My Experience At The Coast Guard
One of my first experiences in the Coast Guard was a question that went out to the whole company, "Why do you want to be in the Coast Guard?"
Naturally my response was that I wanted to help people. Little did I know at the time, that as I progressed through my career, so too would the focus
of my desire to help shift to the people placed under my charge. Starting out I didn't place much thought into leadership. Luckily, I have had the
privilege to serve with several people that have demonstrated exceptional leadership throughout my career. Jeff Dorwart, John Lorentz, Marvin Wells,
etc., the list goes on. All of whom have imparted some of their leadership wisdom upon me, either through demonstration or conversation. Leadership to
me is the ability to influence others in the pursuit of a shared vision or goal, regardless of whether it is yours or one you yourself have been influenced
to follow.
2.For some of my leadership mentors, they modeled the way by their actions and personal interactions. Marvin Wells always maintained an outstanding
uniform. He usually had a smile on his face and presented himself as a very approachable individual. In fact, even when I was getting "corrected", it
didn 't feel like an ass chewing, rather a course correction that I ended up being harder on myself than what he was. Jeff Dorwart and John Lorentz
were both big picture thinkers. They would shamelessly share the big picture, direction and desired end result with all. This created buy–in and

The Extreme Reserve Commute
The extreme commute imposed on reservists is detrimental to both the member and the unit. Upon first entering into the Coast Guard Reserves,
members are placed at units that are within a reasonable commuting distance. By working and drilling close to their homes, reservists are able to easily
commute and actively participate in reserve drills and activities while still maintaining their busy schedules in their personal lives. When the Coast
Guard imposes a mandatory Permanent Change of Station of members when they advance, most times to locations outside of their reasonable
commuting distance, and at the members' financial expense, it creates unnecessary impacts for both the member and the Coast Guard. As reserve ...

This causes many members to choose to either not want to advance or to unwillingly choose to be placed in the IRR rather than accept orders. This is
a great loss to both the Coast Guard and the member. If members choose to depart, the Coast Guard now loses a valued member with training,
experience and subject matter expertise.
The Coast Guard has invested many hours of training and money in each Reserve member to try to ensure that members are educated and capable of
augmenting the Active component of the Coast Guard and respond to emergencies as needed. The main purpose of the Coast Guard Reservists is to
train to deploy. It would be time and cost effective to be able to do that close to the members home. The Coast Guard would benefit by retaining
members at their current duty location instead of transferring them upon advancing. At the Unit level, there would be a continuation of operations, for
the overall Coast Guard, the training and the money invested in preparing the member would not be wasted. Members would be would be happier and
continue to serve and be a productive member in the Coast

Importance Of Coast Guard
Security, maritime safety, and saving lives. These are the components of what the United States Coast Guard provides for America. The Coast Guard
is one of the five armed services in the United States and was the only force on the sea until the United States Department of the Navy came
along(USCG: A Multi–Mission Force). The Revenue Cutter Service, now known as the Coast Guard began in 1915 and its purpose since then is to
protect the United States, the environment, and to save lives at sea. The United States Coast Guard has an immense importance on the citizens of The
United States because they shield any kind of danger, is committed to keeping the environment safe and ideal, and making saving lives is a priority.
With this being said, the United States Coast Guard is the chief maritime guardian of the seas because they are dedicated to helping protect the
homeland, preserving the maritime environment, and addressing the variety of emergencies. First and foremost, the Coast Guard is able to delineate
the portrayal of chief maritime guardian by helping protect the homeland. The United States Coast Guard is able to do this at all times because they
serve under the U.S Department of Homeland Security as times of peace and complete tasks such as search and rescue, ice patrols, etc. At times of war
the United States Coast Guard can be with the United States Department of the Navy under the President's order and defend the nation against threats
and terrorism. For example, in

Leadership Vs Coast Guard
My definition of Leadership is similar to the Coast Guard's definition of Leadership, which is to influence others to achieve the same goal. The Coast
Guard's definition of leadership from the Leadership Development Framework COMDTINST M5351.3 is Leadership is the ability to influence others
to obtain their obedience, respect, confidence, and loyal cooperation. My previous leadership influences during my career were able to lead myself
and my shipmates by influencing us to accomplish many missions. The BMC Rick Barones and the MKCM Darcy Collins of the Coast Guard
influence their people with compassion and respect. They also lead with confidence and knowledge of their rates and craft, which made them worth
listening to.

Leadership Of The Coast Guard
1.Leadership in the Coast Guard is the process of guiding and inspiring others toward closer adherence to the core values of Honor, Respect, and
Devotion to Duty. Leadership is a set of behaviors rather than just a set of ideals. Ideals are good, but ideals without the corresponding behaviors are
useless. The best way to guide others is to show by example; a true leader not only speaks out in favor of the core values, but also exhibits them in their
daily life.
2.Although leadership traits can be studied from textbooks, the best way to adopt good leadership traits is to follow an example of positive
leadership. In my career, I've been very fortunate to have had numerous positive role models on which to model by own behavior after. ... Show more

Fortunately, another member (also just a non–rate fireman, also new to the unit), finally stepped forward and challenged the behavior of several more
senior members. Although the situation got tense for a few moments, the end result was that the lack of respect towards our struggling shipmate
ended. The courage of Fireman Neil C. had a profound impact on me. Not only did it put an end to the disrespectful behavior towards a shipmate, but
now, 24 years later, it still has an impact on me, as it provides me an example of how I should behave.
b.Later, at this same duty station, as a new EM3, I was anxious to prove myself as a competent electrician. However, during my first month on the job,
when installing a replacement pump motor, I carelessly wired it incorrectly, which resulted in the windings of the brand–new, extremely expensive
motor burning out approximately five minutes after I installed it. I was horrified by this turn of events. I immediately realized my wiring mistake,
but unfortunately I realized it about five minutes too late. I would have given anything to be able to turn back time by those five minutes so I could
correct my error. I was scared to death. I didn't know how to tell my supervisor. Our engineering warrant was extremely demanding, and had just
finished yelling at one of the MKs for accidently dropping a wrench into the bilge. I didn't know what

Coast Guard Marine Case Summary
1.Patrol Boats in the Coast Guard, specifically 87' Coastal Patrol Boats (CPB's) have remote geographic homeports which hinder adequate and
appropriate support levels. Modernization of our support functions has centralized our supply, administrative support and inspection teams to larger
ports. This centralization has caused time burdens on receiving parts, personnel support and maintenance assistance with our remotely located units.
District Eight 87' CPB's should be pooled with other CPB's and Coast Guard units to increase needed support and increase readiness. 2.The 87' CPB,
are in traditional home ports from there predecessor the 82'WPB. They are spread out throughout each sector in either a populated or remote area

Political detractors will be present in this process as they always are when moving an asset and its crew from a community and congressional
district. However the 87' CPB fleet is currently dealing with these issues in the bow to stern program every four years through the Operating
Facility Change Orders, OFCO, which are completed during the planning phase to notify congress and concerned parties. Additionally local critics
have brought up facts of longer response times to these remote areas in times of need. The truth is that these 87'CPB's rarely operate in these remote
areas. Rather, they operate in the larger ports transiting in some cases up to 5 hours to their operational area. In all cases involvement with the public
affairs office would have to happen very early in the process to ensure the proper message is developed. 6.District Eight currently has sixteen 87'
CPB's, nine are co–located in four different ports, and seven are in remote locations. The pooling process would determine which locations are
capable of supporting two 87' CPB's instead of one and shifting the cutter and crews to those ports. For instance the CGC PELICAN could move to
CG Station Grand Isle, LA. The CGC STURGEON is currently home ported in Grand Isle which would give a smaller span of control for the Sector

Coast Guard Memo
1.When I joined the Coast Guard 21 years ago, I would never have guessed I would be writing a memo based on my leadership philosophy. My first
two years and ten days in the Coast Guard was the most miserable I have ever been. I was one of two females at a Small Boat Station in Rockland,
Maine. My roommate and I were treated differently, to say the least. We were the only two mess cooks out of 20 non–rated personnel. Her and I would
switch every other month for more than one year. It took us twice as long as the men to get communication room and boat crew qualified. We had to
do colors only in the rain or snow. We were assigned Extra Military Instruction (EMI), like throwing heaving lines for hours on the pier, because we
were "weaker"... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Know what you don't know. I believe that as a leader, it's important to be okay with not knowing everything. Being honest about your knowledge base
and not pretending to be something you aren't, while it's humbling, brings the most respect. When I was a Company Commander, running my first
company, I was told – if they ask you a question that you don't know the answer to, just say "Get out of my face, I don't have time for that. Never
look like you don't know the answer". Of course, that is an extreme and unusual scenario. But, it's something that I think of often, and am careful to
not embody as a leader. Asking the "whys" and "what if's" in terms of policy and procedure provides you with the background and information you
need to make good decisions for your unit, your people and the future. It's especially important when reporting to a new unit, or taking a new

What is life after high school? Have you thought about what you want to do, whether it's college, work, or military? Well if you have thought about
the military route, so have I. The Coast Guard has many reasons as to why it could be the best branch of military for the future.
There are many reasons to join the Coast Guard, but the three best reasons are to help protect the marine ecosystems, go to college for free, and travel
around the world.
When you join the Coast Guard you have the opportunity to help clean and protect the marine ecosystems. We all know how the oceans are in danger
and how the marine life is a big part of our lives. Well if you want to do something about it join up, you can go out everyday to clean and rescue
animals. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to Patrick Long (2016), "When you are off–duty, you can take college courses on campuses close to the base you are assigned to, or take
advantage of courses offered on–base through the base education offices"(para. 32). You can further your education for free of practically nothing,
while doing what you love everyday. So, if you don't know how you are going to pay for college there's your other reason.
Plus, they offer great benefits on top of free college. According to the Benefits of Joining the Coast Guard (2017), " The benefits provided by the Coast
Guard includes money for college with the GI Bill, free medical, dental and eye care, and more" (para.1). The Coast Guard is a great way to make sure
you are set in life and to do what you enjoy.
Another reason to join is, while you serve you get to travel around to new places and you get to meet new people. Who doesn't want to travel? To
see new and exciting places is amazing. The opportunity to see the world and nature for its beauty, you can't pass it up. Plus, while you travel you
get to meet all kinds of people. You can make lasting friendships. Imagine waking up in a new place almost every week or every day. To see a sunset
in a different part of the world is almost heavenly. When experience those things with new friends you will never forget it. It is going to be the best

Coast Guard Values
I believe that the United States Coast Guard consists of people who are the best of the best. Being in the Coast Guard means more than what most
people may think. I know joining the armed forces means I have to be willing to serve my country and take any actions necessary to defend it,
which may include giving my life to protect others. The Coast Guard's three core values encompass the mental capacity needed in order to do so.
The three values of Honor, Respect, and Devotion to Duty are vital to holding any position in the Coast Guard. Honor is more than just a word. It
helps define who you are, what you believe in and is a statement of your character. Honor is not something a person can ask for, it must be earned. It is

Currently there are 221, 29 foot Response Boat Small assets in the Coast Guards inventory. Of these assets, all were made with hardened tempered
glass. This paper will discuss a need to remove current glass and replace with automotive safety glass to reduce hazards to boat crews. Recently there
have been several mishaps involving RBS–29 windows breaking. One such incident in Old House Channel in the Pamlico Sound of North Carolina
where the windshield broke in from a swamped bow, and incoming wave caused the windshield to break lacerate the face of both crewmembers in the
front seats. Personally I have been at a unit where on 2 separate occasions, side windows have broken, causing shards of glass to be scattered

Leadership Philosophy Of The Coast Guard
Subj:LEADERSHIP PHILOSOPHY1.Leadership is the measure of one's ability to influence others to work to achieve a goal. I say that it is the
measure of one's ability because, a leader will always be judged and when described, will normally have an adjective prior to the word leader.
Some examples are: He was a good leader or He was a horrible leader and could not lead ants to a cookie crumb. Influencing people is the primary
purpose of a leader. To influence people, one must realize that every person is different and has their own motivating factors. In order to know
what a person's motivating factors are, a leader must know his people. Though, in this course it is said that the Coast Guard has leaders and
managers, I would argue that to be a leader in the Coast Guard, one must also be a manager. A good leader could lead a group of people right off of
a cliff, but should be able to manage the situation, circumstances and resources, so as not to lead his/her people off of the proverbial cliff. This can
be seen in Leading Chiefs that do not manage their personnel allowance list (PAL), leading their unit into a very unnecessarily difficult transfer
season. 2.During the course of my career, through two armed services, I have been influenced by numerous leaders. I can say, with absolute certainty,
that everyone is an example. Not all of those examples are good and those can be the best form of influence. An example of what not to, do or be, can
be more valuable than gold.

Hiss vehemently denied these claims, saying that he had "never been a communist", but then was eventually found guilty. At this point, he had gone
too long without being charged and could not be charged with espionage, his original charge, but he was found to be lying under oath. He was
charged with perjury, and served 44 months in jail. This is one of many examples of the type of persecution present during this period. Thousands of
people were convicted, and even those that were not convicted suffered setbacks and ostracism by their friends, family, co–workers and employers.
Many people who were even suspected of being Communist were almost immediately fired from their jobs. An example of this is the West Coast Port
Security Program. This... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The justification behind this was that any Communist that was working with the ports was a security risk between Russia and the United States. At first,
almost all of the unions of dockworkers and seamen joined in this program, because they were all anticommunist. After some time, the Coast Guard
became involved in the program. The Coast Guard took over many functions that the unions had been handling by themselves when it came to this
project, and this was met by growing hostility from the unions as well as the individual employers. After the involvement of the Coast Guard, many
unions became angry and hostile toward the Coast Guard: "There was considerable opposition on the part of the maritime unions to the original
transfer of these functions to the Coast Guard and this antagonism toward the Coast Guard has not altogether abated." (Brown/Fassett). Not only did
this lead to a huge invasion of privacy, "nearly 3,800 seamen and dockworkers lost their jobs under the West Coast Port Security Program that had been
established in the immediate aftermath of the Korean War" (Schrecker). Communism was viewed as a huge security risk, and with the government's
propaganda hard at work, all

to our members. To become proficient in collecting required documentation, the Coast Guard needs to eliminate inaccuracies on the Designation of
Beneficiaries and Record of Emergency Data Form (CG 2020D) (ref (c)), Service Members Group Life Insurance Election and Certificate Form

In order to ensure the compliance and all annual verifications are completed accurately, the Coast Guard must create a self–service function located
within Direct Access that would generate each form electronically. Each member would be responsible to update their required data information during
the annually required period (ref (b)), through a self–service function within Direct Access. However, the self–service function would give the member
the ability to change the forms following a life event when needed and not just during the required period. Once the member completes the data entry
requirements within each section, the system would automatically apply an official signature, including a time and date stamp (ref (f)). Adding the
electronic signature process would ensure that the forms were not altered and were generated by the member. Currently, these forms are filled out by
hand and are maintained in the SPO PDR (ref (g)). Far too many times these forms are being reproduced erroneously resulting in numerous forms stored
between multiple PDRs creating confusion of validity and benefit elections. By implementing an electronic validation system, following the member's
digital signature, the forms would automatically be assigned to the SPO work–list for review, verification and electronic signature from the SPO
technician. Upon verification and approval, Direct Access would automatically generate a deduction from the members pay account corresponding with
the coverage elected on the SGLV 8286 and SGLV 8286A forms. Establishing this function would eliminate hundreds of wasted work
–hours annually
for both the members and SPO technicians. Each document would then be uploaded in the member's Electronically Imaged PDR for easy availability
for the Decedent Affairs Officer (DAO) following a personnel casualty. Additionally, each electronic validation would be tracked through CGBI for
command visibility. Creating this process would catapult the Coast Guard out of

The Five Steps Of Exemplary Leadership In The United...
Leading From the Mess
MKC Timothy J. Runnels, U.S. Coast Guard
CPO Academy, Class 234, Team Trent, MKCS Wilson
In the U.S. Coast Guard it is required to report to new units every two to five years based on your rate and location. This allows the service and its
members the ability to diversify in areas such as gaining new knowledge and leadership techniques. Reporting to a new unit serves as an opportunity
to display such techniques and knowledge learned previously. Issues that arise when reporting to a new unit differ in many aspects: unqualified
crew, rigorous watch hours extended, and lack of quality training. However; each issue can be solved by utilizing steps from "The Five Steps of
Exemplary Leadership" as learned in Chief Petty Officers Academy. The Five Steps of Exemplary Leadership are: Modeling the Way, Inspire a Shared
Vision, Challenging the Process, Enabling Others to Act, and Encouraging the Heart (John Wiley & Sons, Inc, 2017). Each has two commitments that
should be met to allow behaviors to be exposed.
Problems that have occurred in recent weeks have negatively influenced the crew of the United States Coast Guard Cutter (USCGC) Dependable and
has set a poor standard that some feel is not held true to the Coast Guard's core values; Honor, Respect, and Devotion to Duty. Good leadership will
aid in the fast recovery of the poor state of many units. Admiral James B. Stockdale stated that "Leadership must be based on goodwill. Goodwill

Coast Guard Senior Enlisted Leadership Course #63
I strongly believe everyone is a Leader; we all play an important role in the success or failure of each other and the Coast Guard. It is my duty as a
Coast Guardsman to inspire greatness, develop a professional workforce, and foster a culture of prosperity poised to overcome today and tomorrow's
challenges, learning from yesterdays' successes and failures.
Throughout my career I have been greatly influenced by leaders with remarkable leadership qualities. A phrase I use often is "What do you think". As
a young Petty Officer, my supervisor often used the phrase "What do you think" . This simplistic phrase was consistently communicated to me when
I asked a question and it assisted me in answering many of my own questions by leading me to conduct my own research and formulating favorable
solutions. My Officer in Charge at Station Key West was a very caring man, his leadership style and decision making clearly displayed his

Unless we capitalize on these special skills sets that this highly technical workforce embodies during the assignment process, we will continue to

service need and in the Assignment Officers (AO) judgment for career development/progression. For members who wish to remain in one of these
career fields/specialties, we as a service are potentially losing out on highly qualified personnel when they move on to a different type of IS or IT

The Navy Of The Coast Guard
1. Today when looking at members of the Coast Guard there is very little difference in uniform to distinguish the senior enlisted and Officer Corps
from that of the Junior Enlisted Corps. The Coast Guard believes that there is a distinct difference between a First Class Petty Officer and a Chief
but has gone away from making that difference easy to see from a distance. The Navy goes so far as to change the entire color and style of their
uniform as well as the change of the combination cover when a member is advanced to the pay grade of E–7. This is due to the belief that the amount
of responsibility one takes on with this advancement warrants the clear delineation, one that can be seen right away. Furthermore, even today when
going through the Chiefs Call to Indoctrination process, all Navy and Coast Guard Chiefs build a hat box solely for the purpose of housing their new
combination cover, a cover that in today's Coast Guard members have been wearing since boot camp. The Coast Guard used to make the same
uniform change as the Navy, and we have strayed from this tradition, strayed at the cost of a loss of respect in this advancement. The Coast Guard
should visibly distinguish E–7 and above by making a change in the uniform regulations and making E–7 and above only authorized to wear the
combination cover. 2. All members of the Coast Guard, As per ref (a), pay for and are issued a Combination Cover upon accession into the Service.

Coast Guard Leadership Philosophy Examples
1.Leadership influences can be placed into two categories, those to model and those to avoid. Every member in the Coast Guard can categorically
place his or her leadership experiences within these categories. In some cases one particular leader can provide examples from both categories, in
some cases a leader has only those traits and characteristics that should be avoided. Regardless of the case, junior members, senior members, and peers
alike are watching and adapting their leadership style based on things that they perceive as helpful. I realized that in every instance throughout my
career where I was in troubled waters, I had either isolated myself or surrounded myself by people that have no vision of moving the organization

As previously stated, my personal leadership philosophy is to be the leader you aspire to be. This leadership philosophy sets a framework for
individuals to model their behavior after those that have been successful within the organization. Generally speaking, our greatest leaders have
attributes and traits that have directly contributed to their successes. The key here is to understand that if you want to be a great leader in the
organization, then you have to look for, identify, and model those behaviors of those ahead of you that have become successful. Take for instance a
small boat coxswain. The coxswain is a position of great responsibility. There are good boat drivers and there are great boat drivers and when making
a parallel to this leadership philosophy it makes sense that an up–and–coming boat driver will want to model their behavior and performance after a
great boat driver; i.e. be the leader you aspire to be. The same method of mentorship and learning is true when it comes to leadership. Some leaders
possess personality characteristics that naturally allow them to lead people with ease. These same leaders are made even greater when they incorporate
teachable leadership principles into their leadership styles and techniques. When they utilize these techniques in their day–to–day leadership their
actions may appear natural to an onlooker, but in fact leadership is a practiced art and in order to and maintain proficiency within leadership it must be
continuously refined. Being a great leader is more than just watching and mimicking behavior. More important than constant observation, continually
life–long learning and application of styles, techniques, and models of leadership will help propel individuals to the forefront of

One resolution to the fuel pollution issue uses the idea of reinvention to curb the damage that smoke and fuel causes to the environment. A U.S.
company, Sea Change LLC. paired with the Maine Maritime Academy to create a more friendly fuel ("1"). The engineering classes at the academy
along with chemists created a fuel that burned cleaner and safer for the environment. The fuel used mirco–glycerol droplets mixed with ultra–low
sulfur diesel to reduce harmful emissions and as a result found a reduction in smoke by 25 to 50 percent ("1"). In addition Nitrogen Oxide levels
showed a reduction by 5 to 15 percent compared to regular low–sulfur diesel at equivalent horsepower ("1"). This hard work truly paid off big for these
two entities and they showed that with some ingenuity safer ways of burning fuel just wait to be

Coast Guard Leadership Standards
Leadership influences: Throughout my Coast Guard career there have been numerous influences guiding my leadership direction. These leadership
influences include family, friends, good and bad Coast Guard leaders, and most importantly my own self reflections. One can read, listen, and study
every leadership principle from the most intelligent academic professionals, however I believe the best leadership teacher for me has been trial and
error. The key is being able to learn from your leadership mistakes and move forward. Life for me is the best teacher over any book ever written about
leadership.

Leadership philosophy: My leadership philosophy can be summed up into my following core values; devotion to people, devotion to duty, and
devotion self. I will always be devoted to the people who work for me. My followers will know without fail that I have their back and their best
interests in mind. That being said, I also value devotion to duty. Ultimately we are a military organization and I will support the direction of our
leaders. We have rules and regulations that we have to adhere to. Core values or not, we are in a rule based organization. Finally I expect the people
who work for me to ultimately have devotion to themselves. A person needs to be always learning and self–improving. An employee of the Coast
Guard should always self–reflect to ensure they are still in line with their core values. If you can't take care of yourself, how can you be expected to
take care of others? If you aren't happy then that will project into your work. If you have strayed from your core values, then how can you ask others
to follow or believe in you? I want the best for my people and if the Coast Guard or their current situation isn't the best for them I want them be brave

Brittany Currie Jane Elkin Graduation Project 16 September 2014 U.S Coast Guard Members of the U.S Coast Guard use patrol boats, cutters, and
aircraft to watch over certain areas in the sky or sea (Noble 224–225). Thinking about U.S Coast Guarding? What would it be like doing certain
missions like searching and rescuing for someone who is missing at sea? Well to some coast guarding looks like a very interesting and yet surprising
career to choose. One of the most important aspects of pursuing this career is having required knowledge. The four main things that include required
knowledge are rates and ranks, chain of command, eleven general orders, and daily knowledge or information. Those who are really good at

Members would be would be happier and

others, on and off duty. Know the direction you are going and effectively communicate expectations so that others clearly understand what the goal is.
Always seek to improve yourself both professionally and academically. Encourage others to identify areas for improvement and inconsistencies in

A second behavior that I recognize I could improve is "Experiments and takes risks, even when there is a chance of failure." This is an area that
had the largest gap between how I rated myself and the average of how others rated the frequency in which I engage in this behavior. I have
engaged in taking risks with regard to standing up for what is right, and bringing concerns to the command about the effect their behavior had on
unit morale. Even doing what I am supposed to do in my position as a senior enlisted leader, I was still put down for doing so. That experimenting
and risk taking was not visible to the unit as a whole, which could explain the gap. Thus, I have backed off on taking those risks in this area. What I
can do in the future is ensure that I pass the word to the crew that I am looking out for morale and unit cohesion, and how I am doing that to make it
more visible. I will seek out new ideas and approaches to our work and make an effort to implement them to see what worked out and what

One of the primary duties of a CMC is to assist and advise their principals of mission, morale, and well–being impacts of existing or proposed policy
changes (Ref. (a)). CMCs strengthen the chain of command by keeping the command aware of existing or potential problems as well as procedures
and practices which affect the mission, readiness, welfare and morale of the crew. CMCs are the sounding board for the commanding officer, acting
as his or her senior enlisted advisor. If CMCs developed coaching as a skill, they could step into the role of an executive coach when needed.
Executive coaching helps define vision, increases job satisfaction, and focuses on goal achievement. Using 360–degree feedback tools, questioning
techniques and coaching skills, CMCs could help their principles improve their leadership abilities, identify and stay focused on long–term goals and
improve day–to–day operations. Once trained, CMCs could use such models as Kouzes and Posner's Leadership Challenge (Ref. (e)) to help coach
their principals into clarifying and strengthening their leadership philosophies and visions. They could also help principals interpret performance
feedback such as Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute (DEOMI) and Organizational Climate Survey (DEOCS) and figure out the next

Coast Guard Petty Officer Stephen Lehmann said the location of the boat prompted searchers to recalculate their plans, the Palm Beach Sun Sentinel
reported. Although the two boys fish together often in the Jupiter Inlet area, they were not prepared for an extended outing, Barney said. "Initial
reports were that they went to the Bahamas, but the family says they did not have supplies for that," Barney told the Sun Sentinel. "They did not pack
water or food for two days." He said the single–engine boat provided only a small area of cover over the center console. Cohen's stepfather, Nick
Korniloff, told reporters on Sunday that the boys were experienced on the water but were not allowed to take the boat out into the ocean. He said the
teens would have never been allowed to boat to the Bahamas alone, but a social media post from one of the boys indicated they might have been
headed to the Bahamas, according to the Coast Guard. Authorities initially believed they may have been headed there, but learned from the boys'
parents that the pair typically do not go farther than an offshore ledge... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

1.It is with great pride and tremendous pleasure I offer my strongest possible recommendation for Jacob R. Carse to the Coast Guard Academy Class
of 2022.
2.I have known Jacob and his family since 2012 when I was stationed with his father on the LANTAREA staff. I was immediately taken with his
maturity and focus. Even at such a young age, Jacob was already expressing his desire to study mechanical engineering and displayed a passion to
serve in the military, though initially he was torn between the Naval and Coast Guard Academies.
3.Over the years, Jacob has continued to maintain that high level of determination as he developed an impressive resume that focused on three pillars;
academics, athletics and serving his community. Undoubtedly, this tireless drive to better himself and to serve others was instilled through his
upbringing in a Coast Guard household where our Core Values were imprinted into his daily decision making. The nuances of being raised in a home

the varsity and club level (unusually at the same time) and tirelessly looks to serve both his community and local Coast Guard units; there are critical
pieces not captured in his resume. Having to maintain this high level of performance while completing two PCS transfers during high school and an
unfortunate car accident which caused him to miss most of the first two weeks of school...as a new student his senior year...have forced Jacob to

was more funny than anything though, since the shark's mouth isn't big enough to bite him.
As of now, Mr. Romer has been working in the Gulf of Mexico altogether for 34 years, since 1982. At first he only made about $3, then it raised to
$5, then to about $7. He said being a diver was the most difficult, challenging, and exciting job he has ever had. His most favorite part of his job

his job while diving was being away from home so long. The worst part is having to manage all of the people that work for him. Everytime they do

Coast Guard Case Summary
1.Current Coast Guard policy, reference (a), relies entirely on the Decedent Affairs Officer (DAO) as a collateral duty. This responsibility for
coordinating support services related to active duty, reserve and dependents deaths is extremely time consuming and detracts from a DAO's normal
duties. The lack of a full time DAO to provide assistance to the family or next of kin (NOK) is stressful and emotionally draining on the individual.
The Decedent Affairs Officer needs to be streamlined into a full time position under the command of the Personnel Service Center 2.There are 23

The financial responsibility of funding a case initially falls on the DAO's unit. The average DAO case costs $10k–$13k dollars. This cost expenditure
has the potential to affect unit readiness or meeting mission requirements if funds are unavailable for other critical needs. Unit funds will not be
reimbursed from headquarters until all expenses have been expended and paid out. This can take anywhere from 10 days to several weeks
depending on the circumstances of the members death. Requiring the unit to operate on a negative budget due to no fault of their own is
unacceptable and irresponsible. 5.Opponents will argue the Coast Guard can't afford to hire new personnel. Almost certainly true, so use active
duty personnel and make DAO a special assignment. Make it a two year tour with a priority 3 assignment due to the sensitive nature of the position.
This will provide a full time billet as well as offer challenging opportunities and some sea going rates may see it as an opportunity to get an ashore
assignment. 6.Some may argue nothing is wrong with the current process. Just because that is the way we have always done it, doesn't mean its right.
There is always room for improvement. Funding issues for individual units would be alleviated as all funeral costs would be funded by PSC directly
instead of having to reimburse the unit after the fact. This would ensure unit readiness and funds availability for critical

My Experience At The Coast Guard

  • 1. My Experience At The Coast Guard One of my first experiences in the Coast Guard was a question that went out to the whole company, "Why do you want to be in the Coast Guard?" Naturally my response was that I wanted to help people. Little did I know at the time, that as I progressed through my career, so too would the focus of my desire to help shift to the people placed under my charge. Starting out I didn't place much thought into leadership. Luckily, I have had the privilege to serve with several people that have demonstrated exceptional leadership throughout my career. Jeff Dorwart, John Lorentz, Marvin Wells, etc., the list goes on. All of whom have imparted some of their leadership wisdom upon me, either through demonstration or conversation. Leadership to me is the ability to influence others in the pursuit of a shared vision or goal, regardless of whether it is yours or one you yourself have been influenced to follow. 2.For some of my leadership mentors, they modeled the way by their actions and personal interactions. Marvin Wells always maintained an outstanding uniform. He usually had a smile on his face and presented himself as a very approachable individual. In fact, even when I was getting "corrected", it didn 't feel like an ass chewing, rather a course correction that I ended up being harder on myself than what he was. Jeff Dorwart and John Lorentz were both big picture thinkers. They would shamelessly share the big picture, direction and desired end result with all. This created buy–in and ... • 2. Essay On Coast Guard The Extreme Reserve Commute The extreme commute imposed on reservists is detrimental to both the member and the unit. Upon first entering into the Coast Guard Reserves, members are placed at units that are within a reasonable commuting distance. By working and drilling close to their homes, reservists are able to easily commute and actively participate in reserve drills and activities while still maintaining their busy schedules in their personal lives. When the Coast Guard imposes a mandatory Permanent Change of Station of members when they advance, most times to locations outside of their reasonable commuting distance, and at the members' financial expense, it creates unnecessary impacts for both the member and the Coast Guard. As reserve ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This causes many members to choose to either not want to advance or to unwillingly choose to be placed in the IRR rather than accept orders. This is a great loss to both the Coast Guard and the member. If members choose to depart, the Coast Guard now loses a valued member with training, experience and subject matter expertise. The Coast Guard has invested many hours of training and money in each Reserve member to try to ensure that members are educated and capable of augmenting the Active component of the Coast Guard and respond to emergencies as needed. The main purpose of the Coast Guard Reservists is to train to deploy. It would be time and cost effective to be able to do that close to the members home. The Coast Guard would benefit by retaining members at their current duty location instead of transferring them upon advancing. At the Unit level, there would be a continuation of operations, for the overall Coast Guard, the training and the money invested in preparing the member would not be wasted. Members would be would be happier and continue to serve and be a productive member in the Coast ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Importance Of Coast Guard Security, maritime safety, and saving lives. These are the components of what the United States Coast Guard provides for America. The Coast Guard is one of the five armed services in the United States and was the only force on the sea until the United States Department of the Navy came along(USCG: A Multi–Mission Force). The Revenue Cutter Service, now known as the Coast Guard began in 1915 and its purpose since then is to protect the United States, the environment, and to save lives at sea. The United States Coast Guard has an immense importance on the citizens of The United States because they shield any kind of danger, is committed to keeping the environment safe and ideal, and making saving lives is a priority. With this being said, the United States Coast Guard is the chief maritime guardian of the seas because they are dedicated to helping protect the homeland, preserving the maritime environment, and addressing the variety of emergencies. First and foremost, the Coast Guard is able to delineate the portrayal of chief maritime guardian by helping protect the homeland. The United States Coast Guard is able to do this at all times because they serve under the U.S Department of Homeland Security as times of peace and complete tasks such as search and rescue, ice patrols, etc. At times of war the United States Coast Guard can be with the United States Department of the Navy under the President's order and defend the nation against threats and terrorism. • 4. Leadership Vs Coast Guard My definition of Leadership is similar to the Coast Guard's definition of Leadership, which is to influence others to achieve the same goal. The Coast Guard's definition of leadership from the Leadership Development Framework COMDTINST M5351.3 is Leadership is the ability to influence others to obtain their obedience, respect, confidence, and loyal cooperation. My previous leadership influences during my career were able to lead myself and my shipmates by influencing us to accomplish many missions. The BMC Rick Barones and the MKCM Darcy Collins of the Coast Guard influence their people with compassion and respect. They also lead with confidence and knowledge of their rates and craft, which made them worth listening to. I plan and would ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Leadership Of The Coast Guard 1.Leadership in the Coast Guard is the process of guiding and inspiring others toward closer adherence to the core values of Honor, Respect, and Devotion to Duty. Leadership is a set of behaviors rather than just a set of ideals. Ideals are good, but ideals without the corresponding behaviors are useless. The best way to guide others is to show by example; a true leader not only speaks out in favor of the core values, but also exhibits them in their daily life. 2.Although leadership traits can be studied from textbooks, the best way to adopt good leadership traits is to follow an example of positive leadership. In my career, I've been very fortunate to have had numerous positive role models on which to model by own behavior after. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Fortunately, another member (also just a non–rate fireman, also new to the unit), finally stepped forward and challenged the behavior of several more senior members. Although the situation got tense for a few moments, the end result was that the lack of respect towards our struggling shipmate ended. The courage of Fireman Neil C. had a profound impact on me. Not only did it put an end to the disrespectful behavior towards a shipmate, but now, 24 years later, it still has an impact on me, as it provides me an example of how I should behave. b.Later, at this same duty station, as a new EM3, I was anxious to prove myself as a competent electrician. However, during my first month on the job, when installing a replacement pump motor, I carelessly wired it incorrectly, which resulted in the windings of the brand–new, extremely expensive motor burning out approximately five minutes after I installed it. I was horrified by this turn of events. I immediately realized my wiring mistake, but unfortunately I realized it about five minutes too late. I would have given anything to be able to turn back time by those five minutes so I could correct my error. I was scared to death. I didn't know how to tell my supervisor. Our engineering warrant was extremely demanding, and had just finished yelling at one of the MKs for accidently dropping a wrench into the bilge. I didn't know what ... • 6. Coast Guard Marine Case Summary 1.Patrol Boats in the Coast Guard, specifically 87' Coastal Patrol Boats (CPB's) have remote geographic homeports which hinder adequate and appropriate support levels. Modernization of our support functions has centralized our supply, administrative support and inspection teams to larger ports. This centralization has caused time burdens on receiving parts, personnel support and maintenance assistance with our remotely located units. District Eight 87' CPB's should be pooled with other CPB's and Coast Guard units to increase needed support and increase readiness. 2.The 87' CPB, are in traditional home ports from there predecessor the 82'WPB. They are spread out throughout each sector in either a populated or remote area based on historical... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Political detractors will be present in this process as they always are when moving an asset and its crew from a community and congressional district. However the 87' CPB fleet is currently dealing with these issues in the bow to stern program every four years through the Operating Facility Change Orders, OFCO, which are completed during the planning phase to notify congress and concerned parties. Additionally local critics have brought up facts of longer response times to these remote areas in times of need. The truth is that these 87'CPB's rarely operate in these remote areas. Rather, they operate in the larger ports transiting in some cases up to 5 hours to their operational area. In all cases involvement with the public affairs office would have to happen very early in the process to ensure the proper message is developed. 6.District Eight currently has sixteen 87' CPB's, nine are co–located in four different ports, and seven are in remote locations. The pooling process would determine which locations are capable of supporting two 87' CPB's instead of one and shifting the cutter and crews to those ports. For instance the CGC PELICAN could move to CG Station Grand Isle, LA. The CGC STURGEON is currently home ported in Grand Isle which would give a smaller span of control for the Sector New Orleans to provide ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Coast Guard Memo 1.When I joined the Coast Guard 21 years ago, I would never have guessed I would be writing a memo based on my leadership philosophy. My first two years and ten days in the Coast Guard was the most miserable I have ever been. I was one of two females at a Small Boat Station in Rockland, Maine. My roommate and I were treated differently, to say the least. We were the only two mess cooks out of 20 non–rated personnel. Her and I would switch every other month for more than one year. It took us twice as long as the men to get communication room and boat crew qualified. We had to do colors only in the rain or snow. We were assigned Extra Military Instruction (EMI), like throwing heaving lines for hours on the pier, because we were "weaker"... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Know what you don't know. I believe that as a leader, it's important to be okay with not knowing everything. Being honest about your knowledge base and not pretending to be something you aren't, while it's humbling, brings the most respect. When I was a Company Commander, running my first company, I was told – if they ask you a question that you don't know the answer to, just say "Get out of my face, I don't have time for that. Never look like you don't know the answer". Of course, that is an extreme and unusual scenario. But, it's something that I think of often, and am careful to not embody as a leader. Asking the "whys" and "what if's" in terms of policy and procedure provides you with the background and information you need to make good decisions for your unit, your people and the future. It's especially important when reporting to a new unit, or taking a new ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Coast Guard Research Paper What is life after high school? Have you thought about what you want to do, whether it's college, work, or military? Well if you have thought about the military route, so have I. The Coast Guard has many reasons as to why it could be the best branch of military for the future. There are many reasons to join the Coast Guard, but the three best reasons are to help protect the marine ecosystems, go to college for free, and travel around the world. When you join the Coast Guard you have the opportunity to help clean and protect the marine ecosystems. We all know how the oceans are in danger and how the marine life is a big part of our lives. Well if you want to do something about it join up, you can go out everyday to clean and rescue animals. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Patrick Long (2016), "When you are off–duty, you can take college courses on campuses close to the base you are assigned to, or take advantage of courses offered on–base through the base education offices"(para. 32). You can further your education for free of practically nothing, while doing what you love everyday. So, if you don't know how you are going to pay for college there's your other reason. Plus, they offer great benefits on top of free college. According to the Benefits of Joining the Coast Guard (2017), " The benefits provided by the Coast Guard includes money for college with the GI Bill, free medical, dental and eye care, and more" (para.1). The Coast Guard is a great way to make sure you are set in life and to do what you enjoy. Another reason to join is, while you serve you get to travel around to new places and you get to meet new people. Who doesn't want to travel? To see new and exciting places is amazing. The opportunity to see the world and nature for its beauty, you can't pass it up. Plus, while you travel you get to meet all kinds of people. You can make lasting friendships. • 9. Coast Guard Values I believe that the United States Coast Guard consists of people who are the best of the best. Being in the Coast Guard means more than what most people may think. I know joining the armed forces means I have to be willing to serve my country and take any actions necessary to defend it, which may include giving my life to protect others. The Coast Guard's three core values encompass the mental capacity needed in order to do so. The three values of Honor, Respect, and Devotion to Duty are vital to holding any position in the Coast Guard. Honor is more than just a word. It helps define who you are, what you believe in and is a statement of your character. Honor is not something a person can ask for, it must be earned. It is gained alongside with ... This paper will discuss a need to remove current glass and replace with automotive safety glass to reduce hazards to boat crews. Recently there have been several mishaps involving RBS–29 windows breaking. One such incident in Old House Channel in the Pamlico Sound of North Carolina where the windshield broke in from a swamped bow, and incoming wave caused the windshield to break lacerate the face of both crewmembers in the front seats. • 11. Leadership Philosophy Of The Coast Guard Subj:LEADERSHIP PHILOSOPHY1.Leadership is the measure of one's ability to influence others to work to achieve a goal. I say that it is the measure of one's ability because, a leader will always be judged and when described, will normally have an adjective prior to the word leader. Some examples are: He was a good leader or He was a horrible leader and could not lead ants to a cookie crumb. Influencing people is the primary purpose of a leader. To influence people, one must realize that every person is different and has their own motivating factors. In order to know what a person's motivating factors are, a leader must know his people. Though, in this course it is said that the Coast Guard has leaders and managers, I would argue that to be a leader in the Coast Guard, one must also be a manager. A good leader could lead a group of people right off of a cliff, but should be able to manage the situation, circumstances and resources, so as not to lead his/her people off of the proverbial cliff. This can be seen in Leading Chiefs that do not manage their personnel allowance list (PAL), leading their unit into a very unnecessarily difficult transfer season. 2.During the course of my career, through two armed services, I have been influenced by numerous leaders. I can say, with absolute certainty, that everyone is an example. Not all of those examples are good and those can be the best form of influence. An example of what not to, do or be, can be more valuable than gold. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. West Coast Guard Hiss vehemently denied these claims, saying that he had "never been a communist", but then was eventually found guilty. At this point, he had gone too long without being charged and could not be charged with espionage, his original charge, but he was found to be lying under oath. He was charged with perjury, and served 44 months in jail. This is one of many examples of the type of persecution present during this period. Thousands of people were convicted, and even those that were not convicted suffered setbacks and ostracism by their friends, family, co–workers and employers. Many people who were even suspected of being Communist were almost immediately fired from their jobs. An example of this is the West Coast Port Security Program. This... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The justification behind this was that any Communist that was working with the ports was a security risk between Russia and the United States. At first, almost all of the unions of dockworkers and seamen joined in this program, because they were all anticommunist. After some time, the Coast Guard became involved in the program. The Coast Guard took over many functions that the unions had been handling by themselves when it came to this project, and this was met by growing hostility from the unions as well as the individual employers. After the involvement of the Coast Guard, many unions became angry and hostile toward the Coast Guard: "There was considerable opposition on the part of the maritime unions to the original transfer of these functions to the Coast Guard and this antagonism toward the Coast Guard has not altogether abated." Each member would be responsible to update their required data information during the annually required period (ref (b)), through a self–service function within Direct Access. However, the self–service function would give the member the ability to change the forms following a life event when needed and not just during the required period. Once the member completes the data entry requirements within each section, the system would automatically apply an official signature, including a time and date stamp (ref (f)). Adding the electronic signature process would ensure that the forms were not altered and were generated by the member. Currently, these forms are filled out by hand and are maintained in the SPO PDR (ref (g)). Far too many times these forms are being reproduced erroneously resulting in numerous forms stored between multiple PDRs creating confusion of validity and benefit elections. By implementing an electronic validation system, following the member's digital signature, the forms would automatically be assigned to the SPO work–list for review, verification and electronic signature from the SPO technician. Upon verification and approval, Direct Access would automatically generate a deduction from the members pay account corresponding with the coverage elected on the SGLV 8286 and SGLV 8286A forms. Establishing this function would eliminate hundreds of wasted work –hours annually for both the members and SPO technicians. • 14. The Five Steps Of Exemplary Leadership In The United... Leading From the Mess MKC Timothy J. Runnels, U.S. Coast Guard CPO Academy, Class 234, Team Trent, MKCS Wilson In the U.S. Coast Guard it is required to report to new units every two to five years based on your rate and location. This allows the service and its members the ability to diversify in areas such as gaining new knowledge and leadership techniques. Reporting to a new unit serves as an opportunity to display such techniques and knowledge learned previously. Issues that arise when reporting to a new unit differ in many aspects: unqualified crew, rigorous watch hours extended, and lack of quality training. However; each issue can be solved by utilizing steps from "The Five Steps of Exemplary Leadership" as learned in Chief Petty Officers Academy. The Five Steps of Exemplary Leadership are: Modeling the Way, Inspire a Shared Vision, Challenging the Process, Enabling Others to Act, and Encouraging the Heart (John Wiley & Sons, Inc, 2017). Each has two commitments that should be met to allow behaviors to be exposed. Problems that have occurred in recent weeks have negatively influenced the crew of the United States Coast Guard Cutter (USCGC) Dependable and has set a poor standard that some feel is not held true to the Coast Guard's core values; Honor, Respect, and Devotion to Duty. Today when looking at members of the Coast Guard there is very little difference in uniform to distinguish the senior enlisted and Officer Corps from that of the Junior Enlisted Corps. The Coast Guard believes that there is a distinct difference between a First Class Petty Officer and a Chief but has gone away from making that difference easy to see from a distance. The Navy goes so far as to change the entire color and style of their uniform as well as the change of the combination cover when a member is advanced to the pay grade of E–7. This is due to the belief that the amount of responsibility one takes on with this advancement warrants the clear delineation, one that can be seen right away. Furthermore, even today when going through the Chiefs Call to Indoctrination process, all Navy and Coast Guard Chiefs build a hat box solely for the purpose of housing their new combination cover, a cover that in today's Coast Guard members have been wearing since boot camp. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As previously stated, my personal leadership philosophy is to be the leader you aspire to be. This leadership philosophy sets a framework for individuals to model their behavior after those that have been successful within the organization. Generally speaking, our greatest leaders have attributes and traits that have directly contributed to their successes. The key here is to understand that if you want to be a great leader in the organization, then you have to look for, identify, and model those behaviors of those ahead of you that have become successful. Take for instance a small boat coxswain. The coxswain is a position of great responsibility. There are good boat drivers and there are great boat drivers and when making a parallel to this leadership philosophy it makes sense that an up–and–coming boat driver will want to model their behavior and performance after a great boat driver; i.e. be the leader you aspire to be. The same method of mentorship and learning is true when it comes to leadership. Some leaders possess personality characteristics that naturally allow them to lead people with ease. These same leaders are made even greater when they incorporate teachable leadership principles into their leadership styles and techniques. When they utilize these techniques in their day–to–day leadership their actions may appear natural to an onlooker, but in fact leadership is a practiced art and in order to and maintain proficiency within leadership it must be continuously refined. Being a great leader is more than just watching and mimicking behavior. More important than constant observation, continually life–long learning and application of styles, techniques, and models of leadership will help propel individuals to the forefront of ... • 34. Mr Romer Coast Guard Mr. Romer joined the Coast guard straight out of high school. The coast guard is a branch of the army forces under the Department of Transportation since 1967. The people in the coast guard are responsible for the enforcement of maritime law and the protection of the life and property at sea. In the time of war, the coast guard would serve as a part of the United States Navy. After 4 ВЅ years of being in the coast guard, Mr. Romer left and attended a diving school in Pearl Harbor. A little while later he also attended a diving school in California. After leaving the school in California, he went to the Gulf of Mexico to work. Romer runs a 300 foot construction boat, called an intervention vessel, that holds about 100 pounds. They do construction below water from 3,000 to 10,000 feet deep. He said they don't normally have issues with sharks, but once, before we were born, they had an occasion where a diver was underwater with his shiny equipment hanging off of him, and a Black Tip shark kept nudging him in the ribcage trying to get the equipment. He said it was more funny than anything though, since the shark's mouth isn't big enough to bite him. As of now, Mr. Romer has been working in the Gulf of Mexico altogether for 34 years, since 1982. At first he only made about $3, then it raised to $5, then to about $7. He said being a diver was the most difficult, challenging, and exciting job he has ever had. His most favorite part of his job now is "showing guys how to get a complex task done safely." He also enjoys passing on his experiences for them to learn from. The worst part of his job while diving was being away from home so long. The worst part is having to manage all of the people that work for him. Everytime they do something he has to make sure everything is in order and that everyone knows what is going on and what they need to do to help, or making sure they are all on the same page. • 35. Coast Guard CPOA Reflection What I Learned from the Coast Guard CPO Academy The Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Academy (CPOA) is a leadership training offered to active duty and reserve enlisted personnel in the paygrade of E–7. The training is a five weeks course that focuses on personal and professional development through understanding human behavior, conduct, values and ethics. It is a multi–service training consisting of the Coast Guard, Navy, and Air Force personnel. My experienced in the academy is a memorable one. It is a unique experienced that I will cherish for the rest of my military career. There are many valuable lessons that I learned in the course that I intend on using both professionally and personally. In particular, the Leadership Practice Inventory (LPI) survey, the Physical Fitness Training, and the camaraderie that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I sent my LPI request to observers that are mostly senior enlisted. I was mostly surprised by their responses, but was very glad to receive their honest and unbiased feedbacks. Their responses were not only informative, but were also reflective of my performance as a person and as a leader. I intend on using their responses to fine–tune my personal and professional skills to become a much more effective and productive individual. Physical Fitness Training I enjoyed the physical fitness training in the academy. While I was deeply disappointed to learn that the Coast Guard does not have a Physical Fitness Assessment/Physical Readiness Test requirements like the other military service, I was very impressed with the variety of physical exercises that they introduced. In particular, I found practical applications for the TRX exercises. I intend on introducing this exercise program in my next command. I think this is a good training that we can use in commands/units were spaces are limited to conduct conventional exercises. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 36. Coast Guard Case Summary 1.Current Coast Guard policy, reference (a), relies entirely on the Decedent Affairs Officer (DAO) as a collateral duty. This responsibility for coordinating support services related to active duty, reserve and dependents deaths is extremely time consuming and detracts from a DAO's normal duties. The lack of a full time DAO to provide assistance to the family or next of kin (NOK) is stressful and emotionally draining on the individual. The Decedent Affairs Officer needs to be streamlined into a full time position under the command of the Personnel Service Center 2.There are 23 DAO's assigned throughout the Coast Guard. Thirteen at Bases, Seven at training centers and three at other key units. The DAO's responsibility is coordinating support... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The financial responsibility of funding a case initially falls on the DAO's unit. The average DAO case costs $10k–$13k dollars. This cost expenditure has the potential to affect unit readiness or meeting mission requirements if funds are unavailable for other critical needs. Unit funds will not be reimbursed from headquarters until all expenses have been expended and paid out. This can take anywhere from 10 days to several weeks depending on the circumstances of the members death. Requiring the unit to operate on a negative budget due to no fault of their own is unacceptable and irresponsible. 5.Opponents will argue the Coast Guard can't afford to hire new personnel. Almost certainly true, so use active duty personnel and make DAO a special assignment. Make it a two year tour with a priority 3 assignment due to the sensitive nature of the position. This will provide a full time billet as well as offer challenging opportunities and some sea going rates may see it as an opportunity to get an ashore assignment. 6.Some may argue nothing is wrong with the current process. Just because that is the way we have always done it, doesn't mean its right. There is always room for improvement. Funding issues for individual units would be alleviated as all funeral costs would be funded by PSC directly instead of having to reimburse the unit after the fact. This would ensure unit readiness and funds availability for critical ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 38. Research Paper On Coast Guard 1.Know your target and what is beyond it. We all have tasks that need to be completed and have deadlines. However, we also need to be aware of our larger purpose beyond the immediate task in front of us. Know where we are headed, as a unit and a service. Make sure you communicate the vision you have of the future to those you work with. We all need to know why we are doing what we are doing and how it will influence that vision. 2.Honor our traditions. The Coast Guard is highly regarded throughout the world. The men and women who went before us set a high standard. While we must continually try and improve ourselves and our service, we can never forget where we have come from. Our history is the foundation of our greatness and provides the strength we need to face tomorrow's challenges. 3.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Strengthen the team. We all must continually grow and improve for the benefit of the team. Sharpening your skills, increasing your fitness and mastering your craft are not selfish acts. The need to be ready to support your teammates is real. Work hard so that they may depend on you. We all have weaknesses and at one time or another may have been that "weak link" that limited a team. Learn to strengthen those areas you are weak in. When you have grown strong, go and teach others how to do the same. 4.Empower the individual. The caliber of the men and women we serve with always amazes me. Each of us needs to be someone who encourages greatness in those around us. Sometimes the best thing a leader can do is provide "top cover" to a motivated visionary. Give them enough guidance so they know they are heading the a good direction, ask for updates on progress, and then hold on as they propel us into the next great thing. Vision and ability are not ... • 39. US Coast Guard As the skipper of a vessel you have many responsibilities to reckon with, such as the safety of the crew, the vessel's seaworthiness, weather, currents, navigation, attentiveness to other vessels and the appropriate operation of the boat. But, boating can be fun, safe and rewarding if you take time to learn how to safely operate your boat, and follow the rules. Learning the requisite laws and regulations is a good starting point. The United States Coast Guard (USCG) distributes a publication call Navigation Rules: International – Inland. This publication, which can be ordered or downloaded from the USCG website, is also referred to as the navigational "Rules of the Road" or "Coloregs". These regulations apply to vessels operating on international and inland waters, and include the rules ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Drains (or scuppers) should be clear; pulpits or lifelines should be secure; all hoses and clamps should be tight. Be sure you have all needed components and equipment for the boat, and that they work– things such as spare parts, lights, an appropriately sized anchor (that is attached to the boat by intact line), and docking lines. These listed precautions only scratch the surface of all the aspects of a good, sound boat. By the way, is your boat registered or documented as required by your state or municipality? Speaking of equipment, safety equipment is an important part of boating and shouldn't be overlooked. Some of the necessary pieces of equipment include: life vests; sound making devices, such as horns and whistles; visual distress signals, such as flashing strobes, flares, first aid supplies, and a deployable floating cushion. There should be an adequate number of each type of safety equipment on board, the equipment should be in good working order, and all passengers should know how to access and operate the equipment.
