Muslim American Discrimination
Another way to solve this issue is enforcing more laws against discrimination. A person might treat
another person differently based on their beliefs. Not only for Muslims, but other religious groups
like Christians and Jews experience this type of hate. There can be a range of different types of
discrimination from workplace to harassment. One law that is in effect in the country is harassment
in general. According to the U.S Equal Employment Opportunity Commission's website, "It is
illegal to harass a person because of his or her religion." This type of harassment can range from

Most people have adopted the habits of ignorant and inconsiderate values that have come to define
what our society is today. The increasing issue of Muslim American discrimination today will be
only reversed if more extreme actions are taken and the idea of acceptance of others is portrayed.

A second ethical theory related to religion in the workplace is Deontology. Mosser (2013) defines
Deontology as rather than looking at the consequences of an act, deontology looks at the reason for
which an act is done, and the rule according to which one chooses to act. Deontology does not deny
that acts have consequences; rather, it insists that those consequences should not play a role in our
moral evaluation of such acts (p. 20). In October of 2009, Trevor Keezer was terminated by Home
Depot for refusing to remove a pin from his uniform declaring "One Nation under God, Indivisible."
Mr. Keezer, a cashier with Home Depot, contended that the button he had worn for over one year
before any action was taken by his employer expressed his support for American troops and his
Christian faith. Were the actions taken by his employer warranted or was Mr. Keezer the victim of
arbitrary religious discrimination unrelated to job performance (Adam, 2012)? Religious
discrimination poses very real questions and dilemmas balancing the rights of employees to protect
and express their beliefs and those who feels religion in the workplace should not be allowed to
express and practice their beliefs to the detriment of others which causes a moral issue. In this

item I would like to delineate in this essay is the correlations between prejudice, racism, and

suggest that there is an obvious solution that is fair. When it comes to fairness, I think it is fair
that they come to our culture and adapt. It is only fair that we adapt to their culture. For example,
in Muslim culture most women wear hijab and long clothing to remain modest...would it be fair

Because religion or spirituality is important to many people, individuals in the working world need
to be aware of the issues surrounding each so that they will be able to converse with others without
causing turmoil. It is important to understand that prayer plays a large part in the lives of people and
their everyday existence. In the following paper I will apply several ethical theories as well as
perspectives to religion in the workplace. I will also provide example and elaborate on each. I will
also provide history on the different theory and how they are similar to each other and how they
differ.
How to Deal with Religion in the Workplace The first amendment states, "Congress shall make no
law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the
freedom of speech, or the press; of the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the
Government for a redress of grievances" (Constitutional Amendments, 2014). This amendment
gives citizens, he right to practice any religion and the government cannot impose a religion on any

The Civil Rights Act Of 1964
When the Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 was enacted employees felt sigh of relief because
now it was unlawful for employers to discriminate against once race, color, religion, sex, or national
origin. "Title VII provided the legal basis for all people to pursue the work of their choosing and to
advance in their chosen occupations subject to the limitations of only their individual qualifications,
talents, and energies" (McConnell, 2013, p. 46). The Civil Rights Act of 1964 also established the
Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) to enforce the antidiscrimination
requirements of Title VII. What employees didn't know was that this was merely a law and laws are
broken all the time, although there are severe consequences. In the article Religious–Discrimination
Claims on the Rise by Melanie Trottman, it is stated that "the EEOC received 3,811 religion–based
complaints in fiscal 2012, the second–highest level ever and just below the record 4,151 in 2011"
(Trottman, 2013, p. 1). In another article Study: Workplace Religious Discrimination on the Rise by
Mike Ward lists similar number of religion–based complaints. The article by Trottman mentions that
the EEOC has filed religious–discrimination lawsuits against companies in the fast–food, hair–
salon, aviation, hotel, retail, medical and health–services industries. A recent case that the article

There are many questions that arise when there is talk about religion in the workplace. In the United
States, religion is a very controversial issue. The United States is one of the most religiously diverse
countries in the world. It is known to recognize at least 1500 religions. The EEOC requires
employers to "Reasonably accommodate an employee's religious beliefs or practices unless doing so
would cause more than a minimal burden on the operations of the employer's business. This means
an employer may be required to make reasonable adjustments to the work environment that will

in the workplace is ethical, and it is important among employees and should be taken seriously by
their employers. I will argue from the utilitarianism theory, that religion in the workplace is ethical
and should be allowed in all workplaces as long as the employees follow workplace policies and
practices. I will contrasthis view with that of ethical egoism perspective, which would argue that
religion in the workplace is ethical and it allows employees to promote their own happiness and by
allowing them to practice their religious belief while in the workplace freely.

Professor Thomas K. Donaldson taught at Australian National University for years. In his article, he
made argument of the objection against the workplace democracy for the reasons that the conflicts
between the democratic environment and the private discretion that always accompanies the
discharge of responsibilities are not resolvable and enforceable. Solutions are then raised as 'perfect–
market argument' and the 'social–power argument.' The former idea turned out to be not proper with
the illustration that perfect–market is undesirable for the democratic nature. Besides, the explanation
of the relation between 'the private and the public' contributes to the wrong direction of 'perfect–
market argument' in the application of workplace democracy. Meanwhile, the writer hold the
opinion that the social power argument may play insignificant role in the compensation of the
democracy when making decision in the business. It may be valid but the modern theory could be
unhelpful in terms of the solutions for lack of democracy in workplace (Donaldson, 1994). Hence,
