The Motivation of Ralph Waldo Emerson in the Speech The American Scholar Nearly two hundred
years ago Ralph Waldo Emerson delivered a speech to a group of Scholars, it was his intention to
motivate and inspire. He expressed his beliefs in a way that was objectionable to some and
encouraging to others. Each man was given a chance to examine his life and the life's of their
predecessors. Emerson shaped his speech, and bent the words around in a beautiful collage; he
quickly established a mood that was felt throughout the room. Scholars understood that he had a
very important message to deliver and they prepared for an address like no other. The speech is
difficult and abstract; on the first read it takes you in a million directions ... Show more content on

Nature is an important resource to the scholar because through classification our minds are affected
in an innovative way, we begin to learn. "To the young mind everything is unique, it stands by itself"
as we mature we begin to organize the result is classification. When used with nature, classification
helps us build and broaden our view of the world. This holds true for me most when I take a walk
into the woods and experience something new; I tend to experience it in deeper and more
stimulating way. Emerson explained that the spirit is within the world, it's within every living person
and thing no matter what category we classify it under. Opening our mind allows outside influence
to shape us, it generates new ideas and creates a never–ending source of inspiration. There was a
time when I felt that my opinion was best, I became closed–in and my way of thinking was narrow.
When I was introduced to a group of people who motivated me I became creative and started to
explore my world. During this time I decided to go back to college and make a change in my life.
Their successors taught by the book passing down the same traditions and beliefs assuming there
institution would continue unchanged. Emerson wanted to express that dedication, honor, and trust
was truly important. Keeping to the old ways and methods were essential to the survival of

What Is An American Scholar, By Ralph Waldo Emerson
The two readings, What Is An American, by St. Jean de Crevecoeur, and, The American Scholar, by
Ralph Waldo Emerson, compare and contrast under the circumstances between nature and the
wilderness. These two texts outline the authors understanding of how nature and the wilderness
contribute to the American culture. Through Crevecoeur and Emerson's points of view, you are able
to distinguish the different ways in which their two views vary. Thus, Crevecoeur and Emerson's
views about nature back up their theories but are dissimilar in many ways. In Crevecoeur's, What Is
An American, he explains his views on nature. There is a distinct connection between human growth
and physical growth. He stated, "we are nothing but what we derive from the air we breathe, the
climate we inhabit, the government we obey, the system of religion we profess, and the nature of our
employment"(Crevecoeur 3). This proves that Crevecoeur believes that the people of the new land
need to flourish and develop with the land. They are nothing more then the land they live on and in
order to prosper they need to grow with the land and the society as it establishes its new culture.
When Crevecoeur states, "we are nothing but what we derive from the air we breathe, the climate
we inhabit"(3), he is mentioning how those who choose to live away from society, are worth less
than the people who live in the city. He believes that if you migrate to this new land then you should
contribute to society and become

Nexis
This data source is contained the large of news and business resource from International

When I searched in Nexis,I try to search information as same key words as Ebsco method. There

Anne Frank Conflict
What is the best way to respond to conflict? Is utilizing violence really the way to settle dispute?
Because of violence, numerous people did not survive brutal and persistent disagreements, but their
stories of courage still arouse millions today. One case of a motivation is Anne Frank's story, Anne
Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl, which depicts a firsthand account of her and her Jewish family's
life both some time before and after being forced into hiding. Another story that inspires millions, is
Dear Miss Breed, by Joanne Oppenheim. This book is compiled with real–life letters from children
in the Japanese internment camps, such as Poston Relocation Center. Finally, the speech
"Blood,Toil, Tears, and Sweat," given by Winston Churchill, Prime Minister, proposes his positivity
in winning the war against Germany. As proven by the sources, the best way to respond to conflict is
through having a positive viewpoint on the situation. One approach to respond to conflict is shown
in the thoughts and actions of Anne Frank. In the story, Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl,
Anne's solution to make the better of her situation was demonstrated. For instance, her diary entry,
dated Saturday, July 11, 1942, describing her living space at the Secret Annex, noticed, "Up to now
our bedroom, with its blank walls, was very bare [...] I was able to plaster the wall with pictures. It
looks much more cheerful" (Frank 19). This represents a particular action in which Anne made to

The American Scholar By Ralph Waldo Emerson
'The American Scholar' was a speech given to the Phi Kappa Beta Society by Ralph Waldo Emerson
in Cambridge on August 31st, 1837. At the time he gave the speech, it had only been 60 years since
the United States of America broke away from the British. The fledgling country underwent an
identity crisis. A distinctly American culture did not exist yet because the young nation still held
onto too many ties to Europe. Using his poetic skills, Emerson wanted to change that. With the
American Scholar essay, he wished to declare an intellectual Declaration of Independence from the
continent of Europe and create an ideal 'American Scholar' for the students of the time to strive
towards. The essay turned into a testament to American academics, and ... Show more content on

Another reason why I qualify for this position is that the world of nature constantly influences me.
Emerson states that "the ambitious soul sits down before each refractory fact; one after another,
reduces all strange constitutions, all new powers, to their class and law" (8). Obviously, he is
referring to science. I believe that civilized peoples have a duty to themselves to solve all of the
mysteries of nature that are possible to solve. Furthermore, whether I find that "geometry, a pure
abstraction of the human mind, is the measure of planetary motion," or I am the one who "finds
proportions and intelligible method through matter," (8), the importance of what I'm doing is that I
am expanding the realm of human knowledge. Because of the fact that nature influences me and so
many other scholars, it is my duty to further the human mission. Subsequently, I qualify because of
how I learn from books and the past. Emerson was adamantly disapproving of people who do not
think critically, stating that "Meek young men grow up in libraries believing it is their duty to accept
these views, which Cicero, which Locke, which Bacon, have given," stating that they are "forgetful
that Cicero, Locke, and Bacon were only young men in libraries, when they wrote these books,"
(13). Specifically, he is saying that if someone picks up a book and read through, that person then
must then think over what they read.

High School Involvement
Involvement
When he was taking high school classes as an eighth grader he did not gel with the other students
very well, but his overall high school experience was pretty good. He was only at the Berry
Academy for high school Geometry for one year before the university scrapped the entire program.
He started playing French Horn in 8th grade before starting high school and since then music has
been a part of his life. He'd been taking piano as a child so it gave him a head start on understanding
music. He played basketball at Berry Academy and with his church, but he stuck with band once he
go to high school. In his church basketball league, Varsity players were not allowed to play because
they wanted the atmosphere to be more relaxed and fun. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

an actuary firm to see if he would enjoy the work. Spring break of his junior Mr. House and his
mother did a tour of colleges in the south which included North Carolina State, Auburn, and Georgia
Tech. He remembers coming out of the student center and noticing that Tech did not look like it was
in the middle of a city. Through his senior year he was still considering actuary work or possibly
engineering, so he applied to NC State and tech knowing that he was in the Presidential Scholar's
program at both schools. His mother found the Presidential Scholars program and helped him apply
for it. For the president scholar's program all of his materials made it to Georgia Tech on time but
his essays had been lost in transit, so Georgia Tech gave him another chance to reapply. A couple of
weeks after the deadline Mr. House's original application had arrived at Georgia Tech mangled into

The American Scholar Rhetorical Analysis
In, "The American Scholar," Ralph Waldo Emerson talk about his displeasure about how societal
curriculum replicated person after another, in order to clarify that there are more efficient way to
become a successful scholar. In this essay, Emerson has made distinctions between the 'old world
thinking' of Europe and America. Emerson also thinks the American way should be new and
different from old word thinking. Along with this main point, Emerson believes an American
Scholar should be "Man Thinking," which means being more independent, and students should get
knowledge by their first hand experience through things such as nature, action, and books. In the
speech at Harvard University, Emerson's audience were a group of students from Harvard ... Show

At that time, American society were extremely influenced by old European culture, Emerson has
established a new way for young American scholar in order to change their mind of regard the
world. Passionate word choice could be a effective way because it can strike a chord with Emerson's
audience in time. Emerson has described " We do not meet for games of strength or skill, for the
recitation of histories, tragedies, and odes, like the ancient Greeks; for parliaments of love and
poesy, like the Troubadours; nor for the advancement of science, like our contemporaries in the
British and European capitals."(468). By using this example, Emerson strengthens his opinion which
is warning that people always get knowledge and information from European material. This
situation appeals to all scholar who study and work rely on others. With this example, Emerson also
uses repetition which including a lot of passionate words to engage his audience by showing the
feeling of the author mentions. "In this distribution of functions, the scholar is the delegated
intellect. In the right state, he is, Man Thinking. In the degenerate state, when the victim of society,
he tends to become a mere thinker, or, still worse, the parrot of others' thinking." (Emerson 470)
This example covering passionate and rhythmically word choice. In this example, we can see that
Emerson introduce his purpose which is "Man Thinking", in order to clarify his mean point that
individuals should not simply receive the knowledge of others. Emerson also believe as a scholar,
fraternity should absorb and recreate the knowledge understanding to build there own
credibility. The example, along with many others in Emerson's essay, speaks not only to students
from Harvard University but also gives example to warning all scholar. Therefore, Emerson also
said "Hence, instead of

Cesar Chavez He Showed Us The Way Analysis
Chavez's Push For Nonviolence "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere," Dr. Marin
Luther King Jr.. In Dr. King's life, he fought endlessly for what he believed in. He challenged his
followers to do the same when they were faced with an injustice too. During Cesar Chavez's article,
he follows the same mindset and beliefs as MLK, and shares the differences between violence and
nonviolence. In an excerpt from "He Showed Us The Way," Cesar Chavez fights for the promotion
of nonviolence by using the rhetorical triangle. In an effort to share the pain people have experience
when they are victims of violence, Chavez utilizes pathos. When it comes to violence, Chavez
doesn't stand down when they ask who the victims are. He says, "Examine history. Who gets killed
in the case of violent revolution? The poor, the workers." By striking pity and making the reader
reflect, Chavez grabs their attention and pulls them in and lets them relate if they know or have been
victims of violence. Cesar Chavez blames the armed forces for using weapons and machines for the
use of violence and calls them out for their ways of hurting rather than helping. In regards to this, he
adds, "To call men to arms with many promises, to ask them to give up their lives for a cause and
then not produce for them afterwards, is the most vicious type of oppression." Chavez's mocking off
the armed forces allows him to show that what they are doing isa vicious type of oppression, and is
not worth it or

Functional Prerequisites Essay
Some basic needs and requirement must be fulfilled by every human society for its survival. These
basic needs or necessities for existence of a society are known as functional prerequisites of the
society. The meaning of functional prerequisites is refer to the basic needs such as food, shelter and
dress. This basic need is require for every individual to live his life. This is because, without them,
human cannot remain alive. Functional prerequisites has some different between Islamic and

Islamic scholars which are physical prerequisite and spiritual prerequisite that it is religion while
according to Western sociology, they just only focus on physical prerequisites. We find some
indications about prerequisites in the Hadith of Prophet that Prophet says, " There is no right of Ibne
Adam ( son of Adam) without these three things: House: In which he lives, Cloth or Dress: with it
he covers his body and Food: A morsel of bread and water". In addition, the famous Hadith Mulla

things as prerequisites of man. Imam Ghazali also says about the basic needs of a man which is "
three things that a man compelling are food, shelter and dress and food is needed for life , dress to

Bell Hooks
Women, Writing and Language: Broadening the Definition of Dominance
In her essay entitled Teaching the New Worlds/ New Words, bell hooks focuses on exploring and
illuminating the close link between language and oppression from a feminist perspective. Recording
that language is a self–imposing kaleidoscope of productive challenges and assistances that is
impossible to bond or repress; she suggests that trying to circumscribe, it according to their interest
is precisely what oppressors do with it. Hooks adresses African–Americans' relationship to the
Standard English as a reality more than a mere case study, and illuminating that how their native
language, their most immense mean of bonding to each other had been taken away from them and ...

It can be seen that the poem clearly had an affection of hooks since the two texts have visibly
parallel mindsets. In fact, hooks highlights that parallelism by quoting a line from Rich: ''This is the
oppressor's language yet I need it to talk to you.''(1) recurrently. hooks expresses that the words of
Rich inherently possess the power to demand disobedience to domination through language and they
evoke a deep craving to reach out the colonized peoples, to internalize how they suffered, got killed,
made languageless, exiled, marginalized. Naturally, Rich does not make this call by a theoretical,
dull understanding but through summoning to sympathy, ability to feel the expelled through the
imagination derived from being the other: being the other is the catalyst of the unification that
awakens the oppressed and make them seize the language, reinvent and utilize it to celebrate their
differences; and synchronously, draw in the non–others to a unfamilliar landscape of language. Even
though the words of the other would occur to the non–other as alien, the effort on encouraging the
majority to walk on the land of the other's knowledge without a claim of mastery or superiority is
crucial for a multicultural society to offer life to a broader range of individuals. Also, this sense of
learning without a sense of supremacy is one significant

The, An American Classical Scholar
In the 20th century Milman Parry, an American classical scholar, began to draw on the work of the
Analysts and Unitarians to establish a hypothesis of an oral Homeric tradition which would prove to
be revolutionary. By observing South Slavic oral poetry first hand, he was able to prove that the
formulaic structure of Homeric epic was characteristic of oral composition. Due to the pressure of
composition in performance, as would have been the norm, he also demonstrated that repeated
words or phrases would have been fundamental in the composition of oral epic poetry. Whether
these took the form of noun–epithet formulas, larger formulaic phrases or entire scenes, the
mnemonic power which they created served to make epic poetry entirely possible. Parry defined
these formulas as "an expression regularly used, under the same metrical conditions, to express an
essential idea". Following from Lord's assessment of the first 15 lines of the Iliad, he estimated that
up to 90% of the total poem consisted of formulas or contained formulaic elements. While studying
those formulas comprising of a noun and fixed epithet, Parry called attention to the fact that they
almost always appeared directly after the mid–verse caesura or after the caesura in the fourth foot
and thus conveniently fell into the cola of the hexameter. Now the poet had a vast library of stock
phrases at their disposal which they could employ whenever the metre required. Such phrases
include ' ('swift–footed Achilles') and

Ralph Waldo Emerson's At American Scholar Outline
At American Scholar Outline Introduction: Ralph Waldo Emerson opens his essay by by first
recognizing the great literary year they have just had but the switching to a serious tone in
explaining how they have not all met just to have fun and play games but to bring to light the idea
that America cannot continue being apprentice "to the learning of other lands'' and cannot continue
to rely on "foreign harvist". Emersons purpose is to explain how Americans need to get away from
this idea and become more individualistic in that they should gather their own ideas separate from
Europe something similar to an American age of enlightenment. He also explains how this so called
literary renaissance or enlightenment should start with the scholarly people who have a love for
letters. Emerson introduces the American Scholar as not an actual individual person but more as an
idea or part that made up every person. He uses this concept of the American Scholar because
everyone their is scholarly so he hopes to explain how although they might all be smart or scholarly
they are only one part of this so called "one man" He later continues this idea in which he explains
how different things affect the scholarly side of a man. Emmerson next includes a fable in which he
explains how everyone makes up a part of "One man" and how long go this one man was split up
into each individual limb or part. Each part is now just their individual priest and scholar and
soldier, and these parts or limbs of

America 's Food Industry : An American Scholar And Writer
The way a country functions has a heavy impact on how citizens view aspects of life. This is evident
when it comes to the food industry. For years now America has tricked consumers into believing
that there is a wide selection of foods in grocery stores, but in reality, many of those products come
from the same place (Food Inc.). Unfortunately, many consumers are blinded by the image of
variety displayed in grocery stores to the point where that is actually what they believe. America's
food industry provides consumers with this "fantasy" where there are numerous farms with bright
green fields of grass with farmers that grow food with care, but there are approximately less than ten
farms that produce for the foods found in markets (Food ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Even on packaging, many labels will say that it is organically made, or the meat was grown
properly, but these labels only certify very minimal humane actions (Ethics). Many certifications
that state a product is grown organically are only slightly better than nonorganic farms, which can be
seen in chicken farms. Some organic chicken farms only have a slightly greater amount of space
compared to inorganic farms, and most farms still de–beak the chickens at a young age (Ethics). The
public is oblivious to the way the United States' grows its food because of the way it is advertised.
Farms will never show what occurs inside their structures because it would disgust and ruin the
images of food to consumers (Food Inc.). It is very unfortunate when people state that the food
industry should treat animals better even though they are ignorant to how most of America's food is
produced. By ignorantly eating the foods produced by most industries, people are being hypocritical
to their beliefs and slowly degrading their consciousness towards animals. Humans unknowingly
support animal cruelty and unfair labor through their food choices, but this is common in America's
culture.
An additional aspect of America's culture is the usage of faux foods. Besides the obvious substitutes
for meats or plates from foreign countries, our food industry introduces many techniques to
transform the foods in America. For instance,

American Scholar Katrina Wyman That Large Emitters Should...
This paper has been brought forward against American scholar Katrina Wyman that large emitters
should take responsibility for providing immigration rights to all climate change displaced person.
Wyman depicts climate change displaced persons identical to other vulnerable people that insist her
to say that there may be a moral obligation to assist financially and technologically to all vulnerable
people to relocate them in their home countries, but there is no obligation on emitter countries to
treat all climate change displaced persons except the small island's inhabitants as a distinct category
for immigration rights. A small island nation whose existence is severely threatened by climate
change can be considered for immigration right. At first glance, this stance of Wyman seems to be
opposite to her claims that it is yet not proven developed countries are solely responsible for climate
change. Hence, it is quite reasonable to ask what her grounds for saying so. The only reason she
gives is that belong to a state is a fundamental right for any human being, hence statelessness should
be prevented. In this article we challenge her conclusion by showing that even if relocation within
the country benefits persons, it is nevertheless wrongfully exploitative. In addition, displaced
persons choice to accept the conditions of their relocation, both as an exercise of their autonomy and
as an expression of their preferences, are not always morally significant. Rather we propose a

The American Scholar By Ralph Emerson
Imagine, someone waking up this morning conducting the normal routine; shower, drink coffee, and
watch the news. What will they see when they turn the television on? Protest, hate crimes, and stock

exact same routine only this time when they turn on the television they see a cure for cancer has
been found, 30,000 homeless people have been given a shelter, and the war is officially over. Which
scenario would the average person choose? The second one. If only there was a way! But wait, there
is! "The American Scholar" by Ralph Emerson is an essay that describes the process and necessary
traits of one man who could make a difference in the world. This man must become one with nature,
find a balance in literature and past, undergo labor and hardship and complete the appropriate duties
as outlined in the essay. Sounds easy, right? Think again! The theory of an American scholar could
be very beneficial, the concept, however, it is based off a very fine line that has been set by a single
man. Ichabod Crane and Brom Bones from "The Legend of Sleepy Hallow" by Irving Washington
will be used in the following paragraphs to show just how difficult it is for one man to achieve the
proper qualifications of an American Scholar but when combined could conquer many problems. In

The Causes Of German Book Burnings
All throughout history groups have burnt books for many different reasons. To silence opposing
views, to take control, and many more. However, more often than not, the cause of those book
burnings is because of our differences. Humans have a hard time accepting that others might not
believe the same ideas as themselves, that we all have different opinions. In America, people have
more freedom when it comes to deciding who they believe in and what they follow. However, in
other countries it can be dangerous to follow their own beliefs. Differences cause people to fear and
hate cultures that are different from their own which in turn causes them to burn books that belong
to those different cultures to keep that fear away. Germany has often been the main topic when it

The Conceptual Schema Of Women
Women are seen powerless in many instances and Marilyn Frye details the accounts where women
are viewed as second to men in "To see and Be Seen." Frye uses a metaphysics approach to better
understand how people come to power. She gives a metaphysical understanding of how the world
has been determined by people of power, which throughout history has been men. Men have been in
authority throughout history and have come up with society's conceptual schema. Frye alludes to
people in power don't want to see people who are submissive. Men fit into the conceptual schema,
women are excluded but are allowed in the schema in certain ways and lesbians are not included.
Lesbians are seen as unnatural and are not recognized in the schema. Their perspective on society is
not taken into account, whereas women are recognized but their own perspective on society is
completely erased.
Men in charge do not identify women or lesbian's experiences and view women as a mystery. The
conceptual schema lead women to view society as men do, but lesbians do not view the world
through men's perspective. Suppressing a groups perspective excluded them from reality. Men are
dominant and women are dominated. Frye mentions Sarah Hoagland's paper saying, "In the
conceptual schemes of phallocracies... there is no such thing as a lesbian. This puts a lesbian in the
interesting and peculiar position of being something that does not exist, and this position is a
singular vantage point with respect to the

Who Is Emerson's Essay The American Scholar
The contrasts between ideas, experiences, separation, and society are some of the key points of
Emerson's essay "The American Scholar." Throughout the essay, Emerson presents ideas regarding
various mindsets, collective societies, experience based knowledge, and the distribution of
knowledge. These ideas, while interesting to theorize about and ponder over, tend to be dull on their
own. However, the well–structured use of a scholarly and dignified tone helps to promote these
ideas effectively without the added effect of boring the audience. The tone of the essay is also
influential to the delivery of Emerson's ideas.
Yet, the primary issue with this tone is the ease of creating prominent contradictory statements.
Emerson does this often in the essay. As an example, in paragraph four Emerson is describing the
structure of "Man" as a collective representation or embodiment of society. Later, he contradicts this
statement multiple times in the passage by saying that the individual scholar should embody certain
elements. This is not the idea Emerson had originally stated about "Man," but rather an idea about
how an individual scholar can think similarly to a collective "Man." This contradicts the entire point
of his collective thought argument. If the scholar is not part of "Man," then the scholar is outside of
the collective thought of society. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One specific example is found in classroom groups in schools. Some students prefer to work alone
and represent delegated intellects. Some work in groups, where they can draw from the ideas and
experiences of others in a "Man Thinking" system. When ideas have to be presented or arguments
made, these "delegated intellects" tend to argue with "Man Thinking," which creates opposition.
Over time these arguments tend to shift toward "Man

Professor Martin offers a fresh perspective on Progressivism, arguing that its spirit can be best seen
in the daily struggles of ordinary people. In a discussion with Professors Scharff and Miller, the
struggles of Native Americans, Asian Americans, and African Americans are placed in the context of
the traditional white Progressive movement.
How does Prof. Martin's view treatment of Progressivism differ from that of other historians?
African American scholar and activist WEB DuBois forecasted that the problem of the 20th century
was the problem of the color line. He wants to argue that the Progressive spirit can be clearly seen in
the group based struggles of blacks to realize the hopes and dreams, notwithstanding often
overwhelming obstacles. A fundamental aspect of Progressivism was the continuing freedom
struggles of blacks. After Reconstruction, the place of blacks was a separate and restricted world.
How did white prejudices cause hardships for Blacks and Indians?
After Reconstruction, the place of blacks was a separate and restricted world. Lynching was aimed
at keeping blacks in their place. Extralegal and legal violence went along with economic
suppression. A type of neo–slavery developed including sharecropping that kept blacks shackled.
Whites created segregation systems known as Jim Crow. Segregation

The Importance Of Love In The Nonviolent Movement
So, what is love? Love can mean many things to people. However, is there only one definition?
There are many different types of love you can have. For example, having love for your pet can be
completely different compared to having love for your family members or spouse, which begs the
question; how important is love in the nonviolence movement? A very important person involved
with the nonviolent movement is Martin Luther King Jr. I will be explaining his thoughts, and views
on love. I will also be explaining the thoughts of Gandhi and his prospective on love. The arguments
I will be making in this paper are, is love a necessity needed to fight alongside nonviolent
protesters? Also, will loving our enemies really help the fight in what we believe in against our
enemies? There are many aspects to nonviolence, but according to Martin Luther King love is one of
the most important.
Dr. Martin Luther King has always used his way of explaining love with hate. He says that hate
scars the soul. In other words, hating our enemies is hurting us in a way. Yes, it is very hard to turn
the other cheek to a person that is being very hateful and disrespectful towards you. However, I
believe he is saying do not hate the person, hate their actions. One thing I definitely agree with King
is when he said "Loving our enemies is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a
friend" in his writing of Loving Your Enemies. I agree with him because this point does make a lot
of sense. If

Statement of Purpose
From the early days of my life, I set goals beyond those of my peers. I did my bachelors in one of
the top public schools in Afghanistan and graduated with a remarkable GPA. I was interested in both
managing and teaching at the academic institutions. In order to use my time effectively and pursue
my ambition, I decided to get a diploma in business administration while doing my bachelor's and to
enhance my understanding of management. After getting my bachelor's degree, I decided to
challenge myself and pursue a master's degree in applied linguistics in the U.S. Therefore, I applied
to get a Fulbright scholarship which is the most elite scholarships in the world. A total of 4000
participants applied from all over the Afghanistan in 2011. It seemed almost impossible to get the
scholarship among thousands of participants; after several interviews, TOEFL tests and GRE, they
have selected only the top 40 students and I was one of them.
I came to the U.S. in 2012 to get my master's degree in applied linguistics from Old Dominion
University. As a Fulbright scholar, the faculty's expectations were different from me. I was expected
to do great in every course that I enrolled. Meanwhile, I was interested in research and statistics
aspects of my degree, therefore, I took a Research Methods class which taught me how to do

Using Logos In The American Scholar By Waldo Emerson
Throughout "The American Scholar", Waldo Emerson uses logos to argue his point very clearly. He
steps you through his thought process and simplifies ideas down to a point to where is seems
unnecessary. He greatly uses logic to show his point very clearly and motivate his audience to
change their thinking about the subject.
Emerson's main strategy of using logos was to thoroughly explain steps through different logical
scenarios. Through his essay, he mentions nature, books, actions and how we learn from them. He
steps us through his thought process by starting with how "the first importance of the influences
upon the mind is that of nature" (Emerson,2) With this statement, he is trying convey how the very
first thing that we learn from, the first thing that influences our thinking is nature. He talks about
how in order for someone to learn from nature, "He must settle its value in his mind" (Emerson, 2).
Before you are able to learn something or take in information from a source, you must first oone you
mind to these new ideas. The biggest idea that can be learned from nature is that we are all one, we
are not divided. Emerson argues that "To the young mind everything is individual, stands by itself"
(Emerson, 2)Today we are all put into different jobs and separated from being a community. In
nature, everything is connected, nothing is separated from the rest of things. Emerson argues how
people need to see how "roots running under ground whereby contrary and remote things

The American Scholar : A Speech To The Phi Kappa Beta...
The American Scholar 'The American Scholar' was a speech given to the Phi Kappa Beta Society by
Ralph Waldo Emerson at Cambridge on August 31st, 1837. It has only been 60 years since the
United States of America broke away from the British, and the fledgling country underwent an
identity crisis. A distinctly American culture did not exist yet because the young nation still held
onto too many ties to Europe. Emerson wanted to change that. With the American Scholar essay, he
wished to declare an intellectual Declaration of Independence from the continent of Europe and
create an ideal 'American Scholar' for the students of the time to strive towards. The essay turned

Another reason why I qualify for this position is that I am constantly influenced by the world around
me. Emerson states that "the ambitious soul sits down before each refractory fact; one after another,
reduces all strange constitutions, all new powers, to their class and law" (8.) Obviously, he is
referring to science.
Third, I qualify because of how I
learn from books and the past. Emerson is adamantly disapproving of people who do not think
critically, stating that "Meek young men grow up in libraries believing it is their duty to accept these
views, which Cicero, which Locke, which Bacon, have given," stating that they are "forgetful that
Cicero, Locke, and Bacon were only young men in libraries, when they wrote these books," (13.)
What he means here is that if you pick up a book and read through, you must then think over what
you read. Everytime I read a book, I try my hardest to critically think

Asian Scholar System Vs American Culture Analysis
In my opinion, the American and Asian scholar systems have their own share of problems, but to say
that one should be modeled after the other is insane. Both of these regions are so in depth with their
culture, that it would be highly improbable that either of them would change. First, the article says
that Asian culture succeeds with struggle, but who is to say that is a good thing? Second, in the
conversations with the kids and the mothers, it seems as though there is parental pressure rather than
a kid's natural drive to do something. Third, what is the proper way to test someone's intelligence?
Throughout the column, an immense emphasis is made on struggle. Whether it is an acceptable or
an awful thing for youth to go through, both civilizations have a different point of view. Asian
cultures typically view struggle as a way to break through and achieve. Whereas the American
scholar system associates struggle with lack of intellect. Struggle is thought to many as negative
reinforcement, while it can be efficient for learning, it may backfire on the social and emotional
skills. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

than Herbert's. Both of these writers were ultimately hitting at the same line of reasoning but the
way each approached it varied significantly. Herbert seemed to have a lot of anger directed right
towards my generation and I, I believe he is actually going against what Friedman said by
"assigning blame rather than assuming responsibility." I'm not saying that my generation should
escape the fault for this increasing issue but it's just not possible for us to be the sole reason, we've
got to dig deeper than blame. In Friedman's article he uses facts to reason his thoughts, he doesn't
just blame Lady Gaga or Snooki like Herbert did. Though each writer approached the issue
differently, each shared a common notion; the youth in America needs to change When I first read
Herbert and Friedman's articles I was instantly brought back to Emerson's "American Scholar."
While these arguments were addressing entirely different issues, they all motivate the same proposal
of change. In 1837 Emerson was persuading a nation to separate from their comfortable ways and to
become scholarly Americans that would enhance their country. Emerson's idea was successful and is

Oneness in Walden, Nature and American Scholar Essay
Oneness in Walden, Nature and American Scholar
Some of the most prominent works which express a relationship between the individual and nature
are undoubtedly Walden by Henry David Thoreau and the essays written by Ralph Waldo Emerson,
specifically Nature and The American Scholar. In each of these works, an idea of wholeness,
"oneness," with nature is expressed. Thoreau and Emerson both believe that man, in order to live a
full, happy life, must live in harmony with nature. Both writers share several ideas as to how this
oneness with nature can be achieved, and its significance.
Emerson, in his Scholar address, states that nature is the most important influence on man and his
thinking. Because in nature there is no beginning ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Emerson and Thoreau both urge people to go out and experience life for themselves instead of
merely reading about it. Reading is necessary for growth, but one should not depend on it to change
their lives; for that, they have to live simply in nature. In this way, to both authors, books seem to be
a direct hindrance to achieving the wholeness that nature offers because reading keeps man from
experiencing nature himself. Once they experience life's richness through nature, they are better able
to develop spiritually and experience the divine.
Emerson believed that man's mind is creative; he does not need only receive a sensory perception of
God, but can actually create a consciousness of God. In creating this consciousness, man becomes
god–like. In this way, man can experience God, know God, not just know of Him, and realize a way
of life that is better (more god–like) than his own. Emerson believed that this ideal, this
experiencing the divine, was possible through building a harmonious relationship with nature.
Thoreau saw this ideal way of life in nature as well. He believed that the key to this spiritually rich,
ideal existence was to simplify one's life. If one were to give up all unnecessary and materialistic
ties, and live with the bare necessities (fuel, clothing, shelter, food) then one may spend more time
concentrating on developing spiritually.

Are Sports Programs For Children And Teenagers Too Intense?
Are sports programs for children and teenagers too intense? Youth sports are being questioned by
the public as being too intense. One of the reasons for this is that sport specialization is up to a
record high 25 percent(Sirs). This means that one in every four people are only playing one sport
which can lead to injuries and psychological issues. Another issue is injuries in youth sports. Most
specifically football is being researched intensely for head injuries that can hurt the children for the
rest of their lives. Even though some believe that youth sport programs should be less intense they
still believe that all sports are helping the youth grow up to be leaders for the next generation.
Although many believe youth sports programs ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of the major reasons why adult think youth sports are being too intense is that sports
specialization is at a record high. Although this is true it is still only at 25 percent. Sports
specialization should not happen until 15 or 16 according to a harvard study(Sirs). If 25 percent of
people are specializing in one sports that mean 75 percent of youth are not focusing on one sport. So
even though some youth are specializing in one sport he majority of of youth players do not focus
on one sport but rather play multiple sports. Jane Cray, a parent whose child specialises in hockey,
says that the main reason she lets her son, who is 10, specialize is she believes that this will help him
earn an athletic scholarship to a major college. This is not true. There was a study done by harvard
in which they found out that specializing does not make you a better athlete or better at that one
sport. Playing multiple sports when youth athletes are young helps develop to the athletes athletic
potential quicker than they would. The second reason adults believe youth sports are too intense is
because of the growing increase of injuries. The argument I would make against that almost double
kids are actually playing sports now. If more youth are playing the sport then it's reasonable to think
that there would be more injuries. There is also more research being done now then ever trying to
prevent sport injuries. One organization called

Having to live a life of two languages leads to an insecure identity. Rodriguez argues that learning
both languages and using them rather than avoiding one, leads to a better sense of identity and
freedom. Thus, his intended audience are people who are of higher education, scholars, and
educators. Both himself, and the audience have shared values which entail: "independent thinking,
self–knowledge", education, "commitment to the affairs of the world", and scholarship and intellect.
Rodriguez convinces the audience to seriously consider his claim through effective appeals to ethos
and pathos. Ethos is developed in the area of authority by personal anecdotes and in the area of
credibility by shared values. Pathos is effectively evoked via experiences he had that make the
audience more likely to pause and consider his claim.
First, Rodriguez develops ethos in the area of authority, which is the author's ability to demonstrate a
command over a subject matter and to offer an informed persona. Although Rodriguez initially
struggled with his adjustment into the American society and speaking English, he did not let that
limit his capabilities of being a successful in the classroom. "Rodriguez's article appeared in The
American Scholar magazine at a critical time in the debate over bilingual education models"

The American Scholar By Ralph Waldo Emmerson
Transcendentalism 1. Stress placed on intuition, not logic: "The American Scholar" by Ralph Waldo
Emmerson "In the right state he is man thinking," states Ralph Waldo Emmerson. This view of
intuition is expounded upon in his paper "The American Scholar." He talks about the division of
man into men, but he also discusses the collection of all men into one Man. Viewing a man as
someone who does not fit into a single category, such as a farmer, office worker, or lawyer, but as a
completely prepared individual being, he understands that something is wrong with society's view of
the individual. Stated in his paper, an idea about society's role in the alteration of Man's destiny is
discussed. Emmerson believes that society has divided Man so that individuals are broken from their
human form. Likening it to separating parts of the body, he states that this kind of "new" man is like
a lone body part, incomplete without the rest of the body. He says, "The state of society is one in
which the members have suffered amputation from the trunk, and strut about so many walking
monsters – a good finger, a neck, a stomach, and elbow, but never a man." In his essay, he
summarizes his view of the state of humanity. Additionally, he stresses the importance of intuition,
not logic. Intuition, he believes, can transcend man into the being he was supposed to be. Without
the subdivision placed by society, be believes that all people will be able to contribute on a greater

The Pros And Cons Of Resistance Without Violence
Resistance Without Violence Throughout history the unjust components of government have
produced opposition from the people underneath it. At times people would resort to violent action to
fix the wrongs of the civil governments of their country, but several social leaders brought people
together to do this in a more caring and peaceful manor. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Mohandas K.
Gandhi, and Henry David Thoreau all assembled citizens of their respective countries in resistance
to the wrongs of their governments. While these three leaders used no violence in their campaigns
for justice, they all had different opinions on the approach of the opposition as well as the reasoning
behind the resistance. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While this stands evident, the courses of action deviate in the completion of the movements. King
had a focus on immediate demonstration to create equality in treatment of other people and to
completely eliminate injustice from the world. He believed that some laws under a civil government
needed to be demonstrated against because they were unjust and restricting on freedom. "Injustice
anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere" (King 282). By comparison, Thoreau relayed a similar
message of fighting the civil government but remaining civil with treating everyone like friends and
with respect. He stressed that the government needed to earn respect from the people rather than
having the need of the people to earn such treatment for themselves. Without the friendly treatment
no respect is earned, so the people need to work to have cooperation. "I saw that the state was half–
witted...that it did not know its friends from its foes, and I lost all my remaining respect for it, and
pitied it" (Thoreau 86) ... When one pities their own government, there is clear proof that change is
needed, and Thoreau could see this. In both the writings of MLK and Thoreau it is easy to see that
both parties took a role in the opposition towards the civil government's laws with a friendly

Essay about The Degradation of Women in American Scholar
The Degradation of Women in American Scholar
In "The American Scholar," Ralph Waldo Emerson characterizes the nature of the American scholar
in three categories: nature, books, and action. The scholar is one who nature mystifies, because one
must be engrossed with nature before he can appreciate it. In nature, man learns to tie things
together; trees sprout from roots, leaves grow on trees, and so on. Man learns how to classify the
things in nature, which simplifies things in his mind (section I).
Books, to the scholar, should only be used as a link to gathering information about the past. For
these books do not give a definite factual account of the past; they provide information for man to

He must fill each and every moment of the day. The scholar should work different jobs and learn
new professions. Then he will learn new languages in which to illustrate his thoughts. The scholar
should teach his knowledge to men, teach them facts versus appearances. To do this, the scholar
must trust himself, never willing to give in to popular opinion. He should never seek money or
power, or let either sway his judgement. His actions are a reflection of his character, and "character
is higher than intellect" (Section III).
Furthermore, the nature of the scholar is the gender of man. Emerson makes a division of the "man
thinking" and the woman. He writes, "I have heard it said that the clergy . . . the scholars of their
day––are addressed as women" (Section III). In the context of this quote, Emerson is saying that
clergymen were the scholars of the past, and that society degraded them. Emerson chooses to use
women as the degraded image. Therefore, women cannot be scholars since he uses them as this
negative image. Multiplied by the fact that throughout this piece, Emerson constantly uses the terms
"the man," "man thinking," and the pronouns "his," and "himself." Herein lies the hypocrisy of
Emerson, which by his own words displays how he is not a scholar, a man thinking.
Emerson says that the scholar should take all the information from society

still holds on to the fact everything is okay as if she rewrites Robbie's and Cecilia's relationship a
happy ending versus a tragic ending "the lovers survive and flourish"(371). By changing the ending
Briony tries to extinguish her grief that she affected Robbie's and Cecilia's life and torn apart the
Tallis family. Briony is learning how to survive without her innocence.
Another perception is of Robbie Turner a family friend of the Tallis. He is of lower social class than
the Tallis. During the time of Lola's rape, Robbie was out looking for Lola's brothers who ran away.
But as Briony had cast Robbie as a villain in her story she was determined to make him a villain

  • 1. The Motivation of Ralph Waldo Emerson in the Speech The... The Motivation of Ralph Waldo Emerson in the Speech The American Scholar Nearly two hundred years ago Ralph Waldo Emerson delivered a speech to a group of Scholars, it was his intention to motivate and inspire. He expressed his beliefs in a way that was objectionable to some and encouraging to others. Each man was given a chance to examine his life and the life's of their predecessors. Emerson shaped his speech, and bent the words around in a beautiful collage; he quickly established a mood that was felt throughout the room. Scholars understood that he had a very important message to deliver and they prepared for an address like no other. The speech is difficult and abstract; on the first read it takes you in a million directions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Nature is an important resource to the scholar because through classification our minds are affected in an innovative way, we begin to learn. "To the young mind everything is unique, it stands by itself" as we mature we begin to organize the result is classification. When used with nature, classification helps us build and broaden our view of the world. This holds true for me most when I take a walk into the woods and experience something new; I tend to experience it in deeper and more stimulating way. Emerson explained that the spirit is within the world, it's within every living person and thing no matter what category we classify it under. Opening our mind allows outside influence to shape us, it generates new ideas and creates a never–ending source of inspiration. There was a time when I felt that my opinion was best, I became closed–in and my way of thinking was narrow. When I was introduced to a group of people who motivated me I became creative and started to explore my world. During this time I decided to go back to college and make a change in my life. Their successors taught by the book passing down the same traditions and beliefs assuming there institution would continue unchanged. Emerson wanted to express that dedication, honor, and trust was truly important. Keeping to the old ways and methods were essential to the survival of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. What Is An American Scholar, By Ralph Waldo Emerson The two readings, What Is An American, by St. Jean de Crevecoeur, and, The American Scholar, by Ralph Waldo Emerson, compare and contrast under the circumstances between nature and the wilderness. These two texts outline the authors understanding of how nature and the wilderness contribute to the American culture. Through Crevecoeur and Emerson's points of view, you are able to distinguish the different ways in which their two views vary. Thus, Crevecoeur and Emerson's views about nature back up their theories but are dissimilar in many ways. In Crevecoeur's, What Is An American, he explains his views on nature. There is a distinct connection between human growth and physical growth. He stated, "we are nothing but what we derive from the air we breathe, the climate we inhabit, the government we obey, the system of religion we profess, and the nature of our employment"(Crevecoeur 3). This proves that Crevecoeur believes that the people of the new land need to flourish and develop with the land. They are nothing more then the land they live on and in order to prosper they need to grow with the land and the society as it establishes its new culture. When Crevecoeur states, "we are nothing but what we derive from the air we breathe, the climate we inhabit"(3), he is mentioning how those who choose to live away from society, are worth less than the people who live in the city. He believes that if you migrate to this new land then you should contribute to society and become ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Anne Frank Conflict What is the best way to respond to conflict? Is utilizing violence really the way to settle dispute? Because of violence, numerous people did not survive brutal and persistent disagreements, but their stories of courage still arouse millions today. One case of a motivation is Anne Frank's story, Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl, which depicts a firsthand account of her and her Jewish family's life both some time before and after being forced into hiding. Another story that inspires millions, is Dear Miss Breed, by Joanne Oppenheim. This book is compiled with real–life letters from children in the Japanese internment camps, such as Poston Relocation Center. Finally, the speech "Blood,Toil, Tears, and Sweat," given by Winston Churchill, Prime Minister, proposes his positivity in winning the war against Germany. As proven by the sources, the best way to respond to conflict is through having a positive viewpoint on the situation. One approach to respond to conflict is shown in the thoughts and actions of Anne Frank. In the story, Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl, Anne's solution to make the better of her situation was demonstrated. For instance, her diary entry, dated Saturday, July 11, 1942, describing her living space at the Secret Annex, noticed, "Up to now our bedroom, with its blank walls, was very bare [...] I was able to plaster the wall with pictures. It looks much more cheerful" (Frank 19). This represents a particular action in which Anne made to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. The American Scholar By Ralph Waldo Emerson 'The American Scholar' was a speech given to the Phi Kappa Beta Society by Ralph Waldo Emerson in Cambridge on August 31st, 1837. At the time he gave the speech, it had only been 60 years since the United States of America broke away from the British. The fledgling country underwent an identity crisis. A distinctly American culture did not exist yet because the young nation still held onto too many ties to Europe. Using his poetic skills, Emerson wanted to change that. With the American Scholar essay, he wished to declare an intellectual Declaration of Independence from the continent of Europe and create an ideal 'American Scholar' for the students of the time to strive towards. The essay turned into a testament to American academics, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another reason why I qualify for this position is that the world of nature constantly influences me. Emerson states that "the ambitious soul sits down before each refractory fact; one after another, reduces all strange constitutions, all new powers, to their class and law" (8). Obviously, he is referring to science. I believe that civilized peoples have a duty to themselves to solve all of the mysteries of nature that are possible to solve. Furthermore, whether I find that "geometry, a pure abstraction of the human mind, is the measure of planetary motion," or I am the one who "finds proportions and intelligible method through matter," (8), the importance of what I'm doing is that I am expanding the realm of human knowledge. Because of the fact that nature influences me and so many other scholars, it is my duty to further the human mission. Subsequently, I qualify because of how I learn from books and the past. Emerson was adamantly disapproving of people who do not think critically, stating that "Meek young men grow up in libraries believing it is their duty to accept these views, which Cicero, which Locke, which Bacon, have given," stating that they are "forgetful that Cicero, Locke, and Bacon were only young men in libraries, when they wrote these books," (13). Specifically, he is saying that if someone picks up a book and read through, that person then must then think over what they read. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

High School Involvement Involvement When he was taking high school classes as an eighth grader he did not gel with the other students very well, but his overall high school experience was pretty good. He was only at the Berry Academy for high school Geometry for one year before the university scrapped the entire program. He started playing French Horn in 8th grade before starting high school and since then music has been a part of his life. He'd been taking piano as a child so it gave him a head start on understanding music. He played basketball at Berry Academy and with his church, but he stuck with band once he go to high school. Through high school he was good with math, and was looking for a job that involved math and money, so he decided to be an accountant. Between his junior and senior year, his dad took him to an actuary firm to see if he would enjoy the work. Spring break of his junior Mr. House and his mother did a tour of colleges in the south which included North Carolina State, Auburn, and Georgia Tech. He remembers coming out of the student center and noticing that Tech did not look like it was in the middle of a city. Through his senior year he was still considering actuary work or possibly engineering, so he applied to NC State and tech knowing that he was in the Presidential Scholar's program at both schools. His mother found the Presidential Scholars program and helped him apply for it. For the president scholar's program all of his materials made it to Georgia Tech on time but his essays had been lost in transit, so Georgia Tech gave him another chance to reapply. In this essay, Emerson has made distinctions between the 'old world thinking' of Europe and America. Emerson also thinks the American way should be new and different from old word thinking. Along with this main point, Emerson believes an American Scholar should be "Man Thinking," which means being more independent, and students should get knowledge by their first hand experience through things such as nature, action, and books. Passionate word choice could be a effective way because it can strike a chord with Emerson's audience in time. Emerson has described " We do not meet for games of strength or skill, for the recitation of histories, tragedies, and odes, like the ancient Greeks; for parliaments of love and poesy, like the Troubadours; nor for the advancement of science, like our contemporaries in the British and European capitals."(468). By using this example, Emerson strengthens his opinion which is warning that people always get knowledge and information from European material. This situation appeals to all scholar who study and work rely on others. With this example, Emerson also uses repetition which including a lot of passionate words to engage his audience by showing the feeling of the author mentions. "In this distribution of functions, the scholar is the delegated intellect. In the right state, he is, Man Thinking. In the degenerate state, when the victim of society, he tends to become a mere thinker, or, still worse, the parrot of others' thinking." (Emerson 470) This example covering passionate and rhythmically word choice. In this example, we can see that Emerson introduce his purpose which is "Man Thinking", in order to clarify his mean point that individuals should not simply receive the knowledge of others. In Dr. King's life, he fought endlessly for what he believed in. He challenged his followers to do the same when they were faced with an injustice too. During Cesar Chavez's article, he follows the same mindset and beliefs as MLK, and shares the differences between violence and nonviolence. In an excerpt from "He Showed Us The Way," Cesar Chavez fights for the promotion of nonviolence by using the rhetorical triangle. In an effort to share the pain people have experience when they are victims of violence, Chavez utilizes pathos. When it comes to violence, Chavez doesn't stand down when they ask who the victims are. He says, "Examine history. Who gets killed in the case of violent revolution? The poor, the workers." By striking pity and making the reader reflect, Chavez grabs their attention and pulls them in and lets them relate if they know or have been victims of violence. Cesar Chavez blames the armed forces for using weapons and machines for the use of violence and calls them out for their ways of hurting rather than helping. In regards to this, he adds, "To call men to arms with many promises, to ask them to give up their lives for a cause and then not produce for them afterwards, is the most vicious type of oppression." Chavez's mocking off the armed forces allows him to show that what they are doing isa vicious type of oppression, and is not worth it or ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Bell Hooks Women, Writing and Language: Broadening the Definition of Dominance In her essay entitled Teaching the New Worlds/ New Words, bell hooks focuses on exploring and illuminating the close link between language and oppression from a feminist perspective. In fact, hooks highlights that parallelism by quoting a line from Rich: ''This is the oppressor's language yet I need it to talk to you.''(1) recurrently. hooks expresses that the words of Rich inherently possess the power to demand disobedience to domination through language and they evoke a deep craving to reach out the colonized peoples, to internalize how they suffered, got killed, made languageless, exiled, marginalized. Naturally, Rich does not make this call by a theoretical, dull understanding but through summoning to sympathy, ability to feel the expelled through the imagination derived from being the other: being the other is the catalyst of the unification that awakens the oppressed and make them seize the language, reinvent and utilize it to celebrate their differences; and synchronously, draw in the non–others to a unfamilliar landscape of language. Even though the words of the other would occur to the non–other as alien, the effort on encouraging the majority to walk on the land of the other's knowledge without a claim of mastery or superiority is crucial for a multicultural society to offer life to a broader range of individuals. • 21. The, An American Classical Scholar In the 20th century Milman Parry, an American classical scholar, began to draw on the work of the Analysts and Unitarians to establish a hypothesis of an oral Homeric tradition which would prove to be revolutionary. By observing South Slavic oral poetry first hand, he was able to prove that the formulaic structure of Homeric epic was characteristic of oral composition. Due to the pressure of composition in performance, as would have been the norm, he also demonstrated that repeated words or phrases would have been fundamental in the composition of oral epic poetry. Whether these took the form of noun–epithet formulas, larger formulaic phrases or entire scenes, the mnemonic power which they created served to make epic poetry entirely possible. Parry defined these formulas as "an expression regularly used, under the same metrical conditions, to express an essential idea". Following from Lord's assessment of the first 15 lines of the Iliad, he estimated that up to 90% of the total poem consisted of formulas or contained formulaic elements. While studying those formulas comprising of a noun and fixed epithet, Parry called attention to the fact that they almost always appeared directly after the mid–verse caesura or after the caesura in the fourth foot and thus conveniently fell into the cola of the hexameter. Now the poet had a vast library of stock phrases at their disposal which they could employ whenever the metre required. Such phrases include ' ('swift–footed Achilles') and ... Ralph Waldo Emerson's At American Scholar Outline At American Scholar Outline Introduction: Ralph Waldo Emerson opens his essay by by first recognizing the great literary year they have just had but the switching to a serious tone in explaining how they have not all met just to have fun and play games but to bring to light the idea that America cannot continue being apprentice "to the learning of other lands'' and cannot continue to rely on "foreign harvist". Emersons purpose is to explain how Americans need to get away from this idea and become more individualistic in that they should gather their own ideas separate from Europe something similar to an American age of enlightenment. He also explains how this so called literary renaissance or enlightenment should start with the scholarly people who have a love for letters. Emerson introduces the American Scholar as not an actual individual person but more as an idea or part that made up every person. He uses this concept of the American Scholar because everyone their is scholarly so he hopes to explain how although they might all be smart or scholarly they are only one part of this so called "one man" He later continues this idea in which he explains how different things affect the scholarly side of a man. Emmerson next includes a fable in which he explains how everyone makes up a part of "One man" and how long go this one man was split up into each individual limb or part. This is evident when it comes to the food industry. For years now America has tricked consumers into believing that there is a wide selection of foods in grocery stores, but in reality, many of those products come from the same place (Food Inc.). Unfortunately, many consumers are blinded by the image of variety displayed in grocery stores to the point where that is actually what they believe. Even on packaging, many labels will say that it is organically made, or the meat was grown properly, but these labels only certify very minimal humane actions (Ethics). Many certifications that state a product is grown organically are only slightly better than nonorganic farms, which can be seen in chicken farms. Some organic chicken farms only have a slightly greater amount of space compared to inorganic farms, and most farms still de–beak the chickens at a young age (Ethics). The public is oblivious to the way the United States' grows its food because of the way it is advertised. Farms will never show what occurs inside their structures because it would disgust and ruin the images of food to consumers (Food Inc.). It is very unfortunate when people state that the food industry should treat animals better even though they are ignorant to how most of America's food is produced. By ignorantly eating the foods produced by most industries, people are being hypocritical to their beliefs and slowly degrading their consciousness towards animals. Humans unknowingly support animal cruelty and unfair labor through their food choices, but this is common in America's culture. An additional aspect of America's culture is the usage of faux foods. Besides the obvious substitutes for meats or plates from foreign countries, our food industry introduces many techniques to transform the foods in America. For instance, ... This paper has been brought forward against American scholar Katrina Wyman that large emitters should take responsibility for providing immigration rights to all climate change displaced person. Wyman depicts climate change displaced persons identical to other vulnerable people that insist her to say that there may be a moral obligation to assist financially and technologically to all vulnerable people to relocate them in their home countries, but there is no obligation on emitter countries to treat all climate change displaced persons except the small island's inhabitants as a distinct category for immigration rights. A small island nation whose existence is severely threatened by climate change can be considered for immigration right. At first glance, this stance of Wyman seems to be opposite to her claims that it is yet not proven developed countries are solely responsible for climate change. Hence, it is quite reasonable to ask what her grounds for saying so. The only reason she gives is that belong to a state is a fundamental right for any human being, hence statelessness should be prevented. In this article we challenge her conclusion by showing that even if relocation within the country benefits persons, it is nevertheless wrongfully exploitative. In addition, displaced persons choice to accept the conditions of their relocation, both as an exercise of their autonomy and as an expression of their preferences, are not always morally significant. • 37. The Causes Of German Book Burnings All throughout history groups have burnt books for many different reasons. To silence opposing views, to take control, and many more. However, more often than not, the cause of those book burnings is because of our differences. Humans have a hard time accepting that others might not believe the same ideas as themselves, that we all have different opinions. In America, people have more freedom when it comes to deciding who they believe in and what they follow. However, in other countries it can be dangerous to follow their own beliefs. Differences cause people to fear and hate cultures that are different from their own which in turn causes them to burn books that belong to those different cultures to keep that fear away. Germany has often been the main topic when it comes to hate of another religion, however, fear also played a big role in the Holocaust which led to the burnings of thousands of books written by those belonging to an "inferior" race. The Germans often claim that they were cleansing themselves of the ideas of other races and making the German language and culture pure. However, the fact that they burned books written by German authors proves that they weren't just ridding their culture of other races, they were ridding themselves of those who had different opinions. One such example of a massive German book burning was held on May 10th, 1933 (United States Holocaust Memorial Museum). German university students decided to burn 25,000 books that did ... Frye uses a metaphysics approach to better understand how people come to power. She gives a metaphysical understanding of how the world has been determined by people of power, which throughout history has been men. Men have been in authority throughout history and have come up with society's conceptual schema. Frye alludes to people in power don't want to see people who are submissive. Men fit into the conceptual schema, women are excluded but are allowed in the schema in certain ways and lesbians are not included. Lesbians are seen as unnatural and are not recognized in the schema. Their perspective on society is not taken into account, whereas women are recognized but their own perspective on society is completely erased. Men in charge do not identify women or lesbian's experiences and view women as a mystery. The conceptual schema lead women to view society as men do, but lesbians do not view the world through men's perspective. Suppressing a groups perspective excluded them from reality. Men are dominant and women are dominated. Frye mentions Sarah Hoagland's paper saying, "In the conceptual schemes of phallocracies... there is no such thing as a lesbian. This puts a lesbian in the interesting and peculiar position of being something that does not exist, and this position is a singular vantage point with respect to the ... • 41. Who Is Emerson's Essay The American Scholar The contrasts between ideas, experiences, separation, and society are some of the key points of Emerson's essay "The American Scholar." Throughout the essay, Emerson presents ideas regarding various mindsets, collective societies, experience based knowledge, and the distribution of knowledge. These ideas, while interesting to theorize about and ponder over, tend to be dull on their own. However, the well–structured use of a scholarly and dignified tone helps to promote these ideas effectively without the added effect of boring the audience. The tone of the essay is also influential to the delivery of Emerson's ideas. Yet, the primary issue with this tone is the ease of creating prominent contradictory statements. Emerson does this often in the essay. As an example, in paragraph four Emerson is describing the structure of "Man" as a collective representation or embodiment of society. Later, he contradicts this statement multiple times in the passage by saying that the individual scholar should embody certain elements. This is not the idea Emerson had originally stated about "Man," but rather an idea about how an individual scholar can think similarly to a collective "Man." This contradicts the entire point of his collective thought argument. If the scholar is not part of "Man," then the scholar is outside of the collective thought of society. ... There are many different types of love you can have. For example, having love for your pet can be completely different compared to having love for your family members or spouse, which begs the question; how important is love in the nonviolence movement? A very important person involved with the nonviolent movement is Martin Luther King Jr. I will be explaining his thoughts, and views on love. I will also be explaining the thoughts of Gandhi and his prospective on love. The arguments I will be making in this paper are, is love a necessity needed to fight alongside nonviolent protesters? Also, will loving our enemies really help the fight in what we believe in against our enemies? There are many aspects to nonviolence, but according to Martin Luther King love is one of the most important. Dr. Martin Luther King has always used his way of explaining love with hate. He steps you through his thought process and simplifies ideas down to a point to where is seems unnecessary. He greatly uses logic to show his point very clearly and motivate his audience to change their thinking about the subject. Emerson's main strategy of using logos was to thoroughly explain steps through different logical scenarios. Through his essay, he mentions nature, books, actions and how we learn from them. He steps us through his thought process by starting with how "the first importance of the influences upon the mind is that of nature" (Emerson,2) With this statement, he is trying convey how the very first thing that we learn from, the first thing that influences our thinking is nature. He talks about how in order for someone to learn from nature, "He must settle its value in his mind" (Emerson, 2). Before you are able to learn something or take in information from a source, you must first oone you mind to these new ideas. The biggest idea that can be learned from nature is that we are all one, we are not divided. Emerson argues that "To the young mind everything is individual, stands by itself" (Emerson, 2)Today we are all put into different jobs and separated from being a community. It has only been 60 years since the United States of America broke away from the British, and the fledgling country underwent an identity crisis. A distinctly American culture did not exist yet because the young nation still held onto too many ties to Europe. Emerson wanted to change that. Another reason why I qualify for this position is that I am constantly influenced by the world around me. Emerson states that "the ambitious soul sits down before each refractory fact; one after another, reduces all strange constitutions, all new powers, to their class and law" (8.) Obviously, he is referring to science. Third, I qualify because of how I learn from books and the past. Emerson is adamantly disapproving of people who do not think critically, stating that "Meek young men grow up in libraries believing it is their duty to accept these views, which Cicero, which Locke, which Bacon, have given," stating that they are "forgetful that Cicero, Locke, and Bacon were only young men in libraries, when they wrote these books," (13.) What he means here is that if you pick up a book and read through, you must then think over what you read. Everytime I read a book, I try my hardest to critically think ... • 53. Asian Scholar System Vs American Culture Analysis In my opinion, the American and Asian scholar systems have their own share of problems, but to say that one should be modeled after the other is insane. Both of these regions are so in depth with their culture, that it would be highly improbable that either of them would change. First, the article says that Asian culture succeeds with struggle, but who is to say that is a good thing? Second, in the conversations with the kids and the mothers, it seems as though there is parental pressure rather than a kid's natural drive to do something. Third, what is the proper way to test someone's intelligence? Throughout the column, an immense emphasis is made on struggle. Whether it is an acceptable or an awful thing for youth to go through, both civilizations have a different point of view. Asian cultures typically view struggle as a way to break through and achieve. Whereas the American scholar system associates struggle with lack of intellect. Struggle is thought to many as negative reinforcement, while it can be efficient for learning, it may backfire on the social and emotional skills. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Response to "The American Scholar" Essay example Julia Mitri English 31 Novick 18 September 2011 Ralph Waldo Emerson's "The American Scholar" Post– Reading Response In Ralph Waldo Emerson's 1837 address to the Phi Beta Kappa Society at Harvard, called "The American Scholar", he makes clear his thoughts and ideas on the European cultural and cerebral influence on America. Emerson wanted to get across that American scholars needed to create their own independent American literature and academic world, separate from European history. Emerson uses tone and style to further convey his ideas to the public. The tone that seems constant throughout Emerson's entire address is a confrontational one. I'd have to say that I do agree with Friedman's argument much more than Herbert's. Both of these writers were ultimately hitting at the same line of reasoning but the way each approached it varied significantly. Herbert seemed to have a lot of anger directed right towards my generation and I, I believe he is actually going against what Friedman said by "assigning blame rather than assuming responsibility." I'm not saying that my generation should escape the fault for this increasing issue but it's just not possible for us to be the sole reason, we've got to dig deeper than blame. In Friedman's article he uses facts to reason his thoughts, he doesn't just blame Lady Gaga or Snooki like Herbert did. Though each writer approached the issue differently, each shared a common notion; the youth in America needs to change When I first read Herbert and Friedman's articles I was instantly brought back to Emerson's "American Scholar." While these arguments were addressing entirely different issues, they all motivate the same proposal of change. In 1837 Emerson was persuading a nation to separate from their comfortable ways and to become scholarly Americans that would enhance their country. Emerson's idea was successful and is the base of what America still stands on. Today, we are back to where we were 137 years ago, trying to motivate our country to take initiative and become American Scholars. I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 59. Oneness in Walden, Nature and American Scholar Essay Oneness in Walden, Nature and American Scholar Some of the most prominent works which express a relationship between the individual and nature are undoubtedly Walden by Henry David Thoreau and the essays written by Ralph Waldo Emerson, specifically Nature and The American Scholar. In each of these works, an idea of wholeness, "oneness," with nature is expressed. Thoreau and Emerson both believe that man, in order to live a full, happy life, must live in harmony with nature. Both writers share several ideas as to how this oneness with nature can be achieved, and its significance. Emerson, in his Scholar address, states that nature is the most important influence on man and his thinking. Because in nature there is no beginning ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Emerson and Thoreau both urge people to go out and experience life for themselves instead of merely reading about it. Reading is necessary for growth, but one should not depend on it to change their lives; for that, they have to live simply in nature. In this way, to both authors, books seem to be a direct hindrance to achieving the wholeness that nature offers because reading keeps man from experiencing nature himself. Once they experience life's richness through nature, they are better able to develop spiritually and experience the divine. Emerson believed that man's mind is creative; he does not need only receive a sensory perception of God, but can actually create a consciousness of God. In creating this consciousness, man becomes god–like. In this way, man can experience God, know God, not just know of Him, and realize a way of life that is better (more god–like) than his own. Emerson believed that this ideal, this experiencing the divine, was possible through building a harmonious relationship with nature. Thoreau saw this ideal way of life in nature as well. He believed that the key to this spiritually rich, ideal existence was to simplify one's life. If one were to give up all unnecessary and materialistic ties, and live with the bare necessities (fuel, clothing, shelter, food) then one may spend more time concentrating on developing spiritually. ... • 61. Are Sports Programs For Children And Teenagers Too Intense? Are sports programs for children and teenagers too intense? Youth sports are being questioned by the public as being too intense. One of the reasons for this is that sport specialization is up to a record high 25 percent(Sirs). This means that one in every four people are only playing one sport which can lead to injuries and psychological issues. Another issue is injuries in youth sports. Most specifically football is being researched intensely for head injuries that can hurt the children for the rest of their lives. Even though some believe that youth sport programs should be less intense they still believe that all sports are helping the youth grow up to be leaders for the next generation. Although many believe youth sports programs ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of the major reasons why adult think youth sports are being too intense is that sports specialization is at a record high. Although this is true it is still only at 25 percent. Sports specialization should not happen until 15 or 16 according to a harvard study(Sirs). If 25 percent of people are specializing in one sports that mean 75 percent of youth are not focusing on one sport. So even though some youth are specializing in one sport he majority of of youth players do not focus on one sport but rather play multiple sports. Jane Cray, a parent whose child specialises in hockey, says that the main reason she lets her son, who is 10, specialize is she believes that this will help him earn an athletic scholarship to a major college. This is not true. There was a study done by harvard in which they found out that specializing does not make you a better athlete or better at that one sport. Playing multiple sports when youth athletes are young helps develop to the athletes athletic potential quicker than they would. The second reason adults believe youth sports are too intense is because of the growing increase of injuries. The argument I would make against that almost double kids are actually playing sports now. If more youth are playing the sport then it's reasonable to think that there would be more injuries. There is also more research being done now then ever trying to prevent sport injuries. One organization called ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Bilingual education is the use of two different languages in classroom instruction. According to the Encyclopedia of Children's Health, and many other researchers, "languages are learned the easiest during a child's youngest years. Therefore, when a child is growing up in a bilingual home or is receiving bilingual education, can easily speak both languages. Having to live a life of two languages leads to an insecure identity. Rodriguez argues that learning both languages and using them rather than avoiding one, leads to a better sense of identity and freedom. Thus, his intended audience are people who are of higher education, scholars, and educators. Both himself, and the audience have shared values which entail: "independent thinking, self–knowledge", education, "commitment to the affairs of the world", and scholarship and intellect. Rodriguez convinces the audience to seriously consider his claim through effective appeals to ethos and pathos. Ethos is developed in the area of authority by personal anecdotes and in the area of credibility by shared values. Pathos is effectively evoked via experiences he had that make the audience more likely to pause and consider his claim. First, Rodriguez develops ethos in the area of authority, which is the author's ability to demonstrate a command over a subject matter and to offer an informed persona. Although Rodriguez initially struggled with his adjustment into the American society and speaking English, he did not let that limit his capabilities of being a successful in the classroom. • 65. The American Scholar By Ralph Waldo Emmerson Transcendentalism 1. Stress placed on intuition, not logic: "The American Scholar" by Ralph Waldo Emmerson "In the right state he is man thinking," states Ralph Waldo Emmerson. This view of intuition is expounded upon in his paper "The American Scholar." He talks about the division of man into men, but he also discusses the collection of all men into one Man. Viewing a man as someone who does not fit into a single category, such as a farmer, office worker, or lawyer, but as a completely prepared individual being, he understands that something is wrong with society's view of the individual. Stated in his paper, an idea about society's role in the alteration of Man's destiny is discussed. Emmerson believes that society has divided Man so that individuals are broken from their human form. Likening it to separating parts of the body, he states that this kind of "new" man is like a lone body part, incomplete without the rest of the body. He says, "The state of society is one in which the members have suffered amputation from the trunk, and strut about so many walking monsters – a good finger, a neck, a stomach, and elbow, but never a man." In his essay, he summarizes his view of the state of humanity. Additionally, he stresses the importance of intuition, not logic. Intuition, he believes, can transcend man into the being he was supposed to be. At times people would resort to violent action to fix the wrongs of the civil governments of their country, but several social leaders brought people together to do this in a more caring and peaceful manor. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Mohandas K. Gandhi, and Henry David Thoreau all assembled citizens of their respective countries in resistance to the wrongs of their governments. While these three leaders used no violence in their campaigns for justice, they all had different opinions on the approach of the opposition as well as the reasoning behind the resistance. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While this stands evident, the courses of action deviate in the completion of the movements. King had a focus on immediate demonstration to create equality in treatment of other people and to completely eliminate injustice from the world. He believed that some laws under a civil government needed to be demonstrated against because they were unjust and restricting on freedom. "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere" (King 282). By comparison, Thoreau relayed a similar message of fighting the civil government but remaining civil with treating everyone like friends and with respect. He stressed that the government needed to earn respect from the people rather than having the need of the people to earn such treatment for themselves. Without the friendly treatment no respect is earned, so the people need to work to have cooperation. "I saw that the state was half– witted...that it did not know its friends from its foes, and I lost all my remaining respect for it, and pitied it" (Thoreau 86) ... • 69. Essay about The Degradation of Women in American Scholar The Degradation of Women in American Scholar In "The American Scholar," Ralph Waldo Emerson characterizes the nature of the American scholar in three categories: nature, books, and action. The scholar is one who nature mystifies, because one must be engrossed with nature before he can appreciate it. In nature, man learns to tie things together; trees sprout from roots, leaves grow on trees, and so on. Man learns how to classify the things in nature, which simplifies things in his mind (section I). Books, to the scholar, should only be used as a link to gathering information about the past. He must fill each and every moment of the day. The scholar should work different jobs and learn new professions. Then he will learn new languages in which to illustrate his thoughts. The scholar should teach his knowledge to men, teach them facts versus appearances. To do this, the scholar must trust himself, never willing to give in to popular opinion. He should never seek money or power, or let either sway his judgement. His actions are a reflection of his character, and "character is higher than intellect" (Section III). Furthermore, the nature of the scholar is the gender of man. Emerson makes a division of the "man thinking" and the woman. He writes, "I have heard it said that the clergy . . . the scholars of their day––are addressed as women" (Section III). In the context of this quote, Emerson is saying that clergymen were the scholars of the past, and that society degraded them. Emerson chooses to use women as the degraded image. Therefore, women cannot be scholars since he uses them as this negative image. Multiplied by the fact that throughout this piece, Emerson constantly uses the terms "the man," "man thinking," and the pronouns "his," and "himself." Herein lies the hypocrisy of Emerson, which by his own words displays how he is not a scholar, a man thinking. Emerson says that the scholar should take all the information from society ... As an Egyptian–American scholar on Islamic feminism and Islam, Ahmed has published a number of highly informative works addressing the complexities of feminism in Muslim life. Ahmed's previous works include Women and Gender in Islam. (1993) explores the role women and gender play from the Pre–Islamic Era in the Middle East through to the modern world that we know today. The issue of veiling is an ongoing debate and one in which invokes a great emotion among many people. Her latest work explores the history of the fall and rise of the Muslim veil in the erudite study 'A Quiet Revolution'. The study logically details the changing attitudes to veiling in Egypt in the 1940's and 50's through to its resurgence in the 1970's and then its impact in the US post 9/11. Written from Ahmed's own perspective as a feminist and as a non–wearer of the veil at a time when it was seen as quite natural not to wear a hijab. The reason for the study arises from Ahmed's move to Cambridge in the US and her amazement at seeing a public gathering of Muslim women of which "were in hijab [which] was still exceedingly rare." (1). In summary, the research leads to a complete turnaround of events in Ahmed's thoughts that the wearing of the veil is a symbol of oppression to the times and a backwards step of gaining equality.
