This document summarizes a clustering protocol for heterogeneous wireless sensor networks called Distributed Energy Efficient Clustering (DEEC). DEEC elects cluster heads based on a probability related to each node's residual energy compared to average network energy. Nodes have different probabilities of becoming cluster heads based on their initial and residual energy levels. The network model considers two types of nodes: advanced nodes and normal nodes. Several improved protocols are also described that build upon DEEC, including SDEEC, DDEEC, SBDEEC, SEDEEC, EDDEEC and EDEEC. Conference and journal venues as well as authors of the base article from 2016 are provided.
