Legislation Recently Enacted By Parliament In The Form
Legislation recently enacted by Parliament in the form of the Modern Slavery Act 2015 has been created with the intention of challenging the
problems of modern slavery within the UK. It is estimated that there are as many as 13,000 individuals currently being subjected to forced labour in
England and Wales. Historically, female members of our society have been objectified and despite equality law this perception of women as objects to
be used still pervades society on many levels. The vast majority of victims of modern slavery in the UK are trafficked from oversea's. Female victims
are generally trafficked for the purposes of sexual exploitation and domestic servitude. The Act seeks to protect all those who are victims including those

Be that as it may, the legislation does not indicate the appropriate sentences that should be imposed on those who are convicted and is, therefore
lacking somewhat in the robust deterrent that is sought by way of prevention.
The offences that the Act has created are those of slavery, servitude and force labour where person knows or ought to know that they are holding a
person under those conditions. Where there is human trafficking involved an offence is committed if a person facilitates the travel of another person
with a view to exploiting them and it is not relevant whether the person consents to that travel. In 2009, the National Referral Mechanism (NRM) was
introduced in the UK for the purpose of identifying victims of trafficking, slavery, servitude and forced labour and ensuring that they received the
appropriate support. The NRM was introduced to meet the UK's duties and responsibilities under the which are required under the Council of European
Convention on Action Against trafficking in Human Beings. The implementation of the Modern Slavey Act 2015 extended the NRM's services to all
victims of modern slavey and human trafficking in England and Wales.
Crown Prosecution Services estimate that those who are being trafficked for the purpose of forced labour and domestic services now exceeds those
who are trafficked for the purpose of sexual

Human Trafficking: Modern Day Slavery
According the World of Work magazine, "The International Labour Organization estimates that there are 20.9 million victims of human trafficking
globally." Before the civil war and the thirteenth amendment, slavery was extremely intense for people of color; you could be thrown in jail simply
because you had a skin pigments. Throughout the years of the abolishment of slavery, human trafficking has occurred. Human trafficking should be
abolished and taken action to. According to the United States Office on Drugs and Crime, "If any person–whatever the gender, whatever the age– is
brought somewhere against his or her will, or without full information... it is already human trafficking." The articles "Slavery in the Fields" and

In today's society there are different forms of trafficking. Men, women, young, old, white, black, brown, blue eyed, or green eyed humans are
trafficked everyday for different purposes. Labor trafficking is defined as using force, fraud, or coercion to recruit, harbor, transport, obtain, or employ
a person for work or services in involuntary servitude, debt bondage, or slavery. According to the article "Human Trafficking "Sex trafficking is being
involved in commercial sec acts induced by force, fraud, or coercion; in which the person performing the act is under 18. In today's society, Slavery
is the typical concept of treating someone with color as personal property. Slavery involves buying, selling, and trading individuals for labor mostly
farm work or construction." People of color have been discriminated against and have been murdered for incidence as simple as whistling at a white

Although these stories are similar, their facts are not. In the article "Slavery in the Fields", by Kevin Bales and Ron Soodalter, the authors talk about
a young man from Hidalgo, Mexico who was struggling to make a living for him and his family. Hungry for money, Antonio Martinez was promised
to be illegally imported into the United States to allegedly start a construction job in California. This article was published in the book Rereading

Essay about Indentured Servant and the Company Town
A labourer under contract to work for an employer for a specific amount of time is a bonded labourer also known as a Indentured Servant. Typically
the employer provided little or no monetary pay, but was responsible for accommodation, food, other essentials, training and when applicable
passage to a new country. Upon completion of the term of the contract the labourer sometimes received a lump sum payment such as a parcel of
land and was free to farm or take up trade of his own. In other words indentured servants are very poor people obligated to forced labor for a fixed
number of years, often in exchange for passage to the New World or other benefits. The term comes from the medieval English "indenture of retainer" a
contract written in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
After indentures were forbidden, the passage had to be prepaid, giving rise to the inhumane conditions of Irish "coffin ships" in the second half of the
19th century. Indentured Servitude was used by the Hudson's Bay Company to staff the coal mines around Nanaimo well into the late 1800's.
The Company Town
The company town was an economic institution that was part of the market for labor. In a company town a single firm provided its employees with
goods and services, hired police, collected garbage, dispensed justice, and answered (or failed to answer) complaints from residents. The economy of
the company town was totally "privatized" community services that today are provided by municipal governments were provided by the
profit–maximizing firm, which ran the company town. Property rights were defined in such a way that companies could exclude competition by other
firms that wished to provide goods and services to their employees.
Although company towns were most closely associated with the coal mining industry it should be noted that they existed in a number of other
industries. For example, Homestead, Pennsylvania was a company town situated next to the Homestead Steel Mill. Similarly, Pullman, Illinois was a
company town for workers employed at the factory that produced Pullman railroad cars. Because of large and persistent labor struggles associated with
the coal industry the focus of interest, both historical and scholarly, has been on coal company

Slavery And Human Trafficking
"The twentieth century has been a century of progress in almost every area of human rights. This makes the persistence of slavery in today's world
even more egregious. Even as laws banning slavery and its prohibition are enshrined in international instruments, notably the Universal Declaration of
Human Rights, it is still practiced in many forms: traditional chattel slavery, bonded labour, serfdom, child labour, migrant labour, domestic labour,
forced labour and slavery for ritual or religious purposes" (Aronowitz, 3). The enslaving of humans has a history that date back to the Roman
Empire and ancient Greece. In the 15th century the Europeans traded African Slaves. African slaves were the first slaves bought to the United
States, even leading other Africans to sell their own race. Slavery has taken on various forms of the span of 6,000 years. Slavery is now referred
to as "human trafficking" or "modern day slavery". Forced labor is defined as "all work or service which is extracted from any person under the
menace of any penalty and for which the said person has not offered himself voluntarily" (Aronowitz, 11). Not all persons in forced labor are
trafficked and not all trafficked persons are enslaved. Humans are taken from their homes and stripped of their morals.
Human trafficking begins with trust. When one sees some type of value in you to become a potential worker they will spare no expense in trying to
earn your trust. They will promise you anything as far as a

Human Trafficking: A Voluntary
Intro: Human trafficking is one of the most prevalent and shameful crimes that occurs globally and it affects the lives of millions of people around
the world today. It is also a common form of modern day slavery that is a clear violation of an individual's rights as a human being. Because human
trafficking is an issue that occurs globally, there are no particular demographical characteristics or features that this may affect. Despite the fact that
most people are aware of this significant issue, human trafficking remains to be one of the most unseen and neglected issues in our society. There are
many definitions of human trafficking depending on what that individual or group constitutes as trafficking and their understanding of human trafficking

In addition to that, one of the most important side effects is that working children may experience physical harm in a number of ways. These include
an increased risk of accidents; children and young people often work in unregulated environments where little attention is paid to safety. Working
children often experience violence in the workplace from adult staff and managers. Children and young people working in the street are also at risk
of physical violence from police officers and other authority figures. Risk of illness from poor hygiene and exposure to bad weather can also be
witnessed. Therefore, child labor involves the following characteristics: it violates a nation's minimum age laws, involves intolerable abuse, such as
child slavery, child trafficking, debt bondage, forced labor, or illicit activities, prevents children from going to school, and uses children to undermine
labor standards (December, 2007). Child labor can also be developmentally, emotionally, and physically abusive. Child workers are more vulnerable
than adult workers, leaving them at risk for exploitation, dangerous and abusive conditions. In many parts of the world, it too often involves
confinement, bondage, and forced labor; it frequently involves dangerous and unhealthy working conditions. Children work longer hours have lower
pays than adults. Some children are sold into labor

Slavery By Another Name Analysis
"After the Civil War black southerners were no longer slaves, but they were not yet free (Slavery by Another Name)." Many southern blacks rushed to
celebrate their new found freedom through marriage and coming together as families. However the joys of emancipation did last, for many white
southerners were turned bitter to the core for the destruction of their economy. And many felt the newly released slaves to be competitors in obtaining
land and wealth. The documentary "Slavery By Another Name" tells the narrative of a just a few African American men who lived through the era
between emancipation and the signing of Circular 3591 by Franklin D. Roosevelt which gave authorities across the country the power to finally
crackdown on involuntary servitude on December 12, 1942. It also reflects on one of the darkest times in american history and shows how the
expansion of America was paved by the suffering of an entire race.
The mood of the story is somber throughout most of the documentary due to one's reflection on the past evils of America. ... Show more content on

In the beginning of the documentary where the focus is on the new freedom of the slaves, "O Freedom" by Golden Gospel is played to mirror the
sheer joy that must have been felt by former slaves as they finally achieved the right to be their own person, free of being nothing more than a
possession. Then later in the documentary, when the audience learns of the mechanism used to keep African Americans in a vicious cycle of labor,
"Rocks and Gravel" by Henry Belafonte is played against the imagery of harsh physical labour and men drudging around in shackles. Including a
chain gang work song was a good fit for this scene in the movie. What I liked least about the film is how it only focused on a few narratives. I would

Solon and Aristocracy
In this paper, I intend to explore the conflicts that arose between those of the aristocratic society, and those who composed the vast number of peasants
before, as well as after the life and times of Solon, and the effect and solutions that Solon's rule had concerning these conflicts. Such major conflicts
between peasants and aristocrats include, [but are not limited to] land and slavery (Trumbach). Though, these laws will be explored further later on in
this essay. The ruler, Solon imposed a number of laws in order to rectify the problems that were arising between aristocrats and peasants, as well as to
mold Athenian society in a much more citizen–oriented way of living (Trumbach). Such laws included relieving the prior debts that ... Show more

The first section of this piece will attempt to explore the conflicts that occurred between the aristocrats and the peasants in Solon's Athens on the basis
of land and slavery, and the solutions that Solon posed in the form of laws, as well as the effects that they had on the citizens of the time. There
were city of Athens was divided into three parts; there was the Hill, the Plain, and the Shore (Plutarch: Solon, 54). Each division contained it's own
people with different political views. The Hill supported an extreme democracy, whereas the Plain supported an extreme oligarchy, and the Shore
wanted a government that wasn't quite an oligarchy, and wasn't quite a democracy. The Shore wanted a government that was modeled after, and was
a mix of both democracy and oligarchy (Plutarch: Solon 54). The presence of this third party made it very difficult for either extreme party to rise
above the other (Plutarch: Solon 54). The land quality of the peasants was very poor and it was located in the barren part of the city, however the rich
owned vast amounts of good quality land (Trumbach). It was very common to find peasants in debt to the aristocrats because of their bad quality land.
Many times, commoners would cultivate on the land owned by the aristocrats, and pay them one–sixth of the produce that was harvested (Plutarch:
Solon, 54). It was also apparent that peasants would use themselves as collateral, and were often seized as debt slaves by their

Forced Labor And Human Trafficking
Forced labor and human trafficking are some of the forms of slavery in the modern day. Although the world has made several strides in ending
human trafficking, several factors have played a big role in ensuring that trafficking is still carried on. The ILO describes forced labor as the work and
services offered by a person unwillingly; on the other hand human trafficking is the transport and recruitment of people through coercion with the aim
of exploiting them. The continual practice of human trafficking is attributed to certain factors such as poverty and greed. According to ILO, the profits
generated from forced labor amount to 150 billion dollars. These profits are made from the private sector especially from illegal businesses such as
sexual exploitation, domestic work and other economic exploitations (Johnson 4). Poverty is also another factor that has caused the human trafficking
business thrive, human trafficking often originate from developing countries such as those in Asia, Africa, Latin America. Their destination, on the
other hand, is always to the developed countries in Europe, America, and parts of western Africa.
Although human trafficking and forced labor are some of the global challenges, poverty has played a big role in increasing the vice. The desire by
the victims to move to areas where they can improve the living standards of their families has played a big role in increased rates of human trafficking.
Most traffickers target these victims by promising

Modern Day Slavery And Today 's Society Essay
Many times it is said that history repeats itself, but should it in cases such as slavery. Slavery has been known as a cruel war again human nature
itself, violating many basic and cherished human rights of life and liberty, (Leary, 2015). This research paper will examine modern day slavery and
the many different aspects that play a role in carrying it out in today's society. As modern dayslavery is defined, reasons for the cause will be noted,
along with the affects, abuse of power and rights, and possible solutions.
With many definitions of slavery out there, predominantly it can be referred to as a practice with different elements such as: ownership of a person as
chattel, loss of free will and control over many aspects of self but especially their labor power, and control being asserted through violence,
degradation, or threat. With slavery defined, the correlation between slavery and human trafficking of forced labor can easily be linked and observed.
There is a connection of ownership of a person as chattel where the victim loses their rule of specifically their labor power through violence,
degradation, and threats such as deportation, (Leary, 2015). Looking at modern slavery through this perspective, there is recognition that societies,
economics, and social structures do alter over time. Slavery may remind many of some of the most sorrowful and agonizing times in the nation's
history. However, there is no denying it no matter how much some try. The term "slavery"

Slavery By Another Name Thesis
Ratified by the states in the winter of 1865, the Thirteenth Amendment was put into play. It declared, "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude...shall
exist within the United States or any place subject to their jurisdiction." (Primary Documents). Officially, this amendment outlawed the practice of
slavery, there was, however, an exception. That exception was the use of involuntary servitude, or slavery, as a form of punishment. More than four
million African Americans walked free in 1865, this had a rather negative impact on the Southern economy. And so came the Convict
–lease system.
Many white Southerners saw this system as a solution to their economic hardships; nonetheless, it was often seen as being worse than slavery. In
addition to the convict lease system was the practice of Sharecropping and Peonage. These forms of subjugation brought even greater distress to the
newly freed African Americans. Despite the ratifying of the Thirteenth Amendment the abhorrent treatment of this newly freed race did not change
significantly thanks to programs like the Convict Lease system, Peonage, and Sharecropping.
The novel "Slavery by Another Name" by Douglas A. Blackmon tells of the hardships the newly freed slaves faced, as well as following the life of a
young African American man by the name of Green Cottenham. Born in the 1880s to two former slaves, was then arrested for "vagrancy" in 1908,

The Trafficking Of Human Trafficking
Humanity has known since the dawn of history, multiple forms of slavery and it varies from society to another. As long as people thought that slavery
ended, never to return, they go back and sneak into our communities in severe forms by human trafficking crimes.
When humanity eliminated the phenomenon of human slavery, it returned in different pictures and forms, combining them enslaving people, through
the recruitment, transportation, transfer of people by force and threat, and using and exploiting them in different ways.
Among the victims of human trafficking crimes, there are those who are subjected to sexual exploitation, labor exploitation, and removal of organs.
These crimes also include the recruitment of children, forced and early marriage, and forced marriage. Trafficking in persons is a national, global and
international phenomenon, at the same time, where they are moving across the border between the states by organized crime gangs.
Human trafficking ranks in third place, after drugs and arms trade, in terms of the amounts of money involved. It is a form of slavery, a violation of
human rights, and constitutes a crime against the individual and the state together, and the crime that affects human security and is the security of the
state alike. It also represents a threat to the sovereignty and security of nations, and a serious violation of the global economy.

How to Stop Trafficking
Women are not the only ones being sold today. Man are not the only ones selling humans today. All different kinds of humans are being sold in
something called human trafficking. Human trafficking has become a problem worldwide and is effecting all people male, female, children, LGBT.
There are many solutions, one of them is to educate the children at a younger age.
Human trafficking is like a modern day slavery. The people being sold are forced in to many different things. The U.S. Department of State's
Trafficking in Persons have found eight different types of trafficking which are: forced labor, sex trafficking, bonded labor, debt bondage among
migrant laborers, involuntary domestic servitude, forced child labor, child soldiers, child sex trafficking. (Hill,Wuske) This shows the different kinds
of people being effected in human trafficking. Trafficking is happening everywhere in the world. The top 4 states in the US being effected are
California, Texas, Florida and New York. Between 2010 and 2012, California's task forces initiated 2,552 investigations into human trafficking,
identified 1,277 victims, and arrested 1,798 individuals. 957 suspected victims and 1,057 suspected human trafficking incidents have been reported by
Texas–based reporting agencies to federal databases since 2007. New York was the first state to pass a safe harbor law in 2008, this help make sure

Human Trafficking And The Media
Human trafficking has become an emerging worldwide public health crisis that has been understudied and under published by both society and the
media. Human trafficking has affected men, woman, and children in varying ways. Human trafficking is not solely sex trafficking it is segmented into
various categories. Trafficking includes but is not limited to sexual exploitation, forced labor, debt bondage, involuntary servitude, and trafficking of
cells and organs. The way the media frames human trafficking has a rippling effect towards the audience and societies perspective. Positively using the
media can influence society and can possibly help fight against human trafficking. The Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), along with the
Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), and the 14th Amendment have all stated their views against
human trafficking. The United States Department of State (2015) states, "trafficking in persons," "human trafficking," and "modern slavery" have been
used as umbrella terms for the act of recruiting, harboring, transporting, providing, or obtaining a person for compelled labor or commercial sex acts
through the use of force, fraud, or coercion" (p. 7). Human trafficking is mostly thought of as sex trafficking of woman and children but this is not the
only way traffickers use woman and children. Women, children, and men are all subject to different types of servitude. The most widely recognized one

is once again a sickening reality. At this moment, men, women and children are being trafficked and exploited all over the world. The Thirteenth
Amendment did not abolish slavery completely, in fact, human trafficking is now the modern day slavery and is a problem in countries all over the
world. Sex trafficking, illegal child labor, and illegal immigrant trafficking are all examples of human trafficking. A global underground problem, it is
not only happening in the third world countries but civilized countries as well. Very seldom do victims of trafficking ever escape the vicious crime and

People are promised a good job with good pay with room and board provided. They fall for the trap and answer to the ad without knowing it is a
trick. When they are brought to the place, traffickers already stole the immigrants' passports and everything they own, making it impossible for the
immigrants to go back home. Instead of the good job and pay they were promised, they end up working 12+ hour shifts, with basically no pay, and
have bad living conditions. Men have been overlooked as potential victims of trafficking. Even when signs of exploitation that would sound alarms with
women – such as confiscation of travel documents – are clear, immigration officers or assistance groups often classify men as "migrant workers" and
send them on their way. In addition, men often don't want to admit that they were trafficked because this signifies weakness or "failure."
Trafficking is a global problem and will probably always be a problem. It has been around for centuries and one can only tell when it will ever stop.
Though there may never be an end to human trafficking, knowledge is the ultimate power and people working together to fight human trafficking, lives
can be saved.
Research has shown that investing in the education and financial power of girls and women generates multiple social benefits. Better educated women

Why Is Modern Day Slavery Today
In 1865, the 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution ended the institution of slavery. Eventhough it was abolished, modern day slavery still
exists and has evolved under a different appearance and is known as "Human Trafficking" in today's society. It still harms people all around the world.
Slavery has been continueing for centruies and forces humans to work under bad conditions. Each year, thousands of people are trafficked across
borders or internally, and exploited for cheap labor or sexual services. People are forced to work in factories, domestic work, agriculture. Children
are taken away from their school life, education and used for child soldiers, child marriage and child domestic slavery. Even as a child, they are
forced to work or any kind of thing that come to our mind. There are 10 millions children appointed, and more that we have not reached yet. Women
are forced into prostitution, marriage, to work under hard conditions. There are estimated 40.3 million people in modern slavery all around the world. It

The resident workers' fear and hatred of blacks and Italians and vice versa distracts them from their hatred of the company, and prevents them from
bonding together as workers against the Company. The Company uses racism to their advantage by promoting it, and further prevents unionization of
the workers by showing the union as something new, foreign, and untrustworthy. Unions are forbidden in the workers' contracts, so the workers must
meet secretly to discuss the possibility of one. Because they lack security in their jobs, the workers fear for their lives and creature "comforts." The
company promotes this fear by monopolizing housing, forcing workers to live in substandard housing and making sure that the workers know that if
they should lose this housing, they have nowhere else to go, no place else to live. The company completely controls their physical lives, an indication
of slavery. Keeping the workers in ignorance of their futures forces them to live in constant fear, allowing the company to easily gain and maintain

Politically, the Company controls its workers using fear to enforce its policies. Employing two "feudal knights," or detectives, from the Baldwin/Phelps

Human Trafficking Supply Chain Risk
ntro: Human Trafficking Supply Chain Risk When the media talks about human trafficking, the first thing that comes to mind is the kidnapping and
sale of women and children. Of girls lured from their homes. But human trafficking is more than just sex trafficking. Many victims of trafficking are
conscripted into modern–day slavery through force, fraud, or coercion. This takes the form of debt bondage, forced labor, and involuntary child labor.
Human Trafficking is also a supply chain issue. Human trafficking in the supply chain may take many forms. For example; a consumer might stay
at a hotel where the sheets were made from cotton harvested by migrant farmers who work with no water and no rest. Consume a chocolate they
found on their pillow, made from cocoa beans picked using child labor. Order shrimp for dinner which was fished using forced labor and where the
dishwashers and servers have had their passports confiscated. Take a call on their cell phone, which uses materials that were mined by children and
assembled by bonded labor. This is more than an ethical issue; it is a business issue. President Obama noted that human trafficking slavery "ought to
concern every business because it distorts markets." Consumers and investors have an increased awareness of supply chain risk, and an increased
aversion to companies perceived of exploiting slave labor. To address these moral and economic issues the United States and other governments are
actively passing legislation

Human Trafficking and Slavery: Are the World's Nations Doing Enough s to Stamp It Out?
Slavery has existed since the beginning of human evolution (CQ Researcher 2010). The Civil War ended slavery in the United States in 1865.
Worldwide slavery was prohibited during the late 1920's. Although slavery is prohibited, millions of victims are forced into captivity. Victims are often
kidnapped and forced into a lifetime of servitude and prostitution. Other victims of slavery are lured by the promise of a better life.
These victims are forced into cruel labor and prostitution (CQ Researcher 2010). Many of the victims are young children and women. According to

on a daily basis. They are forced to work hazardous jobs at young ages and endure debilitating abuse. Slavery has been evident since the beginning of
time. Millions of children and woman worldwide are taken hostage. They're forced to endure extreme work conditions and prostitution. Slavery is even

cycle persists in developing countries that hinders them from advancing financially and allows slavery to flourish. In order for the lucrative slave trade
to end, developing countries need to educate their children. The United States is a powerful tool in ensuring that children worldwide are gaining an
education. A question that may be relevant in the discussion of ending slavery

Human Trafficking And Slavery
Human trafficking and slavery has been in existence across the globe for thousands of years. Many forms of human trafficking and slavery is taking
place in our world today. It is horrible and no one should have to experience what those victims have gone through. Human Trafficking and slavery
should be stopped and laws should be enforced.
Slavery was banned worldwide more than a century ago. Unfortunately, thousands of people are still victims each year. It is estimated that there is
approximately 40.3 million people subjected to slavery in the world currently. This includes 10 million children, 24.9 million people forced to labor,
15.4 million forced to marriage lastly 4.8 million people forced in sexual exploation ("AntiSlavery" ILO 2017). "Slavery implies ownership" states
Susa Thatun a child protection specialist at UNICEF (Human Trafficking and Slavery. Robert Kinur. 2012). That statement is correct. Slavery comes
in all forms. For instance, a person can be forced to work, through coercion or mental and physical threat. Someone may be dehumanized and treated
as a commodity or may be sold as "property" and some may have restrictions placed on their freedom.
The most common form of Slavery is Debt Bondage. Debt Bondage is a form of slavery that holds its victims in an endless cycle of debt and poverty.
Extreme poverty often forces parents to offer themselves or their own children as collateral against a loan. Though, they are promised they will only
work until their

The Pros And Cons Of Human Trafficking
With obeying authority normally comes a positive connotation, but when it relates to doing something against one's will, then it can become negative.
Human trafficking includes forms of slavery that are still happening today, even in the United States. Many people think that slavery has been abolished
in the United States, but there is so much slavery that goes on now, even though it is not the slavery that is taught about in US History. Victims of
human trafficking obey their captors and traffickers to avoid harsh punishments that occur if they refuse to comply, and sometimes even when they do
obey. Victims who are sold into slavery, whether it be sex
–trafficking or labor–trafficking, face extreme hardships and often do not escape. They are
held captive against their will, but many stay, even when they are presented with a chance to escape. Traffickers, whose main motive is money, use
tactics to prevent their captives from escaping– many being psychological. Victims will do what they are told out of fear of punishment due to threats
their captors have given them. Driven mainly by fear of their captors, victims of human trafficking very rarely run away from them; they are
psychologically and sometimes physically bound to their captors, and that causes victims to stay in captivity, even when presented with an
opportunity to escape. Human trafficking is unethical no matter how it is looked at. No human should be held against their will and forced to
perform illegal acts or provide illegal labor. However, traffickers often ignore the ethical matters at hand and are driven by the "high profits and low
risk" of human trafficking ("The Traffickers"). Traffickers are in the business for the money and know that they will most likely not be caught. This
combination is what fuels most traffickers to enslave innocent women, children, and sometimes men and boys. Traffickers "lure and ensnare people
into forced labor and sex trafficking by manipulating and exploiting their vulnerabilities" ("The Traffickers"). The ease that traffickers do this with
shows the way they have dehumanized the victims in their mind. They no longer see the people they have captured as people, but as a means to make
money. Similarly, guards of

Human Trafficking is Trading People without their Consent
"Human Trafficking" – This term is used for trading in humans, without the victim's consent. It can be done through recruitment, harboring and
transporting. This is achieved by threat/use of violence, abduction, deception – simply for the purpose of sexual exploitation, forced labor or slavery. I
believe that slavery must be abolished because it robs people of their dignity and human rights, it's not advantageous for them and it is an
abomination to mankind. The very first form of slavery occurred 400 years ago, where the black africans were abducted from their motherland and
shipped to do hard labour in American plantations. Many of us are lead under the deception that slavery in all its forms ceases to exist and that it
is a thing of the past. Have you ever really pondered on the subject of slavery and it's existence? Well what if I happened to inform you that there
are 29 million people now, being forced to do physically damaging manual labor for no pay whatsoever, but because it is a bonded contract with
their "master" they can't ever quit, the only way they can end their suffering is through death. Their lives are made to be externally and internally
damaging, they have no say in the conditions they work in or they will face severe consequences. This form of slavery takes place in places such as
Asia and Africa, despite the shocking fact that no matter the circumstances it is undoubtedly illegal all over the globe and yet it occurs everywhere,
everyday, every second

Biljana Meshkovska, one of the authors of the article Female Sex Trafficking: Conceptual Issues, Current Debates, and Future Directions, reports,
"According to this United Nations protocol, human trafficking is the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring or receipt of persons, by means
of threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of
the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation"
(381). She records that 600,000 to about 800,000 females, males, and minors can become victims yearly (384).
Sheldon Zhang, author of the book Smuggling and Trafficking in Human Beings: All Roads Lead to America, states, "North America led the world in
absorbing large numbers of immigrants, at a rate of 1.4 million annually, followed by Europe with an annual net gain of 0.8 million. At the country
level, the United States has the largest number of immigrants, with 35 million, followed by the Russian Federation with 13 million and Germany with
7 million" (3). Human Trafficking is growing around the world, and the most common three types are sex trafficking, forced labor, and debt bondage.

Human trafficking entails the trade of human beings with an aim to exploit them for sexual slavery, forced labor as well as commercial sex services.
In some worst case scenario human trafficking results in the death of the victims who at times undergo extraction of tissues and organs. In short
human trafficking can be described as a modern day slavery. Human trafficking can be carried out within the confine of a country or state and can as
well be carried out trans–nationally. Human trafficking is best described as the illegal trade of people without necessitating actual movement of people
from one place to another. Thus trafficking can be distinguished from smuggling by the fact that smuggling involves travel while trafficking persons
are held against their consent and will and forced to work or offer services to the trafficker or other people. Consequently smuggling is a crime against
the state while human trafficking is classified as a crime against humanity.
According to Californian Legislature they define human trafficking as "all acts involved in the recruitment, abduction, transport, harboring, transfer,
sale or receipt of person, within or across national or across international borders, through force, coercion, fraud or deception, to place persons in
situations of slavery or slavery like conditions, forced labor or services, such as forced

Modern Slavery: The Different Forms Of Human Trafficking
Every year, thousands of women, men, and children get caught up in human trafficking. Human trafficking is when different kinds of labor are forced
upon typically work labor or sexual exploitation. People can get trafficked in their own country and abroad. Human trafficking consists of three core
elements, which are the action, the means, and the purpose. The action means the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring or receipt of persons.
The means includes threat of or use of force, deception, coercion, abuse of power or position of vulnerability. Lastly, the purpose is always
exploitation. The exploitation can include, but is not limited to, sexual exploitation, forced labor or services, slavery or practices similar to slavery,
servitude or the removal of organs.
Human trafficking affects every single country in the world, even right before your eyes. Stories about human trafficking are often set in far–away

contractors, employers, and many others. They are violent and sadistic, using threats, lies, bondage debt, or other forms of coercion to force people

into difficult labor. The victims of this ferocious trafficking find that the jobs are much more difficult, and they are forced to work with little to no pay.

Pros And Cons Of Human Trafficking
Human trafficking has become one and the same with prostitution and sex work. However human trafficking engulfs other types such as labor
trafficking which involves the obtaining, harboring, recruitment, and transportation of people for labor or services. These are the two types most
thought of but there are eight classifications of human trafficking, and they include: forced labor, sex trafficking, bonded labor, debt bondage among
migrants, involuntary domestic servitude, forced child soldiers, and child sex trafficking (Dalton, 2013). These types of human trafficking are modern
day slavery and they are not an isolated problem, it occurs all over the world and generates billions of dollars in revenue. Over the past decade the
internet has given growth and expansion to this issue of human trafficking through websites such as Backpage and Craigslist. These are just a few of
the sites used in the solicitation of humans.
The issue has become whether we can hold these third–parties criminally liable in these cases. The Communication Decency Act attempts to regulate
indecent and obscene material on the internet but Section 230 of this Act states that operators of internet service cannot be held liable for the words
third–parties the utilize their services. This has only been denied when the website actually had a part in the design and publication of the
advertisements used in human trafficking. Organizations have banned with websites in support of this fight. They

According to the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime, Bangladesh is a source, transit, and destination for human trafficking involving women,
men, and children (1). Bangladeshi men and women are lured into work under false pretenses within their own country or into neighboring countries
(2). A large proportion of cross– border trafficking in Bangladesh is due to migration in search of employment. Most are subjected to forced labor or
forced prostitution (3).
Thousands of unreported children are trafficked from Bangladesh to other countries every year (2). Children who are taken by traffickers often come
from impoverished or isolated regions. The parents are promised that their children will have a well–paid job or a nice marriage (4). Impoverished and
desperate, they trust the offers, which ultimately lead their children to be exploited through trafficking (7).
3)If this is a destination country and/or if there is internal human trafficking, which forms of trafficking are common in this country? (If you think that
there are no forms of trafficking happening within this country, provide citations about that and some reasons why it is not happening. The reasons don

Within the country, trafficked people are subjected to sex trafficking, domestic servitude, or forced and bonded labor (7).

Slavery: The Role Of Human Trafficking In Russia
The conflict surrounding the issue of human trafficking has always existed. However, human trafficking has never been taken as serious as it should
have been. Human trafficking is a form of a contemporary slavery that is occurring all over the world. Many cultures do not recognize this problem as
being. One of the major problems of human trafficking is trafficking migrants. The migrants are tricked and work on very low wages or in a forced
labor. In forced labor, the workers do not get paid as much as they were promised or do not get paid at all. This type ofslavery does not only include
forced labor but also commercial sexual exploitation. And many organizations are trying to eradicate human trafficking.

Regardless of this criticism, Russia has not proposed anything to eradicate it, yet. Some citizens and other politics have many opinions that could
decrease and eliminate human trafficking in Russia. They believe that the number of human trafficking will decrease if the government strengthen
political cooperation, maintain the strict obedience to international standards or laws and stop mistreating the trafficked people as illegal migrants. And
the government hopes to accomplish these. Also enforcing the laws more strictly and giving the traffickers clear and appropriate punishments will also
support in decreasing the number of human trafficking. Consequently, if these mentioned "laws" apply in reality, Russia's human trafficking rate will
decline.
The delegate of Russia completely perceives the situation of human trafficking in Russia. Russia understands what the committee hopes and looks
forward to doing about this situation. The government has not implied the recommendations made by the citizens about human trafficking however;
Russia supports the idea of eliminating human trafficking. Additionally, Russia firmly believes that UNHRC can solve this problem and end

decrease the amount of men, women, and children being taken. There are human trafficking hotlines in Asia to report and stop human trafficking.
Again, these are not widely known and therefore can not always do their jobs. One of these places or 'hotlines' is the ZOE. According to "Human
Trafficking Hotline" on gozoe.org (n.d.) "ZOE receives over 200 calls a year on its human trafficking hotline. ZOE's Child Rescue (ZCR)
department members are Thai citizens who speak a variety of languages (Thai, Karen, Burmese, etc.)" (para. 2). Even though they do collect on
average 200 calls a year, that is only a speck to the thousands of people actually taken in Asia every year. By spreading awareness in ways such as
annual conventions and advertising, people will become more aware of the existing problem. By giving the people of Asia the knowledge and the
ability to prevent such an attack, the course of human trafficking will presumably

Slavery And Modern Slavery
Modern slavery.
While I was searching documents about one social issue as a topic for an essay, I found the report. "Forced labor, modern slavery, and human
trafficking."[1] Horrified and shocked I searched more information on the subject. I thought that I would find this problem narrowed to war zones or
remote places where the word civility and humanity were only a desire. Unfortunately, I have seen in those reports that although our country struggles
to eliminate it, this problem persists here. Even worst, some big companies have circumvented the laws, buying or having been associated with
companies who use slavery for their workforce. I refuse to accept it. The existence of this scourge in this century is humiliating and unbearable. It is
important that we fight against it. Modern slavery encompasses and promotes almost all the forms of discrimination and crimes.
As per the U.S Department of State, "Trafficking in persons," "human trafficking," and "modern slavery" are used as umbrella terms to refer to both
sex trafficking and compelled labor. Those who turn a blind eye and justify the poor conditions afflicting Chinese workers because the clothes are
cheaper, those who justify the miserable salaries paid to immigrants sometimes under menaces of denunciation, like the domestic work employees
because they are alien workers, those that vindicate the jail with forced labor because those that are in the jails are criminals, are buying his own chain.

Human Trafficking : History, Current Trends, And Prevention
Abstract
This paper reviews the ongoing crime of present day slavery, now known as human trafficking. With over an estimated 700,000 of human trafficking
victims within the United States, this report focuses on the 7 main types of human trafficking, including labor and sex trafficking, common victims,
and the history surrounding the prevention of this crime. As with many types of crimes against humanity, this is a behind doors crime; the perpetrators
prey on the "unwanted" or the already missing of society, take advantage of the naГЇve, those looking for the opportunity for a better future, and then
the actual coercion and force to perform unwanted sexual acts or labor occurs within the privacy of criminals' home or business. Greater awareness of
such crimes may be the biggest tool in their prevention.

Many communities, particularly rural areas do not possess adequate school facilities. Even when schools are sometimes available, they are too far
away, difficult to reach, unaffordable or the quality of education is so poor that parents wonder if going to school is really worth it. In government–run
primary schools, even when children show up, government–paid teachers do not show up 25% of the time. The 2008 ILO study suggests that illiteracy
resulting from a child going to work, rather than a quality primary and secondary school, limits the child's ability to get a basic educational
grounding which would in normal situations enable them to acquire skills and to improve their prospects for a decent adult working life. An older
report published by UNICEF outlines the issues summarized by the ILO report. The UNICEF report claimed that while 90% of child labour in
India is in its rural areas, the availability and quality of schools is decrepit; in rural areas of India, claims the old UNICEF report, about 50% of

Summary Of Human Trafficking In Little Princess
In Little Princess, Conor Grennan goes on a journey to Nepal for a year. His mission was at first just to have something on his resume and to help
him figure out his life. He was going to Nepal to volunteer at an orphanage. Nepal was in a critical time, a brutal Civil War. On entering the
orphanage his perceptive of volunteering was nothing too deep. He begins to bond with the orphans and understand their stories. Many of the children
had been taken away from their families and tricked into thinking they were going to a better place. When he departs from Nepal, he realizes how
much he misses the kids and wants to go back. In Part II, he returns to the orphanage but leaves for two months to go volunteer around the globe.
Through–out the book, he searches for the orphan's families, opens his own children's home and changes his life.

that there is "evidence of Hezbollah establishing a strong base in Latin America over the past decade or more and working with Mexican DTOs

According to Louise Shelley, author of ISIS, Boko Haram, and the Growing Role of Human Trafficking in 21st Century Terrorism, "human trafficking
now serves three main purposes for terrorist groups: generating revenue, providing fighting power, and vanquishing the enemy" (Shelley, 2014),
although it's arguable that human trafficking provides significant critical support activity for international terrorist organizations by providing
financing with little to no upfront costs, potential entry into the United States and other developed countries via various work and travel visas, used as
a recruitment technique for young soldiers, and also provides a way to demoralize the enemy by kidnapping their women and children. Before
analyzing the critical support activity for international terrorist organizations, it is important to reflect on the similarities between modern human
trafficking and the history of slavery.
Slavery spans many cultures, nationalities, and religions from times of the Sumerians and Ancient Egyptians to present day human trafficking. Slavery
was practiced in almost every civilization throughout history and only recently has been vilified globally in the last 200 years, although human

Human Trafficking Speech
"No one shall be held in slavery or servitude", these are the words from the International Human Bill of Rights that are supposed to protect us.
However, that is not exactly the case. All around the world there is illegal practices that involves a modern form of slavery, this form of slavery can
not be easily abolished, it often involves the practice of human trafficking. Human trafficking is the illegal practice of transporting a person from one
place to another, typically for a form of forced labor, it goes against the words in the International Human Bill of Rights. There is human trafficking
all around the world, but the rate is higher in impoverished places such as Bangladesh, Brazil and Haiti. Human trafficking occurs because of unstable
political climates, families economically disadvantaged, and being stuck in debt that is ever growing which one can not pay with money. Unstable
political climates are catalyst for human trafficking. The conditions of the political system are tied to the government and the security in which the
country has. In the article "Sex Trafficking of Women and Girls", it states "it is easier to recruit and transport women, bribe officials and forge
passports and other travel documents " (Deshpande, Neha A., and Nawal M. Nour). If the government is not tight or well–developed the chances of
sneaking immigrants in is much higher, this means it is easier to use them and force them into labor. Although human trafficking is one of the most

Slavery as a Positive Good
Slavery as a Positive Good Question
When referring to the days of slavery, it is often assumed that the south was the sole force behind its continuance. However there were many factors
which lead southerners as well as some in the north to quietly accept slavery as a good thing. John Calhoun declared in 1837 "Many in the South once
believed that [slavery] was a moral and political evil...That folly and delusion are gone; we see it now in its true light, and regard it as the most safe
and stable basis for free institutions in the world" (p. 345). This statement was justified by various reasons. There was the fundamental belief that
Africans were inferior to their white counterparts. Many saw the slave population as a labor force that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Take for example a woman whose role is to care for her master's children. She maybe well loved by her charges but as they grow they will come to see
her as less than a human being. That won't necessarily keep them from caring about her, they will simply do so in the way they would love a cat or
dog. Pro–slavery advocates were also quick to point out that the great empires of history were based on slave labor. The Greeks, Romans,
Egyptians, Persians and so forth were mighty civilizations that enslaved captives of war as well as criminals. It is possible to assume that since these
societies were able to focus of innovation and thinking because of their slave work force that the south too would flourish intellectually. Whether or
not this is true is debatable. Yes there were several southern inventors and writers of the time but to compare it to the advances of the past would be
difficult. In conclusion, the "positive good" argument was nothing short of a means for whites of all classes on both sides of the Mason–Dixie line to
ease their own guilt over the institution of slavery. It is human nature to put a positive spin on something we benefit from. Wars have been waged under
the precipice of uniting territories, bringing order, divine right, and alike while the true motivations have been wealth, power and glory. The south was

Legislation Recently Enacted By Parliament In The Form

  • 1. Legislation Recently Enacted By Parliament In The Form Legislation recently enacted by Parliament in the form of the Modern Slavery Act 2015 has been created with the intention of challenging the problems of modern slavery within the UK. It is estimated that there are as many as 13,000 individuals currently being subjected to forced labour in England and Wales. Historically, female members of our society have been objectified and despite equality law this perception of women as objects to be used still pervades society on many levels. The vast majority of victims of modern slavery in the UK are trafficked from oversea's. Female victims are generally trafficked for the purposes of sexual exploitation and domestic servitude. The Act seeks to protect all those who are victims including those ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Be that as it may, the legislation does not indicate the appropriate sentences that should be imposed on those who are convicted and is, therefore lacking somewhat in the robust deterrent that is sought by way of prevention. The offences that the Act has created are those of slavery, servitude and force labour where person knows or ought to know that they are holding a person under those conditions. Where there is human trafficking involved an offence is committed if a person facilitates the travel of another person with a view to exploiting them and it is not relevant whether the person consents to that travel. In 2009, the National Referral Mechanism (NRM) was introduced in the UK for the purpose of identifying victims of trafficking, slavery, servitude and forced labour and ensuring that they received the appropriate support. The NRM was introduced to meet the UK's duties and responsibilities under the which are required under the Council of European Convention on Action Against trafficking in Human Beings. The implementation of the Modern Slavey Act 2015 extended the NRM's services to all victims of modern slavey and human trafficking in England and Wales. Crown Prosecution Services estimate that those who are being trafficked for the purpose of forced labour and domestic services now exceeds those who are trafficked for the purpose of sexual ... • 2. Human Trafficking: Modern Day Slavery According the World of Work magazine, "The International Labour Organization estimates that there are 20.9 million victims of human trafficking globally." Before the civil war and the thirteenth amendment, slavery was extremely intense for people of color; you could be thrown in jail simply because you had a skin pigments. Throughout the years of the abolishment of slavery, human trafficking has occurred. Human trafficking should be abolished and taken action to. According to the United States Office on Drugs and Crime, "If any person–whatever the gender, whatever the age– is brought somewhere against his or her will, or without full information... it is already human trafficking." Men, women, young, old, white, black, brown, blue eyed, or green eyed humans are trafficked everyday for different purposes. Labor trafficking is defined as using force, fraud, or coercion to recruit, harbor, transport, obtain, or employ a person for work or services in involuntary servitude, debt bondage, or slavery. According to the article "Human Trafficking "Sex trafficking is being involved in commercial sec acts induced by force, fraud, or coercion; in which the person performing the act is under 18. In today's society, Slavery is the typical concept of treating someone with color as personal property. Slavery involves buying, selling, and trading individuals for labor mostly farm work or construction." People of color have been discriminated against and have been murdered for incidence as simple as whistling at a white women, such as Emmett Till. Although these stories are similar, their facts are not. In the article "Slavery in the Fields", by Kevin Bales and Ron Soodalter, the authors talk about a young man from Hidalgo, Mexico who was struggling to make a living for him and his family. Hungry for money, Antonio Martinez was promised to be illegally imported into the United States to allegedly start a construction job in California. • 3. Essay about Indentured Servant and the Company Town A labourer under contract to work for an employer for a specific amount of time is a bonded labourer also known as a Indentured Servant. Typically the employer provided little or no monetary pay, but was responsible for accommodation, food, other essentials, training and when applicable passage to a new country. Upon completion of the term of the contract the labourer sometimes received a lump sum payment such as a parcel of land and was free to farm or take up trade of his own. In other words indentured servants are very poor people obligated to forced labor for a fixed number of years, often in exchange for passage to the New World or other benefits. After indentures were forbidden, the passage had to be prepaid, giving rise to the inhumane conditions of Irish "coffin ships" in the second half of the 19th century. Indentured Servitude was used by the Hudson's Bay Company to staff the coal mines around Nanaimo well into the late 1800's. The Company Town The company town was an economic institution that was part of the market for labor. In a company town a single firm provided its employees with goods and services, hired police, collected garbage, dispensed justice, and answered (or failed to answer) complaints from residents. The economy of the company town was totally "privatized" community services that today are provided by municipal governments were provided by the profit–maximizing firm, which ran the company town. Property rights were defined in such a way that companies could exclude competition by other firms that wished to provide goods and services to their employees. Although company towns were most closely associated with the coal mining industry it should be noted that they existed in a number of other industries. For example, Homestead, Pennsylvania was a company town situated next to the Homestead Steel Mill. Similarly, Pullman, Illinois was a company town for workers employed at the factory that produced Pullman railroad cars. Because of large and persistent labor struggles associated with the coal industry the focus of interest, both historical and scholarly, has been on coal company ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Slavery And Human Trafficking "The twentieth century has been a century of progress in almost every area of human rights. This makes the persistence of slavery in today's world even more egregious. Even as laws banning slavery and its prohibition are enshrined in international instruments, notably the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, it is still practiced in many forms: traditional chattel slavery, bonded labour, serfdom, child labour, migrant labour, domestic labour, forced labour and slavery for ritual or religious purposes" (Aronowitz, 3). The enslaving of humans has a history that date back to the Roman Empire and ancient Greece. In the 15th century the Europeans traded African Slaves. African slaves were the first slaves bought to the United States, even leading other Africans to sell their own race. Slavery has taken on various forms of the span of 6,000 years. Slavery is now referred to as "human trafficking" or "modern day slavery". Forced labor is defined as "all work or service which is extracted from any person under the menace of any penalty and for which the said person has not offered himself voluntarily" (Aronowitz, 11). Not all persons in forced labor are trafficked and not all trafficked persons are enslaved. Humans are taken from their homes and stripped of their morals. Human trafficking begins with trust. When one sees some type of value in you to become a potential worker they will spare no expense in trying to earn your trust. They will promise you anything as far as a ... It is also a common form of modern day slavery that is a clear violation of an individual's rights as a human being. Because human trafficking is an issue that occurs globally, there are no particular demographical characteristics or features that this may affect. In addition to that, one of the most important side effects is that working children may experience physical harm in a number of ways. These include an increased risk of accidents; children and young people often work in unregulated environments where little attention is paid to safety. Working children often experience violence in the workplace from adult staff and managers. Children and young people working in the street are also at risk of physical violence from police officers and other authority figures. Risk of illness from poor hygiene and exposure to bad weather can also be witnessed. Therefore, child labor involves the following characteristics: it violates a nation's minimum age laws, involves intolerable abuse, such as child slavery, child trafficking, debt bondage, forced labor, or illicit activities, prevents children from going to school, and uses children to undermine labor standards (December, 2007). Child labor can also be developmentally, emotionally, and physically abusive. Child workers are more vulnerable than adult workers, leaving them at risk for exploitation, dangerous and abusive conditions. In many parts of the world, it too often involves confinement, bondage, and forced labor; it frequently involves dangerous and unhealthy working conditions. • 7. Slavery By Another Name Analysis "After the Civil War black southerners were no longer slaves, but they were not yet free (Slavery by Another Name)." Many southern blacks rushed to celebrate their new found freedom through marriage and coming together as families. However the joys of emancipation did last, for many white southerners were turned bitter to the core for the destruction of their economy. And many felt the newly released slaves to be competitors in obtaining land and wealth. The documentary "Slavery By Another Name" tells the narrative of a just a few African American men who lived through the era between emancipation and the signing of Circular 3591 by Franklin D. Roosevelt which gave authorities across the country the power to finally crackdown on involuntary servitude on December 12, 1942. It also reflects on one of the darkest times in american history and shows how the expansion of America was paved by the suffering of an entire race. The mood of the story is somber throughout most of the documentary due to one's reflection on the past evils of America. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the beginning of the documentary where the focus is on the new freedom of the slaves, "O Freedom" by Golden Gospel is played to mirror the sheer joy that must have been felt by former slaves as they finally achieved the right to be their own person, free of being nothing more than a possession. Then later in the documentary, when the audience learns of the mechanism used to keep African Americans in a vicious cycle of labor, "Rocks and Gravel" by Henry Belafonte is played against the imagery of harsh physical labour and men drudging around in shackles. Including a chain gang work song was a good fit for this scene in the movie. What I liked least about the film is how it only focused on a few narratives. • 8. Solon and Aristocracy In this paper, I intend to explore the conflicts that arose between those of the aristocratic society, and those who composed the vast number of peasants before, as well as after the life and times of Solon, and the effect and solutions that Solon's rule had concerning these conflicts. Such major conflicts between peasants and aristocrats include, [but are not limited to] land and slavery (Trumbach). Though, these laws will be explored further later on in this essay. The ruler, Solon imposed a number of laws in order to rectify the problems that were arising between aristocrats and peasants, as well as to mold Athenian society in a much more citizen–oriented way of living (Trumbach). Such laws included relieving the prior debts that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I. The first section of this piece will attempt to explore the conflicts that occurred between the aristocrats and the peasants in Solon's Athens on the basis of land and slavery, and the solutions that Solon posed in the form of laws, as well as the effects that they had on the citizens of the time. There were city of Athens was divided into three parts; there was the Hill, the Plain, and the Shore (Plutarch: Solon, 54). Each division contained it's own people with different political views. The Hill supported an extreme democracy, whereas the Plain supported an extreme oligarchy, and the Shore wanted a government that wasn't quite an oligarchy, and wasn't quite a democracy. The Shore wanted a government that was modeled after, and was a mix of both democracy and oligarchy (Plutarch: Solon 54). The presence of this third party made it very difficult for either extreme party to rise above the other (Plutarch: Solon 54). The land quality of the peasants was very poor and it was located in the barren part of the city, however the rich owned vast amounts of good quality land (Trumbach). It was very common to find peasants in debt to the aristocrats because of their bad quality land. Many times, commoners would cultivate on the land owned by the aristocrats, and pay them one–sixth of the produce that was harvested (Plutarch: Solon, 54). • 10. Forced Labor And Human Trafficking Forced labor and human trafficking are some of the forms of slavery in the modern day. Although the world has made several strides in ending human trafficking, several factors have played a big role in ensuring that trafficking is still carried on. The ILO describes forced labor as the work and services offered by a person unwillingly; on the other hand human trafficking is the transport and recruitment of people through coercion with the aim of exploiting them. The continual practice of human trafficking is attributed to certain factors such as poverty and greed. According to ILO, the profits generated from forced labor amount to 150 billion dollars. These profits are made from the private sector especially from illegal businesses such as sexual exploitation, domestic work and other economic exploitations (Johnson 4). Poverty is also another factor that has caused the human trafficking business thrive, human trafficking often originate from developing countries such as those in Asia, Africa, Latin America. Their destination, on the other hand, is always to the developed countries in Europe, America, and parts of western Africa. Although human trafficking and forced labor are some of the global challenges, poverty has played a big role in increasing the vice. The desire by the victims to move to areas where they can improve the living standards of their families has played a big role in increased rates of human trafficking. • 11. Modern Day Slavery And Today 's Society Essay Many times it is said that history repeats itself, but should it in cases such as slavery. Slavery has been known as a cruel war again human nature itself, violating many basic and cherished human rights of life and liberty, (Leary, 2015). This research paper will examine modern day slavery and the many different aspects that play a role in carrying it out in today's society. As modern dayslavery is defined, reasons for the cause will be noted, along with the affects, abuse of power and rights, and possible solutions. With many definitions of slavery out there, predominantly it can be referred to as a practice with different elements such as: ownership of a person as chattel, loss of free will and control over many aspects of self but especially their labor power, and control being asserted through violence, degradation, or threat. With slavery defined, the correlation between slavery and human trafficking of forced labor can easily be linked and observed. There is a connection of ownership of a person as chattel where the victim loses their rule of specifically their labor power through violence, degradation, and threats such as deportation, (Leary, 2015). Looking at modern slavery through this perspective, there is recognition that societies, economics, and social structures do alter over time. Slavery may remind many of some of the most sorrowful and agonizing times in the nation's history. However, there is no denying it no matter how much some try. The term "slavery" ... • 12. Slavery By Another Name Thesis Ratified by the states in the winter of 1865, the Thirteenth Amendment was put into play. It declared, "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude...shall exist within the United States or any place subject to their jurisdiction." (Primary Documents). Officially, this amendment outlawed the practice of slavery, there was, however, an exception. That exception was the use of involuntary servitude, or slavery, as a form of punishment. More than four million African Americans walked free in 1865, this had a rather negative impact on the Southern economy. And so came the Convict –lease system. Many white Southerners saw this system as a solution to their economic hardships; nonetheless, it was often seen as being worse than slavery. In addition to the convict lease system was the practice of Sharecropping and Peonage. These forms of subjugation brought even greater distress to the newly freed African Americans. Despite the ratifying of the Thirteenth Amendment the abhorrent treatment of this newly freed race did not change significantly thanks to programs like the Convict Lease system, Peonage, and Sharecropping. The novel "Slavery by Another Name" by Douglas A. Blackmon tells of the hardships the newly freed slaves faced, as well as following the life of a young African American man by the name of Green Cottenham. As long as people thought that slavery ended, never to return, they go back and sneak into our communities in severe forms by human trafficking crimes. When humanity eliminated the phenomenon of human slavery, it returned in different pictures and forms, combining them enslaving people, through the recruitment, transportation, transfer of people by force and threat, and using and exploiting them in different ways. Among the victims of human trafficking crimes, there are those who are subjected to sexual exploitation, labor exploitation, and removal of organs. These crimes also include the recruitment of children, forced and early marriage, and forced marriage. Trafficking in persons is a national, global and international phenomenon, at the same time, where they are moving across the border between the states by organized crime gangs. Human trafficking ranks in third place, after drugs and arms trade, in terms of the amounts of money involved. It is a form of slavery, a violation of human rights, and constitutes a crime against the individual and the state together, and the crime that affects human security and is the security of the state alike. • 16. Human Trafficking And The Media Human trafficking has become an emerging worldwide public health crisis that has been understudied and under published by both society and the media. Human trafficking has affected men, woman, and children in varying ways. Human trafficking is not solely sex trafficking it is segmented into various categories. Trafficking includes but is not limited to sexual exploitation, forced labor, debt bondage, involuntary servitude, and trafficking of cells and organs. The way the media frames human trafficking has a rippling effect towards the audience and societies perspective. Positively using the media can influence society and can possibly help fight against human trafficking. The Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), along with the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), and the 14th Amendment have all stated their views against human trafficking. The United States Department of State (2015) states, "trafficking in persons," "human trafficking," and "modern slavery" have been used as umbrella terms for the act of recruiting, harboring, transporting, providing, or obtaining a person for compelled labor or commercial sex acts through the use of force, fraud, or coercion" (p. 7). • 17. The Thirteenth Amendment: Modern Day Slavery Fifty years ago, the abomination of slavery seemed like a thing of the past. But history has a way of repeating itself. Today, we find that human slavery is once again a sickening reality. At this moment, men, women and children are being trafficked and exploited all over the world. The Thirteenth Amendment did not abolish slavery completely, in fact, human trafficking is now the modern day slavery and is a problem in countries all over the world. Sex trafficking, illegal child labor, and illegal immigrant trafficking are all examples of human trafficking. Instead of the good job and pay they were promised, they end up working 12+ hour shifts, with basically no pay, and have bad living conditions. Men have been overlooked as potential victims of trafficking. Even when signs of exploitation that would sound alarms with women – such as confiscation of travel documents – are clear, immigration officers or assistance groups often classify men as "migrant workers" and send them on their way. In addition, men often don't want to admit that they were trafficked because this signifies weakness or "failure." Trafficking is a global problem and will probably always be a problem. It has been around for centuries and one can only tell when it will ever stop. Though there may never be an end to human trafficking, knowledge is the ultimate power and people working together to fight human trafficking, lives can be saved. Human Trafficking Supply Chain Risk ntro: Human Trafficking Supply Chain Risk When the media talks about human trafficking, the first thing that comes to mind is the kidnapping and sale of women and children. Of girls lured from their homes. But human trafficking is more than just sex trafficking. Many victims of trafficking are conscripted into modern–day slavery through force, fraud, or coercion. This takes the form of debt bondage, forced labor, and involuntary child labor. Human Trafficking is also a supply chain issue. Human trafficking in the supply chain may take many forms. For example; a consumer might stay at a hotel where the sheets were made from cotton harvested by migrant farmers who work with no water and no rest. Consume a chocolate they found on their pillow, made from cocoa beans picked using child labor. Order shrimp for dinner which was fished using forced labor and where the dishwashers and servers have had their passports confiscated. Take a call on their cell phone, which uses materials that were mined by children and assembled by bonded labor. This is more than an ethical issue; it is a business issue. President Obama noted that human trafficking slavery "ought to concern every business because it distorts markets." Consumers and investors have an increased awareness of supply chain risk, and an increased aversion to companies perceived of exploiting slave labor. Many forms of human trafficking and slavery is taking place in our world today. It is horrible and no one should have to experience what those victims have gone through. Human Trafficking and slavery should be stopped and laws should be enforced. Slavery was banned worldwide more than a century ago. Unfortunately, thousands of people are still victims each year. It is estimated that there is approximately 40.3 million people subjected to slavery in the world currently. This includes 10 million children, 24.9 million people forced to labor, 15.4 million forced to marriage lastly 4.8 million people forced in sexual exploation ("AntiSlavery" ILO 2017). "Slavery implies ownership" states Susa Thatun a child protection specialist at UNICEF (Human Trafficking and Slavery. Robert Kinur. 2012). That statement is correct. Slavery comes in all forms. For instance, a person can be forced to work, through coercion or mental and physical threat. Someone may be dehumanized and treated as a commodity or may be sold as "property" and some may have restrictions placed on their freedom. The most common form of Slavery is Debt Bondage. • 23. The Pros And Cons Of Human Trafficking With obeying authority normally comes a positive connotation, but when it relates to doing something against one's will, then it can become negative. Human trafficking includes forms of slavery that are still happening today, even in the United States. Many people think that slavery has been abolished in the United States, but there is so much slavery that goes on now, even though it is not the slavery that is taught about in US History. Victims of human trafficking obey their captors and traffickers to avoid harsh punishments that occur if they refuse to comply, and sometimes even when they do obey. Victims who are sold into slavery, whether it be sex –trafficking or labor–trafficking, face extreme hardships and often do not escape. They are held captive against their will, but many stay, even when they are presented with a chance to escape. Traffickers, whose main motive is money, use tactics to prevent their captives from escaping– many being psychological. Victims will do what they are told out of fear of punishment due to threats their captors have given them. Driven mainly by fear of their captors, victims of human trafficking very rarely run away from them; they are psychologically and sometimes physically bound to their captors, and that causes victims to stay in captivity, even when presented with an opportunity to escape. Human trafficking is unethical no matter how it is looked at. No human should be held against their will and forced to perform illegal acts or provide illegal labor. However, traffickers often ignore the ethical matters at hand and are driven by the "high profits and low risk" of human trafficking ("The Traffickers"). Traffickers are in the business for the money and know that they will most likely not be caught. This combination is what fuels most traffickers to enslave innocent women, children, and sometimes men and boys. Traffickers "lure and ensnare people into forced labor and sex trafficking by manipulating and exploiting their vulnerabilities" ("The Traffickers"). The ease that traffickers do this with shows the way they have dehumanized the victims in their mind. They no longer see the people they have captured as people, but as a means to make money. It can be done through recruitment, harboring and transporting. This is achieved by threat/use of violence, abduction, deception – simply for the purpose of sexual exploitation, forced labor or slavery. I believe that slavery must be abolished because it robs people of their dignity and human rights, it's not advantageous for them and it is an abomination to mankind. The very first form of slavery occurred 400 years ago, where the black africans were abducted from their motherland and shipped to do hard labour in American plantations. Many of us are lead under the deception that slavery in all its forms ceases to exist and that it is a thing of the past. Have you ever really pondered on the subject of slavery and it's existence? The 2008 ILO study suggests that illiteracy resulting from a child going to work, rather than a quality primary and secondary school, limits the child's ability to get a basic educational grounding which would in normal situations enable them to acquire skills and to improve their prospects for a decent adult working life. An older report published by UNICEF outlines the issues summarized by the ILO report. The UNICEF report claimed that while 90% of child labour in India is in its rural areas, the availability and quality of schools is decrepit; in rural areas of India, claims the old UNICEF report, about 50% of government funded primary schools that exist do not have a building, 40% lack a blackboard, few have books, and 97% of funds for these publicly funded school have been budgeted by the government as salaries for the teacher and administrators. A 2012 Wall Street Journal article reports while the enrolment in India's school has dramatically increased in recent years to over 96% of all children in the 6–14 year age group, the infrastructure in ... Human trafficking is a modern–day multibillion slavery business, involving victims who are kidnapped, smuggled and/or recruited then forced into slavery, labor and/or sexual exploitation. The primary cause of human trafficking is poverty. It is a global epidemic sweeping the nations and has been for years. It is more prevalent in third world countries, yet it is occurring all over the world. Traffickers make an income and a way of living from offering humans for slavery, labor, and sexual exploitation. • 37. Similar To Many Successful Enterprises, Terrorist Groups Similar to many successful enterprises, terrorist groups have always diversified their revenue stream by relying on various forms of criminal activities to fund their operations. Terrorist groups are being forced to converge with organized crime to integrate local criminal activities in order to fund international terrorism. According to Steven D 'Alfonso, author of Why Organized Crime and Terror Groups Are Converging, D 'Alfonso notes that there is "evidence of Hezbollah establishing a strong base in Latin America over the past decade or more and working with Mexican DTOs [drug–trafficking organizations] to launder money, finance terrorism and smuggle people" (D 'Alfonso, 2014). Other diversified revenue streams of terrorist groups... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... According to Louise Shelley, author of ISIS, Boko Haram, and the Growing Role of Human Trafficking in 21st Century Terrorism, "human trafficking now serves three main purposes for terrorist groups: generating revenue, providing fighting power, and vanquishing the enemy" (Shelley, 2014), although it's arguable that human trafficking provides significant critical support activity for international terrorist organizations by providing financing with little to no upfront costs, potential entry into the United States and other developed countries via various work and travel visas, used as a recruitment technique for young soldiers, and also provides a way to demoralize the enemy by kidnapping their women and children. Before analyzing the critical support activity for international terrorist organizations, it is important to reflect on the similarities between modern human trafficking and the history of slavery. Slavery spans many cultures, nationalities, and religions from times of the Sumerians and Ancient Egyptians to present day human trafficking. Slavery was practiced in almost every civilization throughout history and only recently has been vilified globally in the last 200 years, although human trafficking remains a critical international problem with an estimated 25–40 million people enslaved. Although slavery and human trafficking are not the same, they ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Human Trafficking Speech "No one shall be held in slavery or servitude", these are the words from the International Human Bill of Rights that are supposed to protect us. However, that is not exactly the case. All around the world there is illegal practices that involves a modern form of slavery, this form of slavery can not be easily abolished, it often involves the practice of human trafficking. Human trafficking is the illegal practice of transporting a person from one place to another, typically for a form of forced labor, it goes against the words in the International Human Bill of Rights. There is human trafficking all around the world, but the rate is higher in impoverished places such as Bangladesh, Brazil and Haiti. Human trafficking occurs because of unstable political climates, families economically disadvantaged, and being stuck in debt that is ever growing which one can not pay with money. Unstable political climates are catalyst for human trafficking. The conditions of the political system are tied to the government and the security in which the country has. In the article "Sex Trafficking of Women and Girls", it states "it is easier to recruit and transport women, bribe officials and forge passports and other travel documents " (Deshpande, Neha A., and Nawal M. Nour). If the government is not tight or well–developed the chances of sneaking immigrants in is much higher, this means it is easier to use them and force them into labor. • 39. Slavery as a Positive Good Slavery as a Positive Good Question When referring to the days of slavery, it is often assumed that the south was the sole force behind its continuance. However there were many factors which lead southerners as well as some in the north to quietly accept slavery as a good thing. John Calhoun declared in 1837 "Many in the South once believed that [slavery] was a moral and political evil...That folly and delusion are gone; we see it now in its true light, and regard it as the most safe and stable basis for free institutions in the world" (p. 345). This statement was justified by various reasons. There was the fundamental belief that Africans were inferior to their white counterparts. Many saw the slave population as a labor force that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Take for example a woman whose role is to care for her master's children. She maybe well loved by her charges but as they grow they will come to see her as less than a human being. That won't necessarily keep them from caring about her, they will simply do so in the way they would love a cat or dog. Pro–slavery advocates were also quick to point out that the great empires of history were based on slave labor. The Greeks, Romans, Egyptians, Persians and so forth were mighty civilizations that enslaved captives of war as well as criminals. It is possible to assume that since these societies were able to focus of innovation and thinking because of their slave work force that the south too would flourish intellectually. Whether or not this is true is debatable. Yes there were several southern inventors and writers of the time but to compare it to the advances of the past would be difficult. In conclusion, the "positive good" argument was nothing short of a means for whites of all classes on both sides of the Mason–Dixie line to ease their own guilt over the institution of slavery. It is human nature to put a positive spin on something we benefit from. Wars have been waged under the precipice of uniting territories, bringing order, divine right, and alike while the true motivations have been wealth, power and glory. The south was no different from the empires of the past in that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
