2. Taylor Swift falls under the category of pop music. Often
conventions of pop music are bright colours, aimed at
teens and are often quite stylish.
The album cover itself, is a polaroid.
Polaroids were a trend in the 70s,80s
and 90s. But now have made a
comeback and are also trending. Pop
music often follows the latest trends,
which Swift could be doing here –
therefore following a typical
convention of a pop artist.
The album cover, has a retro filter. This reflects the albums
name, and creates the ambiance of the old fashioned style of
the album. As well as this, the filter is quite dreamy, creating
this vibe of a dream world. Not a typical convention of pop
music as they are normally bright.
On the other hand, Swift’s album could also be seen as quite
unconventional as the font used both back and front are hand written
which makes the album more personalised to the artist. Usually albums
would be following what’s current, however the use of a handwritten
font makes it more personalised to her, also the name of her album is
‘1989’ which again, creates this idea of it being a personal album to her.

P!nk is a pop/rock artist. So typical conventions you’d expect
to see from this particular genre is bright colours,
mainstream, stylish and often artists like to follow the crowd

because it’s

The font is bold and different to lots
of pop covers in the pop genre.
However the font isn’t a bright
colour, its black. This still brings
attention to the album and it’s a solid
colour. The use of font and colour is
unconventional for a pop album
colour.
The background colour is bright and
colourful – pink and green. Having a
bright colour album brings attention
to it and is also a convention of pop
music.
The outfit on the front, is revealing,
this is an often convention seen with
pop artists. The red heels are also
quite stylish – another convention of
pop music.
P!nk’s hair is quite out there and
eccentric, there isn’t so much of a ‘clean
image’ therefore connoting she’s
different from other artists out there -
this is unconventional
P!nk’s tattoos are also visible on the front, this
could be seen as quite unconventional as this isn’t
often seen on pop albums. This goes against the
convention of a pop artist generally following the
latest trend. And also goes against a ‘clean image’

Hozier is indie music. Typical conventions of indie music, often there
is a lot of ‘mystery’ to the artist and there is often a retro look

colours. The blue and orange
are simplistic and there isn’t a
lot of other colours to the
album. This could be seen as
quite conventional of the artist
as indie music isn’t bright and
colourful like in pop music.
There is a lot of symbolism
within this album. For example,
on the arm there is a tear in his
sleeve, this reveals a wooden
structure. This could symbolise
the structure of him, that there
are complicated layers to the
artist and he is easily broken.
This could give away the
contents of the album and what
is could be about.
The album is quite eccentric
and retro, which is an often
convention of indie music. The
old chair and the clock in the
background.

soft blues. This connotes the image
of a dream world. Another typical
convention.
The butterflies could symbolise
freedom and empowerment.
Which could also appeal to her
female target audience. This could
be seen as a convention as female
empowerment is a very talked
about subject at the moment and
this could be reflecting this.
