2. INTRODUCTION

subgroup of retrovirus) that causes HIV infection and over
time acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).
• AIDS is a condition in humans in which progressive failure of
the immune system allows life-threatening opportunistic
infections and cancers to thrive.
3. • Without treatment, average survival time after infection with
HIV is estimated to be 9 to 11 years, depending on the HIV
subtype.
• Infection with HIV occurs by the transfer
of blood, semen, vaginal fluid, pre-ejaculate, or breast milk.
Within these bodily fluids, HIV is present as both free virus
particles and virus within infected immune cells.

1. If a patient is admitted for HIV related condition principal
diagnosis should be B20,followed by additional HIV related
conditions
2. If a patient is having HIV admitted for unrelated condition
principal diagnosis should be unrelated condition ,followed
by B20 and additional HIV related conditions
10. • Asymptomatic HIV is reported with Z21
• Patient with inconclusive HIV serology reported with R75
• HIV infection in pregnancy childbirth and the puerperium
reported using o98.7,followed by B20 and HIV related illness
codes.
• To determine patient HIV health status use Z11.4
• For counselling use Z71.7
