How does my media product represent particular social groups?
1. How does my media product
represent particular social groups?
2. What are social groups?
• Social groups are a ‘collection of people who
interact with each other and share similar
characteristics and a sense of unity’.
• This includes groups such as gender, age, class,
sexuality etc.
3. Representation of Gender
• My magazine represents people of both genders and is not catered
to just one. In my research I found that many rock music magazines
had a almost equal audience of male and female so I did not try to
appeal to just one gender.
• Rock magazines are often associated with roughness which is a
stereotypical male trait, therefore girls could be discouraged from
reading, however I have included many elements that could appeal
to both genders.
Images of both genders are
used, plus artists that contain
both male and female artists.
4. Representation of Gender
• I have mentioned bands which contain singers of both genders, therefore
this would appeal to both men and women.
• The colour scheme represents both genders as it has colours associated with
men which are black and red, however it also includes pink which would be
associated with females.
• The articles I have included include both male and female artists, therefore
the overall content gives a wide representation of both genders.
• My magazine represents gender through the use of images, it includes
photographs of both men and women, and although there are more photos
of women included, the photos of the man are on the double page spread so
there is an equal spread.
• The style of the magazine is overall rough and bold, this could
stereotypically represent men better but the variety of styles I have used
could appeal to women as well as they have more interest in the overall
aesthetic.
5. Representation of Age
• My magazine is targeted at teenagers and young adults.
• Firstly the style represents teenagers, the colour scheme includes
both bright and dark colours, therefore giving off an exciting and
grunge look. Also the variety in style for example with the different
fonts gives a unique and spontaneous style.
• The artists featured in my magazine are all relevant and have
released music lately, therefore younger people are more likely to be
interested in newer artists.
• The amount of content would also appeal to a younger audience as
they may have more time to read the whole magazine.
• The photographs are of young people, therefore teenagers will be
more likely to relate to the magazine.
6. Representation of Age
• However my magazine could appeal to different age groups other
than teenagers as well.
• Because of the lively style of the magazine this could represent the
audience of older children.
• Also just because they are not directly represented, adults (age 30+)
may be fans of rock music so they could find that they want to read
the magazine anyway.
A young person is used on the front cover.
Bright and bold colours appeal to a younger
audience.

7. Representation of Class
• My magazine is aimed at the middle/working class, one way I have
represented this is through the price.
• Originally I had planned to make the pricing £3.00, however
through the survey I conducted in my research I learned that most
people would only be willing to pay £2.00, so I changed the pricing
to represent middle – working class.
• Another way I have represented class is through free gifts and
giveaways, my magazine contains four posters and a section where
you can win festival tickets. If people are unsure about buying the
magazine because of the price then the added incentives of posters
means you are getting more than just articles to read. Also he
opportunity to win concert tickets is a nice bonus as they could get
them for free.
8. Representation of Class
The price of my
magazine is £2 which is
affordable but not so
cheap it will ruin the
quality of the product.
The incentive of
getting festival
tickets for free
could appeal to the
middle/working
class who might not
be able to afford
them.
The addition of 4 posters mean
the reader is not just paying for
a magazine, as they get extras
which could appeal to people
who buy the magazine as a
luxury.
9. Representation of sub-cultures
• My magazine represents many subcultures associated with rock
music, for example punks, goths and emos.
• Punks are fans of punk rock music who are characterised by “anti-
establishment views and the promotion of individual freedom”. One
way they are represented in my magazine is through the style, as the
variety of fonts used could appeal to different individuals, therefore
there they are guaranteed to have one that appeals to them. Also the
character on my double page spread is wearing clothing which
represents the punk subculture – a flannel, black skinny jeans and a
dark t-shirt.
• Goths are people who listen to darker styles of rock music, for
example screamo and heavy metal, to represent this I have included
bands that fit into these genres on both the front cover and contents
page, for example Motionless in White.
10. Representation of sub-cultures
• Emo is a sub-genre of rock and a name given to people who like this
music. As a sub-culture they also have a certain style which involves
bright neon colours. I have represented this group by firstly
including bands that are emo on the front cover, for example All
Time Low . In my colour scheme I have also included bright colours
like red and pink which represents the emo style.
