growth of PLD and the four other entertainment districts (Zona Rosa, Country Club
Plaza, Westport, 18th and Vine Jazz District) resulted in greater choices for the community (AP,
2011); however, it additionally became a choice target for juvenile activity. Crowds of underage
youths flocking to entertainment districts have been a problem for years in Kansas City. In the past,
the prime destination was the Westport area near the Plaza, where the under–18 crowd sometimes
topped 1,000. Law enforcement reported seeing children as young as 7 walking through the area
well after midnight (AP, 2011). These youth were primarily Black which resulted in accusations of
racism; however, the merchants responded by stating that race was not the issue, but these unruly
youth were keeping paying customers away.
There were recent numerous complaints in these areas of youth harassing and intimidating patrons
in all entertainment districts. Mayor Sly James took these complaints seriously and sparked an

Individual Exhibit Evaluation : The Home Front Exhibit
Individual Exhibit Evaluation The home front exhibit portion highlighted Nodaway County and
Northwest's war efforts during World War I and II. This exhibit portion included a case and two
panels on the wooden board on the reverse side of the introduction portion. Within the exhibit
portion there are three large text panels, objects, object labels, an interactive and two title text
panels. The location of this portion worked well because the topic was not about a specifically about
the military like the other portions, so being off by itself worked. The layout was little confusing
because there was a case that was across from the wooden board, so everything was not together.
The case contained objects, a few small framed posters, object labels, a title panel and a large text
panel. The wooden board was home to the large posters, interactive, title panel, object labels and
two large text panel. The division of objects and posters, between the board and the case worked
well and caused less confusion with the layout.
The three large text panels contained QR codes on each, one that directed visitors to my main
website and another that took people to a video on wartime nutrition. They also contained
subsections of canning, victory gardens, agricultural support, Northwest's V–12 program and
Northwest's Junior Red Cross.
Within the subcategories, there was a picture for most that helped with the aesthetics. Over all the
