2. The Case
A 13-months old infant was brought by
his family to the E&A department of
Sulaymaniyah Teaching Hospital,
Sulaymaniyah, Iraq on the 2nd of July
2009 because of shortness of breath
and repetitive cough following
chocking during eating few hours
earlier. The parents thought he had
inhaled a piece of vegetable food.
3. The Case…
On examination, he was dyspnoic with
bouts of cough. CXR was normal. The
clinical presentation was highly
suggestive of foreign body (FB)
inhalation. Rigid bronchoscopy under
GA, however, revealed no FB but some
secretions. Aspiration was done. Post-
bronchoscopy course was smooth.

5. Comment
A normal CXR doesn’t exclude FB
inhalation particularly if the
history is suggestive. Unresolved
cough and history of choking
while eating or crying are highly
suspicious of FB inhalation. In
such a case, a negative
bronchoscopy is much better than
missing a FB.
