How Did The Pope Lose His Power
Power is said to be the authority to act. Throughout the years of growth and strong leadership, the
Roman Church began to suffer its grip on the faithfulness of the European people. This downfall
was inevitable due to the strict policies of the Popes that had tremendous power. During the
centuries, the papacy suffered a major decline in authority due to several events and movements.
These include, the incident between King Philip IV and Boniface III, the Great Schism and post–
Black Death. In the end, I strongly agree that the Pope's power had declined in relation to all the
events and movements that have happened in the past to affect it severely. During the 10th century,
there have been conflict between the Pope and the king for powers. The most ... Show more content

In response to all this chaos, Philip accused the Pope of committing crimes against man, nature, and
God. Pope Boniface didn't like the accusation, so he retreated to Avignon. The Pope's movements of
going back to Avignon were a weakness shown because the people of Rome felt very fearful and
anxious with the idea of the Pope overseeing the citizens from a different city. In the perspective of
the people, they didn't believe in the Pope to make wise and crucial decisions for Rome. Things
came to an end when King Philip IV made a powerful order of denouncing the Pope. Later, King
Philip gathered an important council meeting of the Church and talked about the allegations of Pope
Boniface, which includes simony, bribery, and more. To counterattack King Philip, Boniface came
up with a papal bull to banish the king, but it wasn't enough. The last attack happens when Philip
demands an arrest on Boniface, but failed. Finally, Pope Boniface VIII died as he was viewed as a
crude leader by the people of Rome. In fact, many will say that he abused his powers when he
moved in at the Avignon. I think this was one major event that

Pope Sixtus 2 Research Paper
Pope Sixtus II, who took over after St. Stephen in 257, is best known for partaking in one of the
most famous pieces of art in Western history, known as Sistine Madonna. Sixtus was having trouble
with some African and Asian churches regarding Baptism. He received letters from St. Dionysus of
Alexandria, which advised him to remain easygoing and try to disregard the other practices that
were taking place. After adhering to his advice, he was referred to as a "good and peaceable priest."
In 257, afraid of many big empires such as the Persians, Valerian allotted his first decree to the
Christians. He attempted to seize rich Christian lands and distribute them to balance out the empire.
Many of the clergy members were dedicated, and as a result

Pope Francis Controversy
On the New York Times opinion page Room for Debate, a question was pondered "How Radical is
Pope Francis?" The debate centers on the issue of whether or not Pope Francis is focused on
spreading Catholic beliefs or on dispersing a liberal point of view. A full version of the text written
on September 17, 2015 can be found at the following link

debated by two scholars, Megan J. Clark and Randy Boyagoda and a journalist Michael Brendan

However, I believe that people selectively choose what they wish to hear and observe, and just
because the Pope has articulated or conveyed something that people agree with, does not brand him
a conservative or a liberal. Americans today tend to believe that the papacy's standpoint is connected
with the Republican Party. With the election of Pope Francis this view point has begun to change,
and has multitudes of people questioning whether the Catholic Church is aligned with a political
party, and if so which one? Although a radical pope may seem trivial, it is in fact crucial in terms of
today's concerns over political leaders own morals. Whether government officials view the pope as a
political figure and leader this issue is important to the politicians who adopt the Pope's ideals to
support their own claims. Ultimately, this country and others are governed by men and women each
of whom has a religious stance. As a result, it is almost impossible for governing figure heads to rule
without the ideals and morals guided by their culture's theology. However, the question put forth
"How Radical is Pope Francis?" requires further examination. In the United States, there is a
separation of church and state, but is Pope Francis aligned with a political party or do Liberals and
Conservatives alike align their political agendas with his theological

Pope Silverius: Pope During The Dark Ages
Pope Silverius was a Pope during the Dark Ages in Europe, his date of birth is unknown, and he
died in 537 AD after being banished on an island off of the coast. Silverius was the son of Pope
Hormisdas, and was born before his father joined the Priesthood. Silverius was the Pope for a little
more than a year, and was able to alienate the Empress Theodora, the wife of Justinian a Byzantine
Emperor known for his reform of civil law. He was forced out of the papacy by a Byzantinum
general because Silverius upsetted Theodora. Then, Silverius was wrongly accused of assisting the
Goths attack the Byzantine Empire, and was exiled on the Island of Palmaria. Centuries later, he was
appointed as a venerated Saint.
Pope Silverius had a very uneventful childhood, he was thought to be attracted to the Church at a
very young age. Another opinion also speculated that he was forced to become a Christian because
his father, Hormisdas, became a priest, and later on became a Pope; in fact, Hormisdas is also a
Saint. In the modern day world, a Pope is not allowed to have children; in the sixth century it was
not uncommon to find Priests and Popes with children, or even married. The Canon Law is an
ancient law that states rules for church officials. In the fourth book of the collection contains ...

Most of the time in his papacy was consumed with arguing with Theodora over a heresy. Perhaps
this was his largest contribution to the church, he proved that monophysitism was a false heresy. In
addition, he did not take away from the Church, and he did not start any unneeded wars. However,
he was taken out of office by brute force, because of this Rome was besieged, and was also banished
which was not good publicity for the Church. Overall, he fought against a false belief that he
successfully proved wrong. He was a good Pope because he fought against a false belief and did not

The Papacy Of The Pope
The Papacy
The Papacy, which is the power the Pope has, and the hierarchy he is the head of, has a long history
filled with corruption, greed, but also good. The Pope is the head of the Catholic Church, controller
of the faith, and yet throughout history, Popes have not been all that faithful, but terribly corrupt and
sinful. So if it was so sinful, then why is the Papacy still so prominent in today's society? In the
world today, over 1.2 million people are Roman Catholics and supposedly because of their faith all
of them respect and follow the Pope at the head of the church. Even today the Pope still holds
authority, and the Papacy has morphed into a beacon of goodwill that simply shows the goodness of
mankind. So why still do people disparage him as "demonic" or "the antichrist"? To know this let us
truly start at the beginning.
Every story has a beginning, and this one begins in the 1st century. When Peter died, the Christians
were at a loss as to what they should do; some took the route of building a hierarchical church
whose head would be called the Bishop of Rome. In 467A.D. the dark ages began after the fall of
Rome. Literacy, science, art, all began to suffer as people struggled to survive and the only people to
preserve any of these studies was the Catholic Church. Their clergy were some of the only people
able to read and write, and because of this, they tirelessly worked to preserve the Bible and other
literature and spread both stories and the gospel to

Impact Of Pope John 23
Pope John XXIII was a revolutionist and who, despite his short journey as Pope, made significant
contributions to the entire Christian denomination. Focusing on what unites rather than divides, he is
recognised as a major reformer of the 20th century. Pope John XXIII strived to work in the areas of
ecumenical, doctrinal, social and moral aspects and as a result his contributions have shaped
Christianity and his ongoing legacy impacts on the lives of Christian adherents on a global scale.
A significant area where Pope John XXIII contributed was the establishment of the Second Vatican
Council. This council had the main focus of revolutionising the functions of the church while still
retaining the foundational Christian ideology. "The Church ... Show more content on

The Obligation Of Pope Francis To The Catholic Church
Pope Francis has condemned the corrupt people who donate "dirty money" to the Catholic Church,
saying their tainted donations are not wanted.
On Wednesday, Pope Francis addressed the crowd at the St. Peter's Square and referenced the book
of Isaiah in the Bible. The pontiff said God does not want offerings given by hands tainted by blood,
according to the Catholic News Agency.
"Bring no more vain offerings; incense is an abomination to me...when you spread forth your hands,
I will hide my eyes from you," Pope Francis quoted from the Bible. "Even though you make many
prayers, I will not listen; your hands are full of blood."

Between the age of twelve and seventeen there were a lot of applications for pope to study. During
the process it weakened his health, and he developed tuberculosis of the spine which left him

he prescribed a diet and exercise. Under this treatment the boy recovered his strength and spirits.

The Pope And The Vatican

Vatican Change the Pope? is an article written by Robert Draper and published by national

revert the Catholic Church to what it was meant to be, a church for the people. Dr. Fouberg's book
Human Geography: People, Place, and Culture dives into the Catholic Church, and the cultural and
geographic significance it has on the human population. Religion is a fragment of an extensive list
of human identities, it is part culture, part of a learned beliefs and values that held by individuals

the largest diffusion for its cultural hearth of any of the major world religions (Fouberg, 209).
Christianity follows the same cultural hearth as Judaism until the New Testament where Jesus Christ
is introduced as the son of God (Fouberg, 217). Christianity split into two separate Christian sects in
1054 CE, one of them being the Roman Catholic Church (Fouberg, 217). As Fouberg states in

Medieval Kings and Popes Essay
The Pope was the title give to the head of the church, to which he was changed with the religious
care taking of the clergy and other believers. For military aid and expansion, early popes looked to
medieval kings like Clovis of the Franks, but by the time of Charlemagne's coronation by Pope Leo
III, it became questionable whether the pope or the king was the higher authority. After the fall of
the Roman Empire, Europe was decentralized with the development of feudalism, and this allowed
the only unifying establishment, the Church, to become more powerful. Though the Pope and
medieval kings originally held separate roles, with the rise of feudalism the popes gained greater
political power despite challenges from kings and lay investiture. ... Show more content on

During this time, feudalism developed. In the feudal system, weak kings granted lands to greater
lords in return for military aid. Greater lords in turn granted lands to lesser lords below them. These
nobles governed all people, including clergyman to whom they granted a 'fief" of land. When a
clergyman, who were to pay their loyalty to the pope, became a vassal, or under the charge of a lord
who granted him land, it gave the nobles and kings power. But because the papacy had the unified
support of the larger peasant class and there were no strong kings to challenge him, the pope gained
greater secular power than the nobility in addition to religious influence. Not only could he banish
people from the Church through religious excommunication, but he could establish secular decrees
like the Peace and Truce of God, which limited the appropriate locations and days for war. Secular
powers such as these were previously reserved to kings, and illustrate that the pope due to the
weakening of kings in the feudal system, held greater authority. Originally medieval popes and
kings held separate roles: the pope was a religious caretaker and the king was a secular head.
Beginning with the baptism of Clovis of the Franks in 481 A.D., a mutual alliance grew between the
two powers, and through

Pope Francis has captured the attention of the world with his simple ways, humbleness, and love for
the poor and sick.
After reading Pope Francis' new book, "The Name Of God Is Mercy". It's a written in the form of
conversation with the Vatican reporter and writer Andrea Tornielli. It's worth reading whatever one's
belief system. At the intellectual level, it gives a sense of which direction one of the largest religious
groups in the world is heading, and at the human level, it gives an expression of something unifying.
In the book, the Pope has as relentless focus on mercy and forgiveness and indeed has called this
year, the Holy Year of Mercy. Critical to this is his reframing of sin. Rather than seeing it as
something to be despised, he sees it as an opportunity for mercy and forgiveness to manifest itself.
In religious terms, he writes about how the original sin meant humanity is forever wounded. This
means we can distinguish right from wrong, but we will inevitably falter. The mercy of God is such
that he sacrificed his Son, Jesus, to redeem humanity for its sins. And precisely because there is sin,

Why Was The Pope Called For The Crusades
THESIS: The leaders of the Roman Catholic Church proposed The Crusades as a mission for
religious integrity but they were actually intended as a way to gain power for the Pope..
Consequently, over time, even the Crusaders, who initially believed in the religious mission, shifted
their motivation from religious devotion to greed and vengeance.
The Pope called for the Crusades to manipulate the people of the West. The Crusades were not the
result of religious devotion, rather, they were the only way the Roman Catholic Church could
effectively achieve what they wanted. To start, there was no clear religious control,"...If the Pope
could muster a large army against the enemies of Christianity, his claim to be leader of Christian
society in the West would be strengthened." If the Pope called for the Crusades, he would gain the
authority and the respect he wanted to control the population. Additionally, the Churches did not
have a high level of integrity. "One goal was to stamp out immorality: get the priests to stop
marrying, stop selling ecclesiastical offices, live by their vows." The Pope was trying to use ... Show

enrage the crowd and turn them against the Muslims. He used their hate to encourage greed and

Summary: Pope Paul And The People
Pope Paul and The People
I watched an ABC News 20/20 television show titled Pope Paul and The People, moderated by news
anchor David Muir. They held a virtual audience inside the Vatican in Italy, broadcasting to US
cities: Chicago, Los Angeles, and Texas. Everyday people in the audience included students, parents
with their children, the homeless, and nuns. Some of them talked to the pontiff about: problems
affecting their lives, how he thought they could find their purpose, the importance of his message,
and he thanked those of goodwill. The first person to speak from the audience was a teenage female
with vitilligo, a skin condition that causes whitish patches. She had difficulty fitting in with her
peers, and she isolated herself. This made her feel lonely. When she sang songs, she felt ... Show

Her father had been murdered when she was a small child. I never heard my mother talk about the
sacrifices that she made for her family. Despite the sacrifices and challenges that she made, she went
on to have a full life. Thus, my mother was my greatest role model of what I could do in my own
life. A female child also talked about immigrating, with her mother, from Mexico. They were
seeking a better life and their journey took them 26 days. Like many other immigrants, they were
poor and had little to eat in their homeland. They wanted a decent way of life and the right to the
freedom that America offered. The pontiff said that there is nothing wrong when people are seeking
a better life. This should be a right of all people. The pope spoke compassionately about that being a
responsibility for humanity. For example, most of the people in the US have ancestors who were
immigrants or slaves. They worked to improve their lives and those of their families; they sought the
American dream. This is not a foreign idea to America and should not be hard to

A Rhetorical Analysis Of Pope Urban II
Pope Urban II delivers a touching an inspiring speech that is meant to highlight the importance of
trusting in God in one attempt to overcome their challenges. The pope delivers the message at a time
when there is turmoil and the country had been subjected to chaos to misunderstanding by the kings
and rulers at the time. In his speech the religious leader employs a prayer in their attempt to
convince their followers to embark of the dangerous journey and rescue what belongs to them based
on the motivation of bible scriptures.
One motivation that the pope uses in luring Christians into the idea of fighting in the holy land is
based in the fact that God has given them power unlike other nations to defeat their enemies (Jan).
In his speech, Urban II also mentions their uniqueness in the ability to possess courage, and humility
means that their God favors them and they do not need to worry as they plan to tackle and overcome
the enemy in war. In the motivational speech, the pope further reminds the city members that they
need to be aware that God is with them and they should not worry in the battle (Jan). ... Show more

The Pope As A Spiritual Place
The Pope is the bishop of Rome and the head of the Roman Catholic Church. The Pope is one of the
most important religious aspect to Christians from all around the world. This means that he
represents Jesus Christ's love and care for every individual. That is why the Pope 's priority is to get
to know people, understand how they live, listen to their interests while sharing hardships and joy.
In addition, "the Pope is also the Unifier of the People of God." The Pope travels all around the
world, from the richest to the poorest countries to meet with people, learn their stories, and to bless
them. But most importantly, "the Pope's roles are known as Biblical, Dogmatic Development,
Church Government and Papal Primacy Teaching Office." The beginning of the Church was a
unique and creative act of Christ, it's a place that brings people together where experiences are
brought to life and shared with one another. The Church is a spiritual place, a community of
believers who all share one common thing; having faith. But in order for the church to function
properly it needs constant guidance to show people its mission. Therefore, Christ perceived the need
that someone should take control and guide the church's mission in the right direction and also to
have a primacy over his Church. So, He laid this authority on Peter until he would return and take
control himself. But the authority or office didn't stay on Peter necessarily, there came a time that he

Pope John Paul 2 Research Paper
At first I found all the literature, articles, websites and even video recordings somewhat confusing.
As I read one after the other, watch media clips, I found they were contradicting one another but this
is what I took away from it all and the reason why I believe Pope John Paul II is worthy of
Sainthood.
Even in childhood, he believed that the tragedies he faced early in life was the will of God. This led
him to his greater calling in the Catholic church. Pope John Paul II did not set out his papal career to
become a saint, nevertheless, he demonstrated saintly attributes. It was his devotion to the Catholic
life, God and the desire to help those in need that aided him in his journey towards sainthood.
It was Pope John Paul II who had faith in his capacity and his status as a public figure to do
something transformative. To some, he was also known as a man of many contradictions but his
life's work speaks for itself. He broke down barriers and lessened the divide between Catholicism

He believed that man cannot be good without God. He impacted the world in a way where it will

resistance to communism – a movement that would help bring down the iron curtain; inspiration of
priestly vocations, the Pope of the family – Pope Francis called him this at his canonization. A title
which he wanted to be remembered for; Catechism of the Catholic Church.
Lastly, Pope John Paul II was a remarkably holy man, a man of deep prayer who set a great example

Conflict Between Emperors And Popes
Based on the video lessons, what were the reasons behind the conflicts between the emperors and
the popes during this period: The main reason for strife between the popes and the holy Roman
emperors starts with Fredrick Barbarossa realizing that the French and English Kings were
beginning to wield a lot of power and that there was way too much decentralization going on in his
Empire. Fredrick begins by trying to take the Northern Lombard states in Italy for their wealth. The
Lombard states however are not really fans of being absorbed into the HRE, and the first seed of
discord between the Emperor and Pope is sown when the Pope sides with the Lombard cities.

to join the crusades by making them believe that it is their destiny given to them by God.
b. "an accursed race, a race utterly alienated by God" In this statement Pope Urban is describing the

"if you are hindered by love of children, parents and wives, remember what the Lord says in the

removing the "hindrance" of relationships. Loosely translated into modern day language it may
sound something like this: "if you love your family more than god, you are not worthy of god's love

d. "She seeks therefore and desires to be liberated" This is trying to convince the people listening to

Why Are The Popes Important In The Middle Ages
Within the Middle Ages, the church became the most influential and important force for the
European society. As the central governments of Europe grew weak, the church rose in strength. In
result came an ever lasting battle between the two. Popes were in control of spiritual matters, and
the emperor or king were in charge of political affairs. During the Middle Ages, the line in between
spiritual and political was clearly not bold enough. The Popes consistently tried to sway the king's
decisions and actions, which led to the king battling for power. Religion was a gigantic part of ones
life in this time period. They truly felt that by following god, heaven would be their destination after

created a court system as well, if one were to break these laws. A punishment for breaking the law

The Pros And Cons Of Pope Gregory IV
Around the last half of the 11th century, Pope Gregory VII not only enacted moral alterations within
the Church that had continuous effects, but the Pope also clashed with a political leader Henry IV.
This indicates that these changes are defined as a revolution because a revolution is a sudden and
vast change that has lasting effects. Although most of the prominent modifications enacted by Pope
Gregory VII altered the ethical lives of Church leaders still remain important today, the doctrines
established by the Pope and the emerging power of the papacy radically transformed the political
relationship of the Catholic Church and the secular rulers from one of intertwined and unclear
powers to an ultimate separation of church and state.

In the Call to Crusade, it states that Christ's example calls for them to "demand that we should lay

considered a war that has a good cause. This is an example of a just war because Christians are
called to protect and free their religious brothers. Pope Urban II even says, "All who died ... shall
have a immediate remission of sins. This I grant them through the power of God which I am
invested"(PDF 161). The Pope is establishing his influence over his people to the extent that they
are willing to die for their religion. This is some years after Gregory VII yet his elevation of Papal
powers caused a Pope to be able to call people to just war similar to how a secular ruler is able to

Pope Gregory Vii and Pope Innocent Iii: a Comparative Study
Throughout the central Middle Ages, Europe was characterized by the power struggle between the
secular and the ecclesiastic. The question of rule by God or by man was one which arose with
unwavering frequency among scholars, clergy, and nobility alike. The line which separated church
and state was blurry at best, leading to the development of the Investiture Conflict in the eleventh
and twelfth centuries, and the attempts to undermine the heir to the throne in the twelfth and
thirteenth centuries. Four men stand out among dozens in this effort to define the powers of the lay
versus that of the spiritual: Emperor/kings Henry IV and John of England, and the popes who
aggressively challenged their exertions of authority, Pope Gregory VII ... Show more content on

In January of 1198, after holding office during the relatively short reigns of four popes and
achieving the position of Cardinal Deacon, he succeeded Pope Celestine III. Innocent III was thirty–
seven years of age. The reigns of Gregory VII and Innocent III were remarkably similar in their
attempts to exert ecclesiastic power over secular rulers. Gregory's outlook was characterized by his
reformist behavior, supporting the notion of challenging the sacred character of kings. "Implicit in
the concept of ‘lay investiture' was the idea that kings were layman. Yet kings were anointed, and
in the eleventh century most people, including ecclesiastics, viewed royal consecration as akin to
priestly ordination." Gregory intelligently avoided being named a radical, whereby he took a more
complicated position: he did not comment directly on the status of kings, but he believed them
semi–laymen, placing their rank below that of the minor clerical order and therefore not in a
position to elect or invest bishops or other ecclesiastic officials. He articulated his beliefs through a
decree, the Dictatus Papae, which succinctly and articulately stated his demands

Corrupt Pope Corrupts
In the same way we see another corrupt pope having the same problem when pope John XXIII

started when Pope John wanted a third occupation after advancing in his military position and then

There were many practices that went on within the church such as: Simony, Selling of Indulgences,
relics, pilgrimages, and the sexual immorality of popes, as well as priests and nuns. The practices
were not of God and more so God wrote against these in his word and thus making them very sinful
and wrong actions. Simony: the act of buying and selling spiritual privileges, was done by many
popes including: Clement XIII, Clement VII, Stephen VII, John X, John XI, John XII etc. The name
simony originated from the man simon Magus, who once sought to buy the power of the holy spirit
from the apostles. He had hoped for that power to be able to lay hands on others to then receive the
holy spirit. In the end he is told to repent from what he persuade and ask for forgiveness from God.
In addition to Simony, Peter told the church that if anyone tryed the act of Simony they were to be
told to repent at once. In contradiction, the church ignored this and the act of Simony grew. Then in
the middle of the eleventh century the act of Simony turned from spiritual things to more material
things. When being involved in this act it is not required for money to be exchanged from one
person to the other for the act of Simony to be considered done. As well as if the action is for

Pope Francis : Becoming A Pope
Becoming a Pope is a very demanding challenge. Not only you are the priest of the whole Catholic
Church, which has over one billion members, they have to maintain peace in the others churches.
Pope Francis is one of those Popes who preserves and is currently the Head of the Catholic Church.
He endured many hardships throughout his life. He started from the very bottom to now the top. A
biography written by Elisabetta Pique about Pope Francis and a couple of websites tell his life and
becoming a Pope is actually described there. The sites and the book tell about his childhood and the
path of being a Pope.
As I mentioned before, the Pope is the head of the Catholic Church. They are the head of the Bishop
of Rome. The word "pope" comes from the Greek word "pappa." In the ancient times, the Pope had
a huge role back then. In the early centuries, there were many religions in Europe. They include
Judaism, Islam, and many others. Christianity was starting to be practiced in Rome in year 30 AD.
Rome was the first place to start Christianity and slowly became the city of teachings. In 195 AD,
Pope Victor I, one of the first Popes in the early centuries, observe made the people observe one of
the most important days in the Christian faith, Easter. The first centuries for Popes were to spread
Christianity away from Rome, to places in Europe where Christianity never existed.
Like Pope Victor I, many other Popes help to spread Christianity and start churches around Europe.

An Analysis Of Pope Innocent IV
This source is an excerpt from a letter from Pope Innocent IV to King henry III of England on the
23rd January 1245, shortly after the sacking of Jerusalem by Khwarezmian forces in the same year.
When a Pope traditionally launches a crusade it is accompanied with excitatoria, formal letters
appealing to nobility and kings for contribution to the forthcoming campaign. Although this letter
was intended for the English king, Peter Jackson implies that the missing letter to King Louis IX
would have almost have been identical concerning its content, language and the overarching appeal
for the crusade to respond to the sacking of Jerusalem at the hands of the Khwarezmians. Discussion

He immediately found himself in a difficult position as pope, with numerous issues arising, such as
the hostility escalating between the Holy Roman Emperor and the papacy, the increase of Islamic
incursions into the Holy Land and of course the Mongol invasion of Europe. There was indeed prior
warning of the defensive vulnerability of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, as Pope Innocent IV received a
letter complaining that there were only one hundred pilgrim knights defending the city, and more
reinforcements from Western Europe was needed for protection. Although this may have been note
by the newly appointed Pope, the struggle with the Holy Roman Emperor through the continuation
of Pope Gregory IX's policy against Frederick II may have overshadowed this plea from the Holy
Land. In fact, Pope Innocent IV's position was so untenable in Rome due to the Emperor's actions to
increase dissent, that he fled to Lyon and immediately set about organising the Council of Lyon for
1245. His letter to Henry III was part of an effort from his base in Lyon to call for a crusade in
reaction to the sacking of Jerusalem by the Khwarezmians, but he struggled to garner much support
for the crusade due to the internal struggles within Europe, with only King Louis IX fully committed
to the campaign. The relationship between Pope Innocent IV and King Henry III is one of note, as
since the ties between Rome and the English King were established early through the papal support
given to Henry at the end of the Baron's war. The papacy desperately needed political allies due to
the increasing threat posed by the military might of the Holy Roman Emperor and Henry II could be
said to be one of them. Although the papacy could find respite through their relationship between
the King of France and King of England respectively, the relationship between the two kingdoms
was strenuous. A crusade

Pope Boniface Viii's Challenges To The King
Pope Boniface VIII's Challenges to the Kingship of Philip's
Pope Boniface VIII wrote the bulls, 'Clericis Laicos' in 1296 and 'Unam Sanctam' in 1302, to affirm
and perform the papal supremacy over his ecclesiastical persons and the kings, Philip IV of France
and Edward I of England. Both bulls consist of the decrees that restrain the rulers from enforcing
their derogatory authority over Christians: one forbids prelates and churchmen to pay the tax that
laymen heavily imposed on them: the latter one demands suspected clergies under the papal
jurisdiction, furthermore insisting the pope's total authority over his churchmen in France. Philip had
knocked off 'Clericis Laicos' by depriving Boniface of a major revenue source, yet the pope again
threw down the gauntlet against the rulers with the new threat of excommunication. Although both
bulls indicate the similar ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to 'Clericis Laicos', Boniface criticized and opposed to Philip for his unethical scheme to
take over the churchmen's possession to continue his dishonest war with England. Since Philip
needed a tremendous amount of money to prepare for the war, he overtaxed his people including
clergies without any exception. However, Boniface considered Philip's preparation of the war as a
plot to pursue his power over the church's possessions. Therefore, he denounced the king's
overtaxation on the churchmen as though he suspected the king of "striving to subject the
churchmen to slavery and bring them under his control." (Robinson) However, Boniface mildly
reacted to the heavy taxation on the clergies in which he merely forbade them to pay their tax rather
than directly objecting to the king. With indignation toward Boniface's reaction, Philip threatened to
jolt Apostolic Palace in an economical way. Therefore, it was inevitable for him to withdraw his
hand from 'Clericis

Pope Innocent III Capitularies
Sometime in the late 1100s to the early 1200s, the church's fought for and rose to a higher power.
Pope Innocent III was responsible for the new church law, called the canons, and church reform that
was established during this time. Pope Innocent III's time as the pope was really the main turning
point for the powers that the church had. This is evident in the canons that were established and
written by him and a council of the estimated over 1000 church officials of different titles, during
his time as pope. The canons are a clear representation of some of the exertion of new found powers
that the church had. The canons show how the rules and laws of religious related things were passed

One of the more straight forward and raw legal documents that we read for class, called the
capitularies, were helpful in illustrating this fact. The capitularies were written throughout the late
700s and early in 800s and many of the problems addressed/rules made had to do with bishops and
churches. The capitularies hold many rules that can be seen as rules that the churches should have
been able to control themselves, which could be why they fought for more power later on. One
examples of these rules is the capitulary number five of the Paderborn capitularies that says, "If
anyone kills a bishop or a priest or a deacon, he shall likewise pay with his life," (Loyn, 300). This
rule definitely seems like something that the churches should have control of themselves, but alas
rules like this were put into the hands of the king/lords of this time. The church was very much
controlled by a higher power in the early medieval times, which is evident from the difference if the
people in control that wrote the capitularies from the Carolingian Dynasty and the people that wrote

The Causes Of Pope Urban II : The Crusades
The Crusades were a religious war that was fought over the Christian control of Holy Lands. Pope
Urban II initiated the war in the 11th century to try and take back control over the Holy Lands from
the Muslims. There are eight official crusades that did not achieve their goal of gaining control. The
Crusades lasted for nearly two centuries, and the effects can still be seen to this day. The Crusade
began after Pope Urban II gave a speech to the community asking them to help. When Pope Urban
II gave his speech he wanted to aid the Byzantines with recapturing the Holy Lands, reduce warfare
in Europe, and strengthen the church; however, the situation transformed into the robbing and
killing of the innocent, the pillaging of the Byzantine ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is not one of the reasons that Pope Urban II started the Crusades for in his speech.
During the 4th crusade the Christian Eastern Roman Empire was taken by the Crusaders. Nicetas
Choniates writes that, "The divine body and blood of Christ was spilled upon the ground or thrown
about... Christ was robbed and insulted and his garments were divided by lot." this writing says that
the crusaders robbed the Eastern Roman Empire and split up the loot they got. He then proceeds to
saying that "For the sacred altar, formed of all kinds of precious materials and admired by the whole
world, was broken into bits and distributed among the soldiers, as was all the other sacred wealth of
so great and infinite splendor." Nicetas Choniates is saying that the famous relics of Christ were also
taken as loot without a second thought. The crusaders pillaged the Byzantine citizens which was
complete opposite call of action that Pope Urban II gave in his speech.
Pope Urban II told his people that they needed to recapture the Holy Lands from the muslims.
Saladin, a Muslim king that conquered the first Crusader Kingdom in Jerusalem, gave a speech
saying "Now God has reserved the merit of its recovery for one house the house of the sons of
Saladin's family, to unite all hearts in appreciation of its members." Pope Urban

Francis used his predecessors as anchoring points in his doctrine.
"In his 1990 World Day of Peace speech, John Paul II declared the environment to be a moral
priority of the Church, warning that "world peace is threatened not only by the arms race, regional
conflicts, and continued injustices among peoples and nations, but also by a lack of due respect for
nature." Benedict XVI was nicknamed "the green pope" because he spoke on environmental issues
so frequently; he had solar panels installed on the roof of the Vatican and even rolled out a hybrid
version of the Popemobile." (The Pope's Moral Case for Taking On Climate Change– The Atlantic)
What I was able to gather from all this information is this is not the first time that the Church has
taken on environmentalism. A former staffer at the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops

of his argument is third world countries will probably feel the largest impact of climate change in

the rapid change in the environment causing the land to be too dry and the rainfall is too

Pope Francis Influence
On March 13, 2013 white smoke ushered in a new era within the Roman Catholic Church. For the
first time in its history, a Pope from the Americas was chosen to lead. It was expected that the newly
elected American Pope, who called himself Francis after St. Francis of Assisi, would help restore the
Catholic Church's reputation, reform the clerical bureaucracy, and reinvigorate Catholic
participation. In the first few months of his papacy, that is exactly what he did.
Pope Francis did away with ornate and rigid traditions of previous popes. He restructured core
Vatican institutions such as the clerical hierarchy and the banking system, in order to drive out
corruption. His messages of simplicity and mercy were engrained in unselfish gestures, such as the
washing of offenders feet, (something) , and (something), that helped bring Catholics back into the
fold. Yet, for some Catholics, like Maureen Dowd, Pope Francis' efforts have not changed the
church enough.

The Significance of the Pope
Among the institutions established throughout the span of human history intended to govern the
lives of men, perhaps none have been more lasting or have exerted more influence on the course of
history than that of the papacy. As the recognized successor to St. Peter, who was ordained by Jesus
Christ as the bishop of Rome and the leader of the universal church, the pope represents the spiritual
authority of Christendom and stands as a symbol of union within the Catholic Church. The continual
succession, from as early as 32 AD until present day, has seen a total of 265 popes (The List of
Popes) hold the title of "Vicar of Christ," and this unbroken chain of leadership stands as a testament
to the enduring significance of the papacy throughout the development of western civilization. Long
based in the Roman enclave now known as Vatican City, the papacy has been both a transformative
political power on the world stage, and a religious body transformed by the inexorable pull of
progress. With more than 77 million individuals identifying themselves as Catholics around the
world as of 2011, the pope holds authority over a church with a larger population than France, the
United Kingdom or Italy (CARA Catholic Poll). The current pope, Benedict XVI, was elected in
2005 and has assumed the roles associated with the modern papacy, namely the appointment of
bishops and cardinals, the management of the Church's administrative affairs, convening ecumenical

Napoleon And The Pope
NAPOLEON AND THE POPE
1. Napoleon and the Pope was written by Edward Elton Young Hales. The book was initially
published in 1962 and later there were numbers of translations to other languages. Hales is an
English catholic historian born in England. He was an inspector in the British Ministry of Education
in London in 1950s. Apart from the Napoleon and the Pope, the author has written many books
related to the Catholic Church. Those include Pio Nono, Mazzini and the secret societies, The
Catholic Church in the Modern World, Revolution and Papacy, The Emperor and the Pope, Pope and
His Revolution, Chariot of Fire. The Napoleon and the Pope is considered as a variant of the
Emperor and the Pope.

he took time out of his schedule to dine with the homeless as well as visit the prisoners. These

How Did The Pope Lose His Power

  • 1. How Did The Pope Lose His Power Power is said to be the authority to act. Throughout the years of growth and strong leadership, the Roman Church began to suffer its grip on the faithfulness of the European people. This downfall was inevitable due to the strict policies of the Popes that had tremendous power. During the centuries, the papacy suffered a major decline in authority due to several events and movements. These include, the incident between King Philip IV and Boniface III, the Great Schism and post– Black Death. In the end, I strongly agree that the Pope's power had declined in relation to all the events and movements that have happened in the past to affect it severely. During the 10th century, there have been conflict between the Pope and the king for powers. The most ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In response to all this chaos, Philip accused the Pope of committing crimes against man, nature, and God. Pope Boniface didn't like the accusation, so he retreated to Avignon. The Pope's movements of going back to Avignon were a weakness shown because the people of Rome felt very fearful and anxious with the idea of the Pope overseeing the citizens from a different city. In the perspective of the people, they didn't believe in the Pope to make wise and crucial decisions for Rome. Things came to an end when King Philip IV made a powerful order of denouncing the Pope. Later, King Philip gathered an important council meeting of the Church and talked about the allegations of Pope Boniface, which includes simony, bribery, and more. To counterattack King Philip, Boniface came up with a papal bull to banish the king, but it wasn't enough. The last attack happens when Philip demands an arrest on Boniface, but failed. Finally, Pope Boniface VIII died as he was viewed as a crude leader by the people of Rome. In fact, many will say that he abused his powers when he moved in at the Avignon. I think this was one major event that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Pope Sixtus 2 Research Paper Pope Sixtus II, who took over after St. Stephen in 257, is best known for partaking in one of the most famous pieces of art in Western history, known as Sistine Madonna. Sixtus was having trouble with some African and Asian churches regarding Baptism. He received letters from St. Dionysus of Alexandria, which advised him to remain easygoing and try to disregard the other practices that were taking place. After adhering to his advice, he was referred to as a "good and peaceable priest." In 257, afraid of many big empires such as the Persians, Valerian allotted his first decree to the Christians. He attempted to seize rich Christian lands and distribute them to balance out the empire. Many of the clergy members were dedicated, and as a result ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Pope Francis Controversy On the New York Times opinion page Room for Debate, a question was pondered "How Radical is Pope Francis?" The debate centers on the issue of whether or not Pope Francis is focused on spreading Catholic beliefs or on dispersing a liberal point of view. A full version of the text written on September 17, 2015 can be found at the following link http://www.nytimes.com/roomfordebate/2015/09/17/how–radical–is–pope–francis. The issue is debated by two scholars, Megan J. Clark and Randy Boyagoda and a journalist Michael Brendan Dougherty. Clark is an Assistant Professor of Theology and Religious Studies at St. John's University. Boyagoda is a Professor and University Director at Ryerson University. Additionally, both Clark and Boyagoda are published ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, I believe that people selectively choose what they wish to hear and observe, and just because the Pope has articulated or conveyed something that people agree with, does not brand him a conservative or a liberal. Americans today tend to believe that the papacy's standpoint is connected with the Republican Party. With the election of Pope Francis this view point has begun to change, and has multitudes of people questioning whether the Catholic Church is aligned with a political party, and if so which one? Although a radical pope may seem trivial, it is in fact crucial in terms of today's concerns over political leaders own morals. Whether government officials view the pope as a political figure and leader this issue is important to the politicians who adopt the Pope's ideals to support their own claims. Ultimately, this country and others are governed by men and women each of whom has a religious stance. As a result, it is almost impossible for governing figure heads to rule without the ideals and morals guided by their culture's theology. However, the question put forth "How Radical is Pope Francis?" requires further examination. In the United States, there is a separation of church and state, but is Pope Francis aligned with a political party or do Liberals and Conservatives alike align their political agendas with his theological ... • 7. Pope Silverius: Pope During The Dark Ages Pope Silverius was a Pope during the Dark Ages in Europe, his date of birth is unknown, and he died in 537 AD after being banished on an island off of the coast. Silverius was the son of Pope Hormisdas, and was born before his father joined the Priesthood. Silverius was the Pope for a little more than a year, and was able to alienate the Empress Theodora, the wife of Justinian a Byzantine Emperor known for his reform of civil law. He was forced out of the papacy by a Byzantinum general because Silverius upsetted Theodora. Then, Silverius was wrongly accused of assisting the Goths attack the Byzantine Empire, and was exiled on the Island of Palmaria. Centuries later, he was appointed as a venerated Saint. Pope Silverius had a very uneventful childhood, he was thought to be attracted to the Church at a very young age. Another opinion also speculated that he was forced to become a Christian because his father, Hormisdas, became a priest, and later on became a Pope; in fact, Hormisdas is also a Saint. In the modern day world, a Pope is not allowed to have children; in the sixth century it was not uncommon to find Priests and Popes with children, or even married. However, he was taken out of office by brute force, because of this Rome was besieged, and was also banished which was not good publicity for the Church. Overall, he fought against a false belief that he successfully proved wrong. He was a good Pope because he fought against a false belief and did not hurt the catholic ... • 9. The Papacy Of The Pope The Papacy The Papacy, which is the power the Pope has, and the hierarchy he is the head of, has a long history filled with corruption, greed, but also good. The Pope is the head of the Catholic Church, controller of the faith, and yet throughout history, Popes have not been all that faithful, but terribly corrupt and sinful. So if it was so sinful, then why is the Papacy still so prominent in today's society? In the world today, over 1.2 million people are Roman Catholics and supposedly because of their faith all of them respect and follow the Pope at the head of the church. Even today the Pope still holds authority, and the Papacy has morphed into a beacon of goodwill that simply shows the goodness of mankind. So why still do people disparage him as "demonic" or "the antichrist"? To know this let us truly start at the beginning. Every story has a beginning, and this one begins in the 1st century. When Peter died, the Christians were at a loss as to what they should do; some took the route of building a hierarchical church whose head would be called the Bishop of Rome. In 467A.D. the dark ages began after the fall of Rome. Literacy, science, art, all began to suffer as people struggled to survive and the only people to preserve any of these studies was the Catholic Church. Their clergy were some of the only people able to read and write, and because of this, they tirelessly worked to preserve the Bible and other literature and spread both stories and the gospel to ... The Obligation Of Pope Francis To The Catholic Church Pope Francis has condemned the corrupt people who donate "dirty money" to the Catholic Church, saying their tainted donations are not wanted. On Wednesday, Pope Francis addressed the crowd at the St. Peter's Square and referenced the book of Isaiah in the Bible. The pontiff said God does not want offerings given by hands tainted by blood, according to the Catholic News Agency. "Bring no more vain offerings; incense is an abomination to me...when you spread forth your hands, I will hide my eyes from you," Pope Francis quoted from the Bible. • 17. The Pope And The Vatican Rebellious and Pope are two words that generally do not go together, but that is not the case for Pope Francis. The Roman Catholic Church's new Pope, Pope Francis, has come in to power with the ambition to transform the Vatican for the better. Will the Pope Change the Vatican? Or Will the Vatican Change the Pope? is an article written by Robert Draper and published by national geographic. The article explains the Popes origin and his progressive changes to the Vatican to revert the Catholic Church to what it was meant to be, a church for the people. Dr. Fouberg's book Human Geography: People, Place, and Culture dives into the Catholic Church, and the cultural and geographic significance it has on the human population. Religion is a fragment of an extensive list of human identities, it is part culture, part of a learned beliefs and values that held by individuals (Fouberg, 28). Religion is culturally gripping prevailing priorities (Fouberg, 205). Christianity has the largest diffusion for its cultural hearth of any of the major world religions (Fouberg, 209). Christianity follows the same cultural hearth as Judaism until the New Testament where Jesus Christ is introduced as the son of God (Fouberg, 217). Christianity split into two separate Christian sects in 1054 CE, one of them being the Roman Catholic Church (Fouberg, 217). • 19. Medieval Kings and Popes Essay The Pope was the title give to the head of the church, to which he was changed with the religious care taking of the clergy and other believers. For military aid and expansion, early popes looked to medieval kings like Clovis of the Franks, but by the time of Charlemagne's coronation by Pope Leo III, it became questionable whether the pope or the king was the higher authority. After the fall of the Roman Empire, Europe was decentralized with the development of feudalism, and this allowed the only unifying establishment, the Church, to become more powerful. Though the Pope and medieval kings originally held separate roles, with the rise of feudalism the popes gained greater political power despite challenges from kings and lay investiture. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... During this time, feudalism developed. In the feudal system, weak kings granted lands to greater lords in return for military aid. Greater lords in turn granted lands to lesser lords below them. These nobles governed all people, including clergyman to whom they granted a 'fief" of land. When a clergyman, who were to pay their loyalty to the pope, became a vassal, or under the charge of a lord who granted him land, it gave the nobles and kings power. But because the papacy had the unified support of the larger peasant class and there were no strong kings to challenge him, the pope gained greater secular power than the nobility in addition to religious influence. Not only could he banish people from the Church through religious excommunication, but he could establish secular decrees like the Peace and Truce of God, which limited the appropriate locations and days for war. Secular powers such as these were previously reserved to kings, and illustrate that the pope due to the weakening of kings in the feudal system, held greater authority. Originally medieval popes and kings held separate roles: the pope was a religious caretaker and the king was a secular head. Pope Francis Of Assisi Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on December 17 1936, is the 266th and current Pope of the Catholic Church, having been elected Bishop of Rome and absolute Sovereign of Vatican City. Born in Buenos Aires as the son of Italian parents, Jorge Mario Bergoglio was ordained a priest in 1969. From 1973 to 1979 he was Argentina's Provincial superior of the Society of Jesus. He became Archbishop of Buenos Aires in 1998, and a cardinal in 2001. Following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI in February 2013, on March 13, 2013 the papal conclave elected Jorge Mario Bergoglio, who chose the papal name Francis in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi. He is calling upon the Church and the world with encouragement to begin a new chapter in evangelization. Pope Francis has captured the attention of the world with his simple ways, humbleness, and love for the poor and sick. After reading Pope Francis' new book, "The Name Of God Is Mercy". It's a written in the form of conversation with the Vatican reporter and writer Andrea Tornielli. It's worth reading whatever one's belief system. At the intellectual level, it gives a sense of which direction one of the largest religious groups in the world is heading, and at the human level, it gives an expression of something unifying. In the book, the Pope has as relentless focus on mercy and forgiveness and indeed has called this year, the Holy Year of Mercy. Critical to this is his reframing of sin. Rather than seeing it as something to be despised, he sees it as an opportunity for mercy and forgiveness to manifest itself. In religious terms, he writes about how the original sin meant humanity is forever wounded. This means we can distinguish right from wrong, but we will inevitably falter. The mercy of God is such that he sacrificed his Son, Jesus, to redeem humanity for its sins. And precisely because there is sin, God revealed himself as ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 23. Why Was The Pope Called For The Crusades THESIS: The leaders of the Roman Catholic Church proposed The Crusades as a mission for religious integrity but they were actually intended as a way to gain power for the Pope.. Consequently, over time, even the Crusaders, who initially believed in the religious mission, shifted their motivation from religious devotion to greed and vengeance. The Pope called for the Crusades to manipulate the people of the West. The Crusades were not the result of religious devotion, rather, they were the only way the Roman Catholic Church could effectively achieve what they wanted. To start, there was no clear religious control,"...If the Pope could muster a large army against the enemies of Christianity, his claim to be leader of Christian society in the West would be strengthened." If the Pope called for the Crusades, he would gain the authority and the respect he wanted to control the population. Additionally, the Churches did not have a high level of integrity. They held a virtual audience inside the Vatican in Italy, broadcasting to US cities: Chicago, Los Angeles, and Texas. Everyday people in the audience included students, parents with their children, the homeless, and nuns. • 27. A Rhetorical Analysis Of Pope Urban II Pope Urban II delivers a touching an inspiring speech that is meant to highlight the importance of trusting in God in one attempt to overcome their challenges. The pope delivers the message at a time when there is turmoil and the country had been subjected to chaos to misunderstanding by the kings and rulers at the time. In his speech the religious leader employs a prayer in their attempt to convince their followers to embark of the dangerous journey and rescue what belongs to them based on the motivation of bible scriptures. One motivation that the pope uses in luring Christians into the idea of fighting in the holy land is based in the fact that God has given them power unlike other nations to defeat their enemies (Jan). In his speech, Urban II also mentions their uniqueness in the ability to possess courage, and humility means that their God favors them and they do not need to worry as they plan to tackle and overcome the enemy in war. In the motivational speech, the pope further reminds the city members that they need to be aware that God is with them and they should not worry in the battle (Jan). ... • 31. The Pope As A Spiritual Place The Pope is the bishop of Rome and the head of the Roman Catholic Church. The Pope is one of the most important religious aspect to Christians from all around the world. This means that he represents Jesus Christ's love and care for every individual. That is why the Pope 's priority is to get to know people, understand how they live, listen to their interests while sharing hardships and joy. In addition, "the Pope is also the Unifier of the People of God." The Pope travels all around the world, from the richest to the poorest countries to meet with people, learn their stories, and to bless them. But most importantly, "the Pope's roles are known as Biblical, Dogmatic Development, Church Government and Papal Primacy Teaching Office." The beginning of the Church was a unique and creative act of Christ, it's a place that brings people together where experiences are brought to life and shared with one another. The Church is a spiritual place, a community of believers who all share one common thing; having faith. But in order for the church to function properly it needs constant guidance to show people its mission. Therefore, Christ perceived the need that someone should take control and guide the church's mission in the right direction and also to have a primacy over his Church. So, He laid this authority on Peter until he would return and take control himself. As I read one after the other, watch media clips, I found they were contradicting one another but this is what I took away from it all and the reason why I believe Pope John Paul II is worthy of Sainthood. Even in childhood, he believed that the tragedies he faced early in life was the will of God. This led him to his greater calling in the Catholic church. Pope John Paul II did not set out his papal career to become a saint, nevertheless, he demonstrated saintly attributes. It was his devotion to the Catholic life, God and the desire to help those in need that aided him in his journey towards sainthood. It was Pope John Paul II who had faith in his capacity and his status as a public figure to do something transformative. Conflict Between Emperors And Popes Based on the video lessons, what were the reasons behind the conflicts between the emperors and the popes during this period: The main reason for strife between the popes and the holy Roman emperors starts with Fredrick Barbarossa realizing that the French and English Kings were beginning to wield a lot of power and that there was way too much decentralization going on in his Empire. Fredrick begins by trying to take the Northern Lombard states in Italy for their wealth. The Lombard states however are not really fans of being absorbed into the HRE, and the first seed of discord between the Emperor and Pope is sown when the Pope sides with the Lombard cities. • 43. Why Are The Popes Important In The Middle Ages Within the Middle Ages, the church became the most influential and important force for the European society. As the central governments of Europe grew weak, the church rose in strength. In result came an ever lasting battle between the two. Popes were in control of spiritual matters, and the emperor or king were in charge of political affairs. During the Middle Ages, the line in between spiritual and political was clearly not bold enough. The Popes consistently tried to sway the king's decisions and actions, which led to the king battling for power. Religion was a gigantic part of ones life in this time period. They truly felt that by following god, heaven would be their destination after death. The Church was able to create a set of guidelines for behavior known as the Canon law. They created a court system as well, if one were to break these laws. A punishment for breaking the law was excommunication. Although most of the prominent modifications enacted by Pope Gregory VII altered the ethical lives of Church leaders still remain important today, the doctrines established by the Pope and the emerging power of the papacy radically transformed the political relationship of the Catholic Church and the secular rulers from one of intertwined and unclear powers to an ultimate separation of church and state. Gregory's outlook was characterized by his reformist behavior, supporting the notion of challenging the sacred character of kings. "Implicit in the concept of ‘lay investiture' was the idea that kings were layman. Yet kings were anointed, and in the eleventh century most people, including ecclesiastics, viewed royal consecration as akin to priestly ordination." Gregory intelligently avoided being named a radical, whereby he took a more complicated position: he did not comment directly on the status of kings, but he believed them semi–laymen, placing their rank below that of the minor clerical order and therefore not in a position to elect or invest bishops or other ecclesiastic officials. He immediately found himself in a difficult position as pope, with numerous issues arising, such as the hostility escalating between the Holy Roman Emperor and the papacy, the increase of Islamic incursions into the Holy Land and of course the Mongol invasion of Europe. There was indeed prior warning of the defensive vulnerability of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, as Pope Innocent IV received a letter complaining that there were only one hundred pilgrim knights defending the city, and more reinforcements from Western Europe was needed for protection. Although this may have been note by the newly appointed Pope, the struggle with the Holy Roman Emperor through the continuation of Pope Gregory IX's policy against Frederick II may have overshadowed this plea from the Holy Land. In fact, Pope Innocent IV's position was so untenable in Rome due to the Emperor's actions to increase dissent, that he fled to Lyon and immediately set about organising the Council of Lyon for 1245. His letter to Henry III was part of an effort from his base in Lyon to call for a crusade in reaction to the sacking of Jerusalem by the Khwarezmians, but he struggled to garner much support for the crusade due to the internal struggles within Europe, with only King Louis IX fully committed to the campaign. The relationship between Pope Innocent IV and King Henry III is one of note, as since the ties between Rome and the English King were established early through the papal support given to Henry at the end of the Baron's war. The papacy desperately needed political allies due to the increasing threat posed by the military might of the Holy Roman Emperor and Henry II could be said to be one of them. One examples of these rules is the capitulary number five of the Paderborn capitularies that says, "If anyone kills a bishop or a priest or a deacon, he shall likewise pay with his life," (Loyn, 300). Easter was previously observed on the fourteenth day of the moon, which was the celebration of the Jewish passover feast "Nisan or Quartodecimans" (Leviticus 23:5; Matthew 28:2; Mark 16:17; Luke 24:1–6; Acts ... • 69. Pope Francis Influence On March 13, 2013 white smoke ushered in a new era within the Roman Catholic Church. For the first time in its history, a Pope from the Americas was chosen to lead. It was expected that the newly elected American Pope, who called himself Francis after St. Francis of Assisi, would help restore the Catholic Church's reputation, reform the clerical bureaucracy, and reinvigorate Catholic participation. In the first few months of his papacy, that is exactly what he did. Pope Francis did away with ornate and rigid traditions of previous popes. He restructured core Vatican institutions such as the clerical hierarchy and the banking system, in order to drive out corruption. His messages of simplicity and mercy were engrained in unselfish gestures, such as the washing of offenders feet, (something) , and (something), that helped bring Catholics back into the fold. Yet, for some Catholics, like Maureen Dowd, Pope Francis' efforts have not changed the church enough. Summary ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In her piece, Dowd spoke against Pope Francis' lack of support for a group of American nuns who had publically endorsed liberal legislation (such as contraception, gay rights and abortion as well as a feminization of God) that contradicted long–held church teachings. Dowd questioned how Pope Francis could confess to believe in social justice and helping the poor when he failed to prevent orthodox clergy from chastising nuns who held beliefs that would seemingly align with the Pope's own motto of "Who am I to judge". • 73. The Significance of the Pope Among the institutions established throughout the span of human history intended to govern the lives of men, perhaps none have been more lasting or have exerted more influence on the course of history than that of the papacy. As the recognized successor to St. Peter, who was ordained by Jesus Christ as the bishop of Rome and the leader of the universal church, the pope represents the spiritual authority of Christendom and stands as a symbol of union within the Catholic Church. The continual succession, from as early as 32 AD until present day, has seen a total of 265 popes (The List of Popes) hold the title of "Vicar of Christ," and this unbroken chain of leadership stands as a testament to the enduring significance of the papacy throughout the development of western civilization. Long based in the Roman enclave now known as Vatican City, the papacy has been both a transformative political power on the world stage, and a religious body transformed by the inexorable pull of progress. With more than 77 million individuals identifying themselves as Catholics around the world as of 2011, the pope holds authority over a church with a larger population than France, the United Kingdom or Italy (CARA Catholic Poll). The current pope, Benedict XVI, was elected in 2005 and has assumed the roles associated with the modern papacy, namely the appointment of bishops and cardinals, the management of the Church's administrative affairs, convening ecumenical councils to arbitrate ... • 77. Pope Francis Research Paper According to Jim Colin's idea of the "high–performance organization" (Eric M. Eisenberg, P.111), Pope Francis has achieved "Level 5 leadership" or the highest quality of leadership, in which the corresponding essential quality of character is modesty. Pope Francis's personal humility about one's accomplishments and a profound commitment to the good of the society makes his leadership appealing and successful. He is humble and is able to have a modest view of one's own importance. Pope Francis denies himself the luxuries and being accessible, making himself more approachable and attempts to get in touch with others. For instance, instead of living in the Apostolic Palace, he chooses to live in a Vatican residence alongside visiting clergy and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He washes and kisses the feet of 12 people of different ages, of different disabilities and different religious affiliation in Rome on April 2017, during the "In Coena Domini" Mass. On his 77th birthday, he decided to celebrate by going for breakfast with four homeless people often seen near Vatican. By modelling his vision, Pope Francis not only inspires followers but also shows them how they might embody these same values themselves by networking and achieving as found in the idea of "servant leadership" by Robert K. Greenleaf (Eisenberg. P. 112). On his U.S. visit, for instance, he took time out of his schedule to dine with the homeless as well as visit the prisoners. These tangible actions show that he does not see himself as superior to his followers, and he encourages others to see themselves as equal to those around them. In other words, Pope Francis convinces his followers in both ethos and pathos way. By saying ethos, Pope Francis is able to gain the trust of his followers through the fundamental character or spirit of himself, which is to live modestly and treat every individual equally.
