Henry Hudson Accomplishments
Have you ever imagined having to go on a voyage for the queen of England? Well, there was one person
named Henry Hudson who did. He did many things during his lifetime. He had a pretty amazing life.
Henry Hudson's early life, life accomplishments, and his death are all important factors in England's
history. Henry Hudson was born in the 16th century between 1565–1570. He was born from an English
family and got his name from his grandfather Henry Hudson. He had four brothers. They are Edward
Hudson, Christopher Hudson, John Hudson and Thomas Hudson. In Henry Hudson's early life, he had a
very well educated young life. Henry Hudson had one wife named Katherine. They had three sons John,
Oliver, Richard Hudson. Henry Hudson had a lot of

Analysis Of The Poem ' Casting Into The Unknown ' By...
16 Reflection paper #2
I saw the glistening sunlight enhanced the silky fabric that cascaded the Earth around us, while the
frigid dew and vigorous winds dampened the air. Despite my pervious exposure to the Hudson River
during our first walking trip, standing in the dock allowed me to absorb the beautiful landscape and
gives me a different experience then looking at maps. I can only imagine what was going through Harry
Hudson's and Giovanni da Verrazzano's mind as they stumbled upon this estuary. The water completely
fascinates people, including myself, and like our assigned class reading "Casting into the Unknown" by
Marcelo Gleiser, the author alludes to the ocean as a representation of his collective identity, sense of
freedom and mystery. But most importantly, water is a symbol of a portal into the unknown. After
reading the article, I am able to relate it into our FBL activity and our class discussion. In my opinion,
the water in the Huston river, represents a portal into the past. The same breathing taking sight I saw
would've been similar to that sight in the 1800s. Although the water way has significantly reduced over
time, the Houston river is one of the physical connection that bridged me to the past and see what it was
like.
As we learned in class, the Lenapes were one of the native American tribes that were the first settlers in
New York. I want to be able to link the Lenape's way of life and how they survived off the landscape.

Grid Pl A Comparison Of Two Cities
Cities are very complex, large spaces. Every city is different, but many of them do share similar
qualities. Bristol, Rhode Island, Albany, New York, and Troy, New York are three good examples of
this. All three cities are waterfront cities and are laid out in a grid plan. Laying cities out in a grid plan is
done for many reasons such as, it's easily navigable, it's walkable, and it's economical meaning one can
do the most with the least amount of space. The grid layout is a key commonality between Bristol,
Albany, and Troy; however, they are all still very different.
Bristol, Rhode Island was founded in 1747 and was known for its slave trading and rubber company.
Bristol is essentially a peninsula, and thus it's a very good location for trading. ... Show more content on

All three share the commonality of a grid–like pattern on the water. Bristol's grid runs north to south
with one road that's parallel to the water, Albany's grid runs parallel to the water, and Troy's grid also
runs parallel to the water. Bristol has a fairly balanced city regarding where all the important buildings
are, Albany's are all in one area in the Empire State Plaza, and Troy's are also very spread out around the
city despite RPI being in the middle of it. Overall, these three cities are all very alike yet very

Over millions of years, these have contributed to building up many islands including Staten Island,
Hoffman Island, Swinburne Island and many others. The very low slope of the Hudson plays a great
role in the amount of discharge and island buildup, too, as it only rises about 0.24 inches per mile for the
last 150 miles of the rivers path. To give some perspective, the Mississippi river rises approximately 6
inches per mile during its course, and discharges about 700 million tons of sediment per year into the
Gulf of Mexico

Henry Hudson's Impact On The World
Henry Hudson was an English sailor, who studied navigation. Further data of his past life is nonexistent,
but he was married with three kids and lived in England. Hudson was born around circa 1565. Hudson
went on four voyages to discover a Northern trade route from England to the china. Instead he found a
shorter route to the Americas. His boat was named Hopewell. June 1611 Henry Hudson died to mutiny
on his last voyage. His crew got cold feet and threw Hudson and his son on a lifeboat, leaving them
adrift in the hudson bay. He started his voyages in 1607, on his first two voyages he was blocked by ice
and had to turn around. Along theses voyages Henry Hudson impacted the world we live in today. The
Hudson bay was named after Henry because he discovered the bay. On his third and fourth voyage he
used rumors of routes. The Moscovy Company had funded Henrys voyage. Henry's first and second
voyage didn't involve too much excitement. Along his first and second voyages he embarked upon
empty dreams and failure. He sailed past greenland and iceland but was forced to turn around due to ice
blockage. He commenced another voyage with the same company, this would affect his future life. Due
to more ice along the way, he was forced to turn around again. He ... Show more content on

northwest route and traveled by novascotia. He kept sailing, he passed by what would today be Boston
and plymouth Mass. He kept going up to New York along a river that is today known as the Hudson
River. He was optimistic of this passage, but once again he was put to an end. The Hudson River was
not a passage and as a result he had to turn around. On his return he stopped in England, but they had a

Henry Hudson Explorations
In 1500–1600 there were many different explorers of the New World. One of those explorers was Henry
Hudson. Some of these explorers were sponsored by Monarchs some were even sponsored by
themselves, but my explorers was sponsored by a company. Some were also very talented commanders
in their younger life. In the rest of this story you're gonna learn more about the life of Henry Hudson.
Although there were many different explorers Henry Hudson was very Passionate. Henry Hudson was
born on June 22, 1562 , in England. He died near or in the Hudson Bay, in Canada. Henry Hudson was
married to a woman named Katherine, and they had 3 sons. His oldest son went on the trip with hlm to

Hudson explored New York Harbor in 1524. Henry also sailed from Holland in the Half Moon on April
6, 1609. On his way to Holland, Hudson docked at Dartmouth, England. The English government then
ordered him and the english members of his crew to desist from further explorations for other countries.
He spent his career searching for a different Route to Asia , and he failed, and failed, and failed but he
still kept trying. Hudson and his crew traveled up a river. A river that was soon named after him. Once
the homeward voyage had begun, the mutineers seized Hudson, his son, and seven others casting them
adrift in the hudson Bay in a small open boat on June 22, 1611. Although the Discovery sailed home to
England, neither of the ringleaders returned with her, having been killed, together with several others, in
a fight with Eskimos. The river is now called "The Hudson River" The expedition of Henry Hudson had
several different impacts on many different people. After he died he was, and is still widely remembered
as a determined early explorer. His effort helped drive Europeans interest in North America. Today his
name can be found all around us on waterways, schools, bridges. and even

In A Flood Inside Me Analysis
At the start of the book Ed is simply existing. He's not living, "I cook. I eat. I wash but rarely iron. I live
in the past and believe that Cindy Crawford is by far the best supermodel. That's my life." (p.20) This is
a sentence that I feel really shows who Ed is at the beginning. He more or less does the same thing
every day in sort of a monotone way. Throughout the cards and difficulties that Ed goes through, we
really start to see a person emerging out of Ed. We see someone who is feeling and hoping and living.
"In a flood inside me....three minutes straight." (pg.351) This change that we see in Ed happens
progressively. Each card and task that is given to Ed brings out something in him that in the beginning
we didn't see often. During the first chapter it doesn't seem that Ed has a lot of fears. When we were first
introduced to him during the bank robbery scene I perceived him to be quite stupid. Then, we got to
know him a little more and I saw that he was afraid, afraid of not doing anything with his life. "Just
prior to the bank robbery, I'd been taking stock of my life. Cabdriver– and i'd funked my age at that. (
You need to be twenty.) No real career. No respect in the community. Nothing." (pg.15) ... Show more

He's afraid that he can help all these strangers, but that he won't be able to help the people he's known
the longest and cares for the most. "I'm afraid for Marv and for Audrey. I'm afraid for me. You can't let
them down, I lecture myself as each minute shoves past. Afraid. Afraid. I didn't come this far to fail the
one I've known the longest and care for the most. I run through them again, from Edgar Street to
Ritchie. Afraid. Afraid. The messages give me courage." (pg. 312) Ed is afraid to let his friends down,
but then he goes through previous messages and he gains courage. He doesn't let his friends down. He
helps Marv with his child, and he helps Audrey love again. One thing is for sure, he doesn't let them

Henry Hudson was an English explorer in the 1600s. He was born during 1565 in England, United
Kingdom. His parents' names are unknown, but he had three siblings named Thomas Hudson,
Christopher Hudson, and John Hudson. Henry got married to Katherine Hudson in the late 1500s.
Together they had three children, Oliver Hudson, John Hudson (who went on voyages with his father),
and Richard Hudson. On his last voyage his crew decided to cast him out. He soon later died of

Henry Hudson had many voyages that he went on. He had many sponsors and reasons why he wanted to

This voyage was unsuccessful because he did not find new trade routes from Europe to Asia. The next
year, 1608, Henry went in search of new routes to Asia. Except this time he sailed his ship, Hopewell,
over the tip of Russia. He had to turn back and sail home because he ran into thick and heavy ice. In
1609 he again ran into ice for the third time and because of the heavy ice he was determined to sail west
to Asia. In July of 1609 Henry and his men found many inhospitable natives. One of Henry's crew
members was killed by them. In the late 1609 Hudson and his crew sailed by the island that is now
called Manhattan and into the Hudson River. His last journey was made in April of 1610. He set sail on
the ship Discovery. He found a strait in the ocean that led them over Canada, and the strait is now
named the Hudson Strait. When they sailed through the strait they came to a big bay which would later

Henry Hudson was an English explorer, who sailed along the North East coast of North American. His
early life is unknown, for there is not even a record of the year he was born. His final days are a
mystery, after his mutinous crew set him adrift in the bay that bears his name, June 1611. It is believed
that he could have been the grandson of a London alderman who helped found the Muscovy Company,
which is a trading company. Hudson took four voyages beginning in 1607 and continued to1611,
making claims for the English and the Dutch. At one point, he was arrested for working with the Dutch,
because in those days working for another country was considered treason. Hudson was also known as

Henry Hudson made several important discoveries. He founded the Hudson Bay and Hudson River. He
found the land that later became New York. He also helped to prove that the sun does not melt the ice at
the North Pole and that there is no passage through the Northeast to the Pacific. The countries that
sponsored him benefited though his discoveries. The area, today called New York, was settled and
colonized by the Dutch. As well as, the English whaling industry, which benefited for his discovery of
the whale, pods a Spitzbergen Islands.
Henry Hudson was an adventurous explorer. He started with a sponsorship from his native country
England, but when that was not available he worked for the Dutch. Even though he was arrested for
treason, because he was working for another country, he came back and was able to get hired by another
English company. He was determined to find a quick northern passage to the east for the benefit of the
trade industry. He faced many challenges in his travels. In the end, the toughest challenge he was not

Robert Cohn's guidebook The Purple Land, and the alcohol presence in Jake's life. Many times
throughout the book these themes can and do collide.
Many people, when they are 34, have life figured out, but not Robert Cohn. Robert grew up in America
to wealthy Jewish parents. During college, he was the middleweight boxing champion even though he
hated the sport, ( even if he was good at it), after Robert finished college, he married a nice lady, then
divorced a few years later. After Cohn's divorce, he met Francis, who convinced Cohn to go to Paris

Henry Hudson: A Hero To All Nations
Henry Hudson, a Hero to All Nations
Introduction
In the year of 1565, one of the greatest explorers in history was born. European Henry Hudson was born
to Henry Herdson Hudson II and Barbara Alderman. Hudson grew up being interested in navigating or
exploring different places. Not much is known about Hudson's early life, yet much is known about his
life later on when he accomplished many incredible things. Henry Hudson went on four major voyages
throughout his life, but only two out of the four trips were successful. Hudson's main goal throughout
his life was to find another route, a shorter and safer one, to Asia, specifically the Orient, countries
located within Eastern Asia. He wanted to find another route to the Orient because there ... Show more

One of Hudson's biggest mistakes might include the members that he decided to bring on his trips. The
main focus and trouble caused on Hudson's journeys all started from a man named Robert Juet, a skilled
navigator. Juet had a vile attitude and personality because he got annoyed and enraged frequently and
easily. To illustrate a more detailed event, Juet killed and mocked natives frequently whenever Hudson
and the crew got in contact with natives (Goodman 34). It is true Hudson could have stopped Juet from
acting like this so often, but Juet's actions are not part of Hudson's responsibility. With Juet's help on
aboard, Hudson and his crew sailed and navigated the oceans to many places located farther than any
European before had ever reached. Adding on, within their voyages with Juet, the men discovered not
just new pieces of land, yet they also discovered many whales and many bodies of water that were
unknown at that time. After the discovery of a large amount of whales in a certain area, the English
whaling industry had begun, thanks to Hudson's decision of having Juet aboard to help navigate
throughout the voyages (Smalley 10). To add on, during the explorations with Juet navigating, Hudson
and his crew have found various pieces of land that are now located in the United States. These
discovers then became the foundation of the founding

Who is he?
Henry Hudson was a navigator and sea explorer in the 17 century, who was born in 1565 England and
died after June 22 1611 nearby Hudson Bay Canada. Much is unknown about Hudson's birth but his
death came from a mutiny in the Hudson Bay (which was named after him) from his crew who casted
him and his son and some of the other crew with him adrift and have never been seen from that point
on.
Who and what country commissioned his voyages?
In 1607 the Muscovy Company in England hired Hudson to find the Northwest Passage from England
along the top of Canada to the pacific coast of Asia. But this didn't go to plan as they were forced back
due to pack ice and worsening conditions. But again the Muscovy Company wanted him to find the
route to the Indies but this time going to the east, along the top of Russia in 1608. Again this proved
unsuccessful forcing him back to Europe. In 1609 Hudson was chosen by the Dutch of The Dutch East
Trading Company to find a route to Asia through ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This started greater interest among Europe to explore the 'New World' and make claims on the newly
discovered land. Also after Hudson made his fateful exploration of the Hudson Bay it lead to a gigantic
fur trade to come to fruition in the area with the local people. The Hudson Bay Company grew the
lucrative trade to gain enough power to influence and alter the boundaries of North America. Also from
the further exploration of the Hudson Bay under then the English Flag by Henry Hudson, led to the
sudden claims of the new found land in Canada by the English. The Hudson Bay was soon became the
gateway to the Norwest passage from further explorations of the shorelines and local area. Which is
very interesting considering as at first there didn't seem to be a route found to from the Hudson bay to

Abstract
I am writing this paper on the court case of Hudson District School vs. Rowley. I will discuss those
involved in the case, what issues brought this case to trial, how and when the case was adjudicated, and
the final outcome of the trial. I will also tell how I feel about this case and what it accomplished for the

As the law states an IEP was prepared for Amy after her completion of her first year. The Individualized
Education Plan that was customized to meet Amy's needs stated that she was to utilize the FM

was also to meet with a speech therapist three times a week. Amy's parents agreed with parts of her IEP
but also felt that Amy needed a sign language instructor in every one of her classes. Amy did receive a

The Hendrick Hudson school district's "Committee on the Handicapped," had heard Amy's parents'

stated that once reviewing the evidence it was clear that Amy did not need an interpreter. The reasoning

Economies Of Scale And Scope
Economies of Scope:
Economies of scale and scope help producers lower their cost by producing the next unit of output at
lower costs this trend continues until production reaches a level of diseconomies of scale where
production is no longer running as efficient as it should. This tends to increase the barriers to entry for
new competitors as when they enter the market they will experience a higher cost of production. Why?
Solely because they have smaller economies of scale and cannot afford to sell the product at the same
price as other much larger firms. Generally, economies of scale and scope positively affect General
Electric. Since General Electric is one of the biggest conglomerates in the world it has the opportunity
to offer products and services through the same organization. These products might be highly unalike
but due to the wide range of businesses covered by GE the prospect is there. For example, GE, in order
to continue a healthy relationship with valued customers, has allowed the multimillion dollar purchase
of its jet engines to be financed over long periods of time. The catch is that these finance opportunities
are usually done via a leasing arrangement from GE Finance. In recent year GE has pursued a service
strategy when it comes to selling aircraft engines. They sell what they call "power by the hour" this
enables the private firm to indirectly rent the engine turbines, in return the firm would award GE with
maintenance contracts on the engines. This

I feel that the ultimately the Author of this article, Nigel M. Smith, wrote this article objectively and
without littering the article with his interpretations, his standpoints, or his analysis. My concern/question
that is still left unanswered from this article is why did Charlie Sheen pay so much just to keep his HIV
status a secret? I am left speculating that the reason was because he was still having sex without
informing his partners of being HIV Positive Status. If he had just revealed his diagnosis four years ago
when he initially became aware that he was HIV Positive, he would have saved himself millions of
dollars in blackmail that he paid out, and not to mention he would have had a reasonable defense (and
most likely sympathy) for his deplorable and highly publicized "meltdown" which was broadcasted all
over the television and the Internet. I personally am no fan of Charlie Sheen. He obviously suffers from
low self–esteem and self–worth just by his need to constantly have to call in porn stars and hookers. I
feel that he is a deranged arrogant individual with a filthy and vicious temper as his long history/records
of violence towards women has proven, and has such severe drug and alcohol issues that it has caused

Technological Improvements and Their Impact in America Essay
Improvements in agriculture, transportation, and communication between 1790 and 1860 were the
stepping stones for a greater America. From the cotton gin, to the steamboat, to the telegraph, new
innovations were appearing all over. America had finally begun to spread its wings and fly. Due to the
fact that cotton had to be separated by hand, it was costly commodity. One person could barely separate
a pound by hand over the course of a day. It was not until 1793, when Eli Whitney invented the cotton
gin that production of cotton soared. A worker on a plantation could now produce fifty pounds of cotton
a day, instead of just one. With the increase in cotton production, came the increase in slave labor, which

After fiddling with his horse–drawn machine for almost a decade, he was ready to market it. His
product sold so fast, that in 1847, he relocated to Chicago and built a manufacturing plant for his reapers
and mowers. He had sold thousands of machines within a few years, positively altering the scale of
agriculture. ?Using a hand–held sickle, a farmer could harvest half an acre of wheat a day, with a
McCormick reaper two people could work twelve acres a day.? (Tindall, 420) Transportation also saw
some advancements just as agriculture did. In 1795, the Wilderness Road was opened to wagon and
stagecoach traffic. The introduction of this road eased the journey through the Cumberland Gap into
Kentucky and along the Walton roads into Tennessee. After completion of the Philadelphia–Lancaster
Turnpike in 1794, a movement for graded and paved roads in the northeast gathered momentum. By
1831, around four thousand miles of turnpikes had been completed, mostly connecting the eastern cities.
At the same time, new developments in water transportation were made that included the river
steamboat and the canal barge, which carried people and commodities for a lower price than the wagons
on the National Road. The Clermont, sent up the Hudson River to Albany by Robert Fulton and Robert
R. Livingston, was the first commercially successful steamboat. Thereafter, steamboat usage spread
rapidly to other eastern rivers as well as to the Ohio

journal not only did this help to let people know about the new "cool stuff" out there, but it also helped
to expand the knowledge around the voyages themselves. His journeys helped to widen the field to new

Amy Carmichael: Someone Who Gave Their All for the Lord
Amy Beatrice Carmichael is an amazing example of someone who gave their all for the Lord. She did
things that no one else could or would do. She showed Christ to some of the important little world,
children. Amy grew up, lived an amazing life, and went to be with her Lord. Amy Carmichael was born
on December 16, 1867 in Millisle, Northern Island into a Christian home. She was born the first of six
siblings, Amy, Norman, Ernest, Eva, Ethel, Walter, and Alfred. The family was not sentimental at all in
their love, but the children knew exactly what was right. In their eyes, right was right, and wrong was
wrong. They knew that their parent's word was law. They also knew that if they did not follow that law,
they would get some kind of punishment. Most of the time it would be one of these five: standing in the
corner, forbidden to go play, slapped, pandied, which is being slapped in the hand by a flat ebony ruler,
or given Gregory powder. Even though they were held in strict compliance to rules, they were a highly
religious family. Every night everyone in the family had to attend devotions. They went to church on
Sundays and Wednesdays. It was very obvious that Amy knew that Jesus answers prayer because at the
age of three years old she learned a lesson from praying that she would never forget.

Why Did The Erie Canal Change America
We come up with many ways to make our country better, to make it the best country out there and the
thing that really came close to completely changing America for the better was the Erie Canal. Many
people ask how did the Erie canal change America, well not only did it build one of the biggest most
successful city in the world but it help us with trade and money. Many problems came along with the
Erie Canal like the dangerous of making it as we had to use explosives. Other problems were the growth
in population, population wasn't a problem but because of such high population that came with the Erie
Canal transportation was horrible but like many other thing the Erie canal solved its own problem. The
Erie canal changed America for the better, growing is population, making it money, and building one of
the most successful city in the world.
When the Erie Canal was completed, although not supported at the start proved to be one the greatest
thing that has happened to America. One of the thing that made the Erie Canal great was that it boosted
trade miraculously. The Erie canal made it cheaper for Midwest farmers to bring their crops to the New

New York and the entire country. Once the Erie Canal opened, shipping costs from New York to the
Midwest dropped from $100 a ton to less than $10 a ton, and the time it took to ship the goods was cut
down by a third. This greatly increased trade for New York City businesses. Many settlers used the
canal to travel to upstate New York and points farther west. This influx of people opened up new
markets for New York City businesses. It also increased the financial and physical growth of cities along
the canal route. Many people ask "so what we could have waited for

Henry Hudson Research Paper
Starting sometime in the beginning of the sixteenth century, a large land mass located along the Atlantic
coast of North America attracted foreigners to its shores. One of the first of these foreigners, Italian
navigator, Giovanni da Verrazano arrived in 1524, exploring the coastline for France. Eighty–five years
later, in 1609 a Dutchman, Henry Hudson, explored the coastline for England. Fifteen years later, some
of the first settlers arrived in North America. Dutch explorer, Cornelis Jacobsen May along with thirty
Dutch families settled along the Delaware on Burlington Island. Other Dutch settlements would soon
follow (Lurie). Eventually this lead to the Dutch establishing the township of Newark. The township of
Newark was settled in 1666 ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Once completion the canal would allow navigation between Phillipsburg and Newark. Eleven hundred
laborers, engineers, carpenters, and stonemasons were employed to construct the canal. The project
would attract immigrants from Ireland, who earned one dollar per day as unskilled laborers (Tuttle).
Newark factories also employed many unskilled Irish laborers to do dirty work jobs for the leather
manufacturers and the hat making industry. Although the Irish workers were needed, the native born
Protestants living in Newark did not welcome them. The Irish workers were viewed by the Protestants
as "lower class" and a nuisance. There were many clashes between the two groups, many leading to
violence. In 1834, during the first St. Patrick's Day parade in Newark, spectators catcalled the marching
Irish. In 1853, an Irish Catholic procession to celebrate the installation of Newark's first bishop was met
with a Protestant protest. In 1854, Irish laborers working in Newark on the Morris and Essex Railroad
were attacked by vigilantes. In some cases, the clashes were also among the Irish themselves. Violent
conflicts often occurred between Irish Catholics and the Protestant Irish

Connecting with Nature in Rip Van Winkle, Thanatopsis, and...
Romanticism is the involvement of emotion, fantasy, and intuition in a story. It happens to be the
opposite of rationalism which involves logic, reason, and rationality in a story. There happens to be five
romantic elements to choose from. They include: dissatisfaction with city life, desire to connect with
nature, concern of individualism, nostalgia for the past, and supernatural interest. Of the six stories we
could choose from all of them have some part of romanticism in them in one way or another. I chose to
express a desire to connect with nature in "Rip Van Winkle", "Thanatopsis", and Walden. Rip Van
Winkle desires to leave his nagging wife, driving him into the woods revealing a gorgeous, woodland
landscape and a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"Rip Van Winkle" describes multiple images that make it a story with a deep desire to connect with
nature. In the poem "Thanatopsis" the desire to connect with nature is expressed throughout. Unlike
"Rip Van Winkle," Thanatopsis has a very deep meaning within it, not just a whimsical story. The poem
explains that we as humans should embrace death and know that we are a part of the ever cycling earth.
We have a bigger purpose. William Cullen Bryant personified nature in his poem. He made nature
woman–like by calling nature her and she. "To him who in the love of Nature holds Communion with
her visible forms, she speaks a various language..." (171) He also expressed this beautiful simplicity and
vulnerability to nature and man. "The hills rock–ribbed and ancient as the sun, – the vales stretching in
pensive quietness between; the venerable woods – rivers that move in majesty, and the complaining
brooks that make the meadows green..." (171) This poem seems to connect with nature in a different
way. It's almost like it embodies nature along with human to create a smooth transition or meld of the
two, and I think that is what creates the desire to connect with nature for the poem. Walden expresses
the desire to connect with nature differently then "Rip Van Winkle", and "Thanatopsis." It may not have
the whimsical story or a spiritually deeper meaning,

The Men Who Built America Essay
Much credit was given to six men, for creating the foundation of America. The first 4 were Cornelius
Vanderbilt, John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, and J.P. Morgan. Through shipping and trains, oil
and its development, steel and construction, and corporate finance, these men constructed the
foundation of our country. Through their careers, these men saw much change during prosperous times
that effected business then and ultimately in the long run. Cornelius Vanderbilt was an American
industrialist and philanthropist. His claim to fame and fortune was through shipping and railroads,
becoming one of the richest men in American history. Vanderbilt took an interest in railroads in the

Andrew Carnegie was an industrialist who led the expansion of the steel industry in America. He made
his fortune in the steel industry, controlling the most iron and steel operations ever owned by any
individual in America. In the 1880's, his steel company was the largest manufacturer in the world of pig
iron, steel rails, and coke. The company had the capacity to produce about 2,000 tons of pig metal per
day. In 1892, he launched the Carnegie Steel Company which was combined of Homestead Steel Works
and a line of lake steamships which he bought in 1888. In all, by 1889, Carnegie's empire consisted of
Edgar Thomson Steel Works, The Lucy Furnaces, Pittsburgh Bessemer Steel Works, the Union Iron
Mills, the Keystone Bridge Works, the Union Mill, Hartman Steel Works, the Frick Coke company and
the Scotia ore mines. In 1901, Carnegie was 91 and considering retirement. He made all the necessary
preparations to his end and made negotiations with J.P. Morgan to sell his company. March 2, 1901, the
United States Steel Corporation was formed and was the first corporation in the world with a market
capitalization over $1 billion (History.com). While Andrew Carnegie was building his steel empire, he
realized that in order to exceed production, he would have to make some changes. In 1892, labor

For my civic engagement project I attended the State of the State Address hosted by Governor Andrew
Cuomo. The event was held at SUNY Purchase and filled with many politicians, students, educators,
reporters, and many other adults. You can feel the excitement in the room from everyone who wanted to
hear what our Governor had to say about his agenda for this year. Once he came out on stage after being
introduced, the crowd went wild everyone was happy to see him. He started off his speech trying to
keep the positive environment that was already set; Governor Cuomo told everyone what the State of
the State exactly was and told us about what our state has already accomplished. He brought up how we
were the first big state to legalize marriage equality, paid family leave, and raising the minimum wage
and now other states are following us across the nation. We were told also about unemployment rate
decreasing from 8.4 to 5.1 and broke the myth that only democrats are big spenders showing the past
governors both democratic and republic all spending a lot, but still within range of each other. Cuomo
wanted to explain that the government was taking a big chunk of money out of our paychecks because

What Was the Transportation Revolution, Why Was It Needed...
The Transportation Revolution began in the early 1800's as an effort to dramatically improve
transportation in America. The Transportation Revolution included greatly improved roads, the
development of canals, and the invention of the steamboat and railroad. In 1800, there were only 23
cities with over 100,000 citizens by 1900 there were 135 cities with over 100,000 citizens. There were
several types of cities: cities that focused on the textile industry, cities that produced whiskey and hemp,
and other southern cities that produced agriculture crops. The Industrial Revolution is one of the major
causes of the Transportation Revolution; each of the three economic regions needed an affordable yet
fast means of transporting their goods to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The road initially was a free road but soon became a toll road. Although these roads helped, shipping
freight across them was expensive.
Next introduced were steamboats. Shipping by steamboats was cheaper and faster. If one used a wagon,
there was the cost of lifting the cargo off the ground and keeping it there as well as the cost of moving
the vehicle forward. A water vessel had the advantage of only having the cost of moving forward
because the water lifted the cargo. The shallow draft steamboat, however, could carry large amounts of
cargo even against the flow of a river. Robert Fulton's Clermont proved the practicality of steamboats in
1807. The Enterprise was introduced by Henry Shreve in 1814 and proved to be the answer to
transportation across shallow western waters. By 1820, there were 60 steamboats on the Ohio and
Mississippi rivers and countless others elsewhere.
Steamboats could ply the waters of lakes and rivers but could not go where there was no waterway so
people built canals. The first successful canal was The Erie Canal in New York stretching from the
Hudson River at Albany, New York westward to Buffalo, New York. The canal on Lake Erie stretched
364 miles and operated twenty–four hours a day seven days a week, opening the old Northwest and
connecting it to New York Harbor. Its production started in 1817; it turned a profit long before it was
finished in 1825. It sparked a canal boom as others tried to mimic

My First Voyage Henry Hudson
I, Henry Hudson, have had a reputation for exploring new ways and directions. As an English explorer, I
have felt the need to find the Northwest Passage and seek everything and every visual in it. It is the
beginning of 1607, and I am about to start my first voyage after getting the job of attempting to perceive
a smaller path to the riches of Asia from Europe via Arctic Ocean. I have obtained high hopes for my
commitments, and I am certainly not going to give up. I am acquiring high hopes after a fresh,
educational start after graduating from Harvard, but I did have to be a cabin boy for many years in my
childhood, from when I was born in 1565. Hopefully, my life will get a bit easier to handle as I am

I honestly think that it was part of the Lord's act, as I would encourage the crew to pray everyday.
Eventually, spring came along, and the ice cleared up. Even though everything was starting to develop,
the crew was in bad shape, vomiting and coughing spit all over the place. I had a conflict on my hands.
It was either me continuing the journey to find the passage, or turning back home for these people to get
help. I was leaning towards the continuing side, but my son was in bad shape, so I hesitated for a long
time. A few months later, in June of 1611, much of my crew had mutinied, and I knew I was going to be
swindled. As a matter of fact, much of my crew left by getting on the large vessel. I sent my son with
them, because I wanted him to live for a long time. After that event, I was only left with seven others,
and it would only take until the end of that year to run out of food, and the water in the river was too
cold to drink. Much of the water was ice, and we were really in a tight gap. A month later, my focus
came off of the crew and I dozed off and hit the floor of the ship, blacking out and

The Hudson River and PCB Pollution Essay
The Hudson River and PCB Pollution The Hudson River is a body of water that stretches for 315 miles
from the Adirondack Mountains to the Battery in Manhattan, reaching its deepest point of 216 feet in
the Highlands near Constitution Island and West Point and reaches its widest point of 3 miles across at
Havestraw. This river is one of the most beautiful and scenic of the Tri–State area. Unfortunately, it
happens to be New York's most polluted river. The river has been influenced upon since the early
1600's, when Englishman Henry Hudson commanded the Dutch ship Half Moon on an exploration of
the river, certain that he had discovered a trade route to China. It soon dawned that this was no Atlantic–

From 1947 to 1977, these two plants legally discharged from 500,000 to 1.5 million pounds of PCBs
into the Hudson, and unknowingly saturated the bedrock beneath both sites with at least that much
again. There are PCBs in Hudson River water, biota, and sediment from Hudson Falls to New York City
– 200 miles that comprise the nations largest Superfund site. Pure PCBs are oozing out of the bedrock to
this day, constantly recontaminating the river and over 300,000 pounds remain concentrated in bottom
sediments of the river today. The spread of PCBs throughout the Hudson River and the food chain,
which it supports, has created one of the most extensive hazardous waste problems in the nation.
Polychlorinated biphenyl's (PCBs) are a group of synthetic oil–like chemicals (therefore insoluble in
water) of the organochlorine family. Until their toxic nature was recognized and their use was banned in
the 1970s, they were widely used as insulation in electrical equipment, particularly transformers.
Reputable chemists have since concluded, "it was probably a mistake ever to make or use PCBs." These
are serious poisons, which have been shown to cause damage to the reproductive, neurological and
immune systems of wildlife and humans and are known to cause cancer. Exposure has also been linked
to behavioral damage. Specifically, because PCBs in the body mimic estrogen, women of childbearing
age and their infants are particularly susceptible

Essay Henry Hudson in Comparison to Samuel de Champlain
Henry Hudson and Samuel de Champlain were two great explorers. Both were born around 1570 and
were sons of sea captains . However, even though they both have similarities from how they were
brought up, their voyages were very different from one another. Even the types of explorers they were
are different from each other. Not a lot is known about Henry Hudson's personal life. What we do know
is that he was married to a woman named Katherine and they had three sons together. Also, it is said the
Hudson was most likely to have come from a wealthy family and apparently his grandfather discovered
a trading company named the "Muscovy Company . Henry Hudson's first voyage was made in 1607

Henry Hudson wanted to do the job that he was hired to do and make sure that he found what he was
supposed to be looking for. Although Hudson was not capable of making his dreams a reality, without
him, New York City may not have been founded for who knows how much longer. Also, due to his
discovery of the Hudson Bay, Hudson is considered to be someone crucial to the founding of Canada.
Actually, when Hudson discovered the Hudson Bay he believed it to be a passage into the Pacific. This
is because the Hudson is large enough to create tidal waves. Even though some people think that
Hudson is a failure, because he never found a faster water route to Asia, he was seen as a very
respectable and smart navigator. His ships always made it back safe to the people that invested in his
voyages and now there are more bodies of water named after him than any other person to have ever
lived . Samuel de Champlain was born in 1570 and was a French explorer. One way in which
Champlain differs from Henry Hudson is that Hudson was born in England and Champlain was born in
France. Champlain is believed to have been born a protestant but when he got older he converted to
Catholicism. Similar to Hudson, not much is known about his earliest years. Champlain used to travel
with his Uncle to places such as Spain and the West Indies; these were some of the first voyages that he
ever made. Also, during the time period of 1601–1603,

Pobs Environmental Effects
Water pollution has been a growing concern in the United States, from the BP oil spill to the Flint water
crisis, because of the adverse effects it can have on the environment and the health effects in humans
and animals. Polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, were used widely as coolants and lubricants in
transformers, capacitors, and other electrical equipment. The manufacture of PCBs stopped in the
United States in October 1977 because of evidence that PCBs accumulate in the environment and may
cause health hazards for humans. This research paper will attempt to discuss the dumping of PCBs into
the Hudson River by General Electric, the health effects, and the NYS Department of Health and the US

One way PCBs are detrimental to human health is the developmental effects that are seen in the
offspring of women who were exposed to PCBs before or during pregnancy. These women in particular
are at higher risk of giving birth to children that have major neurological and motor control problems,
including lowered IQ and poor short–term memory. A group of children in Michigan whose mothers had
been exposed to PCBs were found to have decreased birth weight and head size, lowered performance
on standardized memory, psychomotor and behavioral tests, and lowered IQ (Jacobson and Jacobson
1996). Another group of women exposed to PCBs in upstate New York due to the nature of their jobs
had shorter pregnancies and gave birth to children with lower birth weight. Research has also shown
that women who consumed PCB–contaminated fish from Lake Ontario were found to have shortened
menstrual cycles (Mendola et al 1997). PCBs are also thought to play a role in reduced sperm counts,

During the eighteen hundreds how did the simple transportation device of steamboats affect the political

During this time the United States was in desperate need of a new sufficient source of transportation, the
steamboat allowed a large expansion of the growing nation, through its many natural waterways, as well
as man made canals that were soon constructed. Serving as a great tool for businesses and the

It is believed by many people that Robert Fulton was the first to invent the steamboat, although he was
truly the one to create the first competent vessel, designed and created well enough to make decent
voyages, including fighting currents. In the oncoming future, there were still plenty of modifications to
be made, but Fulton along with Robert R. Livingston brought their new steam ship plans to the United
States from France; after Livingston obtained a New York state steam boat monopoly, in hope to control
the water ways of one of the largest ports of the time. In 1798 Livingston received this monopoly
allowing him the exclusive ability of "navigating all boats that might be propelled by steam, on all

act give Fulton and Livingston the complete control of navigating the waters of New York State but the
ability to also seize any other vessel operated by others with out the license that only these two men
could distribute as well as the collecting of a fine for the penalty of operating a vessel against the law.
The partnership and monopolistic control of Livingston and Fulton began on the maiden voyage of their

Introduction
Missionary expansion throughout the centuries has taken a hard, often violent road. The expansion of
Christianity begins with the adherents of Jesus Christ and ended with the premature demise of many of
the disciples. In the centuries following the disciples, many missionaries were faced with percussion and
death as the gospel was proclaimed. As missionary expansion occurs throughout the centuries, often
times facing trial and difficulty, the question comes up; is the capital cost of missionary expansion worth
the monetary value? This paper will highlight many trials that have been faced by three missionaries in
particular and explain often by the words of these missionaries why the enormous cost of missionary
expansion is worth the cost. The thesis of this paper is: everyone is called to preach the gospel; the
calling of the missionary is called to live by faith even when facing difficulty.

Reflection On Henry Hudson Trail
This year for service day I traveled to the Henry Hudson Trail, which is part of the Monmouth County
Park system, in order to pick up trash and clean off the trail. This particular location I visited for service
day does not have a specific mission; however this trail offers New Jersey residents the opportunity to
be immersed in nature and enjoy beauty of this state. At this location I expected to see a lot of trash and
dirt that needed to be attended too and cleaned up which was our job. At this trail, about 10 students and
myself walked the trail in the very cold weather picking up trash and cleaning up all the items that
people left behind. Even though the trail did contain some a lot of litter and the weather was very brutal,
the trail was a beautiful location full of lively colors and beautiful trees that made the trip somewhat

Why Is Henry Hudson A Hero?
My explorer Henry Hudson should be displayed as a hero in your museum exhibit. I'm gonna give you
three reasons why you would consider him as a hero. And also be displayed in the museum.
Reason number one is that he helped start the fur trade. The fur trade played a major role in the
development of the united states and canada. With the fur trade you could make hats and clothes to
wear. And The fur trade also gave indians tools, and weapons to use. So with the fur trade the indians

Age Of Exploration Christopher Columbus
The Age of Exploration was a period of time from the 15th to 17th centuries where explorers started to
explore new lands and territories in order to find new trade routes. Europeans went west to explore and
claim the new world for their countries. The renaissance influenced these explorers to find new lands
and the reformation also influenced European explorers to spread their religion and try to convert others
to Christianity. Some of the most influential and key explores in this time period where Christopher
Columbus, Henry Hudson and Hernan Cortes.
Christopher Columbus was the one of the most influential explorers in the Age of Exploration. He was
the first European to explore the Americas. Columbus set off on his journey south from Palos Spain
with 3 ships. He believed that he would reach the edge of Japan in 10 days if he sailed west to uncharted
territory. Instead of being on the water for 10 days, he was on the water for about 30 days and he found
the americas. He landed in the bahamas and then claimed it for Spain. Christopher Columbus should be
viewed as a villain in history because he killed millions of the native Americans with disease and
overworking them. He captured thousands of natives and made them into slaves. He also set in motion
the Africans being put in the slavery. Even though he discovered the Americas he murdered many lives.
Christopher Columbus be a villain in history because of his horrible actions towards the native people.

The Erie Canal Linked Transportation and Trade in the...
The Erie canal was very important to the United States. It was designed to link our nation through
transportation and trade and was the fastest way to transport goods. It also linked many parts of the
country. The Erie Canal was a vital part of Henry Clay's plan known as the American System, which
was designed to link our nation through trade and transportation.
The canal that links the waters of Lake Erie to the west of the Hudson River in the east, is the Erie
Canal. The Erie Canal is an example of Henry Clay's vision to harmonize and balance the country's
agriculture, economy and industries. The building of this canal was first proposed in 1808 and was
eventually completed in 1824. At the time, New York State Governor De Witt Clinton envisioned a
canal that would link Albany to Buffalo. The idea was criticized by some and given the name "Clinton's
ditch". The idea turned out to be a critical turning point for the country since it opened up many new
possibilities. In the early 19th century the transportation of goods between the east and west was
expensive and time consuming. The normal way of transportation before the canal, was by horse drawn
carriages. Then the bold idea of the Erie Canal was proposed to ease the tiring commute. The Erie canal
was intentionally built to open the country west of the Appalachian Mountains to settlers. The canal
would also provide a safe, cheaper way for produce to be carried to various markets. The canal then
became the fastest way

Henry Hudson Accomplishments

  • 1. Henry Hudson Accomplishments Have you ever imagined having to go on a voyage for the queen of England? Well, there was one person named Henry Hudson who did. He did many things during his lifetime. He had a pretty amazing life. Henry Hudson's early life, life accomplishments, and his death are all important factors in England's history. Henry Hudson was born in the 16th century between 1565–1570. He was born from an English family and got his name from his grandfather Henry Hudson. He had four brothers. They are Edward Hudson, Christopher Hudson, John Hudson and Thomas Hudson. In Henry Hudson's early life, he had a very well educated young life. Henry Hudson had one wife named Katherine. They had three sons John, Oliver, Richard Hudson. Henry Hudson had a lot of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Analysis Of The Poem ' Casting Into The Unknown ' By... 16 Reflection paper #2 I saw the glistening sunlight enhanced the silky fabric that cascaded the Earth around us, while the frigid dew and vigorous winds dampened the air. Despite my pervious exposure to the Hudson River during our first walking trip, standing in the dock allowed me to absorb the beautiful landscape and gives me a different experience then looking at maps. I can only imagine what was going through Harry Hudson's and Giovanni da Verrazzano's mind as they stumbled upon this estuary. The water completely fascinates people, including myself, and like our assigned class reading "Casting into the Unknown" by Marcelo Gleiser, the author alludes to the ocean as a representation of his collective identity, sense of freedom and mystery. But most importantly, water is a symbol of a portal into the unknown. After reading the article, I am able to relate it into our FBL activity and our class discussion. In my opinion, the water in the Huston river, represents a portal into the past. The same breathing taking sight I saw would've been similar to that sight in the 1800s. Although the water way has significantly reduced over time, the Houston river is one of the physical connection that bridged me to the past and see what it was like. As we learned in class, the Lenapes were one of the native American tribes that were the first settlers in New York. I want to be able to link the Lenape's way of life and how they survived off the landscape. Historically, works of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Grid Pl A Comparison Of Two Cities Cities are very complex, large spaces. Every city is different, but many of them do share similar qualities. Bristol, Rhode Island, Albany, New York, and Troy, New York are three good examples of this. All three cities are waterfront cities and are laid out in a grid plan. Laying cities out in a grid plan is done for many reasons such as, it's easily navigable, it's walkable, and it's economical meaning one can do the most with the least amount of space. The grid layout is a key commonality between Bristol, Albany, and Troy; however, they are all still very different. Bristol, Rhode Island was founded in 1747 and was known for its slave trading and rubber company. Bristol is essentially a peninsula, and thus it's a very good location for trading. ... Bristol's grid runs north to south with one road that's parallel to the water, Albany's grid runs parallel to the water, and Troy's grid also runs parallel to the water. Bristol has a fairly balanced city regarding where all the important buildings are, Albany's are all in one area in the Empire State Plaza, and Troy's are also very spread out around the city despite RPI being in the middle of it. Over millions of years, these have contributed to building up many islands including Staten Island, Hoffman Island, Swinburne Island and many others. The very low slope of the Hudson plays a great role in the amount of discharge and island buildup, too, as it only rises about 0.24 inches per mile for the last 150 miles of the rivers path. To give some perspective, the Mississippi river rises approximately 6 inches per mile during its course, and discharges about 700 million tons of sediment per year into the Gulf of Mexico 2 Coarse cobble point bars are essentially pointed cobble that has been piled into bar like formations. Further data of his past life is nonexistent, but he was married with three kids and lived in England. Hudson was born around circa 1565. Hudson went on four voyages to discover a Northern trade route from England to the china. Instead he found a shorter route to the Americas. His boat was named Hopewell. He started his voyages in 1607, on his first two voyages he was blocked by ice and had to turn around. Along theses voyages Henry Hudson impacted the world we live in today. The Hudson bay was named after Henry because he discovered the bay. On his third and fourth voyage he used rumors of routes. The Moscovy Company had funded Henrys voyage. Henry's first and second voyage didn't involve too much excitement. Along his first and second voyages he embarked upon empty dreams and failure. • 8. In A Flood Inside Me Analysis At the start of the book Ed is simply existing. He's not living, "I cook. I eat. I wash but rarely iron. I live in the past and believe that Cindy Crawford is by far the best supermodel. That's my life." (p.20) This is a sentence that I feel really shows who Ed is at the beginning. He more or less does the same thing every day in sort of a monotone way. Throughout the cards and difficulties that Ed goes through, we really start to see a person emerging out of Ed. We see someone who is feeling and hoping and living. "In a flood inside me....three minutes straight." (pg.351) This change that we see in Ed happens progressively. Each card and task that is given to Ed brings out something in him that in the beginning we didn't see often. During the first chapter it doesn't seem that Ed has a lot of fears. When we were first introduced to him during the bank robbery scene I perceived him to be quite stupid. Then, we got to know him a little more and I saw that he was afraid, afraid of not doing anything with his life. "Just prior to the bank robbery, I'd been taking stock of my life. To illustrate a more detailed event, Juet killed and mocked natives frequently whenever Hudson and the crew got in contact with natives (Goodman 34). It is true Hudson could have stopped Juet from acting like this so often, but Juet's actions are not part of Hudson's responsibility. With Juet's help on aboard, Hudson and his crew sailed and navigated the oceans to many places located farther than any European before had ever reached. Adding on, within their voyages with Juet, the men discovered not just new pieces of land, yet they also discovered many whales and many bodies of water that were unknown at that time. After the discovery of a large amount of whales in a certain area, the English whaling industry had begun, thanks to Hudson's decision of having Juet aboard to help navigate throughout the voyages (Smalley 10). Much is unknown about Hudson's birth but his death came from a mutiny in the Hudson Bay (which was named after him) from his crew who casted him and his son and some of the other crew with him adrift and have never been seen from that point on. Who and what country commissioned his voyages? In 1607 the Muscovy Company in England hired Hudson to find the Northwest Passage from England along the top of Canada to the pacific coast of Asia. But this didn't go to plan as they were forced back due to pack ice and worsening conditions. Henry Hudson School vs. Rowley Essay Henry Hudson School vs. Rowley Henry Hudson School vs. Rowley Diana Arrowood Grand Canyon University: SPE–350 August 31, 2012 Abstract I am writing this paper on the court case of Hudson District School vs. Rowley. Amy's parents agreed with parts of her IEP but also felt that Amy needed a sign language instructor in every one of her classes. Amy did receive a therapist for a two week trial while attending kindergarten but it was decided she did not need this service in order to do her studies. The Hendrick Hudson school district's "Committee on the Handicapped," had heard Amy's parents' expert evidence that stated Amy needed the interpreter, the "Committee on the Handicapped also spoke with Amy's teachers, and visited a class for the deaf. • 15. Economies Of Scale And Scope Economies of Scope: Economies of scale and scope help producers lower their cost by producing the next unit of output at lower costs this trend continues until production reaches a level of diseconomies of scale where production is no longer running as efficient as it should. This tends to increase the barriers to entry for new competitors as when they enter the market they will experience a higher cost of production. Why? Solely because they have smaller economies of scale and cannot afford to sell the product at the same price as other much larger firms. Generally, economies of scale and scope positively affect General Electric. Since General Electric is one of the biggest conglomerates in the world it has the opportunity to offer products and services through the same organization. These products might be highly unalike but due to the wide range of businesses covered by GE the prospect is there. For example, GE, in order to continue a healthy relationship with valued customers, has allowed the multimillion dollar purchase of its jet engines to be financed over long periods of time. The catch is that these finance opportunities are usually done via a leasing arrangement from GE Finance. In recent year GE has pursued a service strategy when it comes to selling aircraft engines. They sell what they call "power by the hour" this enables the private firm to indirectly rent the engine turbines, in return the firm would award GE with maintenance contracts on the engines. My concern/question that is still left unanswered from this article is why did Charlie Sheen pay so much just to keep his HIV status a secret? I am left speculating that the reason was because he was still having sex without informing his partners of being HIV Positive Status. If he had just revealed his diagnosis four years ago when he initially became aware that he was HIV Positive, he would have saved himself millions of dollars in blackmail that he paid out, and not to mention he would have had a reasonable defense (and most likely sympathy) for his deplorable and highly publicized "meltdown" which was broadcasted all over the television and the Internet. I personally am no fan of Charlie Sheen. He obviously suffers from low self–esteem and self–worth just by his need to constantly have to call in porn stars and hookers. Technological Improvements and Their Impact in America Essay Improvements in agriculture, transportation, and communication between 1790 and 1860 were the stepping stones for a greater America. From the cotton gin, to the steamboat, to the telegraph, new innovations were appearing all over. America had finally begun to spread its wings and fly. Due to the fact that cotton had to be separated by hand, it was costly commodity. One person could barely separate a pound by hand over the course of a day. It was not until 1793, when Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin that production of cotton soared. A worker on a plantation could now produce fifty pounds of cotton a day, instead of just one. With the increase in cotton production, came the increase in slave labor, which was used to harvest the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... (Tindall, 420) Transportation also saw some advancements just as agriculture did. In 1795, the Wilderness Road was opened to wagon and stagecoach traffic. The introduction of this road eased the journey through the Cumberland Gap into Kentucky and along the Walton roads into Tennessee. After completion of the Philadelphia–Lancaster Turnpike in 1794, a movement for graded and paved roads in the northeast gathered momentum. By 1831, around four thousand miles of turnpikes had been completed, mostly connecting the eastern cities. At the same time, new developments in water transportation were made that included the river steamboat and the canal barge, which carried people and commodities for a lower price than the wagons on the National Road. The Clermont, sent up the Hudson River to Albany by Robert Fulton and Robert R. Livingston, was the first commercially successful steamboat. Amy Carmichael was born on December 16, 1867 in Millisle, Northern Island into a Christian home. She was born the first of six siblings, Amy, Norman, Ernest, Eva, Ethel, Walter, and Alfred. "Rip Van Winkle" describes multiple images that make it a story with a deep desire to connect with nature. In the poem "Thanatopsis" the desire to connect with nature is expressed throughout. Unlike "Rip Van Winkle," Thanatopsis has a very deep meaning within it, not just a whimsical story. The poem explains that we as humans should embrace death and know that we are a part of the ever cycling earth. We have a bigger purpose. William Cullen Bryant personified nature in his poem. He made nature woman–like by calling nature her and she. "To him who in the love of Nature holds Communion with her visible forms, she speaks a various language..." (171) He also expressed this beautiful simplicity and vulnerability to nature and man. "The hills rock–ribbed and ancient as the sun, – the vales stretching in pensive quietness between; the venerable woods – rivers that move in majesty, and the complaining brooks that make the meadows green..." (171) This poem seems to connect with nature in a different way. It's almost like it embodies nature along with human to create a smooth transition or meld of the two, and I think that is what creates the desire to connect with nature for the poem. If one used a wagon, there was the cost of lifting the cargo off the ground and keeping it there as well as the cost of moving the vehicle forward. A water vessel had the advantage of only having the cost of moving forward because the water lifted the cargo. The shallow draft steamboat, however, could carry large amounts of cargo even against the flow of a river. Robert Fulton's Clermont proved the practicality of steamboats in 1807. The Enterprise was introduced by Henry Shreve in 1814 and proved to be the answer to transportation across shallow western waters. One prop I remember is the purple piano every time the glee club saw one they just started singing on it to get more people to join the club. The stereotype makes kids believe that if you're tall and have big muscles that means you can be a footballer but Finn kind of breaks the stereotype because he is in the glee club and when a big footballer join that club people instantly think that he isn't cool anymore and he gets laughed at which shouldn't happen if you join a different club to what your friends aren't in. The real life consequences that will happen to the plastics will be that there phone will be taken off them because when you're at school in the middle of a PE lesson you can't just pull out your phone and talk to your friends. During this time the United States was in desperate need of a new sufficient source of transportation, the steamboat allowed a large expansion of the growing nation, through its many natural waterways, as well as man made canals that were soon constructed. It is believed by many people that Robert Fulton was the first to invent the steamboat, although he was truly the one to create the first competent vessel, designed and created well enough to make decent voyages, including fighting currents. In the oncoming future, there were still plenty of modifications to be made, but Fulton along with Robert R. Livingston brought their new steam ship plans to the United States from France; after Livingston obtained a New York state steam boat monopoly, in hope to control the water ways of one of the largest ports of the time. In 1798 Livingston received this monopoly allowing him the exclusive ability of "navigating all boats that might be propelled by steam, on all waters within the territory, or jurisdiction of the State, for the term of twenty years." Not only did this act give Fulton and Livingston the complete control of navigating the waters of New York State but the ability to also seize any other vessel operated by others with out the license that only these two men could distribute as well as the collecting of a fine for the penalty of operating a vessel against the law. The partnership and monopolistic control of Livingston and Fulton began on the maiden voyage of their one hundred and fifty foot steamship known as the Clermont on August 18, 1807. • 38. Reflection On Henry Hudson Trail This year for service day I traveled to the Henry Hudson Trail, which is part of the Monmouth County Park system, in order to pick up trash and clean off the trail. This particular location I visited for service day does not have a specific mission; however this trail offers New Jersey residents the opportunity to be immersed in nature and enjoy beauty of this state. At this location I expected to see a lot of trash and dirt that needed to be attended too and cleaned up which was our job. At this trail, about 10 students and myself walked the trail in the very cold weather picking up trash and cleaning up all the items that people left behind. Even though the trail did contain some a lot of litter and the weather was very brutal, the trail was a beautiful location full of lively colors and beautiful trees that made the trip somewhat enjoyable. Through my volunteering at the Henry Hudson Trail, I now understand better the problem of littering. Before this experience, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even though I have not acquired a love for cleaning up trails, this service opportunity still has been very worthwhile. Through this location, I learned the importance of a clean environment and how much of a burden litter really is not only for nature but also for people whose job it is to clean up the environment. I have gained a better understanding of nature and litter which will help me in the future to be more aware and help the world be a cleaner ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 41. The Erie Canal Linked Transportation and Trade in the... The Erie canal was very important to the United States. It was designed to link our nation through transportation and trade and was the fastest way to transport goods. It also linked many parts of the country. The Erie Canal was a vital part of Henry Clay's plan known as the American System, which was designed to link our nation through trade and transportation. The canal that links the waters of Lake Erie to the west of the Hudson River in the east, is the Erie Canal. The Erie Canal is an example of Henry Clay's vision to harmonize and balance the country's agriculture, economy and industries. The building of this canal was first proposed in 1808 and was eventually completed in 1824. At the time, New York State Governor De Witt Clinton envisioned a canal that would link Albany to Buffalo. The idea was criticized by some and given the name "Clinton's ditch". The idea turned out to be a critical turning point for the country since it opened up many new possibilities. In the early 19th century the transportation of goods between the east and west was expensive and time consuming. The normal way of transportation before the canal, was by horse drawn carriages. Then the bold idea of the Erie Canal was proposed to ease the tiring commute. The Erie canal was intentionally built to open the country west of the Appalachian Mountains to settlers. The canal would also provide a safe, cheaper way for produce to be carried to various markets. The canal then became the fastest way ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
