2.  Achlorhydria or hypochlorhydria is the
condition where the production of gastric acid
is absent or low respectively
 Cells within the stomach produce adequate
HCl acid necessary for normal physiological
functions within the lumen of the stomach
 However, under physiological condition, its
production has a –ve correlation with age after
30yrs

 Barrier health
 Vitamins and mineral absorption
 Enzyme activation
 Bolus motility
 Note: disturbance in this functions will lead to
severe pathological conditions

4.  Taking antacids
 Heartburn
 Acid reflux
 Indigestion
 Offensive breath
 Elevated blood-urea nitrogen(BUN)
 Decrease in phosphate level
 Increase in blood globulins

5.  Loss of appetite for meat
 Difficult bowel movements
 Fullness after meals
 Difficulty digesting fruits or vegetables

6.  It is most often the conclusion of patients who
have heartburn or acid reflux that they have
too much stomach acid, meanwhile, all facts
point to the contrary
 This leaves the patients with the impression
that taking antacids or proton pump inhibitors
and H2 antagonists
 These are drugs that severely diminishes the
body’s ability to make HCl acid

7.  Heartburn or acid reflux or gastro-esophageal
reflux disease(GERD) is actually caused by low
levels of stomach acid
 low pH levels (from between 2.5-3.0) of the
stomach is the trigger for closure of the Lower
esophageal sphincter(LES). Although, other
causes maybe obesity, bacterial over-growth,
diaphragmatic dysfunction, pregnancy

 Lack of absorption (iron,B12)

10.  Though taking antacids and other acid
producing antagonists may relief momentary
pain and discomfort, it actually compounds to
the problem causing further damages

11.  It is of my opinion that doctors and
pharmaceutical industries should put the
interest of the patient before profit
 This level of honesty is key to the development
of patient-doctor trust
