Observation Of A Crime Scene Investigation
I chose Option 3. My scene takes place in two spaces, the dining area of a kitchen and the adjoining
backyard wood deck. My crime is a murder suicide – one male, one female. For both spaces I chose
the quadrant method for searching – not a large space – but due to evidence and appearance of
movement, I believe the quadrant search will be easier to catalog and document evidence, conduct
measurements (solid reference points), and capture photographic images. My evidence spans two
locations. The first is the kitchen dining area. There is no sign of a struggle; there is a round table
with four chairs and miscellaneous table items (napkins, flower vase etc.). On the table, there is a
cell phone, two chairs pulled away from the table, one glass with what appears to be wine in it. Next
to the table is a small suit case which appears to be pack with clothes. The wine glass allows for the
collection of DNA evidence in the form of possible saliva transfer and also allows for the collection
of fingerprint and lip print evidence as well as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Access is gained through a sliding glass door from the kitchen dining area outside onto the deck.
The door is open – the door provides a possible location for fingerprint and DNA evidence in the
form of blood spatter or other bodily material. On the deck lie two victims. The male has what
appear to be two gunshot wounds to the chest. He is lying on his back, feet towards the door, and
head towards the yard. The female is lying on her back, head towards the door, feet towards the yard
and a slight angle – this suggests they were facing each other – male went out the door first,
followed by the female. Next to the female's right hand is a revolver, appears to be .38 caliber, and
she has a gunshot wound to the bottom of her jaw (soft tissue area in center of jaw). There does not
appear to be signs of a struggle on the deck area – suggesting there was no other violent exchange

Crime Scene Investigation Of The National Forensics Academy
The National Forensics Academy was full of multiple dimensions of crime scene investigation that I
had not even thought about nor learned about in the past. The world of crime scene investigation is
interesting to me because of all these aspects and because they are ever changing, and new and
better methods are being discovered. Throughout the academy I learned about these aspects in detail
and how there are various methods within each aspect. The aspects that I learned were how to
photograph a crime scene, finger printing, foot impressions, crime scene sketches, blood spatter
analysis, bullet holes, bones, and digging up a grace to recover a body. These aspects work together
to investigate and recreate crime scenes.
A part of crime scene investigation that I had never put much thought into was the photography.
Taking photos of everything at a scene and the methods of how to photograph scenes are important
in working a scene. I had never had the opportunity to work with the type of cameras that we used at
the academy and I was unaware of the work that goes into photographing a picture. Before taking a
photo one must adjust the settings including the F–stop, ISO, and shutter speed of the camera. In
order to take a picture of a moving object you must adjust the shutter speed so it can capture the
image clear in its state of movement. Also leaving the shutter speed open for a long time can capture
very clear photos of a still object if the camera is placed on a tripod. The

11/12/2014 Crime Scene Investigator Have you ever wonder why people choose to work as a crime
scene investigator? I do not know why people chose to work in this field but I know why I choose
this career. I choose crime scene investigation as my career because when I was a little girl my
dream was to figure out why and how people died. I enjoy watching crime scene investigation
shows on television, elusively the ones involving elderlies and children. One of my favorite crime
scene investigation shows is called 48 hours on A&E. This show inspires me to have the

In addition to the standby duty, you are expected to respond to all emergency calls. The crime scene
investigators (CSI) are in charge of securing and examining details left at the scene of a crime. They
are also responsible for meticulously sorting through evidence and details to assist prosecutors in
building a valid case. I have done some research and I have to admit that there is a lot of interesting
information. What I found interesting after my research is that a CSI must complete a minimum of
720 hours of training in crime scene processing, with a minimum of 80 hours of training in latent
fingerprint processing, 40 hours in major death investigation, 40 hours in advanced death
investigations, 40 hours in photography, 40 hours in blood spatter interpretation, and other training
courses in arson investigation and forensic pathology. Nevertheless, the crime scene investigator
must be certified by the International Association for Identification, Crime Scene Certification
Board, within 18 months as a crime scene investigator." (N.A., Crime Scene Investigator Job
Details, N.A.) Also as a CSI you must obtain contact with the law enforcement officials at all levels,
state and federal. This is not an easy career and does require some schooling in order to be a
successful crime scene investigator. Well in my opinion all this hard work does pay off at the end.
Why do I think that? Because once you become a crime scene investigator your potential

Police Scene Investigation And Reconstruction
General Identifying Statement
Crime scene investigation and reconstruction are both central aspects in the study of policing. By
definition, a crime scene is a scene or place where an offence has been committed, and the site
where forensic evidence is to be gathered in the pursuit of investigating the offence (Fisher, 2012,
p.10). Fisher goes on to clarify that a crime scene may refer to a physical place that may provide
potential evidence to an investigator. This is not limited to a location but rather may include a
include a person's body, any type of building, vehicles, places in the open air or objects found at
those locations. Fisher elaborates; explaining how hoth forensic and scientific techniques are used in
order to preserve and obtain evidence of crime at the crime scene. (Fisher, 2012, p. 13).
Lee and Palmbach (2001) point out that the processes involved in examining a crime scene does not
need to be sophisticated or elaborate; instead, investigators need to concern themselves with
adhering to the fundamental principles and procedures within crime scene investigation. It is
important to remember that there is not a comprehensive plan or sole guiding principle when it
comes to processing crime scenes (Pepper, 2010, p. 101). This being the case, exploring different
protocols and methods that assist in forming a logical plan towards crime scene investigation is
crucial in policing. Understanding how different methods, protocol, and elements relate and connect

must take the measurements of the area roped off, and if there is evidence on the ground or
anywhere, that specialist must make a two–point measurement, which means, take two unmovable
objects of that area like a door or an outlet and measure how far they are to the evidence. The
sketcher must also draw everything else in the crime scene in order for the computer in the forensics
lab to get the most accurate measurement. If there is a crime in a small town that doesn't have a
crime scene unit then a detective will have to carry out all these tasks while also interviewing
witnesses and tracking down suspects to solve the crime. For detectives to get DNA from a person
the detective must get a warrant unless they perform this technique. When detectives are
interviewing a suspect but know they don't have enough evidence to get a warrant for DNA sample
the detective can gather evidence from objects the suspect may have come into contact with in the
interview room. When the detective interviews a suspect they will give the suspect a glass of water
hoping that the suspect will drink out of it and the detective can then send that glass to the forensics
and get the DNA tested that is on the glass and see if it is a match to the crime. Other methods
detectives will use is asking the suspect to lick an envelope closed or offer the suspect a cigarette
and get the DNA of the cigarette butt. This method of obtaining DNA will stand in court because
they did not obtain the DNA

The crime scene examination and subsequent search should be done in a careful and methodical
manner. After talking to the officer(s) who were the first ones on the scene and learning from them
of any changes that might have been made to the scene since their arrival, such as turning lights on
or off or opening doors or windows, start the examination by working your way into the body using
great care to avoid disturbing or destroying any evidence as you do. Carefully observe the floor or
ground surrounding the body. Look for items of evidence or of evidential value such as stains,
marks, etc. Remember to look up too, every crime scene is 3 dimensional. Another technique to you

To accurately depict the scene it is possible to use photos in conjunction with the finished diagram.
Something to keep in mind about the sketch is this, you should have enough information in it so you
could give it to another investigator and that person would be able to complete a finished diagram
without the need to revisit the scene. II. Photographs The investigator should have the photographer,
if one is available, or, if not that lucky, then the investigator himself should ensure that; Overall
photos of the scene are taken to show the approach to the area, street signs, street light locations in
relation to the actual scene, street addresses and identifying objects at the scene. Pictures should also
be taken of every room in the house, even if their relationship to the crime scene is not readily
apparent. Photograph the scene in a clockwise pattern before altering the body 's position or any
other evidence within the scene. Photograph the scene from at least 2 opposite corners, but from all
four corners is even better. This way, nothing is missed or hidden from view by intervening objects.
Photograph the body and the immediate vicinity around the body. If you have a camera boom, take
pictures from ceiling height down of the victim and any other evidence. This perspective often
shows things missed when viewed from ground or eye

Las Vegas is a bright, glitzy, pulsating city drenched in neon. In his novel, Charles Bock described
Las Vegas as "The 24–hour bacchanal. The party without limits. The crown jewel of a country that
has institutionalized indulgence."
The city of Las Vegas is the epitome of indulgence, but also excitement, tinsel–thin glamour, and
high–rolling entertainment – a made–to–order playground for the perpetually–youthful risk–takers.
With casinos throbbing with music and the distinctive chinking of slot machine payoffs, this
entertainment oasis in a dessert is a city that promises so much more than it actually delivers. It is a

Since the time that the scientific science dramatization "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" turned into
a tremendous hit and generated its fans, reporters have been worried about what they instituted the
"CSI Effect." The hypothesis behind the effect is that fans of the well–known show disguise
misguided judgments about the law that they bring with them into the court as jurors. In this way,
the trepidation is that the TV show is at last influencing the results of trials – and not in a great
manner. Criminal justice researchers have started to study the inquiry of whether nationals who are
called to serve on juries bring unreasonable desires and convictions to the court as a consequence of
TV projects. The impact that these projects may have on the jurors, their desires, and their choices is
known as the CSI effect. Less frequently, individuals will allude to the "CSI Effect" to allude to the
inverse, nonetheless. Defense attorneys, for instance, now and again contend that attendants
impacted by "CSI" have a tendency to accept that any scientific confirmation gathered will be
implicating. This is likewise hazardous, commentators say, in light of the fact that individuals don't
normally think about the likelihood of error or even fraud [source: Cole. Scientific researchers have
been known to fudge results about request to get a conviction, in the event that they accept that is

Crime Scene Investigation Report
The crime scene is a delicate place that must be respected if a true picture is to be recognized in the
investigative process. Approaching a crime scene requires the forensic specialist, or anyone directly
involved with the incident, a sharp mental attitude and knowledge of the law. The purpose of this
essay is to examine the processes involved with a crime scene investigation. This will include a
discussion about collecting evidence and will use the given scenario to highlight a practical example
of how a crime scene should be approached and managed in order to receive the best and most
honest results that the justice system may allow.
Scenario i .A dead body(male) ii. Two tables in a living room flipped sideways iii. A bottle of
Gordon's London Dry Gin iv. Two cups(Red) v. A desk Table vii. Two chairs one flipped outside
down and the other standing viii. A prescription drug ix. A small plastic bag filled with cocaine x. A
living room(small) xi. A bottle of George Killings Irish Red xii. A coffee flask Xiii. A bullet lying on
the floor of the living room xiv .Blood on the carpet of the living room xv. Bullet holes on the wall

The Influence Of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation
The CSI effect is the phenomenon in which jurors hold unrealistic expectations of forensic evidence
and investigation techniques, and have an increased interest in the discipline of forensic science
because of the influence of CSI–type television shows. This effect includes raising the state's burden
of proof because of jury expectations that forensic evidence should always be discussed at trial, and
the belief that forensic evidence is never wrong. The show CSI: Crime Scene Investigation provides
inaccurate information by closely relating to the reality of the investigation, but accelerating and
exaggerating long processes in the criminal justice system. For example, searching databases for
fingerprints and other DNA evidence can take months, whereas in the show it takes only minutes or
hours. Also, an increase in demand for forensic evidence for a conviction has placed a higher burden
of proof on the prosecutors. Whereas, forensic evidence is not always available or necessary for a ...

They have to make sure that before they entered the crime scene, nothing in the scene should have
been moved. While they are going through a walk–through, they may have to construct theories
about what happened in the crime scene based on visual examination. Investigators have to take
photographs of the scene and will later on be collected. Taking photographs of the scene will help
them solve the crime because there are some points of the investigation that investigators may have
overlooked evidence, and that evidence could be found in the photographs. After taking photographs
of the scene, they will start to collect clue and evidence that may lead them to their possible
suspect(s). What they may find in the crime scene are fingerprints which can be done using colored
powder and a brush, other thizngs such as blood, firearms, hair, glass and many more things that can
be found in the crime scenes. After doing their job in he crime scene, the evidence they took will be
taken to the forensic scientist. Crime scene investigators will look at the photographs and connect
their theories based on the crime that occurred. The forensic scientists will also examine the victim's
clothes, while the medical examiner will analyze the victim's body for more clues and evidence that
they may find and they will all be doing this in the crime lab. The things they may find could be

Crime Scene Investigation Process
Crime Scene Investigation Process
What do you know about crime scene investigations other than what you see on TV? Crime scenes
vary with the amount of physical evidence which is ordinarily expected to be recovered. The only
thing consistent about crimes scenes is their inconsistency. A crime scene investigation can
described as the application of what has become known as "Locard Exchange Principle". The
"Locard Exchange Principle" is mainly a theory that was established by "Dr. Edmond Locard".
Crime scene investigator document crime scenes in detail and collect physical evidence. Crime
scene investigators include recorder to record the data, sketch artists to sketch the scene,
photographers to take photos of the crime scene and evidence collectors.
The proper steps of crime scene investigation are: Secure the crime scene, thoroughly examine the
crime scene, photograph the crime scene, bag and tag evidence, construct a detailed search of the
crime scene, analyze and collect data, discharge the crime scene, videotaping, sketching. And in the
process of investigating a crime there are two types of crime scenes you have primary, secondary.
A primary crime scene is where the crime actually occurred. A secondary crime scene is basically a
subsequent crime. What is "The Locard Exchange Principle"? "The Locard Exchange Principle is a
theory that states once you come into communication with another person, place or thing you are
exchanging physical material. Dr. Edmond says

The Crime Scene Investigation Training
The Crime Scene Investigation Training Report includes a brief outline of two training modules:
Hair and Crime Scene Training–Blood & Crime Scene Training. These modules provide Crime
Scene Investigation trainees with the adequate information they need to prepare them to know what
to look for when looking for blood and hair samples at a crime scene. This also instructs the trainee
the significance of how to avoid tampering with evidence and how to properly collect a sample. The
men and women trainees have classroom tutorials on the subject as well as a hands–on interactive
tour of a real life crime scene and how to collect samples. These modules are helpful to the trainees,
because they provide the knowledge to identify and collect evidence at a real life crime scene,
supervised by experienced investigators Detective Gates and Morgan. The videos and real life case
trainings are necessary for the trainees to properly know how to handle evidence and their
surroundings during an investigation. Trainees need classroom as well as hands–on training, when
learning how to handle items on investigations. There are several important techniques in how to
properly and correctly handle evidence on an investigation. I will discuss the method, training
techniques and reason for the CSI training.

finding the missing pieces that will solved the case in hand or the mystery. The purpose of crime

This is done by law enforcement. They do this very carefully by documenting the evidence they got

the majority of cases, the law enforcement officer who protects and searches a crime scene plays a

environment has caught the imagination of writers, viewers, and scientists alike. The information we
can glean from blood includes position of victim or perpetrator within a scene to information about
the blood "donor" him or herself. There are many different methods investigators use to analyze this
evidence, but the all have one thing in common: the all involve blood.

The Importance Of The CSI Effect On Crime Scene Investigation
Introduction Television has been around for years making money off of the public's interests.
Starring shows such as CSI Miami, Forensic Files, Cold Case, Bones, and many more demonstrate
the procedures of forensic science at active crime scenes. However, these shows have given the
wrong perception of forensic science and the procedures to investigating an active crime scene.
These television shows have made a lasting impact on the public's perception of Crime Scene
Investigation still today. Often times these shows have made it difficult for judges, attorneys,
lawyers, and juries to understand forensic science. CSI Effect Crime Scene Investigations are
fascinating to the public and have been portrayed on television for many years. These television
shows have influenced how the public perceives the procedures of investigating crime scenes.
Forensic science and investigating a crime scene is a very complex and unique career. Television
has exaggerated and wrongly influenced the perception of forensic science, crime scene
investigation, and procedures in criminalistics. The effect that these crime scene television shows
have on the public is called the CSI Effect (Shelton, 2008). The CSI effect can lead to jurors
wrongly acquitting an individual because they believe the job wasn't thorough enough. There are
more than 100 million viewers who watch television shows about scientific evidence in criminal
cases (Shelton, 2008). The general public assumes what they

I am sure I am not the only one that thinks of the hit television show CSI when I hear of criminal

not particularly pretty people with pencil skirts, expensive suits, and a full hair and makeup team;
they are law enforcers that specialize in the science aspect of solving crimes.
In 2009, Hekim stated that: Investigative police work is mostly about the "recovery, analysis and

1). Americans obtained their first investigators in 1789 and they were known as revenue agents

until the 1950s that a college education was preferred in the investigations department (O'Connor,
2006, para. 3). The first major private detective agency of the nineteenth–century was formed by
Allan Pinkerton in 1819–1884 (Swanson et al., 2002, para 1). In my opinion, the biggest milestone
for investigative work was the discovery of DNA. It has made the task of apprehending criminals
exponentially easier and is virtually error–free.
How to become a Criminal Investigator There are different ways to become a criminal investigator:
you can go to school and major in criminology or criminal science and get hired as a criminal
investigator–perhaps in a small town where prior experience is not required–or you can take the
most common avenue and become a police officer first. After becoming a sworn police officer, you
can receive on–the–job training and attend specialized classes to become an investigator. Speaking
with a current Myrtle Beach Police Crime Scene Investigator, David Bailey, I learned that if you
want to go into investigations you don't necessarily need a certain under–graduate major; you just

DNA In Crime Scene Investigation
Nowadays, DNA is a crucial component of a crime scene investigation, used to both to identify
perpetrators from crime scenes and to determine a suspect's guilt or innocence (Butler, 2005). The
method of constructing a distinctive "fingerprint" from an individual's DNA was first described by
Alec Jeffreys in 1985. He discovered regions of repetitions of nucleotides inherent in DNA strands
that differed from person to person (now known as variable number of tandem repeats, or VNTRs),
and developed a technique to adjust the length variation into a definitive identity marker (Butler,
2005). Since then, DNA fingerprinting has been refined to be an indispensible source of evidence,
expanded into multiple methods befitting different types of DNA ... Show more content on

Each person inherits two copies of these markers from his or her mother and father, so a higher
similarity denotes a closer biological relationship. The probability of two samples matching is
around one in a billion (dna.gov). DNA profiles are compiled by using gel or capillary
electrophoresis to separate samples into a pattern distinctive of the subject's DNA based on ionic
charge, size, or mobility. Usually, samples in the database are searched at moderate stringency,
which requires that all alleles between the two samples match, but the number of alleles can vary,
accounting for DNA contamination or degradation. Partial, or candidate, matches are samples that
have a similar number of alleles in the forensic profile but are not exact, and are used in familial
DNA searching to find close biological relatives of the original forensic profile. Other evidence is
used to determine relatives, including Y chromosome analysis, which traces family relationships
based on the fact that the Y chromosome is transmitted directly between a father and his sons; age;
and geographic location. The process is based on the principle that first–order relatives have closer
DNA profiles than unrelated individuals, and also on the sociological assumption that criminal
tendencies appear in families; according to "the Bureau of Justice Statistics Correctional

The CSI Effect
The CSI Effect began to fully take effect as the popularity for crime scene investigation televisions

weekly ratings taken by Nielsan determined that "five of the top 10 television programs [during one

There is also the impact on the general public as a whole. For instance, those watch police
investigation dramas on television is generally their only source of knowledge on how the process
works. "Individuals take information they already have, simplify the complexity of an issue, and
derive a steadfast conclusion" (Stevens, 2010 pp. 6–7). What this means is that common people look
at a problem and make an instant resolution or in other words, make a prediction without knowing
all the evidence or going through the deductive process. Individuals see the repetition in the dramas
leading them to assume what is going to happen. The thoughts of these individuals are the ultimate
building blocks to the CSI Effect. What is has ultimately come down to is that "the public has views
shows that have hypothetically solved real–life cases before the actual cases have gotten to trial, so
some jurors believe they have gained 'insight' from the media's amateur sleuthing" (Ramsland, 2006,

Crime Scene Investigation: Roles and Practices

Weber State University Introduction
Background Information: Forensic science once thought a Pseudo–Science is now a staple in the
arsenal of weapons that police forces utilize daily. Recently Williams and Weetman refer to forensic
science as something that is recurring throughout an investigation. It is utilized at the scene of the
crime, in the laboratory, in the briefing room, in interviews and in the courtroom (2013, p. 381).
Throughout their research Williams and Weetman take note of the ever changing combinations of
institutional structures, dynamic processes and agents in the routine usage of forensic science in
policing. In order to make use of this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The small amount of research that attempts to assess the benefits of forensic science is said to fall
short of its intended goal. Williams and Weetman (2013) propose numerous reasons for forensics
falling short. Some are the reduction of extant studies which view police and forensic process as
linear rather than separate entities; said studies also have failed to provide a sense of how forensic
science is enacted in the course of an investigation. (Williams and Weetman 2013). The existing
research fails to acknowledge the expertise and skill of those who perform forensic tasks throughout
the course of an investigation. The current study seeks to clarify the role of CSI practices by looking
further into trace and contamination avoidance. Along with trace and contamination avoidance, CSI
work in general is studied in an effort to further the understanding of how it works between the field
and in the courtroom.

This is only possible, however, if the local insect fauna is known, thereby facilitating the need for
local insect population surveys at both the morphological and gene levels. Although flies (order
Diptera) are one of the first and most prevalent necrophagic insect species found associated with a
corpse, beetles (order Coleoptera) are also a forensically relevant insect that can play a significant
role in crime scene investigations.
In this study, the objective was to survey the Coleoptera population in Lyon County, Kansas during
the early spring. Insects were collected using light traps during the evening hours and DNA was
isolated from each collected specimen followed by amplification of the cytochrome oxidase I (COI)
gene. The cytochrome oxidase I (COI) gene is known to be as a standard barcode gene. (CBOL,
2010) This barcode gene is a 648 base pair mostly found in all animals including flies, ... Show

Processing A Crime Scene Investigation Process
A crime area is a place where an identified crime has occured, and it is of importance since it
contains pieces that are vital in determining who committed a crime. Besides, having the details of
the one that perpetrated a particular crime, it also regards other details like when it took place and
the motive behind the offense (Hicks & Sales, 2006). Crime scene processing must get done in a
planned, orderly manner that meets the expected guidelines. It is contained within a conventional
standardized system which is maintained by the crime scene technicians, forensic scientists, and
investigators who rely upon it. Processing a crime scene consists of creating the parameters of the

. Listed were searches on how to make homemade chloroform, how to do a "fool proof"
strangulation, and how to get rid of a body. (Casey Anthony Case, 2013) It is not clear who actually
made these searches. Cindy admits she was trying to look up chlorophyll and ended up searching for
chloroform by mistake. All in all, this seemed unlikely to investigators but they did not have the
definitive proof needed to charge anyone. At this time they still only had Casey as a person of
interest. The entire family refused to take a polygraph test. It was nearly six months after Caylee
went missing before any new evidence was found. On December 11, 2008, meter reader Roy Kronk

The clothing was similar to clothing from Caylee in size and description. Most notable was the baby
blanket. She could faintly make out the character Winnie the Pooh. Photographs of Caylee's room
and pictures of Caylee as an infant show here laying on the same patterned blanket. Wrapped tightly
around the skull were three layers of duct tape. Dr. Garavaglia was able to note that this was done
prior to any decomposition of the body. This was because the mandible remained attached to the
skull after decomposition had occurred completely. (Casey Anthony Trial, 2011) Usually, once the
soft tissue breaks away, there is nothing holding the lower jaw to the upper skull portion. The tape
had held the mandible in place and all of the baby teeth were still in place. This is fairly unusual
because baby teeth are temporary and do not have true roots holding them in once the tissue is gone.
(Casey Anthony Case, 2013) The tape had been wound through the child's hair and was still clinging
into the tape. Over the mouth area, there was a heart shaped sticker. Investigators found similar
stickers in Casey's room. This pointed even more to the remains belonging to Caylee Anthony.
Finally a definitive answer came in. The DNA results finally came back. The findings were that the
remains did in fact belong to Caylee. Now it was Dr. Garavaglia's job to figure out how this young
girl lost her life.

Crime Scene Investigation Essay
Have you ever seen on a television show or on the news where a suspect was arrested or fined when
in the end it was not even that person who committed the crime or accident? Many incidents have
resulted in this due to false information given from eyewitnesses that experienced the scene. This is
why forensic and crime scene investigations are an important aspect because it aids in minimizing
the potential suspects that have been presented already. Scientific data gathered from an
investigation is not necessarily more important, but it has a higher percentage of accuracy and
reliability than eyewitness accounts.
The emotions and memory of the mind can mess with the results that are taken from the eyewitness
accounts. According to Barbara Tversky, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
According to New York Times, "about 75 percent of DNA–based exonerations have come in cases
where witnesses got it wrong." DNA testing in labs and on the crime scene are exact and not made
up. While some researchers may say that eyewitness accounts are valuable evidence, they are not as
reliable as scientific studies done by professionals. Farahan Sarwar from Science Daily says,
"Criminals are getting increasingly canny. They rarely leave any clues. Therefore, eyewitness
accounts are still the most important thing the police have to go on." However, the police must be
aware of how much importance they attribute to the eyewitness accounts for the concern of false
material for the case. Thus, forensic science can still be used for about every situation in a crime
scene investigation. For example, autopsy, fingerprint identification, DNA testing, weapon testing,
and computer database. According to Reference, there are machines that are able to tell what
weapon was used based on ammunition, how the shot was taken, and how much of an impact was
put on the person. This is helpful when an eyewitness was not able to spot the gun type. In the end,
eyewitness accounts are a helpful start for the investigation, but scientific research is a more
effective and dependable way to resolve

Crime Scene Investigation

Abstract
There are vital stages of crime scene investigation that will be portrayed and analyzed through
scholarly sources. A crime scene investigation must start with a crime committed, whether it be a
burglary or a homicide. The first responders (police officers, fire fighters, emergency medical
personnel, etc.) are called to the scene to assess the situation before the crime scene investigators
and detectives are called to the scene to start the investigation. After the scene is protected and
secured, the investigators and detectives will come ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Protection of the crime scene starts when the first responding officer arrives at the scene. Often
times, the police officer's "swoop and scoop" idea prohibits all of the evidence and identification to
be discovered. "Swoop and scoop" is the process that many police officers take at crime scenes; they
will approach the scene and very quickly "find evidence" so that they can proceed to the next call.
Police officers, firefighters, and emergency medical workers are the first to arrive on scene to assess
any health concerns and make sure there are no "perpetrators" in the surrounding area. The task of
the emergency responders is to protect the scene before crime scene investigators arrive to scrutinize
the scene further. The emergency responders will explore the physical conditions at the crime scene,
such as hazardous or toxic materials, electrical problems, the weather, the structure of the crime
scene, and any dangerous people or animals in the surrounding area. If there are any dangerous
conditions that exist, they should be reported to the officer in charge so that the conditions can be
addressed and corrected so that the crime scene investigation can take place. Sometimes, but not
often, personal protective equipment will be utilized when working on a scene with hazardous
conditions. Personal protective equipment consists of hazmat suits, gloves, shoe covers,

from his mouth and abusive actions resulting in Rene Madden's death. In an attempt to force his
wife to for them to both go on separate paths, he committed uxoricide, the act of killing one's wife,
which is the motive behind her death. His brutal and unusual behavior and interests found in the
interview justifies the right to accuse him of murder. Based on reading the reports about the suspects
and gathering information at the crime scene, the book left on Rene's desk shares stories about
brutal relationships including bits of bloodshed. The book points fingers at Mr. Madden because he
mentioned in his interview he enjoys reading that particular genre. Suspiciously, he abruptly stopped
in his conversation trying to cover up his dark secrets. Digging deeper, the book's presence proves
that Matthew was present and the last person to see his wife that day based on the timeline. Even as

Investigation For Processing The Potential Crime Scene Essay
Describe your Plan for Processing the Potential Crime/Incident Scene Processing a crime scene is
no easy task. Individuals who are trained to process and analyze these crime scenes cannot just walk
into area of interest and commence handling items and taking items of possible implications of the
situation. This holds true for a digital forensics investigator as well. Digital forensics investigators
are looking for any possible digital evidence within the crime scene, but it's not as simple as just
finding a computer and taking it to the lab. "Digital evidence is information stored or transmitted in
binary form that may be relied on in court. It can be found on a computer hard drive, a mobile
phone, a personal digital assistant (PDA), a CD, and a flash card in a digital camera, among other
places" (Digital Evidence and Forensics, 2016). Identifying, preparing for the search, seizing the
evidence, documentation, and chain of custody are all critical pieces of ensuring digital evidence is
admissible in court.
How will your team identify potential digital evidence? Our team of forensic analyst and
investigators will safeguard and properly meet all criteria when processing the crime scene. When
our investigators enter the crime scene, our personnel will adopt the mentality of all materials within

Luminol And Crime Scene Investigation
Blood is one of the most important evidence that can be found at the crime scene since violence
always happens in the criminal event. The search of blood is mostly done by close observation of
investigators, however, sometimes blood in the crime scene will be wiped out by the murderer, or,
sometimes the amount of blood will be too little to be observed without the assistance of other
substance. For this kind of situation, luminol can be used in order to help criminalists to detect
blood in the crime scene.
Luminol (5–Amino–2,3–dihydro–1,4–phthalazinedione) is a compound that made up with carbon,
hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen, the chemical formula of luminol is C8H7O3N3, it is in a form of
powder at room temperature and room pressure. The chemical reaction of luminol and the reactant
is a chemiluminescence reaction, which emits strong blue light during the reaction. Luminol can't be
used alone, in order to use it, criminalists must first activate it first. Luminol needs to mix with a
strong oxidizing agent such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Other than a strong oxidizing solution, a
basic solution is also needed, for the basic solution, alkali like sodium hydroxide can be used.

The Importance Of Crime Scene Investigation And Evidence
Crime Scene Investigation and evidence In a crime investigation, police officers play a key role as
first responders. The action police officers take at the beginning of the crime scene play a vital role
in solving the case. Through and carefulness are the two–main thing in an investigation to ensure
that potential physical evidence is not tainted or destroyed, or potential witnesses are not overlooked
(Reno, 2000). Thorough an investigation a crucial factor influencing the ultimate legal significance
of evidence is that investigators follow with an objective, thorough and thoughtful approach (Lewis,
2015). Physical evidence plays a significant role in the criminal justice system. It is considered as
the key element in determining the guilt or innocence of an individual who is being accused of
committing a crime. The uses of evidence in the court of law is very important, therefore, crime
scene investigators must follow a specific protocol when they are collecting evidences. The goal of
this process is the recognize and preserve physical evidence that will yield reliable information to
aid in the investigation (Lewis, 2015). Crime scene investigation CSI is the abbreviation of crime
scene investigation. CSI can be defined as the examination of a scene of a crime for clues or any
physical evidence that may lead investigators towards identifying a criminal suspect. At every crime
scene, there is a story to tell. A crime scene is like a piece of history. Evidence found a

I have always loved suspenseful whodunit television shows, movies, and books that use forensic
science to crack the cases. My favorite television show is The First 48, my favorite movie is The
Silence of the Lambs, and my favorite book is The Body Farm. Therefore, I was excited to have the
opportunity to take this course and learn even more about the subject of forensics. This essay gives a
summary of N. E. Genge's book, The Forensic Casebook: The Science of Crime Scene

The stories were not just about cases where all procedures were correctly followed, but also
included stories about rookie mistakes. I really enjoyed the about unique cases–such as the man
killed by the falling icicle (Genge 79). In another story, young woman was found hanged, and police
were charged with the task of determining if she had committed suicide or if she was the victim of a
homicide. After much investigation, the cause of death was listed as an accident. Evidently the
young woman's friend stated that she had helped tie the knot on the rope–never believing that the
young woman would actually kill herself (Genge 92). After the ruling, the police were not entirely
convinced that it was an accidental death even though no sign of struggle was evident; however,
there was insufficient evidence to prove otherwise (Genge 92). The discipline I enjoyed reading the
most about was the use of animal examiners–dogs. The author was very thorough with the subject,
even going so far as to explain why dogs are normally used instead of other animals such as pigs,
cats, and ferrets. According to Genge, dogs enjoy working because of the praise earned, whereas
pigs are easily sidetracked by the smell of food, cats "don't like to work," and the attention span of a
ferret is almost non–existent (Genge 210). Another interesting fact about dogs is that the canine nose
is adept at sniffing out old

Death Investigation : A Guide For The Scene Investigator
Death investigation has been performed for a considerable length of time in all social orders, albeit
not generally by medical experts .The relationship of law and medicine goes back to the Egyptian
society as early as 3000 B.C. The English coroner framework was said in documentations around
the twelfth century B.C. Despite the fact that the essential objective of a death investigation is to
build up the cause and manner of death, the death investigation part expands much more remote.
While without a doubt the dead can 't take advantage, the quality in death investigation is to benefit
the living and future eras. In a culture that values life, clarifying the demise in an open gathering is
essential for many reasons ("Journal of the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law Online").
In June 2011, the United States Department of Justice released a revised and updated edition of the
1999 version of the manual, titled Death Investigation: A Guide for the Scene Investigator. This
manual discusses proper guidelines for conducting death investigations in all stages of the
investigation, what investigative tools and equipment are needed, and step by step instructions from
when arriving at the crime scene to departing. The manual gives a decent synopsis on how
investigations including death ought to be drawn closer, yet does not expand much on potential
issues that would be tended to, why certain methods are so imperative, and is ambiguous in a few
zones ("A Guide to Death Scene

occurred. for example if a bank get robs that is the primary scene and the getaway car and the lair
are the secondary scene. primary crime scenes are usually more helpful. while secondary scenes
sometimes are the only thing that criminologists have to work with. For example this may be where
a serial killer dumps a body. So investigators may not be able to prove where the actual murder
occurred. which means they only find evidence at the secondary scene which could lead to the

There are three kinds of sciences to look at: Pure, Applied, and Junk. Pure science defined as;
systematic observation of natural phenomena solely for the discovery of unknown laws relating to
facts; the study of science alone, not including its relations to other subjects (dicionary.com, 2018).
This science looks at facts that one derives from mathematics and logic; the natural science. The
second is Applied science. Applied science is: the discipline dealing with the art or science of
applying scientific knowledge to practical problems; "he had trouble deciding which branch of
engineering to study" (Farlex, 2018). This science deals with facts from machines, inventions, and
technology. The third is junk science. Junk science is: faulty scientific information or research,
especially when used to advance special interests (dictionary.com, 2018). Once a person decides to
use the sciences to figure out fact or fiction one uses the scientific method to find the facts. The
steps one follows for this process include: Observation, hypothesis, experiment, conclusion. If one
does not find the truth the first time, they go back and repeat these steps. They keep repeating them
until they reach the truth, or all leads are exhausted. Here is a chart to follow when using the
scientific method. (Science Buddies,

The Role of Special units and specialized officers Documenting crime scene
In documentation of the crime scene, the investigators were quite effective in documenting the
crime scene. The proof of this documentation comes in the level of care that the evidence and its
details were kept years after the incident. For example, the bloody T–shirt, which could provide
Pam's DNA along as with the attackers was well kept and labeled that it hardly escaped Carl's team.
Also, the gun, which was the main weapon used in the attack was kept well enough to the extent
that details about the ballistics and GSR reports conducted in determination of whether it was a
murder or suicide were intact seven years later. This level of documentation is very significant ...

First, the interrogators should keep an open mind regarding the case, refraining from making any
judgments that may influence the process of investigation. In this regard, the investigating officers
ought to have questioned Pam's children first regarding the account, and probably administered a
polygraph test on them to determine whether they had been couched to say anything.
Second, for all adults, a polygraph test would have been necessary in determining whether their
statements were true, considering the level of relationship that each of the adults had with Hendrick.
Documentation during the interrogation ought to have been in the form of note–taking, ransacking
the crime scene for any valuable piece of information, photography, video or audio recording and
possibly generation of computer models of the crime scene (Fisher & Fisher, 2012). A look into at
Pam's death case, none of these materials surfaces when Carl takes on the case in 2008.
During interrogation, the investigators are supposed to be alert when listening to testimonies. It is
obvious that details of the testimonies are mismatched and at some point contradictory. The fact that
all the pieces of flaws in the coached testimonies go unnoticed is ridiculous and shows that there

Crimes Scenes And Evidence Gathering Underpin Every Police...
Crimes scenes and evidence gathering underpin every police investigation. From the moment police
arrive to a scene to the moment a verdict is decided upon the offender, the way in which crime
scenes are established and evidence gathered holds significant weight on the outcome. By
discussing
the provided scenario along with the issues surrounding the establishment of crime scenes, the way
in which evidence is gathered, legislative and policy powers and requirements, and the phenomena
of Locard's Principle, we can establish an understanding of best practice which ultimately will
positively impact the final outcome of a verdict.
General identifying statement
Ensuring a crime scene is established in the wake of an incident lays the foundation for an effective
investigation. Horswell, J. (2004) describes a crime scene as simply a place which is connected to a
crime or incident, either primary or secondary in nature. A primary crime scene being that of where
the crime occurred and where the majority of evidence can be found, while secondary being that of
where evidence relating to the crime may exist elsewhere (p. 32). In relation to the provided
scenario, the house in case is the primary crime scene; as this is where the incident has occurred and
where the majority of evidence will be located. A secondary crime scene is not present in the scope
of the provided scenario, hypothetically however, if stolen property of the victim was to be found
down the street, this

Observation Of A Crime Scene Investigation

  • 1. Observation Of A Crime Scene Investigation I chose Option 3. My scene takes place in two spaces, the dining area of a kitchen and the adjoining backyard wood deck. My crime is a murder suicide – one male, one female. For both spaces I chose the quadrant method for searching – not a large space – but due to evidence and appearance of movement, I believe the quadrant search will be easier to catalog and document evidence, conduct measurements (solid reference points), and capture photographic images. My evidence spans two locations. The first is the kitchen dining area. There is no sign of a struggle; there is a round table with four chairs and miscellaneous table items (napkins, flower vase etc.). On the table, there is a cell phone, two chairs pulled away from the table, one glass with what appears to be wine in it. Next to the table is a small suit case which appears to be pack with clothes. The wine glass allows for the collection of DNA evidence in the form of possible saliva transfer and also allows for the collection of fingerprint and lip print evidence as well as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Access is gained through a sliding glass door from the kitchen dining area outside onto the deck. The door is open – the door provides a possible location for fingerprint and DNA evidence in the form of blood spatter or other bodily material. On the deck lie two victims. The male has what appear to be two gunshot wounds to the chest. He is lying on his back, feet towards the door, and head towards the yard. The female is lying on her back, head towards the door, feet towards the yard and a slight angle – this suggests they were facing each other – male went out the door first, followed by the female. Next to the female's right hand is a revolver, appears to be .38 caliber, and she has a gunshot wound to the bottom of her jaw (soft tissue area in center of jaw). There does not appear to be signs of a struggle on the deck area – suggesting there was no other violent exchange other than the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Crime Scene Investigation Of The National Forensics Academy The National Forensics Academy was full of multiple dimensions of crime scene investigation that I had not even thought about nor learned about in the past. The world of crime scene investigation is interesting to me because of all these aspects and because they are ever changing, and new and better methods are being discovered. Throughout the academy I learned about these aspects in detail and how there are various methods within each aspect. The aspects that I learned were how to photograph a crime scene, finger printing, foot impressions, crime scene sketches, blood spatter analysis, bullet holes, bones, and digging up a grace to recover a body. These aspects work together to investigate and recreate crime scenes. A part of crime scene investigation that I had never put much thought into was the photography. Taking photos of everything at a scene and the methods of how to photograph scenes are important in working a scene. I had never had the opportunity to work with the type of cameras that we used at the academy and I was unaware of the work that goes into photographing a picture. Before taking a photo one must adjust the settings including the F–stop, ISO, and shutter speed of the camera. In order to take a picture of a moving object you must adjust the shutter speed so it can capture the image clear in its state of movement. Also leaving the shutter speed open for a long time can capture very clear photos of a still object if the camera is placed on a tripod. The ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Crime Scene Investigation 11/12/2014 Crime Scene Investigator Have you ever wonder why people choose to work as a crime scene investigator? I do not know why people chose to work in this field but I know why I choose this career. I choose crime scene investigation as my career because when I was a little girl my dream was to figure out why and how people died. I enjoy watching crime scene investigation shows on television, elusively the ones involving elderlies and children. One of my favorite crime scene investigation shows is called 48 hours on A&E. This show inspires me to have the wanting to help those who are in need of help. I am aware that in most cases, I will experience death at a crime scenes but I am prepared for the duties in this job. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In addition to the standby duty, you are expected to respond to all emergency calls. The crime scene investigators (CSI) are in charge of securing and examining details left at the scene of a crime. They are also responsible for meticulously sorting through evidence and details to assist prosecutors in building a valid case. I have done some research and I have to admit that there is a lot of interesting information. What I found interesting after my research is that a CSI must complete a minimum of 720 hours of training in crime scene processing, with a minimum of 80 hours of training in latent fingerprint processing, 40 hours in major death investigation, 40 hours in advanced death investigations, 40 hours in photography, 40 hours in blood spatter interpretation, and other training courses in arson investigation and forensic pathology. Nevertheless, the crime scene investigator must be certified by the International Association for Identification, Crime Scene Certification Board, within 18 months as a crime scene investigator." (N.A., Crime Scene Investigator Job Details, N.A.) Also as a CSI you must obtain contact with the law enforcement officials at all levels, state and federal. This is not an easy career and does require some schooling in order to be a successful crime scene investigator. Well in my opinion all this hard work does pay off at the end. Why do I think that? Because once you become a crime scene investigator your potential ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Police Scene Investigation And Reconstruction General Identifying Statement Crime scene investigation and reconstruction are both central aspects in the study of policing. By definition, a crime scene is a scene or place where an offence has been committed, and the site where forensic evidence is to be gathered in the pursuit of investigating the offence (Fisher, 2012, p.10). Fisher goes on to clarify that a crime scene may refer to a physical place that may provide potential evidence to an investigator. This is not limited to a location but rather may include a include a person's body, any type of building, vehicles, places in the open air or objects found at those locations. Fisher elaborates; explaining how hoth forensic and scientific techniques are used in order to preserve and obtain evidence of crime at the crime scene. (Fisher, 2012, p. 13). Lee and Palmbach (2001) point out that the processes involved in examining a crime scene does not need to be sophisticated or elaborate; instead, investigators need to concern themselves with adhering to the fundamental principles and procedures within crime scene investigation. It is important to remember that there is not a comprehensive plan or sole guiding principle when it comes to processing crime scenes (Pepper, 2010, p. 101). This being the case, exploring different protocols and methods that assist in forming a logical plan towards crime scene investigation is crucial in policing. Understanding how different methods, protocol, and elements relate and connect to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Investigation Of A Crime Scene must take the measurements of the area roped off, and if there is evidence on the ground or anywhere, that specialist must make a two–point measurement, which means, take two unmovable objects of that area like a door or an outlet and measure how far they are to the evidence. The sketcher must also draw everything else in the crime scene in order for the computer in the forensics lab to get the most accurate measurement. If there is a crime in a small town that doesn't have a crime scene unit then a detective will have to carry out all these tasks while also interviewing witnesses and tracking down suspects to solve the crime. For detectives to get DNA from a person the detective must get a warrant unless they perform this technique. When detectives are interviewing a suspect but know they don't have enough evidence to get a warrant for DNA sample the detective can gather evidence from objects the suspect may have come into contact with in the interview room. When the detective interviews a suspect they will give the suspect a glass of water hoping that the suspect will drink out of it and the detective can then send that glass to the forensics and get the DNA tested that is on the glass and see if it is a match to the crime. Other methods detectives will use is asking the suspect to lick an envelope closed or offer the suspect a cigarette and get the DNA of the cigarette butt. This method of obtaining DNA will stand in court because they did not obtain the DNA ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

After talking to the officer(s) who were the first ones on the scene and learning from them of any changes that might have been made to the scene since their arrival, such as turning lights on or off or opening doors or windows, start the examination by working your way into the body using great care to avoid disturbing or destroying any evidence as you do. To accurately depict the scene it is possible to use photos in conjunction with the finished diagram. Something to keep in mind about the sketch is this, you should have enough information in it so you could give it to another investigator and that person would be able to complete a finished diagram without the need to revisit the scene. II. Photographs The investigator should have the photographer, if one is available, or, if not that lucky, then the investigator himself should ensure that; Overall photos of the scene are taken to show the approach to the area, street signs, street light locations in relation to the actual scene, street addresses and identifying objects at the scene. Pictures should also be taken of every room in the house, even if their relationship to the crime scene is not readily apparent. Photograph the scene in a clockwise pattern before altering the body 's position or any other evidence within the scene. Photograph the scene from at least 2 opposite corners, but from all four corners is even better. This way, nothing is missed or hidden from view by intervening objects. The party without limits. The crown jewel of a country that has institutionalized indulgence." The city of Las Vegas is the epitome of indulgence, but also excitement, tinsel–thin glamour, and high–rolling entertainment – a made–to–order playground for the perpetually–youthful risk–takers. With casinos throbbing with music and the distinctive chinking of slot machine payoffs, this entertainment oasis in a dessert is a city that promises so much more than it actually delivers. But she said that she needn't wait for such an analysis to conclude that "...in at least some of the cases reviewed, lab examiners and attorneys either overstated the strength of the forensic evidence or failed to properly qualify the limitations of the forensic analysis." • 8. Crime Scene Investigation Since the time that the scientific science dramatization "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" turned into a tremendous hit and generated its fans, reporters have been worried about what they instituted the "CSI Effect." The hypothesis behind the effect is that fans of the well–known show disguise misguided judgments about the law that they bring with them into the court as jurors. In this way, the trepidation is that the TV show is at last influencing the results of trials – and not in a great manner. Criminal justice researchers have started to study the inquiry of whether nationals who are called to serve on juries bring unreasonable desires and convictions to the court as a consequence of TV projects. The impact that these projects may have on the jurors, their desires, and their choices is known as the CSI effect. Less frequently, individuals will allude to the "CSI Effect" to allude to the inverse, nonetheless. Defense attorneys, for instance, now and again contend that attendants impacted by "CSI" have a tendency to accept that any scientific confirmation gathered will be implicating. This is likewise hazardous, commentators say, in light of the fact that individuals don't normally think about the likelihood of error or even fraud [source: Cole. The purpose of this essay is to examine the processes involved with a crime scene investigation. • 10. The Influence Of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation The CSI effect is the phenomenon in which jurors hold unrealistic expectations of forensic evidence and investigation techniques, and have an increased interest in the discipline of forensic science because of the influence of CSI–type television shows. This effect includes raising the state's burden of proof because of jury expectations that forensic evidence should always be discussed at trial, and the belief that forensic evidence is never wrong. The show CSI: Crime Scene Investigation provides inaccurate information by closely relating to the reality of the investigation, but accelerating and exaggerating long processes in the criminal justice system. For example, searching databases for fingerprints and other DNA evidence can take months, whereas in the show it takes only minutes or hours. Also, an increase in demand for forensic evidence for a conviction has placed a higher burden of proof on the prosecutors. Whereas, forensic evidence is not always available or necessary for a ... Taking photographs of the scene will help them solve the crime because there are some points of the investigation that investigators may have overlooked evidence, and that evidence could be found in the photographs. After taking photographs of the scene, they will start to collect clue and evidence that may lead them to their possible suspect(s). What they may find in the crime scene are fingerprints which can be done using colored powder and a brush, other thizngs such as blood, firearms, hair, glass and many more things that can be found in the crime scenes. After doing their job in he crime scene, the evidence they took will be taken to the forensic scientist. • 12. Crime Scene Investigation Process Crime Scene Investigation Process What do you know about crime scene investigations other than what you see on TV? Crime scenes vary with the amount of physical evidence which is ordinarily expected to be recovered. The only thing consistent about crimes scenes is their inconsistency. A crime scene investigation can described as the application of what has become known as "Locard Exchange Principle". The "Locard Exchange Principle" is mainly a theory that was established by "Dr. Edmond Locard". Crime scene investigator document crime scenes in detail and collect physical evidence. Crime scene investigators include recorder to record the data, sketch artists to sketch the scene, photographers to take photos of the crime scene and evidence collectors. The proper steps of crime scene investigation are: Secure the crime scene, thoroughly examine the crime scene, photograph the crime scene, bag and tag evidence, construct a detailed search of the crime scene, analyze and collect data, discharge the crime scene, videotaping, sketching. And in the process of investigating a crime there are two types of crime scenes you have primary, secondary. A primary crime scene is where the crime actually occurred. A secondary crime scene is basically a subsequent crime. What is "The Locard Exchange Principle"? "The Locard Exchange Principle is a theory that states once you come into communication with another person, place or thing you are exchanging physical material. Dr. Edmond says ... • 13. The Crime Scene Investigation Training The Crime Scene Investigation Training Report includes a brief outline of two training modules: Hair and Crime Scene Training–Blood & Crime Scene Training. These modules provide Crime Scene Investigation trainees with the adequate information they need to prepare them to know what to look for when looking for blood and hair samples at a crime scene. This also instructs the trainee the significance of how to avoid tampering with evidence and how to properly collect a sample. The men and women trainees have classroom tutorials on the subject as well as a hands–on interactive tour of a real life crime scene and how to collect samples. These modules are helpful to the trainees, because they provide the knowledge to identify and collect evidence at a real life crime scene, supervised by experienced investigators Detective Gates and Morgan. The videos and real life case trainings are necessary for the trainees to properly know how to handle evidence and their surroundings during an investigation. Trainees need classroom as well as hands–on training, when learning how to handle items on investigations. There are several important techniques in how to properly and correctly handle evidence on an investigation. I will discuss the method, training techniques and reason for the CSI training. Collecting irrefutable evidence and finding the missing pieces that will solved the case in hand or the mystery. The purpose of crime scene investigation is to help establish what happened, and to identify the person who is responsible. This is done by law enforcement. They do this very carefully by documenting the evidence they got at the crime scene and recognizing all relevant physical evidence. It is no exaggeration to say that in the majority of cases, the law enforcement officer who protects and searches a crime scene plays a critical role in determining whether physical evidence will be used in solving or prosecuting violent crimes. Starring shows such as CSI Miami, Forensic Files, Cold Case, Bones, and many more demonstrate the procedures of forensic science at active crime scenes. However, these shows have given the wrong perception of forensic science and the procedures to investigating an active crime scene. These television shows have made a lasting impact on the public's perception of Crime Scene Investigation still today. Often times these shows have made it difficult for judges, attorneys, lawyers, and juries to understand forensic science. CSI Effect Crime Scene Investigations are fascinating to the public and have been portrayed on television for many years. These television shows have influenced how the public perceives the procedures of investigating crime scenes. Forensic science and investigating a crime scene is a very complex and unique career. Television has exaggerated and wrongly influenced the perception of forensic science, crime scene investigation, and procedures in criminalistics. The effect that these crime scene television shows have on the public is called the CSI Effect (Shelton, 2008). The CSI effect can lead to jurors wrongly acquitting an individual because they believe the job wasn't thorough enough. What people probably don't know is that the people who work as investigators are not particularly pretty people with pencil skirts, expensive suits, and a full hair and makeup team; they are law enforcers that specialize in the science aspect of solving crimes. In 2009, Hekim stated that: Investigative police work is mostly about the "recovery, analysis and interpretation of information about criminal offenses. • 19. DNA In Crime Scene Investigation Nowadays, DNA is a crucial component of a crime scene investigation, used to both to identify perpetrators from crime scenes and to determine a suspect's guilt or innocence (Butler, 2005). The method of constructing a distinctive "fingerprint" from an individual's DNA was first described by Alec Jeffreys in 1985. He discovered regions of repetitions of nucleotides inherent in DNA strands that differed from person to person (now known as variable number of tandem repeats, or VNTRs), and developed a technique to adjust the length variation into a definitive identity marker (Butler, 2005). Since then, DNA fingerprinting has been refined to be an indispensible source of evidence, expanded into multiple methods befitting different types of DNA ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Each person inherits two copies of these markers from his or her mother and father, so a higher similarity denotes a closer biological relationship. The probability of two samples matching is around one in a billion (dna.gov). DNA profiles are compiled by using gel or capillary electrophoresis to separate samples into a pattern distinctive of the subject's DNA based on ionic charge, size, or mobility. Usually, samples in the database are searched at moderate stringency, which requires that all alleles between the two samples match, but the number of alleles can vary, accounting for DNA contamination or degradation. Partial, or candidate, matches are samples that have a similar number of alleles in the forensic profile but are not exact, and are used in familial DNA searching to find close biological relatives of the original forensic profile. Other evidence is used to determine relatives, including Y chromosome analysis, which traces family relationships based on the fact that the Y chromosome is transmitted directly between a father and his sons; age; and geographic location. The process is based on the principle that first–order relatives have closer DNA profiles than unrelated individuals, and also on the sociological assumption that criminal tendencies appear in families; according to "the Bureau of Justice Statistics Correctional Populations ... The search of blood is mostly done by close observation of investigators, however, sometimes blood in the crime scene will be wiped out by the murderer, or, sometimes the amount of blood will be too little to be observed without the assistance of other substance. For this kind of situation, luminol can be used in order to help criminalists to detect blood in the crime scene. The action police officers take at the beginning of the crime scene play a vital role in solving the case. Through and carefulness are the two–main thing in an investigation to ensure that potential physical evidence is not tainted or destroyed, or potential witnesses are not overlooked (Reno, 2000). Thorough an investigation a crucial factor influencing the ultimate legal significance of evidence is that investigators follow with an objective, thorough and thoughtful approach (Lewis, 2015). Physical evidence plays a significant role in the criminal justice system. It is considered as the key element in determining the guilt or innocence of an individual who is being accused of committing a crime. The uses of evidence in the court of law is very important, therefore, crime scene investigators must follow a specific protocol when they are collecting evidences. The goal of this process is the recognize and preserve physical evidence that will yield reliable information to aid in the investigation (Lewis, 2015). After much investigation, the cause of death was listed as an accident. Evidently the young woman's friend stated that she had helped tie the knot on the rope–never believing that the young woman would actually kill herself (Genge 92). After the ruling, the police were not entirely convinced that it was an accidental death even though no sign of struggle was evident; however, there was insufficient evidence to prove otherwise (Genge 92). The discipline I enjoyed reading the most about was the use of animal examiners–dogs. The author was very thorough with the subject, even going so far as to explain why dogs are normally used instead of other animals such as pigs, cats, and ferrets. According to Genge, dogs enjoy working because of the praise earned, whereas pigs are easily sidetracked by the smell of food, cats "don't like to work," and the attention span of a ferret is almost non–existent (Genge 210). The manual gives a decent synopsis on how investigations including death ought to be drawn closer, yet does not expand much on potential issues that would be tended to, why certain methods are so imperative, and is ambiguous in a few zones ("A Guide to Death Scene ... Pure science defined as; systematic observation of natural phenomena solely for the discovery of unknown laws relating to facts; the study of science alone, not including its relations to other subjects (dicionary.com, 2018). Applied science is: the discipline dealing with the art or science of applying scientific knowledge to practical problems; "he had trouble deciding which branch of engineering to study" (Farlex, 2018). In relation to the provided scenario, the house in case is the primary crime scene; as this is where the incident has occurred and where the majority of evidence will be located. A secondary crime scene is not present in the scope of the provided scenario, hypothetically however, if stolen property of the victim was to be found down the street, this
