Andrew cannon opening sequence analysis
1. Opening sequence analysis
I will analyzing the opening
sequence's for , saw 3d , silence of
the lambs, black swan.
2. Black Swan
At this point in the opening sequence gentle ,slow paced music is playing, which is affective on the audience as it
leads them into a false sense of security, the use of a dark crayon/pastel on light paper suggest that there will be
danger within a peaceful environment.
3. Black Swan
At this point in the opening sequence the pace of the music has picked up upping the suspense and the
tension for the first scene, also the shading that has been taking place has gotten thicker suggesting
aggression, which also sets the tone and atmosphere for the audience watching it.
4. Saw 3d
• Straight away this opening sequence uses face passed music and diegetic sound of screaming and electric
shocks this suggest violence and torture, by doing this it get the audience wondering what the link is as this
footage and sound is from the ending the first film, which already grabs their attention and makes them want
to continue watching on.
5. Saw 3d
• The sequence then shifts to a slow tracking shot of this bloody floor where a bloody blue shirt is scrounged up, this music at this point has
slowed down but retains its eerie feel and tone, the use of this calms the audience down, almost as it is trying to lead theminto a false sense
of security, the blood stains suggests a continuation from the begging that more violence is in store as the red could be symbolic for danger.
6. Saw 3d
• This next image is of a man who is crawling on the floor this immediately has the audience questioning as
to what's happened or is going to happen, the non diegetic sound (the music) sped up in tempo and grew
in volume thus leading the audience to expect a huge twist or a big revel within scene.
7. Silence of the lambs
• Firstly we are introduced to a women running in a forest, we as an audience are clueless as to why she running through this
forest however she doesn’t appear stressed or panicked, suggest that she is either looking for trouble or in a calm isolated
situation.
8. Silence of the lambs
• Later on we are now given an indication as to why the girl is running and the situation she is in, non-diegetic
sound has also been introduced and has a peaceful feel to it however this could be to lead the audience into a
false sense of security.
9. Silence of the lambs
• By this point we have been given enough information to realise that this character is working for the
police and is either in trouble or being assigned a case etc. this increases the tension a interests the
audience making them want to carry on with the film.
