Formation of ‘The Spice Girls’ 
• Bob Hebert, Chris Herbert and Lindsey 
Casbon, who together formed the family 
management team “Heart Management”, 
noticed a gap in the market. They notice that 
there was a dominance of boy bands in the 
pop music scene from the mid to late nineties. 
• They therefore decided to create a girl group 
who would stand to compete against these 
more popular boy bands.
Formation of ‘The Spice Girls’ 
• Heart Management place an advertisement in 
The Stage Magazine asking for potential girls 
to audition for this girl group. 
The actual

Image of ‘The Spice Girls’ 
• For their first appearance on American TV, the 
clothes were carefully chosen with: 
• Victoria 
• Mel B 
• Emma 
• Geri 
• Mel C
Selling ‘The Spice Girls 
• The Spice Girls were sold as a group of friends, 
who play around and happen to make top-selling 
singles together 
• When in fact, they were carefully chosen 
group of strangers found through several 
auditions. 
• They image went through endless 
merchandising and sponsorship deals, and 
were involved in all manner of advertising.
Selling ‘Spice Girls’ 
• Everything about the group’s image was under 
the control of their record label and 
management including the nicknames given to 
the girls. 
• Geri Haliwell (Ginger Spice) almost didn’t 
make it into the group based on the fact she 
looked older than the other girls.
