  2. 2. Early Life <ul><li>Born in 1565 in London, England. </li></ul><ul><li>Spent childhood on the Pampas. </li></ul><ul><li>Developed a heart condition and finally emigrated to England. </li></ul><ul><li>Married Katherine Hudson and had three sons named John, Oliver, and Richard. </li></ul>

Previous Experience <ul><li>The Muscovy Company, which did trading with Asia, hired Henry Hudson to find the Northwest water passage from England to Asia. </li></ul><ul><li>Henry Hudson failed to do so. </li></ul><ul><li>Soon after, he was sponsored by the Dutch East India Company to do the same. </li></ul>

Exploration <ul><li>In the fall of 1609, he and his ship, the Half Moon, explored the Hudson River from New York Harbor to present day Albany, NY. </li></ul><ul><li>Did not find the North West Passage to Asia. </li></ul><ul><li>Crew was blocked by a massive iceberg, and waves hit their ship. </li></ul><ul><li>Explored Arctic Waters west across the North Atlantic and on the coast of Maine. </li></ul>

Results <ul><li>Found Hudson Bay. </li></ul><ul><li>Discovered the Hudson River, and made its region into New Amsterdam. </li></ul><ul><li>Became the captain of a ship called Discovery. </li></ul><ul><li>Hudson Bay was found in 1610. </li></ul><ul><li>Hudson River was found in 1609. </li></ul>

Conclusion <ul><li>Henry Hudson died on June 22,1611 at Hudson Bay because his crew threw him out of the ship with a few other men on a small boat with nothing to eat or drink. </li></ul><ul><li>He is remembered today for his courageous act of risking his life to complete four extremely foolhardy voyages and surviving in harsh, brutal winters at uncharted Arctic waters. </li></ul>
