Disorders of skin appendages
1.
2. Skin appendages (or adnexa) are skin-
associated structures that serve a particular
function including sensation, contractility,
lubrication and heat loss.
Types of Appendages include hair, glands,
and nails. Sweat Glands are distributed all
over the body except nipples and outer
genitals.
3. common skin appendages are
hairs (sensation, heat loss, filter for
breathing, protection), arrector pilli (smooth
muscles that pull hairs straight), sebaceous
glands (secrete sebum onto hair follicle,
which oils the hair), sweat glands (can be
sweat secreted with strong odour or with a
faint odour and nails (protection).
4. Eccrine (merocrine)
This is the most common. The secretions are very
watery that contain some electrolytes
Apocrine
This system produces a fatty secretion thus giving
away an odorous smell. This is located in the
inguinal and axillary regions of the body. It includes
the mammary glands as well as the creaminess
variants.
5. Onycholysis is a common medical condition
characterized by the painless detachment of
the nail from the nail bed, usually starting at
the tip and/or sides.
Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease in
which hair is lost from some or all areas of
the body, usually from the scalp, due to the
body's failure to recognize its own body cells
and subsequent destruction of its own tissue.
6. Alopecia areata, also known as spot baldness
Cicatricial alopecia refers to a group of rare
disorders that destroy hair follicles. The
follicles are replaced with scar tissue, causing
permanent hair loss.
Cicatricial alopecia, also called scarring
alopecia
7. Hypertrichosis is an abnormal amount of hair
growth over the body. also called Ambras
syndrome
Rosacea is a common skin condition that
causes redness and visible blood vessels in
your face.
Hypohidrosis is diminished sweating in
response to appropriate stimuli.
8. Anhidrosis is the inability to sweat
normally. When you don't sweat (perspire),
your body can't cool itself, which can lead to
overheating and sometimes to heatstroke — a
potentially fatal condition.
