2. The most common respondents were female’s between the ages of
17-27. The majority of the people we asked preferred to see a
horror film and a romantic comedy.
To compromise this we have chosen to create an opening
sequence for the Romantic Thriller genre.
This means we should aim our film towards teens and young adults.
Target Audience
3. Our chosen genre for our film opening sequence is a Romantic Thriller.
Typically a thriller film will aim to create suspense and tension throughout
the film to make it exciting for the audience. It is full of twists and usually
has a psychological element to make the audience think. It is typically set
in urban areas, specifically streets and households. Violence is a key
feature of a thriller film.
A typical romance film will show a romantic relationship develop throughout
the film and have some complications that will be solved by the end.
Romantic films usually have a narrative in the opening sequence to
introduce the character and are often set in large cities, such as New York
or London.
To co-operate these two genres into an opening sequence we will try and
include conventions from both genres to make it successful.
Genre and signifiers of the opening
sequence
4. In a romantic thriller, the audience are expecting to see an equal amount of romance and
action.
The respondents of our survey mostly related to ‘not having plans on a Saturday night’ so
we could incorporate this into our opening sequence to make it seem more relatable.
From our results we could see that our audience did not mind whether the main character
was male or female with 54% choosing the option ‘either’. When asked if they wanted the
character to be stereotypical or counter-typical 46% said they did not mind either. This
means we have more choice when planning our final project.
The music we will likely use is ‘mystery-esque’ as we could like to make a romantic thriller
but also the majority of people had chosen this option.
Our audience also chose their preferred location to be ‘London’ with 46% of the vote.
From this information gathered, the audience should expect to see an romantic thriller
opening sequence a main character being introduced with mystery-esque music playing in
a London area, and should be filled with suspense.

Our opening sequence will start with dramatic, mystery-esque music as an
establishing shot is shown of a house. The setting is a suburban street in the
middle of a winter day. The camera wil movel forwards and enter the door that is
ajar.
●
In the house we see destruction to show a crime has taken place, with blood on the
floor and on the walls. This adds mystery and creates tension for the audience. As
the camera moves through the house it focuses on a picture of a soldier and then
moves towards a letter, showing that the soldier had died in action in a war.
●
Our main character is revealed, sitting on the floor, head down, curled up. She is
barefoot and looks like she is traumatised. The camera moves again and we see a
hand of a young child, covered in blood. Her, mystery is created.
